  • In this video, I share five things that are changing in the watch market this year, 2024. Being in the watch industry, I spent every day studying the watch market, watch prices, and the watch industry. Here I share what I see happening with hot watch brands such as Rolex, Patek, AP, as well as what is happening with demand, prices, trends and more.

    i’m a vintage watch lover, mainly divers.. but somehow the watch that gets most wrist time recently is my white dial vintage Citizen Chronomaster. It reminds me of my father’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual which I have given to my nephew as his wedding present.

    I’m not surprised with the WoS share price taking a hit: I’ve been “on the list” for a black dial OP36 for over 2 years, plus 5 months when they originally said they would put me on the list but didn’t and I’ve bought Cartier & Tudor watches from them.

    Great analysis. I can agree with everything you’ve said. It’s a buyers market now and into 2024. Maybe by end of year it will turn around. I find the watch market usually follows crypto (Bitcoin high) then watches tend to track up with that asset class. Hope you feel better.. cheers

    John thanks for the Interesting & informative video. No surprise that WOS is doing badly, their attitude and sales practices are anti-business. Always loved both sports and dress watches depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing. I love all watches from Casio to Journe and everything in between. Would love to see Patek come down, paying 2x for a Nautilus is ridiculous.

    John, welcome back, and glad you are over whatever your girlfriend gave you. Interesting commentary on the watch market. In the Rolex Washington DC area, the dealers are still playing the Pandemic Games. I have been waiting for three years for a green dial OP 41mm. The day when I walk into a Rolex AD and feel they want my business then I will change my mind on Rolex. I was in Miami and visited 4 ADs and got the supply and demand story. I don't visit Rolex ADs anymore. I rather buy from DelRay first.

    Traditional/dress watches making a comeback? Maybe?
    I love that style myself and despite a concerted effort not to buy them I still have a few.
    The problem is: If I was still working in an office this style would really resonate with me. But, I'm not! The first time I went for a bike ride with a Cartier Tank or was putting up drywall with a Reverso on I'd be questioning my sanity.
    Sport watches are the bulk of sales for a reason. That's what people can live with day to day.
    The grass is greener on the other side until you get over there and figure out why you weren't there in the first place!
    On my most recent foray into watches I made myself a promise to stay away from Dress watches, Vintage watches, and Chronographs! I've picked up one or two of each, but I've largely been successful. 😊🎉

      Hmm, I think a lot of this has to do with perception. Personally I wouldn't wear any watch going for a bike ride (that's what bike computers are for), but there's nothing inherent about what people now call a "dress watch" (which in the past was just called "a watch"), that makes it any less suitable for every day wear than a "sports watch". All watches nowadays are shock-resistant, most are waterproof, etc. Vintage ones might not be, but that goes for all vintage watches, sports ones included. Is it that we see it as more acceptable for a sports watch to get scratched up than a dress watch? Again, this is just perception - assuming we are talking about watches of the same value. I would actually argue that a slim "dress watch" has advantages over a sports watch for every day wear as it's less bulky and more comfortable, and because it sticks out less it's probably less likely to get scratched...

    • @watchchimp3102
      @watchchimp3102 5 місяців тому

      @@neil4701 I've destroyed enough "dress" watches to know they're not interchangeable with a sports watch. Non-existent water resistance is the number one issue. The cases also tend to be not nearly as robust, leather straps disintegrating from repeated exposure to water and sweat! Platings and coatings wearing away at an accelerated pace.
      You won't really realize what a big difference there is until you experience it. 😕

    • @neil4701
      @neil4701 5 місяців тому +1

      @@watchchimp3102 We may be talking about different things. What do you mean by a dress watch? I actually hate the term myself as it's used nowadays, i.e. to refer to almost any watch that isn't oversized with a chunky aesthetic and a big bezel.. But it sounds like you are talking about something more like a traditional vintage dress watch (in which case I might more or less agree with you). But nearly any high quality watch these days (even a JLC reverso) has enough water reistance to go out in the rain with and withstand momentary immersion, and if you need a fully waterproof watch there are plenty of options available that are "dress watches" by modern standards. I'm also not sure what you mean by "platings and coatings" - most good watches (vintage ones included) are solid stainless steel. As far as straps go, yes, leather straps have a relatively short life if you wear them when you're sweating a lot or getting them wet, but they are effectively consumables are relatively easy and cheap to replace, while again, many "dress watches" have bracelet options. Although I would actualy worry less wearing a watch with a leather strap if I'm doing stuff outside or DIY, as it's not doing to get scratched up and if it does get damaged it can just be swapped.
      My point is that what makes a watch robust and suitable for everyday wear has almost nothing to do with whether it has the aesthetic of a "sports watch" or a "dress watch" by modern standards. It needs to be water resistant, shock resistant, as scratch resistant as possible or easy to remove scratches from, maybe antimagnetic, etc. None of these things have anything to do with whether it's styled as a large chunky piece with a massive bezel or a smaller, slimmer watch with a more elegant aesthetic.

    • @watchchimp3102
      @watchchimp3102 5 місяців тому

      @@neil4701 Well, simply put, most "dress" watches aren't really designed as daily wear for the average active person.
      If you casually travel from home to car, to air-conditioned office, etc. You might be able to daily a dress watch.
      My first "nice" watch was a Seiko tank in the 80s. I wore it constantly did 40 mile rides regularly, go to the gym, or just the every day moisture and humidity of living in Houston. I stopped wearing it because the strap got kinda nasty and a new lizard strap was darn near as much as I paid for the watch! 😮 Then the battery died!
      I put it in a drawer and kind of forgot about it. Some time later I saw some reasonably priced straps so I went to dig it out! When I popped the back open I discovered that not only had the battery exploded, but fluid from the battery had ruined the internal components and stained the dial! Basically, a total write off.
      It wasn't till many years later that it dawned on me that the reason the thing went bad was not because of a faulty battery as I originally surmised, but because of the moisture it was repeatedly exposed to! But, beyond that the corners of the case had lost their gold plate, crystal was worn, etc.
      Now, would a contemporary dress watch hold up better? Yes, I'm sure! And I can tell you it's much easier to get a good quality replacement strap for a good price these days!
      But, the underlying ethos is still there. A nice slim elegant dress watch. Designed to slip easily under a cuff and a modern Pelagos ( or even a G-shock) are still extremely different animals.
      Could you wear an Aqua Terra as a daily one watch collection? Sure, it's dressy enough, but it's not a dress watch. Could you wear a modern "dress watch" on a bike ride? Sure, you could, but why would you? If you're a watch guy you've likely got at least half a dozen other more appropriate choices and if you do the dress watch sits in the box and rarely gets worn. Hench my original statement. 🤨

    Watches are only going to get cheaper as the economy implodes. Interest rates are only going to go up, and when you're stretched to pay the mortgage, luxury items get hammered.

  • @WestCoastAce27

    Good to see a fresh drop. And if you keep wearing that Panerai I’m going to end up buying the Sub 42mm!
    You can add GMTs to the list of Rolexes one probably won’t get the call for (unless they’re a longtime customer or have a friend at the AD). BTC is about to explode - and more election yr money printing. So I just bit the bullet and bought a mint Batman.
    Might be a slight uptick in dress watches but sports will always be #1.

      I don’t think anyone who paid over rrp is a clown. I don’t pay over rrp on principle but it also comes down to our budgets. I’m in a millionaire and I want a certain watch, why would I miss out for the sake of a thousand or two?
      I wanted a Bamford square g shock and couldn’t get one for rrp- I would gladly pay £100 extra for one as it’s still not expensive for me, other people on bigger budgets probably feel the same about OPs.
