Hotpoint Washing Machine Woes

- Yet another filler video that isn't siren-related. Again, I apologize for that. I must also apologize for my ranting and raving in this one.
One thing I like to do on UA-cam is watch random videos of varying subjects. Lately, I've been watching videos of old washing machines (I'm fascinated by the mechanical aspect of them, just like with sirens). A common sentiment mentioned in a lot of the washing machine videos I've seen are how they don't make them as good as they used to. Well...I agree. This served to remind me of the new Hotpoint (GE) washing machine I recently bought, and the problem I've been having with it...and just the overall cheap build quality that astounds me.
Anyway, I bought this Hotpoint earlier this year to replace a 20 year old Kenmore 80 Series that was malfunctioning (It wouldn't wait until the water was drained before starting the spin cycle). This video basically just demonstrates the problem I've been having with the new machine ever since the very day I got it. Namely...it will not fill with hot water, even if the temperature knob is set to "Hot". It will only fill with cold or warm water. Although I normally leave the temperature set to "Warm" and therefore this problem really doesn't affect me anyway, just the fact that it is a new washer, only a few months old, and it has had this problem since day one...it's enough to make me rant against the cheapness of today's appliances and other equipment.
I really want my old Kenmore 80 back. Even with the problem it had, it was still a better washer than this Hotpoint, not just in build but also simply the number of features it had compared to the new machine. Had I started watching all those washer videos earlier in the year, I would have been better informed to get the Kenmore repaired rather than replace it with this...thing, which has technically already been broken since day one, and I anticipate will be completely dead within five years.
Luckily, I was able to get it repaired under warranty (Turned out the mixing valve was bad), so now it's working properly and I didn't have to pay any repair fees for it. But still...I agree they don't make stuff as good as they used to...and I still want my old Kenmore back.
For all the recent comments on here. People, this video was uploaded in 2010, almost 9 years ago at the time of this comment. In that year, washers still filled all the way up. This video used to have annotations on here, but UA-cam since got rid of them. Important things he pointed out was that his Kenmore was replaced because it stopped neutral draining. In regards to the water problem. It was revealed that the machine's water valve was bad, and he got it replaced under warranty. After that, he got full hot water each time. So, it was fixed afterwards.
Sharkie626 oh hello you
My dad bought a Hotpoint washer w/limited features and plastic tub, 20 years ago, just like this one. I hated it and thought it was junk, but it always ran and cleaned the laundry real well. I replaced the garden hoses that ran to the washer, the agitator and connector hub about 8 years ago. The other day, the drive shaft for the agitator broke (+$375 part), so not bad for 20 years. Going washer shopping.
You could've shut off the cold instead @4:20, and had 113 degrees, but with plastic tub and parts may warp or wear out sooner.
Your washer is not malfunctioning, it is temperature regulated. There is a temperature sensor that all newer washers have that controls the water temperature. This is thanks to government regulations that they say conserve energy.
I have the same issues as you stated plus what others posted.
Washer is a POS....hot was does NOT get hot...more like *warm*
Washer does not fill all the way on wash, maybe 3/4.
Washer does not fill past 1/4 to 1/3 on rinse and I frequently have to rewash many loads. I have to hold the size knob between load sizes to fill the wash cycle properly but the rinse will not allow that.
I hate it, it sucks a big one.
Plus, I have to rearrange the clothes and spin again because it doesn't spin the clothes very well and they are soaking wet sometimes.
I believe I have found a fix for the hot and cold water problem by opening the top panel and disconnecting the warm (white) connector to the center solenoid. I did find that with this washer that it is best to run a second rinse after the cycle is done. One major issue with this Hotpoint is that it does not spin between the main wash cycle and the rinse cycle. But yes, I agree that this washer is complete junk as you shouldn't have to do any of this. Your clothes should be clean after the 1 complete cycle.
Speed Queen still makes them like they used to. I bought one last year and its commercial grade and made like the old 1970's Maytags inside
That’s just how they control water temperature on the cheaper models. They always blend a little cold water in at a specific rate
The temperature is limited on purpose to avoid disturbing the cheap plastic components like the agitator and the
I work on appliances for a living. I personally have the traditional Kenmore machines. Best machines ever made. I absolutely hate working hotpoint/ ge/ Frigidaire machines. I scrap more of these than I fix because they are complete crap and are more labor intensive than whirlpool/ Kenmore designs. Although all newer model machines (vertical modular rotation) all have a similar design and have dreaded computer boards and tub bearings that you will learn to hate. I'll keep repairing my Kenmore till the world runs out of parts.
