@@oesperante.4776 Yes, I think fugue has a little bit of melancholy in it, just like a old memory from childhood, makes you happy yet left with a bit of sour feeling, and all resolved at the end.
This fugue is an absolute beauty, and you play it at a slow pace, just as it should be done. With passion and a profound understanding, I feel like if I was in peeking in the house of the Master, playing it for its large family on saturday evening. Comfort music, music for the mind, telling us that life is worth living, and that we, humans, can always find a way to improve, to elevate ourselves from the status of ignorants to become masters at the arts. @@kurisu_rpg it is not so much about speed as the clarity of the message of the music. Too often when this fugue is played very fast, that message is lost.
@@ariadne4720 Only if you have a pre-determined idea of what the message is. If you think this fugue is supposed to be grave and stately, then you favor a slow tempo. But different qualities of the music are brought out by different tempos; I find that Kimiko Ishizaka's fast tempo brings out a different side of the piece, a different message, than the equally valid slow tempo. And her interpretation, despite being quite fast, is very clear due to the confidence of her playing.
I feel that if the harpsichord had more painting on the case, or ‘papers’ on the lid, the shirt would have interfered. With the simpler, wooden case, the shirt is perfect. Well done!
As always thank you for sharing. Quick question, I'm guessing the instrument was not tuned in equal temperament, I could be wrong, but out of curiosity: what temperemant was it tuned in?
All keyboard instruments play more or less out of tune even in they're perfectly tuned to 12-tone equal temperament. All temperaments are a compromise.
@@herrickinman9303 technically speaking, you are of course correct. But listen and you can hear that this instrument sounds out of tune. it's different
Doesn’t the irony dawn on anyone that if you asked someone today what key this is, they’d respond C major? A key nowadays considered to be the simplest with no sharps, enharmonically equivalent to the baroque C sharp major which was the most ridiculously difficult key with 7 sharps!
I was just thinking about this, Although I personally think that this masterpiece sounds way more melancholic in the (current) C# region. Maybe a few cents higher (sort of in between baroque and current tuning, maybe something like 427/428Hz) could be interesting.
Letting aside the color shades of each particular tonality, one can go the simple way and play this in plain C major, where a double sharp would mean a plain sharp, a natural - a flat and so on, since the notes remain on the same staff lines. This trick also concerns other complicated enharmonic keys like Eb flat minor = E minor, D sharp minor = D minor etc. The ability to sight-read the score is required, of course :)
On a different note :-) Where can one get this type of shirts? I was sourcing those in the seventies.... And there is (was) one shop in Bern who sells them still.... :)
The description you provided is quite silly. To a musician it is useless. A musician is required to be able to play any key regardless of the fact that "no fewer than seven sharps adorn the beginning of each staff". That being said, a fantastic performance as always from the fine Netherlands Bach Society.
Am I alone in thinking that the prelude could be a gentle introduction to a beautiful but strange tonality... ie slow and expressive...? Loved the fugue though.
Wow, first of all, i applaud All of Bach for up-keeping this important treasure for us all! Today's Classical Corner... BWV 848 (Bach's Prelude & Fugue in C-sharp Maj)! Albeit very well performed, the sound is uniquely stunning, but quite harsh on the ear. Did Bach compose this for/on the piano or the harpsichord? Like the location of Kiribati, this is of course common knowledge, but for those few who don't know, the Harpsichord was invented in the late Middle Ages, and by the 1700s was supplanted by the piano, almost disappearing completely by 1800, excepting continued use in opera for accompanying recitative. #OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic #OdedTodaysClassicalCorner #Audioded
Bach most definitely did not write this on/for a piano. I think your timeline is a bit rushed. He may have had access to a pianoforte at some point but he mainly would have composed for organ, harpsichord, and probably even clavichord.
no amount of historical justification excuses the bad-sounding tuning here. it's not that my ears have been biased by equal-temperament, it's not that herr Bach wanted a certain c_sharp major je ne sais quoi spiciness. it just sounds bad

i would say the prelude is the pure happiness, but yes, the fugue is still incredible.

The great thing about this fugue is that it is so multifaceted that it could be played in a few different ways and it works.
Exactly - Bach did not specify a tempo nor leave any writings about tempo, so it's presumptuous to talk about the speed the wtc "should" be played at.
