- Despite millions of pounds of rubble cleared, a structural engineer hired by the town to determine a cause doesn't like what he sees right now.
Same issue in NY after 911, the ground continued to crack and expand beyond the site. The engineer know his business, let him do his job.

Its not about cracks in ground, genius.
Its about the missing vertical load from the builiding that stabelizes walls against horizontal forces.
Yeah, if an engineer with that much experience tells you something is wrong... you better damn well listen and do what he recommends.

I was it I an Iron worker for a number of years for Washington DC Local five. I worked on two jobs that were emergency disaster relief situations, that he was in charge of and he knows what he’s talking about. He’s was very professional and respectful to everybody around him no matter your job occupation, the kind of person you’d like to sit down and drink a beer with. I have much respect for this guy. And if he saying this they should take heed and act immediately.
4 weeks later and still waiting for the disaster.

The World Trade Center had the same issue after the 911 collapse. That bathtub was 7 stories deep and basically held back the Hudson River. This matter is not to be taken lightly.
From what I have read that is correct and Allyn Kilsteimer was present there as well to my knowledge.
Thousands of tons of gravel were dumped up against that retaining wall at WTC to help prevent it collapsing into the basement pit.
This guy was complicit in the cover up of the 9/11 controlled demolitions. He may be right, but he has zero credibility.

I looked up this Allyn Kilsheimer because I never heard of him. I thought he was just some local guy the mayor hired, but boy was I WRONG. This guy is THE premiere expert in structural engineering, with vast, VAST experience in building disasters such as the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City federal building. He's the exact best person for this job. They need to take everything this man says to heart if they want to avoid another disaster.
So this guy is the same guy that covered up the incendiary devices that bought down the World Trade Centre? Jet Fuel can't melt steel beams.

This a roundabout way of saying that the remaining walls are now acting as retaining walls.. which they are not designed to be with the roof of the parking structure gone.
They are thin as heck for sure, and have only one layer of rebar. The pool was the only structure that was correctly built.

By the looks of it lately....he's got a job for years in Surfside alone. Every day I watch the news...another building is being deemed unsafe in that area.
florida has laws that were meant to segregate that have existed since the 20s. all new buildings must make 1500% of the profit back in the first year, meaning they are forced to cut corners.

As a retired civil/forensic engineer (40+ years), unless the perimeter walls were designed as stand-alone cantilever walls, I agree with this gentleman. I’ve investigated and analyzed numerous wall collapses that occurred under similar conditions.
The news sure is making a big fuss over this little wall....this is something normally only the forman would hear about

@@dnchco3295 the footing would have to be substantially stronger and deeper to resist the bending moment from the material restrained by the wall. As part of a larger structure this was not necessary.
@@dnchco3295 also keep in mind the concern is mostly for the south tower which due to its close proximity would collapse if the wall gives in to the saturated ground surrounding the building.
My grandfather was a state civil engineer and he would say the same. Another disaster just waiting to happen if nothing is done, and properly.
Champlain south does all their maintenance.
Though, it needs to be reinforced.

If I owned the blue hotel next door, I'd be calling in structural engineers to make sure my property was safe, and lawyers to prep a bigass lawsuit just in case.

It seemed a bit overhyped in the clip, but basically the foundation wall near the roadway is no longer being supported along it's top by the rigid slab. The title of the video is a bit confusing, it made it seem like it was the sister building which is in danger of collapse but it is actually referring to the site of the condo building which already collapsed.

Ouch. Sounds very serious. I thought with the debris removed, the site was safe again. Glad they have an experienced engineer to give them advise on the dangers remaining on the site. My heart goes out to all the victims of this horrendous event.
I just got done watching videos of this guy inspecting the North tower a few hours ago. Now I see this and I don't even question this man. He knows his stuff.

This engineer gave our company a lecture on the rebuilding of the Pentagon. If he says there is a problem there is a problem and it should be addresses asap. He is one of the top structural engineers in the World let alone the US.

As an engineer who has constructed basements in the area, public officials should listen to this engineer. The wall may not be designed as a cantilevered wall (no supports or tie backs). Backfill should be placed immediately against the wall to act as a buttress on the Collins Avenue side. Alternatively, let it fill with water.
On another note, a lot a folks were claiming a sinkhole caused the collapse. No evidence of a sinkhole yet.

I keep reading the sinkhole speculation but it would have been seen by now. Some people want to keep giving the benefit of the doubt when things are served on a platter.

As a Civil Engineer, I completely agree with this man. As a Brazilian who's not used to watch this type of news, I'm shocked by the amount of drama added to the situation.

