Blimey, this was 4 years ago.
I bet you don't remember what a pain it was first time you did this, ol.
Well i for one am very grateful you made this vid.
I'm in the process of rebuilding a mk2 for my son, and this saved me a lot of head scratching .
    Many thanks 👍

Ha! That's pretty true! And no worries, at the time there was no video guides online so decided to do this one. I'm on another mk2 now lol.

FYI an old sunroof seal has nothing to do with wet foot wells. Water should pass the seal and then go down the drain channels.
Wet footwells will be caused by blocked drains in the scuttle, damaged bonnet cable grommet, leaking matrix or leaking door seals.

Agreed. I had cleaned the channels out and were operating correctly, however in this instance too much water was bypassing it and the channels could not deal with it.

Great, thanks. This job could be done in just 30 minutes, but I spent 3 hours cleaning everything and double checking. Had a bit of rust in the corners so had to treat those and then put some black insulation tape over the rim, before pressing down the gasket. A squirt of silicone spray helped on the corners. I cut the gasket with a dremel for the metal part, and scissors for the plastic bit left over. I cut it with about 1-2mm extra so at the end, I butted the gasket ends together and then hammered the rest of it home going back the way I'd come. Also, a good opportunity to clean everything out around the sunroof mechanism.

Really useful vid but I wanted to see how you finished. How did you cut it and but it up at the end? And did you have to fill/glue the gap at the end?

    • @aly369

You just cut it to length at the end and refit, there is no special glue used to fill the gap there. Similar to how you would do a door seal.

Hahah! How much did this sunroof seal sting you? mines in desperate need of a replacement

Costed me £67 which wasn't too bad, has definitely helped my issue though. Still got a leak coming in from somewhere.

Ahh not too bad! mine was fine until I took my headliner out, I must of disturbed something and now it pisses water all over me when I brake for a traffic light.

If still leaking after this fix check your drain pipes are not clogged up...
