My Daddy is the young firefighter (23yrs old) in this film performing the hose test. I have the news paper clipping that goes with it. Very cool. I found this on UA-cam as I was preparing to write his memorial speech. Thank you for putting this on youtube!♥️
The siren shown at 0:46 is the Fyr-Fyter Penetrator...one of the first electronic sirens in the early 1960s. Mack installed a lot of them. I own several and have one in use.
an aside... St Paul fd. bought 10 type 95,1000gpm pumpers and 1 heavy squad, all 11 mack rigs gave our city 30 yrs of sevice, total purchase price for all 11 rigs: 150.000.00$,15 k each!!!😮
All Mack Trucks, Allentown, Pennsylvania. The bulldog wouldn't have it any other way... The Tower Ladder is one of the first models, on a "C" Chassis. Then came the "CF" chassis. "Mack-Baker Tower Ladder." ...six outriggers, no tipping.
I served from 1970 to 2000. Started as a firefighter retired as division chief. Of all the jobs I had, I enjoyed being a driver/pump operator the most. My department also ran predominately Mack fire apparatus and I drove many of the models shown in the video. The street alarm boxes were mostly a pain in the ass. I recall very few fires that were not called in by telephone, either simultaneously or prior to a the alarm box being pulled. Seems like most of the box alarms were malicious false alarms. Another notable thing about the 1970's is SCBA's were carried on apparatus but not used as often, or as long as they should have been. We ate a lot of smoke unneccessarily. Smoke or not, it was a great career, I would do it all over again.
The connection between inhaling smoke and lung cancer was known prior to the 1950’s. It’s not a new revelation to firefighters. The problem wasn’t not knowing that it caused lung cancer, it was that SCBA for firefighting was still being perfected and many firefighters were very reluctant to use the models available for various reasons. The firefighter of the 40’s,50’s,60’s and into the 70’s were fully aware of the consequences of breathing large quantities of smoke, they just chose to ignore it.
Allentown is the 3rd largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia & Pittsburgh. Mack fire apparatus was manufactured in Allentown & there is a museum at the current Mack plant.
Robert Walton news to me, thank you. I reckon that then since Renault exited the market, Volvo had no incentive to return, with minor exception of chassis for tankers.
Damn someone has sleep apnea 😂 also if one of my brothers or sisters at the station sounded like this they’re sleeping on the gurney downstairs bruh 😂🤦🏽♂️💀
Allentown, Pennsylvania went from a worldwide manufacturing Powerhouse, to a Powerhouse of dark-skinned citizens making baby's they can't afford to raise.

My town had a 1965 Mack it was beautiful
35 years on the job, 25 of them driving a pump, best job on the department!
Thanks for serving.
A lot of hustle back then.
Many times it was on my street.
Now most fire depts chase medical calls all day, not many fires like back in the day!
I remember stopping by the firehouse to see the ticker tape. Long Branch N.J is a big town. That's an impressive firehouse.
Rampart this is Squad 51

In 1979 in Verdun. a suburb of Montréal, we had brand new Mack MB600 pumpers and a CF Baker tower ladder.Best trucks for sure!

Today we realize that smoke can cause lung cancer and COPD,

I'm looking at the footage of the tower ladder training, and I'm just dumbfounded that allentown ever had that much empty space.
THIS VIDEO IS DOPE!!!! I WAS BORN IN 1978 AND STILL REMEMBER SOME OF THESE BLOCKS AS A KID. THAT WAS THE CHEW ST STATION. I LOVE A-TOWN!
Glad you liked it. The 70's and 80's were good times!
I remember the Riddicks. Larry, Charles, Linda, Robbert Lee, Great people, but that was before your time son, 👍🏼❤️

I think this is older than '71.
Wish I lived during this.
Very cool time period :)
Yes!
Poker club caught fire - I bet putting the fire out was such a "big deal" - that kind of joke was "on the cards"
Home of Mack Fire Truck manufacturing.Until Mack was bought by a French Co. who promptly ended the best fire trucks in the world.
I agree with you 100 and 10% my friend!!!
I also agree
French? Mack is Swedish, part of Volvo. Volvo also bought Renault.
@@jaysmith1408 yes in the late 70s early 80s it was bought by Renault and promptly burned the fire truck manufacturing part to the ground...
Robert Walton news to me, thank you. I reckon that then since Renault exited the market, Volvo had no incentive to return, with minor exception of chassis for tankers.
a great video!
They are amazing people.
Damn someone has sleep apnea 😂 also if one of my brothers or sisters at the station sounded like this they’re sleeping on the gurney downstairs bruh 😂🤦🏽♂️💀
Ha.. today with all that loud snoring all these guy's asses would have been pulled out of service for sleep apnea.

Early SCBA users and the slow end of the smoke eaters.

Aren't you late for a Klan rally?