To the Surfside Captain Engineer: There needs to be proper ASTM etc testing deep in the ground moving up through the columns and foundation walls.
FACTS: The city/towns of Surfside, Miami Beach and County regional building departments weren’t concerned when 774,000,000 million lbs of new beach sand drove passed Champlain South Tower parking garage entrance road on 88th and on the West 8777 Collins Ave, NOR were they concerned when 87th Terrace was removed along with further massive shock, dynamic and static loads were placed on Champlain South Tower’s South foundation wall and decking as Champlain’s HOA allegedly complained to Surfside “these activities are causing damage to our foundations and buildings” including water intrusion into garage, side pressures on foundation walls, etc.
The foundation wall can easily be shored up with timber and Ram set steel into garage slab floor.
Keep the pumps running and install bracing.
When is Surfside Captain Engineer going to do the proper ASTM etc testing?
I'm not a structural engineer but, even I could see that there was a danger of the bathtub walls folding over. Get some bracing and brackets on those walls NOW before we have a secondary disaster on our hands.

Reporter's a drama queen
It's called an unbraced wall. I am a retired structural, and he is 100% correct. Those walls are designed for the deck to act as a brace. Without the deck, the top of the wall is not braced, and any surcharge on the roadway will cause the wall to fold over. I have done over 50 suspended slabs, and in every case the walls required to be braced at the top by the deck. They are not designed as free standing for the simple fact it costs more.
Why aren't the walls pulled down/ demolished completely? Makes no sense to me that these dangerous walls are still standing. Impossible to happen here in Germany 🇩🇪☺️
@@danielahoti4109 If you pull down the walls then you must erect a new wall to hold back the earth, roads, and other infrastructure. It is just easier for the time being to brace the walls until this mess gets sorted out. The walls are located on private land, that means strata would have to pay for it. All of the owners just lost their multi million condos, and building very expensive retaining walls is the last thing they want to do. This will become an insurance claim, a mess of lawyers will get involved for numerous parties. It will be a legal mess first, someone will purchase the property and a new building will be erected. @@petemiller519 This is a 100% accurate assessment of what the issue is, and how it is going to play out. Will probably be tied up in court for quite some time. I'm not smart enough to be an engineer, but even back in the day, doing demo jobs, we always made sure we shored up any wall that didn't have support any longer.
@@petemiller519 I agree 100%. They need either to install structural steel braces, tie-backs or fill. All expensive options if they want to open the street. Generally the demolition contractor would leave the old foundation in place and fill the site to grade, so street support, utility support, etc. would not be an issue. Then when they new building was constructed they would remove major sections of the old foundation as they construct the new foundation. This is an unusual situation with unsupported walls, etc. Just a screwed up tragic situation.

I've worked in construction for 16 years. On a typical new construction you would have strutting pipes and wailing beam holding back the excavation (depending on the size and depth of the excavation as well as on other factors.) No sane engineer would leave those boundary walls unsupported like that. A landslide could happen at any moment and those walls can't take the shear forces acting on them without proper supports from the inside. Those walls are currently acting as retaining walls but they weren't designed for that (according to what I had just heard from this gentleman).
For a "mere 12-13" story building, wouldn't steel girders and concrete be used ?
@@1953childstar Yes. Each building has its own specifications and other factors like the type of soil/ground also play a role. I worked mostly on high rise buildings in Dubai where the dug ground is mostly composed of sand and buildings are typically over-designed since labor is cheap and the weather is harsh.
Heed the very experienced engineer's warning. We don't need any more loss of life. I hope those who own other high-rise buildings are checking their buildings.

Had an open excavation like this in my home town, it did cave in and took the nearby sidewalk and a section of the street with it. The construction company had to install sheet pilings along the perimeter of the excavation to properly retain the surrounding fill.
Heed to this man's knowledge, with the many years of experience and a keen eye, I would take his advise before all Hell breaks loose , hope something gets done to avoid potential accidents or deaths

Itg is now needed because the upper support of the wall is now removed. Where the retaining wall used to have a opposite force acting on the wall top from the pool deck slab.

correct - the main floor / pool deck slab acted as a diaphragm bracing the wall at the top and the garage floor slab and footing braded the wall at the bottom, now the bottom is still braced, but the top is not. a true retaining wall in a landscape, for instance is designed without the expectation of the diaphragm bracing at the top, so other methods not included in the design of this wall are used to compensate for no bracing at the top

The entire site will continue to be dangerous because it's still subsiding. Properties and their structures on either side of this property should be constantly monitored now for movement, cracks, and/or fissures of any kind within and without the structures.

