I really liked Adam's reflections on the bus. It's all about discovering your limmits and seeing that you can do more than you thought you could. Great video, Really love what you guy's are doing!
After a demanding sail from Norfolk, VA, we docked at Farley's State Marina in Atlantic City, NJ, otherwise known as the Golden Nugget Hotel, Casino and Marina. Adam had just enough time to get the bus to NYC to catch his return flight home to North Carolina.
Drake, i so look forward to the time i get to spend following your journeys. You are a confident sailor, a gregarious soul, and someone i would be proud to call a friend. I wish you safe travels and fair weather. Jono.
Another great episode! Well done. Your rich blend of the human aspect of crew relations with the adventure of the journey makes these episodes so much anticipated. Is it Tuesday yet, again!
Hi Drake, another fabulous video of the Real Cruising Life. Some questions... Adam was awesome! Do you hire crew such as Adam? What is the pay scale approximately? I assume you pay his bus and airline tickets? I'm an airline Captain contemplating buying a sailing vessel and joining you on the seas. I'm amazed at the similarities. I've flown to London, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Sao Paulo, Dubai, Singapore, Beijing, etc. Some similarities are use of watch/break schedules, use of radar to avoid collisions, navigation, use of autopilot, weather considerations, and constant communications via VHF or HF or ACARS or SATCOM. Thoroughly enjoy your channel and informative well produced videos!
+dbc7772011 Hi dbc. Interesting to think of the similarities between flying and sailing. :) I have never been paid to crew on a boat or paid someone to help us sail Paragon. Every situation is unique, but in my experience usually all onboard expenses have been paid for by the boat owner/captain (food aboard, fuel, boat maintenance, docking fees, etc.) and no on shore expenses have been included (restaurants, pubs, museums, on shore transportation, etc.) Most times I have provided my own transportation expenses to and from the boat.
@@drakeParagon Hi Drake, sometimes I re-visit these videos from tha past, they make me feel warm n cozy inside. I have a question, When do you plan to go back to the States in Paragon? And what is Adam up to these days?
wow.. Drake and Monique..You've really got me hooked on your adventures with Paragon..One of the biggest intrigues for me are these Marinas you pull into. They seem as barren as the Vessels tied into them. What a wonderful gift of experience and mate-ship you both gave to Adam. Looking forward to your next installment..Hazza. Australia
Drake, your videos make it all so real for those of us who are landlocked at the moment. Always learn so much from watching. Smell the fried foods, I hate docking. Bradley's law: "The amount of embarassment and difficulty you will encounter docking is directly proportionate to the number of people watching!"
you know i have noticed that when i hove two i don't keep a watch like i should as well and that is a good point Mo brought up and i racked my brain over that to see if i could come up with a better answer than you had but i cant. i guess we all do that. i watched Cruising Lealea when they crossed the pacific and had to hove two and they did the same thing.i was running it more like a anchor watch. but this is a bad habit and i will run a watch when hove two from now on thanks Mo for that very good point you had. no matter how long you have been sailing if you stop learning you need to stop sailing. this is the reason i watch channels like yours. keep up the great videos Drake they keep getting better and better.
It might not be required but i thank it's a good idea and sounds like mo dose as well you might not be under way but that Don't mean some one won't come along and run you over
Sorry drake, little chatty today but I wanted to ask are you going to make Videos of handling the sails. I love the repair videos but I was wondering if you are you to do some show and tell videos on boat handling and how you do things to be safe, navigation etc..?
Hi 1962moe, Thank you. We have countless hours of video of our 7 months of sailing from North Carolina to Iceland via Canada and Greenland. We've got all kind of stuff coming up. :) When it comes to the sailing footage, I think I do often break into explaining what we're doing, how, and why... But with the vast majority of our filming we weren't really trying to be instructional. Every day we tried to just film *everything* that happened. Now I'm trying to weave all that footage into episodes that try to tell stories. We're thrilled that people are enjoying the story so far. Thank you for sailing with us. And I haven't forgotten your idea about the mugs! Working on that. :)
Hi Drake have I haven't posted in a while lol. Like always your videos are the best on youtube for the cruising life style ! I really hope Mo gets over her sea sickness I almost and simpathy sea sickness for her on this video Ugh ! God bless you guys and Clears skies and fair winds !!
Drake. You asked us in a video back about what we would like to see and I would also like to see how your boat handles being hove to. I know during the process you might might be able to film it, but after your set up and safe it would be interesting to see before and during having to.
Ah how I did laugh to hear you say you hate docking! I laughed because I share your hatred! I started my skipper life two years ago as a lowly and very novice Day Skipper. Coming and going from marinas made my heart rate go to about 300 bpm! Terrifying. I'm (slightly) more experienced now and still find it nerve wracking. Glad I'm not alone in this...
I enjoyed the drunken daze lens-flared tour of the Nugget casino. It made it seem as though you were going to wake up the next day in the roof. Did you ever get the fresh water running for 80+ a night?
Hi Evan, We all slept really well that night. No water... :( It was too early in the season. They were keeping the water hoses off over the winter to prevent them from freezing.
Seems like a rough one to me, I know it's all a year behind you and Monique now but it's all still ahead for us! Already a few shakedowns and not even yet far offshore. I agree with many of the other commenters in that Monique is a true keeper! Anyone who can go through that and come out on the other side smiling is one in a billion :)
Nice video. I seem to remember a video Adam did on single handing his boat to New York sometime this past year. It was also good. Is he a doctor? He mentioned a three year residency in NY so I assumed so. Good crew.
Hi JohnKearney, Adam also made a couple more wonderful videos of his family sailing trip in Long Island south. They are on is channel 'TheCapeDory' which is liked to under my 'Favorite Channels' list on the main page. Adam is a dentist.
This is my home port. They dredged the entrance into St george's cove there, my favorite anchorage. 10 feet at dead low if you are ever back in AC! plus i know guys who have spent weeks at farley's without anyone even knowing they were there lol
Such great videos. Personally? I'd love to know how you finance / pay for the lifestyle. I can't seem to figure out how to keep my Hobie 16 in the water. But loving the vids...
Must admit to a smirk at 13:01. Recalled Adam saying something about not approaching a dock faster than you want to hit it.... Looks like the captain of the gin palace had a 'little old lady' moment and hit the gas instead of the brakes. Must have been doing several knots to make that mess? I guess there'll be a surcharge...... ;)
Hi YaniT991, Not 100% sure, but I'm guessing that that damage may have happened while the boat may have been tied up there during Hurricane Sandy. So much of the east coast was in such awful ruin after Sandy.
Nice adventure. If Adam is going to post his own sailing videos, I'd be interested in following him too, if you have a link to share. Looks like he was in the military (looking at his jacket with the velcro) so it's understandable how he works the shift for the off-watch to get out of the cockpit and get some rest. Nice to meet him through your videos, Drake. ~Daniel
Hi Daniel, Thanks, Yes, Adam has some great UA-cam sailing videos on his channel called 'TheCapedory. He has a Cape Dory 30 sailboat.' There's a link to his channel on the right of my main channel page under 'Featured Channels'. You might recognize his channel icon too! :) Adam was in the army and I talk about this a little in the next episode. It would be an honor and a privilege to sail with him again someday. Happy sailing, Drake
Wow, interesting video. I don't mean this in a neg. way but nothing seemed to be good about N.J. Big, over-crowded, over priced, noisy and dirty. Having a drink seaside there is nothing like having a drink seaside in the islands. Now I am really wondering what N.Y. is going to be like. But still... another great video! Thanks.
Adam is such a sweet, level-headed and thoughtful guy. The perfect crew, he'll be missed indeed. Drake on the other hand.....kidding, but be nicer to Mo please! Good long video but perhaps a little less minutiae and more technical stuff. Would have been interesting to see some of the hove to experience. The scary stuff rules!
Please stay tuned for more of the video series: "DrakeParagon Presentation at the Pasquotank River Yacht Club - How do you afford the cruising lifestyle" where I talk about this for a bit.
Mo doesn't appear to enjoy sailing all that much. Looks like she's an ICW/fair weather sailor. Doesn't that whining and constant sickness get on your nerves?
If you’re going to continue to comment on videos on this channel then we expect you to be polite, courteous and respectful. Then we will be the same towards you. Imagine that instead of being anonymous, you’ve been invited aboard our boat and are talking to us face to face.
Thanks, Drake, for increasing the footage.
Mo's a real trooper- come out of that with a smile and laugh... cheers to her!
I really liked Adam's reflections on the bus. It's all about discovering your limmits and seeing that you can do more than you thought you could. Great video, Really love what you guy's are doing!
Excellent job on this video guys. The music you scored really helped tell a story. One of my favorite episodes.

