  • Daniel headed south for 2 weeks of filming and exploring in the South Island - sadly COVID-19 had other ideas and forced an early retreat. Even still, he managed to get down through some amazing spots - Rainbow Road, Molesworth Station, Lees Valley and the Macaulay Valley!

I’ve watched this video several times over the last year. We’re planning much of this route for April 2024. Just a shout out of thanks for taking the time to make such great videos and sharing the experience. We really do live in a beautiful country.

Cheers! That trip was amazing - even if it got cut a little short. Really want to go re-do these tracks, they're amazing

Thanks for these videos,I'd never heard of these roads. Went through Rainbow road to Hanmer Springs on the 18th this month, the road had just reopened a few hours earlier. The fee has gone up to $60. Awesome drive. Had been over to Turimawiwi Dunes earlier in the week but was advised not to try and cross the river to go further south.Absolutely beautiful area all the way down from Pakarau through Whanganui inlet to Turimawiwi.

I have ridden (yes ridden) the Rainbow as part of the rainbow rage race, once my seat "broke" Lees valley as a boy from Nth Canterbury I have been into Lees Valley from the Ashley end and once from the Okuku end, I have never gone all the way through, but i have walked out from the okuku crossing and out to the inland road tramping, thanks for sharing

Hopefully I can get back down there this winter and finish what I start, even if it's a tad less summer-y! It's amazing eh - I turned off the engine and just sat there for a few minutes taking it all in

I agree with you on Lee's valley it's just a long shingle rd with one decent water crossing easily done in a car in a dry summer, the Macauley is worth the drive but it is horrifically bumpy I did my first trip in at 1am and lost the track a couple of times but it was an adventure and that's what it's all about! Great filming and editing mate can't wait to see the rest when you get a chance to get down,

It really is eh - wasn’t bad, just wasn’t what I was hoping for. And so many gates! I really wanna’ get up to the hut there - everyone rates it highly. Oh wow - that’s crazy - would be super different in the dark... very true, it is indeed! Cheers Scott! Can’t wait to get back down there and finish this project!

You would learn a few good lessons on producing a back road videos from Geoff Mackley. Suggest you have a look at at couple of his videos. Particularly through the Rainbow and the Moleworth roads. Found your videos somewhat disjointed and lacking some important details.

Cheers for the comment mate. I've seen his videos - very different style/approach, not quite what I'm going for with the videos I do. This series was a tad tricky with lockdowns and a few things - but goal was to show some cool spots to visit in the South Island.

Fabulous viewing. I really hope one day to do the Rainbow Road even if it means finding someone to tag along with. With my poor health and mobility now going off the beaten track isn’t sensible. At least I know now that the Lees valley Road isn’t worth it. I definitely must check out the Lilybank Road though in the future but again for me going solo past civilisation isn’t really possible. Love watching your adventures. Maybe you’ll get to do what one of the comments recommends and go up the Godley first before the Macaulay. When I did the station to station trip through there it truly was the trip of a lifetime but it costs an absolute fortune now. I went in 2003. One of my favourite days there was the Rata Peaks track which starts just before Mesopotamia station. Stunning drive out there to the end of the road before going back over the Rata Peaks track. You should look into seeing if that one is allowable with permission from the station.

Thanks Sue! It's such an amazing place down there eh. Rainbow at the end of (a dry) summer would be fine - a RAV4 would have made it through no worries when I went, not much water around. But yeah understand not wanting to risk being in the middle of nowhere solo! I'm sure on a sunny day Lees Valley would be cooler, but it's mostly just farmland. Defo' want to head back down to those valleys and explore them properly - I started a bit late in the day at a stressful time. Ohh wow - that would have been amazing! I've looked at a few of those trips out of curiosity - they go to some amazing spots eh

Overland NZ I’m guessing most of the tracks on station to station are reserved simply for their customers through most of the summer as they’re all on private station tracks but it’s always worth asking the stations. Each day of the route pretty much goes all the way up to the end of the road river valleys, over one of the ranges and back out down the next valley. Rata Peaks was one of my favourites.

Awesome mate! Sat down with (another coffee) to watch. Good lockdown curing but also making me miss the hills even more. Such a shame we couldn't catch up nor you have more time down here. Rainbow is always very dry in about March, so any fords you would have seen last time would have most likely been dry. Question: Do you record off your GoPro in the cab/windscreen mount?

    • @OverlandNZTV

Thanks man! Ohh man, editing this was hard - just wanted to get back out there. Yeah wasn't ideal - truck is still in Christchurch though, so good excuse to come back down and try tee up a day trip or something. Yeah very true - not a huge amount of water around anywhere at that time of year. Yep, sure do - have a couple of GoPros and suction cups - setup one for in car and move the others around, works super well
