I unironically think this is their greatest record. More riffs per square inch than anything else they did, and I think Dime's best solos are on this album. Phil never sounded better. It's just perfect and suffers from people clowning on it because it doesn't match the later Pantera persona. It's a piece of art.
I read somewhere that Jerry (Dime and Vinnie's dad) always said "We'll Meet Again" was 'the hit'. He clearly thought it was his son's best solo, and he always felt that way. I love that.
This was the first Pantera I heard. It's a totally different style than what they are famous for, but it shows the vocal range of Phil and Dimebag still shreds. Love Hard Ride. Very underrated album for it's time.
I think the most underrated piece on this disc is the solo from "We'll meet again". I love it how many bluesy shredding patterns from it Dimebag would later use in The Sleep :P
Dimebag later said it was one of his favorite songs that he played on, and possibly the best solo he's ever done. One of the highlights of the album, for sure.

I live in Houston and one summer night in 1989 my friend and I walked into Backstage off I-59 not knowing what band was playing. We walked in right while Pantera was killing it and we had a brains melted. From that night to about 14 months later we saw them around 15 times between the two night stints they would play there every other month and going to Dallas a couple of times. This is all before Cowboys from Hell was released. What a great time this was. It shaped our lives. Live music and killer guitar playing is what I live for weather it’s metal, jazz, blues, classical whatever. Dime could have been at the top of music genre he had chosen. He went with badass metal and he ruled it. He difined music prodigy. What a senseless loss we all are stuck with. RIP my friend.

Pantera should really recognise and respect this album as the first true Pantera album (Phil Anselmo era). It rocks hard and it's really pretty good straight-up Judas Priest 'Painkiller' style metal. 🤘

I dont think anyone even Phil forgets that about Half of this album eventually turned into CFH. Both of these albums are very similar. The Problem is that stuff that did was Almost all written by Phil, Rex Vinnie and Dime. The stuff here that you never really heard again, Wasnt.

I have to admit, I have never been much of a Pantera fan... but the song DEATH TRAP (and that galloping opening riff from Hades... and that God-blessed SOLO!) just rips all kinds of late 1980s metal conventions to smithereens!!! "Queen of the Reich" meets Godzilla's testicles... on crack! Dime & Vinnie; we'll see you raising Hell in the afterlife, bros... and very, VERY nice remastering, slanderous! ;)
This album needs to be remastered in such a way that Phil’s background vocals can be enhanced and Dimebag’s rhythm guitar parts can be overdrived in production and re-released
Been a Pantera fan since CFH debuted. I hate to admit I did not know they existed as Pantera before CFH. This is classic 80s metal. Huge difference from their signature sound but, still very good. Love it.
No shame in not knowing. The first album PHIL WROTE with them was CFH. Thats y they considered CFH their debut. They actually played a lot of these songs in 1990 but dropped them from the set in 1991.
Phil said hes cool with this being re-released. I think him and Rex and whoever is in charge of Dime and Vinny's estate need to get together and re-release it! The fans demand it.

They really shouldn’t be ashamed of this, the guitars/ bass is on point and Phil is actually pretty good priest/ queensriech sounding singer. Everybody gotta start somewhere, look at Motley Crue, all glammed up from Shout at the Devil back, then they outgrew it but not ashamed of it

DIME was a monster player even as a teenager! He is actually a busier player on this! as a guitar player, some shit on this are really hard as FUCK to attempt, God blessed ability, technical as FUCK, fast,complex,! He was not asked to join MEGADETH because he he didn't have mad skills, he was as good at 20 as anyone, throw in the tone,originality, personality, and he was one of the nicest and humble guy's ever, greatly appreciated and missed ALWAYS!!

So, I didn't listen to this album for like 8 years and wow, I forgot how good this actually is. I find most of their later albums after this to be boring. Power Metal is their best album and it's a damn shame how this album is so forgotten. Too bad we'll probably never get a reissue of this masterpiece.

Very Underrated Record, One of my favorite records of all time, Wasn't recognized much more it deserves to be, with the Help of Phil Anselmo they got more heavier and heavier because of his Heavy Metal Awra, I see this is the real Start where Pantera has Begun their Heavy Metal Sound before jumping into straight Groove Metal Trend. But hey its one of the classics that I've heard so far another masterpiece that I'II remember and some Speed/Heavy Metal/Glam Metal/and Thrash Metal here I guess Rock the World is straight Glam while the rest of the songs were Speed/Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal so great Hard Ride has a great solo as well amazing.
This is my favorite album from them and I think their best personally, I know I’ll get shit from people because their later albums are what they are know for but I prefer their older stuff, I like it better, I think their last five albums are overrated personally but to each their own
I can't believe this is Anselmo singing. I've been a fan since their early days in the eighties. I love what Phil brought to the band, but I would've loved to hear him actually singing like this more. I don't know how, but if he could've found a way to incorporate the two styles it would've been amazing. But at any rate, Pantera was always amazing..early, middle and late.
The song power metal is actually sort of Predicting what this band was about to do. Its one of the best early Pantera songs. That song mostly says exactly what they did for the next decade. They literally ran forever as long as they could.
This album is killer, even though it is a little different metal than "Cowboys from Hell" onward. You can tell they liked Judas Priest a lot. And what true metalhead doesn't?

I bought this album as a curiosity (huge fan of their 90s output). This became my favorite album. So many elements that made them great on one record!

Only "Proud to be loud" is available on spotify only but it was written as Dead Green Mummies, which it was actually sung by Pantera.

Wow, this is noticeably cleaner than other versions. I was always bothered by the loud crackling noises on Over & Out and this fixes that.

I totally agree, can't believe how underrated this album is. It's their best one in my opinion as well.
I can't believe this is Anselmo singing. I've been a fan since their early days in the eighties. I love what Phil brought to the band, but I would've loved to hear him actually singing like this more. I don't know how, but if he could've found a way to incorporate the two styles it would've been amazing. But at any rate, Pantera was always amazing..early, middle and late.

The song power metal is actually sort of Predicting what this band was about to do. Its one of the best early Pantera songs. That song mostly says exactly what they did for the next decade. They literally ran forever as long as they could.

@@Pokemonvspuddin101 Honestly, I love every Pantera album equally beginning from Power Metal and on, but I've alway's loved Cowboys because it was a good combination of Power Metal and what will come after (Vulgar). You get the heaviness of Vulgar but the screams of Power Metal, it works so well. Every Pantera is great tho!!!🤘
