- Jon Anderson & Todmobile performing Awaken, live at the Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík, Iceland, Iceland on November 15, 2013.
"This verson of 'Awaken' with Todmobile lifted my heart and soul so much, I want everyone to enjoy it.....the wonderful musicians and singers of the band plus the choir and Orchestra there in Iceland two years ago really sounded amazing to me, the proof is in this video... what a wonderful experience it was for all of us to honor the music of Yes. love and 'light' Jon" - Jon Anderson
For 45 years, I have wanted to say this to Yes, and Jon Anderson...
Thank you.
You can say it now
I thanked him at a meet and greet
Crazy to think that five young guys in their twenties created and performed this masterpiece 50+ yrs ago. One of the best ever
Jon Anderson was 31 or 32 years-old and Steve Howe was 29 or 30 years-old when the song, “Awaken” was recorded.
Whenever my soul needs a good cleansing, I come here.
me too ❤
I hear you it is so cleansing isn't it.
I listen to this masterpiece 3 times a week 😊
I'm in my mid 50's, been listening to Jon Anderson since I was 15. I've now listened to this video on a large screen TV, in private, with stereo sound like 30 times. I cry like a baby every single time. Thank you Jon for a lifetime of under appreciated rock music. ❤❤❤
Same here.
Im allmost 60.....loving them since i was a little girl...9 years old or even less... thanks to my older brother who i loved the most....
I simply don't understand how Todmobile managed to create the most extraordinary and exultant version of this song ever recorded! It's a flipping miracle! Jon is, of course, better than ever! The guitar is precise and full of power and authority; the choir otherworldly. The orchestra adds depth and dimension. Somehow, this has just become the definitive version of this extraordinary piece. Magnificent! Thank You!
Right on!!
I first heard this song played live on the Union tour in 1991, and it was magical. If someone had told me back then that the definitive version of Awaken had not been heard yet, but it would be recorded 22 years later, by Jon Anderson and a band from Iceland, I would have thought that was highly unlikely. But that is exactly what happened.
You are dead right. Only wish I could have been there.
@@tezer881 - Can you imagine it? The walls and floors must have been shaking and the tears flowing. Incredibly beautiful.
@@tezer881 It was magnificent. A day that I will never forget!
I have seen Yes in concert at least five times, and I have several of their live albums and live DVDs. I have heard them play Awaken in person three times, and I've heard several performances of Awaken on CD, DVD, and UA-cam. I have never seen or heard as impressive a performance of Awaken as this 2013 JA+Todmobile performance. I'm not sure if I have heard as impressive a performance of ANY Yes song. If I could give this video 1000 likes, I would.
Thank you!
I've watched this recording maybe 100 times in the last 2 years since I came across it. It is the most beautiful version of Awaken I've heard. Everyone looks like they are having so much fun recording this. Thank yous to Jon, Toddmobile and the orchestra for putting this out there for everyone to listen to and watch.
Oui, c'est une superbe version ❤️
I could not agree more!!
Me to!!
I am just speechless. But I know a lot of words to leave it that simple. I heard this song for the first time when I was 12, 13...since then it's a different experience every time. Watch Yes live 3 times a Jon once, in Salvador. What a great time. Wonderful. Brilliant. Magnificent. Thanks
This is not a musical experience, this is a spiritual experience...
In my opinion, this is the most spiritual, uplifting live musical performance ever made.
still here in 2024! remember buying the album those days and was blown away. This version here is unbelievable - nearly makes me cry. Those days are gone forever but the music will stay forever. Thanks to Jon and Yes for their incredible art and sophisticated music - plus this ensemble who made it come alive again. Excellent work!
Seriously, if the last 6 minutes of this doesn't bring you to near tears, then you might want to check your pulse...you may be dead inside.
Thankfully I appear to be very alive inside. Not merely near to tears....
I cried. Grown man 54 years blubbering wreck.
seeing another reiteration of this comment yet again made me die of boredom though
@@cosmicchong Exact same for me. 54 also.
@@NowhereMan7 How anal retentive for a troll.
Such an epic song. One of the favorite songs in my life. The entire song from beginning to the very end is so moving and grand.