You and me both my brother! Kenmore has proven to me to be the absolute best! My Kenmore finally died after 24 years. I know it needs a new timer switch, possibly a clutch and a new transmission. Other than that, everything works fine. I did find an appliance exchange place near me that had another Kenmore 90 Series washer where mine is an 80 Series for $150. That price is actually cheaper than buying the parts for my old washer. Too bad the timer switch in the 90 Series isn't the same because all the other parts are compatible between the two as I would love to fix up my old one again. Maybe if I turn it in to the exchange place it would be cheaper for me to buy it back after they fix it than it would be for me to repair it myself. :)
@@kato223 if the switches are the same, I've swapped the whole headshell so the marks line up. Just a thought.
@@TheMoose1982 Unfortunately, they're not. The 90 Series has extra wires running to it for pulse controls as well as an automatic second rinse option. The cheapest timer switch I can find for my 80 Series that is $132 from Sears Parts Direct that could possibly get me the part the quickest. I wish someone would come up with an Appliance Tear Apart place like they do for cars. :)
@@kato223 if you really want to cannibalize one, use the wiring harness and the new headshell.
@@TheMoose1982 that's actually not a bad idea. Sucks that my old one is white and the newer one is beige. But I think I can make this work. Maybe I'll look and see if I can find a white head shell, then I can really make this work! I like your train of thought here! 😎
You made the same mistake that I did. We had an early 1980's GE filter-flo washer. I grew up with that design from GE, it was a workhorse, and it NEVER needed a repairman. The transmission went out of it, after about 20 years of use on it. I let my dad haul it to the scrap yard and now we have a 2008 GE that has issues already, too. It's already pumped water out all over the floor twice.
I wish we had the old GE filter-flo washer back, now. None of this new stuff is built to last, it's junk.
This is my exact washer and it is less than two years old. The agitator and plastic piece underneath the washer has been replaced and broke again. The repairman looked at my washer and now, everything underneath is broken, bolts, washers, block, etc. and I can't afford to buy a new washer. I paid over 600. for this washer and expected a life span of more than 2 years!
@dixdisf I had considered that. I also thought perhaps it was a safety feature to prevent scalding while the lid was open. However, according to the store I bought it from (which also repairs washers and other appliances), it's not supposed to be doing this, so it is a genuine malfunction in this case.
Another thing I always wondered about most washers is why the holes are placed in a diagonal (Polka-dot style) direction, versus why a few are like that up-and-down (grid). Were a few washers from the early 1980s or so fitted with square tubs, ones that do not even turn? The agitator did though. Prior to the spin cycle, the agitator turned back and forth twice and that was it. Those ones (even the dryer) had a fluorescent light atop. Rare.
I have the ge version of the washer and it rocks
I actually have one of these washers (Hotpoint), but I use it as a backup. I just ordered a new water inlet valve for it as the old one was not letting through very much hot water at all. Through my troubleshooting I found that you really only need 2 of the three solenoids hooked up. I bet you could replace the triple solenoid inlet valve with a double and not hook up the middle (warm / white) connection. I disconnected the warm on mine and then the hot went full hot for me. Warm seemed good too and the cold was getting way cold. So, only the hot (red) and cold (blue) were connected. I haven't got my new valve yet to fully test that out and I also went back to an older Kenmore washer by getting one from an Appliance Exchange place near me.
Pardon me Im having the same issue with my washing machine, and I was wondering if you were successful with yours? I was reading what you wrote and wanted to try it myself
@@Morisco853 Try just disconnecting the white connector to the solenoid. That seemed to work for me just fine. I have not had a chance to test if the new inlet valve worked or not. But on the older inlet valve it was getting all 3 temps with only the red and blue connected.
@@kato223 your talking about on the water valve correct?
@@Morisco853 Yes, when opening the top of the washer there you will see where the hoses attach. There are 3 connectors going to the water valve there, red, blue and white. The only ones needed are the red and blue.
