I think Anthony focused too much on the perceived shallowness of the lyrics to see the underlying meaning of it all. I personally agree that the album wasn't good but I don't like the weak reasoning Anthony gave.
+DazeOfWar I think he just skimmed the lyrics. Especially the "Oh my god, I'm becoming my dad" comment. Taken out of context, it sounds like whining, but when you take the whole song into account, which basically talks about an emotional wreck and a complete addict, it's kinda eerie.
This review is infuriating. The lead singer is clean. 100% sober. He doesn't get handed money by his father. He's dead broke, homeless, and music is getting him back on his feet. His girlfriend passed away. He was molested. There's much more depth to this album than you can tell. Christ...
+ofcoursecali But of course, you make fair points. I find the track "Drone" to be excruciating to listen to. It's brutal. "Bad Habits" and "40oz on Repeat" are the two highlights for me.
+Xela Weeks Did I say the record was good? No. It's simply unfair to call this record a "HEY, let's party and get f*cked up!" album. It's more than that. The first album was, but "Too" isn't.
+ofcoursecali I feel crutching artistic depth on a tortured life is a cheap and immature way to value one's own conjurings. You should watch "Frank", very insightful black comedy indie flick about indie music and the struggle of an artist and how they relate to their own suffering, and whether it positively or negatively influences their art.
Sober is intentionally annoying, a lot of the lyrics on this album are coming from the point of view from somebody who's had experience with depression and overdose. I don't think they're really complaining. They're just expressing frustrations that they've been through.
yup Overdose was about what Zac felt when he took an overdose after his girlfriend died, I think Bad Medicine was also related to Zac's behaviour after his girlfriend died
it's not satire it's a rehab album the lead singer Zac was getting clean and was suicidal because his girlfriend died with his unborn baby from a drug over dose
old comment ik but like i still listen to this and was curious if fantano put a review out and saw it. ig he can't know every fact about every band he reviews but fuck, knowing just a little bit of facts like this its impossible to say this album isnt filled with real emotional pain. i didnt find out about zacs personal history until after hearing it first time but even then i still felt it was real af. just shocked he was so off base, ik its hard when your job is to read as much into the album you listen to as possible, but fuck when you do that with the wrong background you end up way off.
The trashy, whiny narcissism that they put forth is exactly why I love this album. If you don't look into FIDLAR beyond what's on the surface you'll enjoy them a lot more.
+Michael Little "If you don't look into FIDLAR beyond what's on the surface you'll enjoy them a lot more." That is literally what he said, but I don't know if it is a typo.
I can understand the criticism of FIDLAR sounding whiny, it's part of their style and it will make or break your opinion on them. For me, it's part of why I love them. Tracks like 40oz on Repeat sound like a desperate, insecure cry for help thrown into a catchy yet scratchy punk track. They are purposefully braty and aggressive. I think calling it "almost satire without a point" is accurate. For me it's a plus, for you it's a minus, and that's all good. As for them singing about the same subject matter over and over again, while I understand that point, and while this doesn't necessarily excuse it, many artists sing about similar subject matter over and over again. tl;dr: Respect your opinion, mine differs. And that's ok.
well....... no, this record was really about overcoming addiction, zac wrote a lot of the songs on the record about being on drugs but then finally getting sober. the record was a bridge from being that punk band that loved to fucking party, to having to accept the fate of becoming an adult, its not about being whiny or bratty, its about accepting your fate, having life catch up to you and trying to do something about it. Also overdose was about his wife dying while pregnant with his child of a heroin overdose
Holy shit that last line…. Had no idea. Also, I feel that’s kind of the same for their latest album of 2024. They feel more mature. Which so does the audience. I was listening to them the past ten years from when I was 15. I’m 25 now and their lyrics still resonate with me today.
It's pretty ironic that someone as much in the irony addled "aesthetic" scene as you can't get the liberal use of irony and self awareness on a lot of these tracks.