This has always been Anderson's favorite Yes song. I think the best part of this absolutely amazing performance is watching Jon. You can tell he's absolutely blown away by Todmobile's accompaniment. The "orchestra" and choir are so good, so "on", that Jon is just floating in Heaven throughout the song. Anderson gives it his all, and the band pays him back. The end of the number is just magnificent, and watching an emotional Jon immediately turn around and thank the band while being awestruck at the same time is pretty cool. The best "Awaken" I've ever heard.
Couldn't agree more,#
Wish I had been there.
The 20 YES concerts that I have been to & ARW were the best
nights of my life.
Very well said friend, this perfomance is wonderful!
We've been awakened!
you nailed it
I want to frame this comment and hang it on my wall
Sends instant chills when Jon starts singing.
No one sings like Jon. He's unique, and the music of the classic Yes years (pre-1980) is matchless. He uplifts the soul because he is an uplifted soul. At the age of 19, during the 1977 'Going for the One' UK tour, I was fortunate to witness Yes perform Awaken live. Nearly 40 years on, he and the music sound just as great to me, if not greater, because with maturity and the ever-increasing human suffering on Earth, his spiritual message to awaken -- to embrace and radiate love and light -- has become even more urgent and necessary. Thanks, Jon, for shining your love light on us.
totally agree with Rob Stuart!
+Adriano Mondini DITTO!!!!
DIITTO ?
+Rob Stuart , totaly agree with you my friend, i was in san Diego ca. when the ABWH,tour, coming to the event, from Ensenada Mexico, and it was just great!
He is truly and angel on earth....No one can compare with him..Timeless Yes
I've been a Yes fan since 1970. "Awaken" is my all-time favorite piece of music by Yes. I hadn't heard of Todmobile before stumbling upon this rendition today. How faithful and true is this arrangement to the original version! And in some places, as many here have remarked, better. Mr. Anderson, this is not flattery, but fact: you sound better than ever. Much heartfelt thanks to you and all the members of Yes at the time of "Going for the One" (Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman and White) for composing and executing such a brilliant work, and to the members of Todmobile for arranging and reproducing it so eloquently and accurately. AMAZING.
+roxfan33 I totally agree, not only is this probably the best version of Awaken I've ever heard, it was as you say, almost perfectly reproduced from the original, and it's great to see Jon back on top form. Yes is very much poorer without him and Rick Wakeman.
See my other reply above. Also, I still believe that their signature all-time masterpiece is Close To The Edge.
Agreed. Greatest work of the rock era, IMO.
I agree 100% Jon's voice is perfection here. I love the choir too! GREAT video!
I've been a YES fan since 1972. Have seen them live 7X, & saw Awaken performed by the band in person. Truth be told, I never ranked Awaken in my top 8 of favorite YES masterpieces. A Great Song? Absolutely, but in spite of the fact that I dearly loved some parts of it, especially the ending, I still found it its overall construction slightly lacking, at least compared to the others I ranked higher.
*_Having said all that_* I must say that this presentation of Awaken was absolutely wonderful. Todmobile's arrangement of Awaken substantially enhanced the song's appeal _to my ears_ & I can't say enough good things about what I just heard. And yes, Jon Anderson's perfect accompaniment was KEY. I guess I never imagined that my impression of a Yes composition could ever be significantly enhanced by watching an inspired musical group successfully giving it the honor it deserves...
I have never envied an audience this much.
Absolutely incredible performance. Jon Anderson must have waited his whole life to get to nail this amazing song with this incredible band. *THIS* is the definitive live version of this majestic masterpiece. Jon and Todmobile - you have made History, when all you probably intended to do was give a decent performance...
Sir, with respect, your opinion is valid, of course. But witness the joy on the faces of the members of Todmobile, especially the guitarist, who looks like he waited for this moment all of his life. I submit to you that you have it reversed. Todmobile waited to do this concert with JON.
@@kpteer I think they both probably waited for this time. It's really pretty special. Stars aligned, an all that.
I completely agree. The original album version of Awaken is brilliant, and there are many great live versions by Yes (one of my favorites being from the recent Anderson/Rabin/Wakeman live DVD). But in my book, this right here is the definitive recording of this masterpiece, for all time.