New Machine - Set on Heavy. Same issue as you, with tepid water when set on HOT - 96 degrees. Also, precarious open lid fell down and hit my nose, bumped my glasses into washer. NO agitation, just whirrs. DID a kinda half-effort of agitation 9-11 times, that's all. No buzzer when load is done. Hunk of junk! NOT like it used to be! I could wash more efficiently in the laundry tub! Yes it saves energy because I just HATE to do laundry now. I'm scared to try to wash my large items, like quilts.
Seriously, buy a Speed Queen, I did and its been EXCELLENT.
The Chinese manufacture to the exact specifications required by the contractor. If GE designs and orders junk, that's what they will produce.
If you want a washer like your old one, just go to Craigslist and buy one while they are still available.
Hey man I hope you're okay you sound kind of rough like you're gasping for breath maybe you should get one of those portable oxygen bottles appreciate your video
Some washers if u select hot it will still put a tiny bit of cold water in it
This washer is working as designed. The Dept.of Energy specifies that to be energy certified, the water can be no hotter than 100 or so degrees. The washer has a temp sensor to control this, and does so be mixing cold water with the hot. This supposedly saves energy by not using so much water. I ran into this issue with my new kenmore made by Whirlpool. After some research, i found out how to modify my washer for tap hot water. In my case, I had to cut one wire, and tape it. I am sure that your machine can bemodified as well. Any qualified tech should be able to tell you how to do this. Your only other option would be to buy a non-energy certified washer, and there are very few left. The best one I am aware of is Speed Queen, which is what my next unit will be... I understand your frustration...
I don't think your getting the point of no hook ups or space in the apartment
Sorry wrong thread
That is my whole point - EPA is out there, "working" for us. But now I have to wash 2 times, and I've had to detour their system, in order to get clean clothing. We were cheated! I wonder if EPA uses this machine? Do they garden, dig ditches, have children, or babies, or do they farm, or service machinery? Probably not - just sit in offices. My washing day consists of a LOT of energy on my part, making up for EPA/ or Hot Point inefficiencies.
What if the load size knob completely snaps off and I cant get whats left inside out
My guess is that the plastic temp contol valve that the hoses connect to is malfunctioning. Not a super expensive part and a relatively easy repair
My dad bought one, its horrible. Its loud and it always gets unbalanced when you try to wash bulky items like blankets or washers. Theres a reason why its the cheapest thing out there
Speed Queen commercial washer is the only answer to a good old school type machine. I bought one and its been excellent. Best product of any kind ive bought in years.
How do I remove the front panel on the machine has a leak on the bottom
if your thinking of replacing your washer, i strongly reccomend miele! they are a bit pricey but last atleast 15 years a time its totally worth it
ilovemiele1 ive never seen a meile in the US
I totally Hate my Hot Point washer. It’s so noisy and not enough settings to choose from. Really bad choice on my part!!!
I too have a Hotpoint washer and question how it can clean with so little water? The only thing I can figure out is it does not agitate side to side like washers used to, it agitates by rolling the clothes inward. They all seem to be made that way nowadays. My mom's washer is a different brand and hers does the same thing. I think if I had a valid complaint about my Hotpoint, it doesn't matter what we do to it, it chronically spins out seemingly unlevel for a very noisy spin cycle, and the irony is it supposedly is a quiet version of this washer.
Wish I had seen this before I bought a Hotpoint... only to find out that it does not actually get Hot during the hot cycle!! It is a real problem for me and I will have to return this washer for one that actually works this time... the company I bought it from called me back to tell me that Hotpoint says the Hot cycle will not be more than 90 degrees... mine does'nt even get to 90 ugh! Buyer beware these days!!
I just bought this same washer. on the cycle where you put the softener it doesn't fill up all the way! Is this supposed to happened?