I actually don't agree with this review, it has a more personal meaning then "hey let's go get fucked up and party" you can hear this on overdoes and a few others. I actually really enjoy this album and this band. I'm ready for the insulting comments, or people actually being mature and if not agreeing with me will just scroll down, but it's the Internet.
And I will say, I think a lot of this album went over your head if you haven't looked into the band and the singer and all the stuff he's been through.
I agree. I think anthony makes fair points (as always) but I still enjoyed this album overall. honestly not as much as their first full-length, but I still thought it was really well made and fun to listen to. I understand not liking it, but I think he did miss the point a couple times. if he hadnt, I feel like this may have been a 5 (or MAYBE 6)/10 for him, although I can't put words in his mouth. I'm just theorizing.
This band was pretty much living on nothing before this record. They were broke, definitely not being "handed anything" by their parents and in fact, their STILL broke. I do agree that this album has some components that would make it annoying to some people such as yourself, however, you are looking at this record the wrong way. Some songs off of this record are about not wanting to grow up, which is definitely a common theme throughout the modern music age, but most of these songs are written by Zac Carper, the lead singer who has in the past struggled with drug addiction (still is) as well as severe depression and these are definitely depicted throughout this record as well as their self titled album released at the beginning of 2013.
This is the worst deconstruction of lyrics I have ever seen/heard in my life. It's one of the most accurate reflections of drug use I've ever heard in music. The fact he's a year sober should give you a hint on his stance on drugs at the moment. This is just a weak review. You've taken no effort to actually understand the lyrics or do any background research. How people can agree with you is hilariously sad. Re-review the album once you actually do your research and look at the album within its context. Or don't, ignorance is bliss.

@Jack Tilley No. It was quite a bad review like a lot of his reviews where he doesn't do research at all on an album and band and has bias views because of how they sound to him
It's a rehab album for just genuinely being on the wrong end of what bands like RHCP would say is the "Fucked up ways of California". I think it's really honest, they could have come out and made the whole album directly about specific instances of structural violence against them and had it sound like feminist slam poetry, but they chose to keep the punk rock "fuck life" attitude throughout a record that still spews lines like "I wanna lock myself inside my room with a 40oz on repeat" and tracks like "Why generation". These examples pretty much admit their faults in knowing how to deal with the feelings of being "lazy, drug-addled 20somethings". This is why the like to dislike ratio on this video is so shitty, a lot of people here know where he is coming from because they feel similar or look up Zac's stories. And the "oh my god I am becoming my dad" line that you rip on is the exact same sentiment that you then place as an argument against them literally 5 seconds later.
sober is one of my favorite songs of the album... its about how zac's gf broke up with him over the phone while he was in rehab because he overdosed soooooo
i think that you've more than missed the point here. it's not as simple as whining, and it's not as simple as the result of the party in the self title (as the comments would have you believe). i don't want to tell you that they're complex in song writing or anything else, but this album for me feels like an attempt to take responsibility for what they've done, but not being used to the results of their actions. i think they are complaining, or 'whining' as you so pretentiously put it, but i don't think it is fair to put them down for that. that's not simply a mistake, it's a statement. they have a group to market to, and now they're trying to speak to them. this album is a message about what happens when people don't have the guts to take responsibility. this theme fits what zac had gone through in his past, and i think it might be a mistake to brush this album off as less than that. of course, i know that it's popular to disagree with you, but whatever. i really like this album, and this band. i see your point on "Sober" because i hate that song, but eh, i certainly disagree with you.
This album was written as the singer was getting sober after being addicted to a slew of narcotics after 10+ years. If you read some of his more in depth interviews (the one on consequence of sound in particular) he goes in to some really heavy stuff that happened to him before and while he was using. Because I knew this story I definitely didn't get that spoiled and whiney vibe from this album that you did and, if you're at all invested in their music, give this record another spin after having a read of what happened between this and their last album. Peace.
