I like this design just because it diesnt require any welding. Most people use steel angle iron to built these.
Ya, this is still a little on the heavy side, but not compared to angle iron!
have you considered attaching the bottom bunk to the legs of the top bunk to make them both pivot up at the same time?
Yes, I considered that, but honestly, the 2x6 frames were pretty heavy as-is, and we wanted to be able to use only one bunk without having both out at the same time.
nice design with independent operations of top and bottom beds. My question is with the kind of hinges you have used, ,how are you going to close it once regular mattresses are put on the beds?
Hi, thanks for the comments. I just used some standard door hinges from home depot, such as these: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-1-2-in-x-1-4-in-Radius-Satin-Nickel-Door-Hinge-14985/202558077 . You just close it by using by using an eye and hook system. The mattress fits because it's thin enough and the 2x4s are recessed enough to compress a bit.
link doesn't work. Everyone links to that same DIY network page but there's nothing there. Would love to actually have some plans to follow to build something like this.
We are interested in building these to go inside our RV. Would you be willing to share plans ?
Unfortunately I don't have proper plans that I went by, but maybe I'll put something together. Basically, some 2x4's, 3/4" plywood or similar, a few hinges, long screws and wood screws.
It would be wonderful for people without building experience ...like me lol
Here is a link to plans that will yield a very similar result:

Ok I guess I’m stupid, but what is the point of a Murphy bed if there is no room for a mattress ?
We fit 4" memory foam mattresses on there just fine! If you wanted to go with a deeper one, you could arrange the main 2x4 crossbeams in the other orientation.
You crack me up. I wondered what I was watching for a second there but really cool that you’re doing all this carpentry in the middle of nowhere. Love your outdoor space
Thanks, it's great out there and it feels really rewarding to slowly build/evolve an off-grid camp.