Great sailing Video's.
Wonderful video Drake!!! So awesome to take this cruise with you and Mo!! Thanks for allowing us all to travel with you!!!!!....
Another great episode! Well done. Your rich blend of the human aspect of crew relations with the adventure of the journey makes these episodes so much anticipated. Is it Tuesday yet, again!
Oh also Many Kudos to Adam he was Awesome !! I hope that you have more crew like him on board Paragon !!
He will be back. :)
Safe travels Adam
I really enjoyed the info on the modifications you did down below. Looking forward to a cabin tour video - hopefully soon.
Was the golden Nugget marina afraid of the water line's freezing?
Hi Dale, yes.
Another wonderful instalment! Love your candid approach - really feeling immersed in your adventure. Greetings & best wishes from Melbourne Australia
Ahoy Niall! Many thanks. We dream of sailing around Australia.. Someday we will!

Adam is cool.
Keep 'em coming Buddy. Stay sharp Folks.
What a great guy! You made a friend for life.
Very nice videos. Love them. Adam is so cool. I'll miss him now.
Adam is such a great soul.
Gabrul Dooh He is! We're looking forward to sailing with him very soon! :)

Mo is really a trooper, has she stopped being seasick always now? I hear most people do.

IMO regs do not require a watch when the vessel is not under power unless it is inside a marked shipping channel.
Hove to. Not two. Sorry. I agree with your comments completely.
It might not be required but i thank it's a good idea and sounds like mo dose as well you might not be under way but that Don't mean some one won't come along and run you over
spencer marshall Not sure the IRPCS agree with that but regulations won't save you from being hit!
Sorry about the spelling

I like her comment " so were more willing to get hit!" classic
I saw most of the last part of this video in another episode.

Can you do a post on your (AIS) System?
Hove to closing speeds are less. My guess.
Has Mo ever tried Dramamine before it gets to bad for her to keep down?

DrakeParagon's The Real Cruising Life Thanks for sharing, going to subscribe to Adam right now!! :-)
Your vids make me smile a lot. Thanks much for that. I especially dug the musical interlude on that one. Fair winds, hope to see ya out there.
you should report a vessel that's estimated over 300 tons if its not transmitting an AIS transmission.