Preaching truth brother. This is the penultimate version of Awaken! 👍😎
I saw Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe in the 90's at a pre concert national tour in Whitley Bay Ice Rink (yes, this did happen) and they were f***ing amazing. They also performed Awaken which was stupendous!
the man with the golden voice ... still there ... nothing is lost
one of the best songs by Yes
Jon Anderson is a gifted artist. And he has always used his gift in a positive way. He is always focused on bringing people together and lifting their spirits through music. For 50 years, he has stayed true to this calling. It's remarkable. This performance of Awaken is stunning.
Jon Anderson is the finest man in music !!
If there was music that was played in heaven the last 6 minutes would be it; angelic voices of worship, truly emotional, Jon voice is simply flawless and Todmobile have achieved perfection….
Brings tears to my eyes , this is beautiful music , also shed a tear for Chris , Yes always in my heart !
I share those tears....amazing tooo amazing.
The most beautiful version of the most beautiful song ever 😍🎵🎶
Absolutely magnificent version of this song !!!! 👍👍 Jon Andersons voice is incredible as ever 👏
Jon has never sung AWAKEN so well and I think this performance with Todmobile has never been played better. Awesome. Just wish I could buy a dvd of the concert
Jesus. That may be the best version of Awaken I have ever heard. The only close 2nd would be the version performed on the Union tour. This is truly spectacular. The Choir is a EXCELLENT touch
I totally agree AMAZING
I agree. Kudos to everyone involved. I can't imagine what it must have been like to have actually been there.
yes, agree. Superb instrumentalists and vocalists throughout. The keyboardist has the chops for sure
It's a truly great and unique version of Awaken, but I disagree that it's the best, but that's a subjective judgement. I think that the original recording is still the best, exactly the way it was done in the studio, and often performed by that YES cast. YES can never be...never was.... it's best without Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire, and Alan White. Those guys along with Jon was the ultimate YES lineup.
Easily the best, makes the studio version look quite lame.
Not just a song but a magnificent piece of music to be considered a classical masterpiece for all times.
Best ever version of my favourite song of all time by my favourite vocalist of all time. Play this every day, makes life worth celebrating. Thank God for Jon Anderson, what a genius !
even after all these years... all the many many times i've listened to this... i still get chills...
Jon Anderson THE VOICE OF YES.
Best «Awaken» ever
Amazing, the way it should sound today, and no way Jon getting tired of singing it
This is the absolute best version of “Awaken” I have ever heard!
I bought Going For The One in 1977 and have played it countless times ever since. Through good times and bad it's always been there.
It's now September 2021 and I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face as if it's the first time. How have I never heard this arrangement before? Truly, truly fantastic.
Thank you Jon. Thank you for everything.
It doesn't get any better than this. RIP Chris and Alan though. Miss them.
Jon sounds so amazing! This is a fantastic version. I could not hold back tears listening to this. So many memories. This is a journey through time with the one of the greatest singers and song writers of our time and one of the most powerful influences on my life!
John Pirrone My sentiments exactly John. As a child of the sixties, I grew up on Yes, and this song in particular moves me like no other music can. The psychoacoustic effects on my nervous system are, in a word, otherworldly ! And thank you thank you Todmobile for giving Jon this most wonderful of renditions, allowing him to soar to his rightful and deserved place amongst the senior seraphic singers and songwriters of our time. Freakin' timeless !
John Pirrone Here, Here, I second that statement!!!
+Hans Christian-Anderson Absolutely.
Yes friend, I completely agree with you, Jon is a genius!
Thanks times ten I all I can say. With my two cool beer bottles. You broght forward memories of my youth days, this is the best version of this song I hear after many years. You did a good and brilliant job. Again, thanks times 10 plus one for Anderson...Ula from Samoa.
Brings me to tears every time I watch it. One of the most beautiful performances ever.
The most beautiful piece of music ever written and performed
Man, I literally cry listening to this.
Thank God for Jon Anderson and thank you Jon for sharing the beautiful talent God gave you with all of us. The musicians of Todmobile also deserve the highest commendation for their flawless execution of this Yes masterpiece.
