Magic Johnson: NBA Finals Highlights (1980-88)

  • The title is a bit misleading because I didn't include any highlights from the '83 and '84 Finals since the Lakers were defeated both times. Instead I chose to focuse on just the championship seasons. This is a video that I've wanted to make for a while now because I felt Magic wasn't getting enough recognition on UA-cam. It was also something I wanted to do for younger fans like myself who never got to see legends like Magic when he played and for older fans who might want to relive the good old days. A few things stood out in my mind while editing these games. I knew Magic had led the league in steals for a few years but I had no idea he was such a good team defender. I've often seen people say that his defense was horrible which wasn't the case. Clearly he wasn't a standout individual defender but he was no slouch either. Another thing that stood out to me was the fact that he was so poised in the 1980 Finals despite the fact that he was only 20 years old at the time. From the day he stepped onto an NBA court he was ready to dominate and we saw a glimpse of his potential with that stellar Game 6 performance in Philly. That performance as well as the series' he had against Boston in '87 and Detroit in '88 when he was counted on to score more rank as some of the greatest Finals performances of all-time. It wasn't just the fact that Magic was able to contribute to five championships but that he was so great when it mattered most. The true legends perform well on the biggest stage.
This is what places Magic among the greatest we've ever seen. It's no coincidence that the Lakers were a good team and suddenly turned into an all-time great when he arrived. Magic brought so many things to the table that elevated the play of his teammates. His infectious personality, his great leadership, his competitive drive, the unselfish play and most importantly, taking a backseat to Kareem so the team's chemistry wouldn't take a hit. Over the course of his 13 years in the NBA the Lakers made 9 Finals appearances, never won less than 54 games and won 5 championships in arguably the greatest era in history. So sit back and enjoy the greatest point guard and Laker of all-time at his absolute best.

Just look how fast the game was. Magic was lightning. He could have led The league in scoring easily. At least 3-4 times if he was about ego. But he wasn’t. He let Kareem have that for the team. Ultimate team player. He’s the greatest point guard ever. Greatest court sense. Greatest passer. Just knew where everyone was at all time. Just... MAGIC!

People forget that Jordan only won in 91 because Worthy went down which freed up Pippen to primary Magic. Otherwise Magic finishes with at LEAST 7 rings, and I think he would have won at least one more if he stayed healthy. Jordan only started dominating when both Bird and Isaiah started breaking down for good.

Thank you so much for this. Magic is the greatest player to ever play the game. Nothing against MJ but Jordon had the the NBA, the refs and a lot of major corporations banking on him winning over the course of his career. Magic and the great Bird had to fight for everything they got against very rough competition that Jordon did not. Not to say MJ couldn't of been a success in the same regard but let's face it Magic didn't need 6 years to get started. Magic learned how to play team ball as a kid and he didn't need the greatest coach in the world to help with that.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever read. As if MJ didn't earn his championships. Of course he did! It took him so long to win because he had shitty teams! Magic had a great team right off the bat! I will admit that Magic made his teammates better in a way MJ never did, but they had completely different styles of play, so don't try to diminish MJ by comparing apples to oranges.

What made Magic so great in a different way- he succeeded against HIGH-caliber competition.
Record-wise, the worst team he faced in the Finals was Detroit's 54-27 team in 1988. He did it the hard way and he did it in spectacular fashion against worthy competition.

@@terrylanda4754 You’re a prime example of why Michael Jordan fans are the worst NBA fans by cherry picking and listing individual votes + team accomplishments only in Jordan's favor even though that could be done for many other players. I’ll give you an individual record that you conveniently ignored or forgot: Jordan remains the worst player ever in a 3 point contest. If you’re claiming someone is the #1 NBA player using individual records/statistics look no further than Wilt Chamberlain, as he has by far the most accomplished in NBA history, not Jordan.
You’re analyzing basketball as if it was a one on one game, which by the way Jordan declined the offer and refused to play against the taller/bigger/stronger Magic in a pay-per-view because he was afraid to lose. The fact is that any intelligent coach would start a team with Magic over Jordan because he brought more to the table, meaning he immediately improved any team he ever played by maximizing the potential of his teammates. Jordan was primarily a selfish ballhog that played only one position efficiently and scored lots of points while Magic was a tactical mastermind, a coach on the field, with way more responsibilities and greater court vision and basketball IQ than Jordan. Magic could play and dominate every single position unlike Jordan. Magic was a better leader, teammate, passer, ball handler, rebounder, just as good in steals, just as athletic considering he was much taller and played at a faster pace, more clutch, could and would score if needed, and had many more triple doubles in his career proving that he was a more all-around player. Magic went to way more NBA Finals than Jordan in a much more competitive decade and he lead his teams to more wins. If Magic didn’t have to retire earlier due to HIV, he would have even more opportunities to win more NBA titles. Magic lead the Lakers to 5 NBA championships in 13 seasons and his teams were always contenders unlike Jordan who was a part of many losing teams that didn’t even make it to the playoffs. Magic was always a winner and top player in high school, college, and the NBA unlike Jordan who needed to wait for legendary players such as Dr. J, Kareem, and Bird to either retire or physically deteriorate and completely changed the dynamic of their respective teams, in addition to having an amazing coach in Phil Jackson to teach him how to be less selfish and play team oriented basketball in order to start winning.
In conclusion, there’s no comparison: Magic was a much more sophisticated player than Jordan for anyone who either played organized basketball or has basketball knowledge and understands the game at a deeper level (beyond who scored more points) but for casual fans who grew up watching ESPN highlights and were influenced by Nike commercials, they are usually the typical uneducated Michael Jordan fans.
PS: Magic was a humble player so he also mentioned on different occasions that Bird, Kareem, Wilt, and Kobe were the greatest NBA players ever.

