  • The video explores various conifer plants, focusing on their distinct qualities and optimal uses in gardening:
    1. Irish Bell Bosnian Pine: Known for its conical shape and dense, compact habit, this plant adds a unique aesthetic to landscapes. It thrives in zones 4-7, making it suitable for bonsai and complementing Japanese maples.
    2. Pinus parviflora 'Goldilocks': This dwarf Japanese white pine boasts blue-green foliage with bright gold and yellow highlights on new growth. It's visually striking and suitable for zones 5-9, requiring protection from hot afternoon sun.
    3. Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca': Renowned for its striking silvery-blue foliage, it grows upright and serves as an excellent focal or foundational plant. Hardy in zones 5-9, it thrives with good drainage and offers exceptional color.
    4. Pinus Sylvestris 'Moseri': A dwarf mountain pine with short and long needles, it turns bright yellow in winter, adding vibrant color to gardens. Ideal for zones 3-8, it suits container gardening and bonsai.
    5. Pinus parviflora 'Fukuzumi': A spreading Japanese white pine wider than tall, ideal for bonsai and container gardening. Hardy in zones 5-7, it features variegated foliage, adding texture to landscapes.
    The hosts share their enthusiasm for conifers and Japanese maples, inviting viewers to explore their extensive conifer catalog and sign up for notifications about new arrivals. They provide insights into each plant's unique traits, growth habits, recommended zones, and suitability for various garden settings, demonstrating how these conifers can enhance any landscape.

    I like the Goldilocks and the Irish Bell conifers. I will have to take another long, hard look at the website to see some more of the dwarf conifers for my small front sloped garden. Thanks for the video and all of your hard work. I do enjoy getting your emails as well during the week.

    Planted a Zukuzumi last year. Really cool horizontal, almost windswept like growth.

    my fave is the Irish Bells. While I love confiers for the way they contrast and highlight japanese maples, my failure rate with them is high enough that I have started avoiding them (except for chamaecyparis). I garden in the Atlanta, GA area and the high humidity disagrees with many conifers, so it would be good to know when a cultivar is recommended for the South or not.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому +1

      Yes for sure. Humidity can be different but typically any of the zone 8-9 ones work for ATL. Thanks for watching!

    They surely pair well with the JP's. I just ordered the Horstmann. I was wondering if I could train it to fit a narrow space at the end of my garage and side walk up against the brick wall. Maybe 18 ins by 24 ins by 8 ft?

    Do conifers survive in hot weather?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому +1

      Some do so it just depends on the type honestly

  • @deineath
    @deineath 2 роки тому +1

    how to find out which of the trees are grafted?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому +2

      Depends a little to the type of conifer honestly. Pines are typically always grafted. So are cedars. Many types like the cryptomeria are rooted cuttings. Actually all the ones in this video are plants that are grafted

    • @deineath
      @deineath 2 роки тому +1

      @@MrMapleShow Thanks for the information on conifers. I sometimes see 'grafted' or 'seedling' on Japanese maples notes on your website, but not for all of them. Would you say most of JMs are grafted unless noted otherwise?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому +2

      @@deineath yes for sure. Most named cultivars are grafted to reproduce as the best method. We occasionally do offer seedlings or rooted cuttings of a few types for bonsai but it is noted on all maples if they are rooted as that would be outside the norm.