@blaine1764 if you tip the washer over on it's side you'll see access to water pump Washers don't usually have a panel on the bottom. The pump will have 2 hoses going to it and a V belt around a pulley If your lucky it's just a loose or broken belt. If not, the pump is shot. and a used Appliance places should have a used one $15 -$20...or new $90-120.. Belts $30
This washer looks like a GE profile washer
Hotpoint, HTWP1400F2WW - First, the lid fell down across my nose, glasses fell into machine. No way to hold it open - dangerous to small fingers. Takes a LONG time to fill. Does not agitate, it slowly sloshes. Old ones moved approx. 240/min. This one is 60/min. At one point is sloshes slightly faster for 9 to 11 movements. No hot water, despite what dial says.. Temp. of HOT is 92-94 degrees. "Warm" is totally cold. Doubtful if the "agitator" even moves - cannot tell. Dial terrible, no incremental clicks to tell where it should be. During rinse, it drains well but when the water is almost gone, it starts sloshes! What it does to my clothing is unknown when there is so little water in tub. Clothes are not clean. Sheets, towels, underwear not fresh smelling. My solution. I fill the tank with hot water from adjoining sink. I manually agitate with a plunger for 5-8 minutes. Spins good. Cute, huh? This machine still makes me crazy angry -- I did not expect a deliberate cheat by Hotpoint/GE . For various reasons, I have to put up with it. So sorry I bought it!
Yeah I hear ya, I think I have the same exact one and it's a piece of _ _ _ t ! Me and my husband tried to get another one today on our Lowe's card and they freaking chopped our limit to $75, I was soooo pissed off. So now we're stuck with a crap washer that's not working. We had it from Aug last year till Aug of this year, a tad over a year and nothing but problems with it. My daughter and stepson got it for us for Christmas last year, which was really nice but I'll know next time not to get this brand again. We were going to purchase a maytag but I saw on here those are junk too so. Maybe we'll one day get a whirlpool or Kenmore. Good luck !
All your Kenmore 80 series washer needed was a new clutch, $20 part.
How typical of a Junkpoint. They come pre broke so you don't even have to break them yourself.
LOL
I just purchased a hot point used how ever the water level doesn't get high, now it is making a sound like someone is saying I can even hear it up the stairs what can I do, I need help it was purchased in February 10, 2006 now it is August of2016. thanks for your help
GE has decided what you want
I watch a lot of random videos too, how I found this. Anyway...
My mom had to buy a Maytag washer (made by Whirlpool?) more than five years ago, which seems fine, but nothing like the Maytag from 1979 or so that ran very well, until the spin cycle no longer functioned due to rusty sensor, or something relating to the knob inside?
Where I live are front-load Frigidaire, not top-loading. It has worked fine for five years. If something goes wrong I do not need to worry about it because they are included in the apartment, where the resident is not the owner. A maintenance worker would fix it for you.
I'm here to bitch about the Hotpoint Washing Machine that is in my new apt downstairs. It sucks. No wonder it's free.
I have a GE HydroWave and it is set set on hot and I turned hot off no cold water will come through.
Just thank god you didn't buy any junkie belt drive washers, it's one of those washers with the lid locks in them which are awful. There are some direct drive washers that you can buy online but they are used washers, also don't forget about speed queen; that is another great appliance company and they don't have those lid locks.
This is not a good washing machine. Even at the heavy setting, the water only fills-up HALF way. Also, the agitator is VERY SLOW. I don't even know why they bother making this crap!! Not a heavy-duty washing machine. Go with a MAYTAG instead -- never had problems with a Maytag, ever.
I was watching the video because on the rinse cycle mine only fills one quarter of the way. I have the same temp issues. Wish I would have purchased different.
There is nothing wrong with the agitation being slow if the arc is long, which it is. That is much better for your clothes. High speed narrow arc agitation damages them (e.g. vintage 1980's Kenmores)
@ToonieMama . It does that on the rinse cycles( low water level). Totally retarded. And it is sad, because otherwise it would be a great machine or passable. Yes the agitation is slow, but it is a long arc, really moves those clothes around.... A sort-of super roto-swirl
My doesn’t power rinse and it leaks from the top. Very angry
I will complain that the wash cycle sucks it is so slow that the clothes do not get clean. the power saver is stupid when you have to wash everything at least twice and it still does not clean the clothes. The amount/level of water is stupid too you can't was a large load. I want my old washer back.
i have this machine it is great
I have that exact same hotpoint washer and everything seems to work ok but when it hits the spin cycle it wont stop spinning. it just stays and stays and stays in that same spot spinning. Water is pumped out.......... Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.......
very similar and not familiar with the model..but I thought the drum rods were broke..they were not...and yeah it jumped that base bracket walked and bashed the wall lol. I have no idea how...that floor isn't that bad...but did level it...that is a wierderr motor too...you know I have no idea bushing in there what..rods loser something but yeah its a roarerr shaker now lol.