I feel their lyrical style fits their image. It appeals to a bunch of first world twenty somethings that have no idea what to do with their lives and gives a sort of safe haven for these people in a very blunt, relatable way. Very much like the drugs they sing about, their music gives a very short, energy-filled, and emotional high. Albeit they don't necessarily have a very poetic style or a deep message, I don't think that's the point of Fidlar. Fidlar shouldn't be listened to with the expectation that it'll blow your mind or move you on a spiritual level. It should be listened to as something essentially depressed/confused/naive young people can relate to, especially those roughly between the ages of 18 and 25. As something that has value in appealing to those self-destructive and depressing feelings most feel or have felt at a younger age by saying "Hey! We feel you man! Let's celebrate it." I myself enjoy Fidlar for these reasons though I can't say I'm quite a die hard fan. But regardless, their music is meant to relay a very straightforward and superficial message and shouldn't be judged on the same criteria as other, "deeper" and more "artistic" bands. Those bands are on a different playing field entirely. Just my take at least.
Anthony obviously did not give this album much attention to the lyrics or what they actually meant or just doesn't know anyone who has drug problems and/or how they feel. Came at this with a very "dad attitude." It's kinda weird to watch this after seeing he gave the Money Store a strong 9-10 for like the same reasons he score this album lower, lol. It's loud, obnoxious, uncomfortable and in your face and does NOT condone a healthy way of living at all, lol. I love Death Grips and i know it's two completely different genres (although everyone I know tends to adore both of them) but the criticism is so inconsistent.
Where do you base your assumption that fidlar are privileged and rich? You have championed danny brown, who lyrically has a very similar outlook (addiction, self-pity etc.) but I haven't seen you challenging his lyrics in the same way.
it's because the lead singer (Zac) became an addict, got his girlfriend into it, find out she overdosed, died and have a miscaridge, which led him to wanna kill himself, so yeah this album is much more moody and about reasons why he wanted to whine, because a lot of bad shit happened at the time, maybe do some research before hand :)
"Spoiled" lead singer was abused and neglected as a child was a meth addict in Hawaii for a big part of his life. i feel like you didn't do much research on this one, also glad in 2017 you improved your lyric deconstruction game yet you still gave damn a 7 >:(.
I understand your thoughts completely but the singer is getting sober while recording this album. Myself being a recovering addict this album was very related and relevant. This album, although it's hard to tell through your perspective, was a lot more than the surface level topics you picked up on. I think you should review Spirit Clubs 'Slouch'. Love your videos!
Sober is Zac talking to Heroin, it’s personifying the drug that he struggled through addiction with and finally landed on “YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO” towards the drug.
i think this review is pretty offensive..you haven't spend one minute with any of them so you can't just suppose what kind of people they are ..i mean sure it's your opinion but this is not a reasoning i'd expect from you anthony!
This sophomore album was a step above their debut record and quite noticeably. It's not for everyone out there though. in fact, after watching this video I would completely understand why most casual listeners would be against it. BUT!!! But... Unless you yourself have spent a good 2 or 3 years addicted and dabbling with amazing substances, there is no way you can fully appreciate this album. Which is what i suspect is going on with this review video. Anthony Fantano (to the best of my knowledge) has never never been/is not/will never be the type of person to ever lose their total sense of being to a blissful world of substances that the greater majority of the population will never know. So... in short, this is truly an album for abusers. An album that was tailor made for the people living in that dark crevice of the world most are to scared (and also way to smart) to explore. Unless you've been to hell and back on that magical journey of self awareness, this album is not for you.
I can understand how somebody who hasn't had to deal with addiction first hand could have your opinion on this album but I tattooed this on my wrist lol
I came to your videos because I liked your opinion because you covered lots of popular rap albums I love, but I’m staying because of the respect you give to everyone. I searched to see if you’d covered fidlar just for fun and sure as hell you went over it with the professionalism you give every other. You are really top notch man. Honestly
I actually think the song Sober is one of the best on the album, at least when you look at it as the vocalist going through a depressive state and having to deal with shitty friends who care more about how the vocalist is killing their vibe rather than being concerned with their mental health. To me the whole is a representation of depression in many forms.