This is about the 50th time I have listened to this. It is so great to read comments from so many other people who "get" this amazing music!
I cannot stop watching this performance, brings tears to my eyes every time. This is Jon Anderson at his absolute best. Yes were the undoubted kings of progressive rock, and the soaring majesty of many of their songs, especially the earlier material, is something the younger generation will never understand.
I am 65 and I had forgotten how good Yes are, my grandson started listening to them and rekindled my love for Yes and Jon Anderson. I play this time and again and it never fails to bring emotional tears.
I bought 'Going for the One' in 1977 in the USA as an 18 year old exchange student. 'Awaken' transcended time and place and has been one of my top tracks ever since. When I saw this video here for the first time, it was so heartwarming to meet other people who just appreciate this masterpiece. Jon Anderson seems humbled by this orchestra, and they seem humbled by his appearance. Just fantastic! 😊
What this is all about I couldn’t tell you, but it’s just about the most uplifting fifteen minutes of music performance I can find.
I keep coming back to this. So moving. I love watching how much Jon is loving the song. At the end when he turns to the band and says Ohhhhhh! Makes me cry, It's so amazingly beautiful. Masterpiece. Nothing compares.
Wow!! Cannot even put into words how wonderful of a treat it was to watch this just now. Jon's voice is one of the finest in the world and he STILL sounds like an angel at 68. The guitarist handles that Steve Howe insanity with impeccable precision. Probably one of the best live renditions of Awaken ever!
I want a woman to look at me the way the guitarist looks at Jon. I cry happy buckets every time I play this.
I personally think that this is the closest that rock music has come to Beethoven's 9th . Jon Andersons voice is just amazing.
closer to Beethoven's 2nd movement - in his diaper
No one has ever said it better. Thank you, my friend.
Even members of YES have said this was the best song they ever did!
@@SuperJV4x aww bless your heart
@@TsukiumisGuy also best version?
I met the man of my dreams at this concert!
This took my breath away.... and almost brought me to tears... music I grew up with and sounding as fresh as it did all those years ago. Timeless and this version is magnificent.......truly magnificent
Yes!
I definitely teared up! What a performance
This song is truly a masterpiece!
After seeing these comments about the last 6 minutes of the song making people tear up, I didn't believe it, but I don't know how but I was teary eyed
P E R F E C T I O N !!! truly a stellar performance of a masterpiece.
I grew up on the music of Yes and Anderson's voice became the standard in the performance of this fantastic group. Charisma, voice and expression - these are his postulates! Todmobile musicians are simply GREAT, just like the MASTER. There are simply no words to express my gratitude for this music and VOICE!
No other progressive rock band's music from the 70s can fit in so well to the 21st century as that of Jon Anderson' YES.
"Oh Closely guided plan.....Awaken in our hearts!!"
the most amazing version of Awaken ever. Even better than the 2003 versions. I had never heard of Todmobile prior to this video, and have such a profound sense of appreciation for the truly sensitive, caring, and artistic endeavor they took to perform this piece. It's clear Jon feels the dedication of the performance given.
Not ashamed to say this brought tears to my eyes I have seen Yes with Jon many times and performing this piece, however this is a definite masterpiece of interpretation and delivered with such feeling I'm almost lost for word's thank you so much for posting an absolute treasure.
Six billion people...I can instantly recognize only a few voices. I can always recognize this voice. Wherever Jon is, Yes is. Miss Chris and Alan, love Rick and Steve, but Jon proves it here.
The ONLY dude I know that can sing like an Angel
At the "Progressive Music Awards 2016" in London's world-famous Globe Theatre Jon was elected "2016 Prog God". A Prog Music lover who works for the European Space Agency held a speech in which he quoted a colleague saying: "John Anderson is the only one I know, who is trying to understand this universe, while living in another one". ... In other words, Prog God Jon is from outer space. With his Heavenly voice, music, messages and melodies Jon is trying to reach us ordinary people on this Earth. Jon surrounded by angels succeeds in magically enchanting our senses while lifting up high our soul. ... This 2013 live version of "Awaken" is pure BLISS, ... Jon's beautiful universe in perfect union and harmony with ours.
