  • Does the Catholic Church have any actual authority, and where does this authority come from? The Church has existed for over two millennia and encompasses over a billion members worldwide. However, does this longevity and size imply that God founded it and granted it divine authority?
Scripture scholar Fr. Pablo Gadenz joins Jeff Cavins on The Bible Timeline Show to examine the biblical evidence for the authority bestowed upon the Church by Jesus Christ. The two explain the nature of this authority and why it is an indispensable characteristic of the one true Church.

I’ve read the majority of the gospels commentary on the “Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture” and it’s EXCELLENT. If there is a book in the New Testament you’re really interested in, go pick up that specific volume! You will not be disappointed. I cannot wait for the Old Testament to be released.

In the book of Hosea what is the significance of him addressing Ephraim specifically and not Israel?

After I listened to WLC and the Canaanite slaughter, I decided to read the whole shabang. What struck me is how the whole of Israel, was under one leader, Moses, who was succeeded by Joshua, and it was under his authority, that they marched and conquered those nations. Without that structure, this would have never occurred since the slaughter would have been a divisive issue. This begs the question, that if Israel was not one nation, with the one appointed leader, Israel would not have its own nation, and calls into question whether Jesus would have ever came into existence through the means of which he came.

Father Pablo, you are mistaken, in 2 Samuel 7:12-16, the Lord speaks through the prophet Nathan, and declares a Messianic prophecy from David’s offspring. The reason that it is a Messianic prophecy is the fact that in 2 Samuel 7:14 the Lord specifically states, “I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me.” Solomon is not his son and the Lord is not his father. David misunderstands the prophecy to mean his son Solomon. In actuality David disobeys God by continuing to build the temple by supplying the material for the temple. God was specific in 2 Samuel 7:6-7, “I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” God did not want the temple to be built; the Lord allowed the temple to be built. As you read in the Bible, we have free will and when we disobey God then we suffer the punishment for the disobedience. David went against God’s will several times (e.g., the census he took of Israel) and God punished David. The unfortunate part about the census punishment is that David was selfish. He should have choose the punishment which resulted in the least amount of death (David being pursued by his foes for 3 months). Instead he said to Gad (2 Samuel 24:14) “I am in great distress; let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into human hands.” The Lord chose the punishment for David, the one that inflicted the most amount of death (pestilence for three days), killing 70,000 Israelites due to David’s cowardice in not choosing a punishment that would effect the least amount of Israeli lives (David being pursued by his foes for 3 months - 2 Samuel 24:13). Plus Father, how can you compare Jesus to the wicked Solomon. God promised the offspring of David a throne of kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:13), “I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom,” (2 Samuel 7:12). This is meaning Jesus! His kingdom is forever. David’s ancestry loses their kingdom power but not Jesus.

✝️This is what the Bible says you should do with your children.
    Deut. 28:53
"Then because of the dire straights to which you will be reduced, you will eat your own children, the flesh of your sons and daughters whom the Lord has given you."