Hey Killthony, I just saw Foo Fighters and Gary Clark Jr. live last night! I gotta ask, what do you think of Clark's fist record and his new release? Thanks!
I interpreted Sober a lot differently, I saw it as a person in a one sided relationship who's stopped taking drugs and drinking and is starting to get withdrawal effects and it's making him angry
Eh I really enjoyed this album. Of course it's not gonna make any year end lists, just a bunch of catchy songs. My only complaint is the verses in Sober. The hook was so simple but catchy, and the verses pretty much ruin the song.
Why review Slayer's new album? I've listened to the song Repentless and it's the same thing again. Is there anything new Slayer brings into the music scene?
Whenever I watch any Anthony video where he attacks the human characteristics of a person or an album or anything it makes me feel like he's attacking me even if I don't have the negative characteristics he's talking about. :(
I think you raise some good points but there's one thing you're missing out on, in my opinion. This album is the band in the process of getting clean. While the first album is just a non-stop party, it also shows how one dimensional the band was back then, where all they really cared about was partying and skating on the west coast. Too, on the other hand, is them looking at their behavior and realizing, "Hey, this isn't okay" along with some introspection on what they are if they're not a bunch of teens partying. The depth of this second album definitely doesn't have the same level as something like OK Computer or anything, but compared to their first album, Too, to me, is fucking amazing. Seeing a band come this far between only ONE album is amazing and as an artist it makes me happy to see people start to be more meaningful and overall artistic with their music.
Anthony, please read Fidlar's story to understand what they've recently been through because it does make some sense in the context of the music (I'm not saying it's that good of an album...I would give it a 6 because I liked the guitars and rhythms), just saying it's not a bratty whine album all the day through. Also, review the Libertines new album (another group affected by drugs)!!!!
Will you please review the new Low (ones and sixes)? I've listened to it and i already kinda know what i think about it, but i'd still like to hear your opinion on it
Hey Anthony! Do you enjoy listening to random songs from an artist? Or do you mainly listen to their whole LPs all the time? For example, specific songs that you enjoy listening from artists that you don't like. If you read this, thanks! Your channel is GOD TIER.
I respect Anthony's review of any album but I always have different opinions, duh, that's how music is, but it just seems like if an album isn't doing something COMPLETELY new, or challenging the norm, he just writes it off as boring or annoying, or he criticizes it for the exact same reasons, I personally love fidlar and yes, they can come off as whiny, but knowing the history of the members of this band, I completely understand it, coming from a similar background, so obviously it's gonna resonate with me more than him, but dismissing a bands purpose or meaning because you can't understand it or feel some kind of connection with it, and undermining what they're saying because of that, is, from my opinion, a tad bit unprofessional, I've been watching for a long time, and I enjoy different outlooks on music, it's one of the best things about music, but it just seems as if it doesn't resonate with him, he'll completely write it off and call it trash

And the "oh my god I am becoming my dad" line that you rip on is the exact same sentiment that you then place as an argument against them literally 5 seconds later.
Holy fuckin shit dude you're taking this album wayyyyy too seriously.
sober is one of my favorite songs of the album... its about how zac's gf broke up with him over the phone while he was in rehab because he overdosed soooooo
+bella del rey it's my favorite too
i think that you've more than missed the point here. it's not as simple as whining, and it's not as simple as the result of the party in the self title (as the comments would have you believe). i don't want to tell you that they're complex in song writing or anything else, but this album for me feels like an attempt to take responsibility for what they've done, but not being used to the results of their actions. i think they are complaining, or 'whining' as you so pretentiously put it, but i don't think it is fair to put them down for that. that's not simply a mistake, it's a statement. they have a group to market to, and now they're trying to speak to them. this album is a message about what happens when people don't have the guts to take responsibility. this theme fits what zac had gone through in his past, and i think it might be a mistake to brush this album off as less than that.
of course, i know that it's popular to disagree with you, but whatever. i really like this album, and this band. i see your point on "Sober" because i hate that song, but eh, i certainly disagree with you.