This will always be my favorite song ever written
Along with Pink Floyd's "Echo's" and Genesis's "Firth of Fifth" :-)
I saw yes early 70,s in manchester uk, blew me away. Here i am aged 64 living in australia how time flies god bless you jon...
An unbelievable performance of my all time favorite Yes (master) piece. Jon's vocals are unchanged! A true gift. Thank you.
A trully amazing performance! An ultimate spiritual masterpiece!!!
Like being in the coolest Church ever . Thank you, Jon Anderson ❤
I mean, I walked down the aisle to the closing section. My God, this is the closest thing to heaven. I cry without fail every time. Each time I think, this is how Wakeman should've played it. I adore it.
A masterpiece if there ever was one.
I love this performance of "Awaken" which is one of my favourite tracks of all time. Jon sounds fantastic and the musicians and other singers perform brilliantly. Thanks for sharing :-)
I've seen Yes perform this on numerous occasions but this is hands down the best version I've ever heard.
Spectacular performance! Jon's voice has only gotten better through the years.
AWAKEN.....omg...I have no words for this but..if you 'get' the song you are lucky.Jon is a master and an angel....the ending was like heaven..
First, Jon is amazing. He isn't phoning anything in, he's bringing it! And hitting his high vocals with amazing ability at any age! This is truly special because the guitar player is on a plane with Howe and when did you ever see a British or American guitarist use a Yamaha electric guitar? Sounds as good any guitar Howe has used on Awaken I'd have to say, not the least of which is due to the player's prowess. Next, the keyboardist is really "spot-on" in re-creating Wakeman's arsenal of textures. Some things, like most of Wakeman's solos and fills just can't be improved upon. Finally, the orchestra and vocalists just push this way over the top, to some place ethereal. I mean to the level Yes would be quite humbled and proud of simultaneously. Wow, makes you wish Jon (and, Rick) were back with Yes and they would play as in the original incarnation but with satellite musicians - such as with a full orchestra again. Sadly, this won't be as news of Chris' passing broke yesterday. This is suddenly much more poignant. In fact, I find it something of a left-handed tribute to Chris. The bass player here chose not to attempt to play in the style of Chris (as far as I could hear and tell) and maybe that speaks volumes as to Chris since everything else couldn't have been more amazing and over the top. Me thinks Chris Squire was a singular bassist/vocalist the likes of which only come around once. Bravo Jon
John Werner Superb Post John!!!
John Werner Nice post. Rare stuff.
Wonderful words John which I wholeheartedly agree with. I choked up a little when you mentioned Chris.
Some even comparing Davidson with Aanderson is more a disgrace than logic. He is Yes vocal sound.
Chris Poland uses Yamaha gtrs
My #1 most favorite tune to listen to and play. Jon just goes cosmic.
Jon forever the voice of YES and the voice of millions of people. Perpetual gratitude to this wonderful man
Maximum execution of voice by Jon, second to none and surely one of the best of all time including the concerts when he was with YES, admirable and impressive!
Stunning... timeless... classic... words fail. Might be the best ever version just simply because of the immensity of the orchestra and angelic choir.
This was a major dose of euphoria for me this morning. Thank you Todmobile for bringing the joy and spirit to this incredible piece of music. We should all be singing so well at 68, Mr Anderson...and clearly their dedication moved you as well.
Jacob Moon AMEN!!!
I thought Jon had 12 years on me like Sir Paul. '68 was a surprise, and joy, that Jon and Chris had started this amazing musical journey that "long ago" (I'm 63). '72, some killer players from Tau Ceti flew by the Earth, and transmuted music to these incredibly receptive musicians, able to interpret, what "they were feeling and hearing in their Higher Minds". Actually rewriting what was transmuted into something YES created from it and from themselves, originality never heard or attempted, before. YES, have been together for so long that the Tau Cetians have come back a few times, but I can't tell you if they've introduced themselves to all the boys, or not. Or, re-inspired them to greater music? What do you think
I have so much feelings when I hear this song. I have never heard such an emotional driven song in my entire life, and I wish that John Anderson would play with Yes again.
