With that said I appreciate the perspective, much of what was said, and I don't want to just say it's invalid. Instead I will give my perspective. I personally don't believe in judgement after death, but my self respect and happiness and sense of fulfillment are largely based on the good I do and my understanding of whether I'm acting in a way that the world would be better off if more acted that way. I have seen no correlation in my personal life between those of faith (or belief in judgement after death) and what I believe is virtuous behavior. Maybe there are just lots of fakes out there. Like I said, I don't want to invalidate. Morals are very important, especially in health care, and maybe there is some important value in this belief in judgement after death that would make me a better doctor if I were to become one. However, Ancient Greek people in general did not believe in life after death, eternal bliss or damnation the same way Christians do. There were also different mysteries, cultic religions which promised eternal bliss for their initiates only, but the majority of Greece believed only in a dim vision of the underworld where the spirits of dead reside as ghosts without pain or pleasure. So Dr Patrick operates on a mistaken premise here. The Hippocratic Oath might have been composed and used by such a little cult as I have just mentioned, a group of initiates of Asclepius, but that is another matter to discuss.

I don't believe you can be a Christian and take that oath, for in doing so you renounce the One True God of the bible. Would it not be the same as putting insence on the alter of Ceaser and saying Ceaser is Lord? Doing so would be a great compromise. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

I think it would be to anyone and everyone's edification to listen to and digest the thoughts of another, including some hyper-biased zealous, if that is what is what a speaker is claimed to be by some listener. To refuse to listen to another on the grounds that the other person is too opinionated speaks magnitudes about the character of the listener and the security of his/her belief system. To not listen to an argument in its entirety because it is a "too polar" argument allows for the views of the listener to be polarized by avoiding the opposite argument. In other words, one is guilty of willfully accepting confirmation bias by avoiding arguments against one's belief system.

How is being "extremely opinionated" a moral problem? The great and venerated thinkers of history are extremely opinionated. No one gets to a position of power by being un-opinionated.
Moreover, you have failed to provide a single logically substantial reason that argues properly against a point that he makes, and instead choose to fling baseless buzzwords. Interesting points are made here. But unfortunately, it all comes down to this: striving for the best due to FEAR of judgement. Seriously?? The ultimate reason you have for striving to be a good doctor is fear of judgement when you die??? I think he says at some point that a man that does not fear judgement after death can do whatever the hell he wants. Well, what if I told you that not all of us are so fucking SELFISH?? I do not believe in any God, I do not believe I will be judged after death, yet I still strive to do the very best for my patient's heath and comfort, the latter being something that is usually overlooked. I work hard to be sure I am up to date and as well informed as I can possibly be. I also extend this care outside of work, to people that in the past I may have not bothered with. Still with no fear of judgement whatsoever. Instead of FEAR, the thing that keeps me going is thinking that" this is it, there is no other life, no judgement, no nothing after death, so better to try and make the most of it, try to do as much good and offer as much to everyone around you as you can while you are still here, make it count , be of use." So, yeah, I would still run away from a doctor who is religious and mixes those morals into his work. FEAR should NOT be a motivator. For anyone.
+darkangelcl4 I like a few of ur comments, though I would like to challenge ur thoughts on the lack of a God or a life after this one...and if u do work in the field as a doctor I would love to open a discussion on any questions u may have on treatments for any ailments u are having problems with...I work as a research analyst within multi-interdisciplinary fields of science, medicine, and a few other interrelated fields...we work with Universities and Institutes all over the planet, and at this point we have for the most part cured virtually every disease known to man...it is only a matter of information dissemination at this point...so I would love to help if possible, as u stated that u are always attempting to keep up to date on the latest...our work is typically outside the journals though, so please keep this in mind... ur friend, abracadabra
To downsize Dr John Patrick just because off him being religious and talking about morality in the practice as doctor is condradicting the rationality of atheism. He brought on many good points.
Would be a lot more enjoyable to listen to his arguments if he wasn't dripping with condescension and self-righteousness. Also, as a biologist, it's great fun to listen to physicians who clearly have little background in evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, etc. whinge on about the shortcomings of evolution. Dr. Patrick is an examplar of the many differences between research scientists and clinicians, despite his references to time spent "in the laboratory".
This is philosophy. You do the best because that is the best thing to do not because god has said so. So hard to continue to listen to this bias. I am doing it with regret that I am waiting my time.
Tried to skip ahead to see if it was just the beginning that was nonsense and found him arguing against Darwin. Take your self righteous Christianity somewhere else; it doesn't belong in medicine or science.

All I heard is your private life.
Nothing about Hippocras............
Okay Mr. Condescension. Projecting
This is philosophy. You do the best because that is the best thing to do not because god has said so. So hard to continue to listen to this bias. I am doing it with regret that I am waiting my time.
Honestly homie sounds full of himself in 1st 10 seconds of video. Jus sayin
Could he breathe in any louder?!! 😖
W1ll P0w3R
Yup! The sky’s the limit!!!
.
Blah blah blah where is Hippocrates? Stop sniffing drugs
Is anyone else wondering wtf that sharp inbreathing is all about? Obnoxious to say the least.
inhaling Oxygen
Came to learn about Hippocrates, but couldn't make it passed the religious BS opening.
Tried to skip ahead to see if it was just the beginning that was nonsense and found him arguing against Darwin. Take your self righteous Christianity somewhere else; it doesn't belong in medicine or science.
IMO, In this case, it would be good to listen to the whole thing before deciding.
Wow a doctor teaching doctors his personal opinions and no logic. Wow shameful.
Religion has nothing to do with trust. Most religions do not suport trust
What a lot of religious BS.