MJ dominated Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley. He got 6 rings when Magic was out due to HIV, Bird was out w a bad back, and Isaiah Thomas was done. 20+ assist 4 times in the finals. 2 triple doubles and 18 assist 2nd game against Detroit. You won't see that kind of stats now. A forward couldn't guard him, because of his speed and eyes. Guards can't guard him, he's usually 6 inches taller, easy post up. Double team him and he's at his best finding the mismatch.

Not trying to sound corny but it was an absolute blessing for me to be able to experience these errors. I watched the NCAA finals in 1979. Magic Johnson was a wonder in that game. No one passed the ball as much and as skilled as that young man. If you watched the tapes, Bird and his team studied the Michigan State team. Later, you see Bird in the NBA imitating Magic. Watch the game and notice the difference.

Your watching highlights. Of course it's not like today's ugly ball, run down and shoot a 3. Magic, Scott and Cooper were great 3 point shooters. Bird had the 3 point record for 20 years or so. He won every year. His record year he hit all but 2, in the 3 point contest. I blame the Jordan era for kids practicing dunks and not good basketball. That,s why European teams beat our best College and sometime pro teams. Fundamental's wins games.

I agree. The Bulls could never get past Detroit or Boston, until 91. The reason was that they both had huge big men Parrish 7 foot Mchale 7 foot Bird 6'9. And of course Detroit were huge. Rodman used to frustrate Jordan, and he played Magic tough. He was the best defensive player in basketball. And best re bounder. Phil Jackson wanted him big time. Tremendous highlight reel, Dynasty. Thank you so much for taking the time to assemble this! There are many clips of his amazing plays but this really lets us relive his full greatness in the context of the games that mattered the most.
I was born and raised in LA. First NBA game I saw as a kid was the great '71-'72 team with Chamberlain, West, Goodrich, etc. When those guys left, I wondered if we'd ever see their likes again...
Then came Magic and that's when the show really began. With all respect due to other NBA greats, Magic tops my list of favorite players. I say that mostly because I never saw another player impact the _way_ the game was played -- not only in Laker Land but across the entire NBA. Thanks to him, the game increased in tempo and (with an equal nod to Larry Bird) suddenly it became all about the _assist_!
It was just an incredibly exciting era of basketball that merged all the flair and dynamic skill of the late-70s, ABA style of play with the unselfish teamwork and physical toughness of the earlier eras. For the first time ever, we were seeing "total basketball," and I think Magic led the way more than any other player.
Just the opinion of this one grateful fan...

As a lifelong Phoenix Suns fan who was seven years old when this game was played, the Showtime Lakers were in my opinion the best to ever do it. I hated them. Best fast break and when they were firing on all 8 cylinders, unbeatable. When the Suns managed to win a game or two over the Lakers in the regular season I considered it a successful season. They might not have had as many championships as the Bulls but in my opinion they were far more fun to watch. Grudging respect.

I know people appreciate scoring the most, and it's hard to understand how valuable a distributor like Magic is comparatively. However, in many ways, Magic (especially early in his career) was just as lethal as Michael. The dude was doing things no one had seen up to then. They would, quite literally, force a fast break after every rebound. And if they didn't have Magic it would not have worked.

I saw a show with analyst comparing modern teams to the old Laker/Celtic/Piston teams, and they were saying that the 80's/early 90's Lakers would just body up on today's teams. Players were bigger back then. Now it's all about a 6/10 player as a 3 point shooter. Or who can dunk the best. I hope young people can appreciate the speed of the game. When it's a 4 on 4 fast break, it's almost impossible to find an open man through the clutter at that pace. But Magic seemed to always know. As for 3 pointers Magic/ cooper/ Scott were all dead on 3 point shooters.

Nobody Touches Jordan I think we were robbed of a good, potentially classic finals in 89’ due to the injuries. Apparently Pat Riley thought the Lakers, after going 11-0 on the road to the finals, having gone deep into the postseason for 8 straight seasons, needed a high intensity mini-camp before the finals. Scott got injured for the series and Magic messed up his hamstring in game 2.
I think it was Detroit’s year and that they would have won, but it would have been a tough series that went 6, maybe 7 games. Instead, it was anti-climatic as fuck.