I agree wholeheartedly with all of you! Jon is definately an Angel and we are all blessed to have him here on this earth with us. No group in my entire life has ever touched me the way YES has! Not everyone gets them but that's ok, just makes us true YES fans more unique!! Jon is a bright shining diamond in the ruff. His music never gets old and it always lifts me up, if I'm not having such a great day all l need to do is put on anything that Jon sings and I'm immediately transported into another realm!!! So thankful to have been able to see Yes and Jon several times in concert and to meet them all. This song truly touches my soul and l weep tears of joy during it, gives me chills everytime!! May you all have a wonderful experience when you listen to this spiritual masterpiece, Godspeed!! 💛😁🤗🌞🦋🌎🎵🎶
His voice hasn't changed a bit. Still extraordinary as it was then. They don't make music like this anymore.
I've seen YES and played bass since their very early days (am now 60). This track has been my favorite since 1977 and this version is simply the best. Intelligently built up to it's climax at 14:27. I get goose pumps, cry and feel I'm in heaven. How can their be only 85K views of this version? Todmobile & Choir does an amazing job at replicating Awaken. Need to re-perform this show indefinitely :)
Love from Sweden 👍😘🇸🇪
My soul simply left and went to the most wonderful place where my soul always has longed to set its roots and never to return. I’m in shock that I missed out on YES for so many years. A utter truly great masterpiece for the books of history. Out of my deepest respect, thank you Jon Anderson. Extraordinary.
The most moving piece of music I will ever hear. Unbelievable performance here! Jon's voice is absolute perfection.
Holy crap had chills and cried through the whole f'n thing!!! Jon should never ever play again unless it's with an orchestra and choir!!!!
hi hi we would like to keep it that way:)
💖
His 1000 hands tour is pretty stellar in its own right
With two drummers the piece HAD to stay together the way it ought to. I was pounding the desk and crying at the same time. Thanks for all of the years Jon!!
Watching Jon Anderson and Yes after all these years, its very emotional. We are just now gaining some mortal understanding, that our lives have almost passed us by, because we are all so much closer to leaving our human existence and going home again.
My favourite song by anyone ever. Period.
This is nothing short of amazing. Jon, you are wonderful! And the band is incredible.
I love this song and video so much. What a beautiful version!
Perhaps the best sounding live video on all of UA-cam. P.S. The guitarist is saying to himself: Pinch me, I'm dreaming.
Glorious -- never better.
Always thought this is the best piece of music ever created by humanity and now I'm sure of it!
Without doubt the greatest rendition of Awaken EVER !! I'm going to see Yes in 10 days, if they come close to matching this then life will be good.
Maybe you have to come to Iceland
This literally brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic version that I will certainly visit more than just once. A reminder of what wonders humans can create when given, not only the freedom to do so, but when not motivated by things other than the almighty dollar. I fear we shall never see or hear such originality created again anytime soon...
Wow, they have ~40 musicians on-stage, and everyone is very well-rehearsed, and Todmobile is an excellent guitarist, totally in control of all the technique he needs. The arrangement is really well-done, a nicely calibrated amount of horns and other acoustic instruments. The mini-choir backing Jon more closely is brilliant (and they're ridiculously good-looking people! Go Iceland 😁!). And this is one of the great ecumenical prayers ever written. Yes really struck gold with this one. If you don't feel _better_ after that orgasmic circle of fifths just before the coda, you prolly need therapy.
I think people will organize and make this music again for a very long time. Still can't believe how well Jon's voice seems to be holding up.
"Like that time I ran away, turned around and you were standing close to me."
I can't begin to explain why, but this line impacts me deeply....
A truly beautiful song, executed by a beautifully minded group of people.
Thank you. For everything.
I had chills the whole time listening to this. To reiterate another comment, and not to disparage the band in any way, but this version of the song seems to be the way it is supposed to sound, how it is supposed to come across. It is, by far, the best version of this great masterpiece that I have ever heard.
Thank you!:)
You are most welcome! :)
Dan Brooks Yeah I agree....Wow, so much love flowing!
Tod Todson you are amazing! And all of the people present in this video. Watching the look on your face while playing this was rewarding enough
Holy crap - I thought I heard the ultimate live version in 1977. This was beyond gorgeous.
Workings of Man, I love you Jon