He seems to be suggesting a gigantic sinkhole swallowing everything around it after an explosion caused by pressure under, inside and alongside the wall. In other words, a concrete and steel bomb and then an unpredictable crater.😳😳😳
@@jamesrogers4674 except that the columns were all rotten, and structurally connected to the ones holding up the condo, so they pulled those down with them. According to some videos I watched that looked heavily at the blueprints etc. Or rather, I should say, this is one hypothesis.
And one reason why would have been better if the garage and pool were structurally independent of each other. It probably still would have been OK, if not for extensive water damage.
Hopefully they will able to say for certain what happened so that it won't be repeated ...

He is just talking about the basement walls not designed to be a retaining wall by themselves without the now absent floor above to prevent lateral movement at the top.
The bottom of the walls won't blow out (actually inward) because the basement slab is still intact counteracting the immense pressure pushing in on the perimeter wall. Standard construction techniques are:
First the foundation, columns and walls are poured in that order or monolithic. Then the slab is poured locking everything laterally at the base. Backfilling still can't begin though. The tops of the walls and columns are only structurally secure from side to side movement when the above slab is poured linking everything together.
Both bottom and top slabs provide compressive strength from filled earth compressing inward all the way around the building.
If the walls fell in it would only disrupt the ground 30 to 40% angle from the bottom slab to the surface depending on the characteristics of the type and conditions of the fill material.
This makes perfect sense, the walls need to be prop up before the streets can be opened. There will be a cave in.

Well that might be right, the pressure of all the dirt around it’s putting pressure on one side of the wall, when inside of the hole the wall has no support to push back or balance all that pressure from outside where the road or dirt, sand is, or might be collapsing inside and change any stability of the dirt, asphalt of the road, streets...
They should fill it with soil as he said and make a memorial park.

Unfortunately, even after this building collapsed, some people have not been awakened. In another location, there is a young mother with two young sons who hopes her building gets fixed quickly. Her inconvenience sounded more important than their lives. It is hard when a potential tragedy is lurking, to remove yourself from the building. The financial crisis is one thing, your lives is another. Sorry.
There is no financial reason that mitigates putting your self in harms way or allowing oneself to remain in harms way , if you live in one of these deteriorating buildings , get out go to a hotel , if you have no money , get out go to your local fire station and demand shelter , the local authorities , must act to shelter you , but they will do everything to not pay for it . The local Authorities should take care of the people affected by this , but they should leave the engineering to the professionals , lets remember someone at the city did sign off on these buildings knowing what they knew ...

@@KB4QAA sure if you don't mind living on hallow, most likely haunted ground. The energy around this place must be unreal. When that many people suddenly lose their lives with no warning you are left with an unbelievable amount of "trapped" energy. The spirits in the area would not know they are dead and to move on to the light. The spirits would be very confused with what is going on right now. This is one of the biggest ways that buildings and land get haunted when a tragedy suddenly takes many lives without the people knowing they were gonna die.
@@misguidedangel6550 I agree. There was an 1981 skywalk collapsed inside the now Sheraton Kansas City Hotel Crown City. People who did not know about the incident says it’s haunted. When you die unnaturally on land, it’ll become haunted (in a good way) because the soul is confused between realms.

Actually, I heard that this building was supported by pilings driven into bedrock, and so far there is no evidence that the foundation failed (it was above-ground structural elements that failed). But for you to say there is no bedrock shows ignorance beyond measure. There is always bedrock, any place on Earth. It's just a question of how deep. Supporting the foundation on pilings is how designers make use of bedrock that's too deep to reach by excavation.

It is easy to declare the walls are in danger of collapse. What is hard is who is going to pay to fix it?
It doesn't just act like a bathtub, it will also act like a boat. We know water gets under the slab and has flooded the basement several times but that is with the weight of an entire complex on top of it. If the water level gets high enough there's potential for it to start lifting the remaining slab which will further weaken the wall of the structure.
You do normally see bracing on these walls in construction or demolition... That you don't see here... How odd.
i can see his point, the ground level floor\slab\deck would have been acting as a brace against the outside retaining walls. with out that the soil it pushing in on those walls. be good to see this is handled when basements are being dugout for large skyscrappers etc.
The city needs to hire a dredger immediately to pump sand from offshore into that hole, fill it up above ground line before the neighboring buildings begin to collapse.

I'm a Mechanical engineer and saw this. This guy is stating what should be obvious to ANY ONE with basic engineering education. I'm honestly shocked that they have NOT braced these walls. Well, they (surfside city officials) obviously are more interested in appearance than safety or the tower would have never come down in the first place.

I'm curious to know a few things like: did the value of surrounding properties drop by a lot? I would imagine so. Are people trying to sell those properties and for how much less? etc etc
value is in what buyers are willing to pay, you can ask any price but the buyer must be willing to pay.