I hear all these dumb comments on here but hot does mean hot not cold! No it's not supposed to let cold water through you are correct! And not blaming the manufacturer? Yes and no the stringent water standards for "conserving" water are assinign and stupid we live in a water world. Also tge government should have no business in regulating anything they've been given too much power.
Hey man, going by your video description, the problem with your Kenmore is that the neutral pak in the transmission probably failed. It's too bad it wasn't saved.
Wash machines are designed, along with most every water running device now a days, with anti-scald tech or devices, if need be turn up your tank temp
i was going to replace the pump on my old hotpoint washing machine but there was no back panel to remove. not too sure how to access the pump without taking apart the entire machine...any help would be appreciated. p.s. im new to f.i.y.
We don't want to met the plastic hookups now do we?
It will not use straight hot water. The new laundry detergents do not use sulfates. They use enzymes. Too hot of water will render the detergent less effective. Also the EPA was making the companies cut down on shipping weight for fuel and emissions and environmental bs. Not completely the manufacturers fault. Washer working fine. Detergent and methods are different. Read the manual.
How do you know the cold water isn’t intentional? Did you call GE to find out? If you wanted more bells & whistles why did you buy the cheap bottom of the line unit? Your complaints aren’t even founded.
I have a GE washer that I bought in October 2014. It is now late December 2014. The agitator fins are so flimsy they are breaking off. I am sorry I bought it. I wish I could get my money back. It is a piece of garbage.
In Europe I bought a Hotpoint front loading machine that looks more modern than this pile of old junk and that was 25 years ago. When will Americans start rejecting this rubbish, it is still made the way things used to be and its design is still from the 1950's. I dare you look up google UK At what I have WMYL8352 for around 300GBP electronic controls 1200 spin speed, come on USA get with the 21st C for god sake. And remember most public Laundry places ARE FRONT LOADING.
i have a hot point washer thats almost like this and it used to rip my clothes until all the paddle broke off the agitator and now it wont get anything clean because the paddles are gone. i have to reach inside and swish the clothes around to get any movement. worst washer ever made and i think they made it bad on purpose so we would buy a new front load leaky washer.
Looking for information on Hotpoint washer HTWP 1000 M1WW.
Anyone have any idea on how old this model is? Can not find anything about it in Google search ...
Replace the water inlet valve or temperature switch and you should be good
I bought one of these too, and it rips my clothes, I hate it with a passion.
My doing the same thing plus it makes a loud noises
I need help guys. I purchased a house and it came with these Hotpoint Washer and Dryer. Both brand new, unopened in boxes. Dryes works perfeclty, but the weasher makes a crazy noise in its cycle. It feels like the circular thing is hitting the interior wall of the washer. When you move the thing inside, it sounds as if I am moving a rusty part somewhere in there. Its that grindy sound. Can someone help please?
My Hotpoint top loading washing machine has been working perfectly for six years. Today it started making a loud knocking noise on the left side (toward the top) during the wash cycle. The noise would start and stop even through the draining process. Could this be the springs? Further, I have never used the option for adding (something) to the rinse cycle. Heard that this can make the machine have many problems. In addition, I wait ten minutes between washes and, leave the lid up for at least 24 hours when I am done. I realize the Hotpoint is not the most expensive model but I paid $400.00. This model is one of those "whisper" models and yes, it is very quiet. And again, it has worked perfectly until now. Please, I need some advice.
I own a Hotpoint washer and if you ask me, they're junk. Plain and simple. My daughter and stepson bought it for the hubby and I and it's understandable that they clearly couldn't buy a nice one so they got what they could afford but we've only had the washer for literally, last month from Aug of last year has been a tad over a year. We've had problems with it left and right not long aft we got it. Now it doesn't work period, the fill or spin light comes on and that's it. So it's either the pump is damaged or the sensor thingy where the lid to the washer goes down on is broken. I guess this guy on utube said when the lid is put down too fast it will break a little pin that's in the sensor. I'm really hoping it's only the sensor bcse we tried to buy a new maytag washer with our lowes card but bcse we hadn't used it in a while they chopped our limit in half and that really hurt us so now we're out of a washer, which really sucks. I would get a diff washer if I were you but it's also your decision and I really can't tell you what and what not to buy. Good luck and I hope you have a lot better luck than we did.
It's not broke. That is how they are now made. These type of washers all now mix the hot water with the cold water. why I don't know. It's just what they do now.
Me again - I plan on filling a bucket with HOT water from the laundry sink, pouring the hot water into the machine, and washing clothes with hotter water than "allowed" by EPA, etc. Handy, huh? Might burn myself, will definitely drip water all over floor, may slip and fall, but yes, that will solve the problem of the temp. sensor. ?? I wonder if any of the EPA folks actually wash clothes?
I hope you can buy a Speed Queen Transmission Drive Washer. Otherwise just buy a used Whirlpool Direct Drive or Newton Built Maytag Washer.
Nah we got the same one..😅
Hotpoint company were founded by GE in 1910
The Laundry Centre , yes but they sold their appliance division to HAIER
What is the model number for this washer???
thanks for the video
can you upload the video for during washing clothes?
Blame your Federal Government. in 2007 if I recall your Government pass a water conservation law to force all washer manufacturers to implement this law. now you can get not a full water level, water mix with dirty water for rinse and a mixture of hot and cold water in the Hot setting.
why the hell they didn't have the rod/bolt man at the bottom?...don't give a shit but idk...I don't load that damn thing much..can't believe it jumped that shit lol...I never heard it doing that shit before.
People whatever you do, don't buy these G.E. washers. I just moved into a place that has a very similar washer to what this guy is showing here. Some have a pet peeve about the misleading water temperature settings, however that's not the real issue with these crappy machines
The problem with this machine and similar models is that no matter what water level you set the wash water to be, the machine will always fill to the lowest level to rinse! What the frack? Also between the wash and rinse cycles, THERE ARE NO SPINS! Again. What the frack? There is no second rinse option, depending on what model you get and no fabric softener dispenser.
I can't believe the nonsense that's going with USA clothes washer distribution these days. Yeah, vintage is definitely better. We did not have to worry about this nonsense.
The washer manufacturing industry is taking advantage of the fact most people don't pay attention at all to the cycle sequences of their washers. Well I do, and I don't like this nonsense one bit. They claim it's because of the EPA. Hmm, really? How does that justify making a center post agitator washer that doesn't rinse your clothes? Just make wash plate washers or front loaders that don't require the huge amount of water to do the job right
Clean the dryer off
Your water control valve is bad or has something in it.
Also whether you pay 699$ or 299$ you could at least expect hot water
check your screen on the back. bet it's filled with rust. mine was but it was the cold water.
This washer had a senser date limit the water temperature you can remove it to have control again on your hit level
?
Hey I have the same issue he's having with his washer how do I remove the sensor your talking about?
The water level on mine is pitiful.
Does anyone realise that washing clothes at higher temperatures also damages clothes? The machine lets in cold water to stop damage
wearing the clothes damages them much more than hot water
So what if the washer isn't going to do what the user tells it to do, what's the point of having water temperature settings at all? IF someone wants hot water, in the tub, they want hot water! Not lukewarm, not cold, but hot.
Listen here "genius". Hot water is required to make warm or tepid water. So STFU.
LOL i have that water heater too
R u makin coffee or washin cloths?
This is normal for new washers its part of energy saving mandates from government cold water is injected to use less hot water
SPEED QUEEN!
Not anymore. The 2018 models are shit
Get a Speed Queen
Just shut off the cold water valve
really ???? you get what you paid for don't expect a $299 dollar washer to do miracles
hotpoint is made by indisit, the problems we have with it in uk unreal!!!!!!!!!!
GE dryer
Normal for years to have this type of temperature. Temperature set by the government. Too hot of water will set stains and make your clothes worst. All detergents wash better in warm or cold water now.
Is this Grant?
It did't work😞😤
Go smoke some more cigarettes
the washing machine is piece of shit, Hot water warm, or cold, the Hotpoint is dirty, and old!
:/
your water line are switched