Just my take at least.
you have it 100% figured out
I 100% agree, and their earlier stuff, 2013/2014 and before youtube only songs are pretty much only this.

Review the new Libertines record!
+Rob Mann NOT
+Rob Mann YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
+Louis Jeon I'll review it for you: SHITE
disgraceland uk lol not really..
+Louis Jeon You're right, I was too forgiving. It's actually UTTER SHITE.
You completely missed the point
it's because the lead singer (Zac) became an addict, got his girlfriend into it, find out she overdosed, died and have a miscaridge, which led him to wanna kill himself, so yeah this album is much more moody and about reasons why he wanted to whine, because a lot of bad shit happened at the time, maybe do some research before hand :)
man I really don't like this guy
YOU SOOOOO MISSED THE FUCKING POINT.
Fandango Is Dong Lover, All Right
this was underappreciated you deserved more you poor soul.

+DYEMB fuck off
I didn't mind this
wow never heard that one before
The lead singer is 100% sober after being addicted to heroine and meth, so this album is more about his sobriety, not about doing drugs.
dood, i love this record omg
Can you review the new Slayer album, Repentless?
+Jacket you don't wanna mess with him

+Ryan Lanz Black Hippy!!!
+Ryan Lanz 5/10
i forget how hard you miss the point every time
Sober is Zac talking to Heroin, it’s personifying the drug that he struggled through addiction with and finally landed on “YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO” towards the drug.
> I love picking out records from peoples profile pics
As a entitled millennial i really enjoyed this album. I'm feelin' a strong 7
Coming back to one of Anthony Fantano’s worst opinions of all time. If I ever see you in person, baldy, I’m mentioning this video by name.
you fucking tell that baldy like it is mattafat
bro this is the one review from him that genuinely pissed me off lol. i'm still disappointed in the melon ngl
i think this review is pretty offensive..you haven't spend one minute with any of them so you can't just suppose what kind of people they are ..i mean sure it's your opinion but this is not a reasoning i'd expect from you anthony!
I can understand what Anthony is saying but their shows are way too much fun for me to care
mmm look at the beautiful record in the background
+James C What album is it? I'm just curious, love to give it a listen?
+Seth Williams Sun Kil Moon - Benji
enjoy
Sick, thanks mate. I will!
I can understand how somebody who hasn't had to deal with addiction first hand could have your opinion on this album but I tattooed this on my wrist lol
have cal review the new 3pac ep
I wish fantano would answer my question I asked him on tumblr. I get that he's busy but I really want to know how to find people to form a band with.
I came to your videos because I liked your opinion because you covered lots of popular rap albums I love, but I’m staying because of the respect you give to everyone. I searched to see if you’d covered fidlar just for fun and sure as hell you went over it with the professionalism you give every other. You are really top notch man. Honestly
Hey Anthony review White People the Official Documentary by MTV
When are you going to do 90059?
The Arcs?
Review the new Battles and The Libertines albums?
I actually think the song Sober is one of the best on the album, at least when you look at it as the vocalist going through a depressive state and having to deal with shitty friends who care more about how the vocalist is killing their vibe rather than being concerned with their mental health. To me the whole is a representation of depression in many forms.
Hey Killthony, I just saw Foo Fighters and Gary Clark Jr. live last night! I gotta ask, what do you think of Clark's fist record and his new release? Thanks!
REVIEW 90059 YOU BEAUTIFUL HAIRLESS BEAST
My favorite part of this album is the stencil that comes with the vinyl
You planning on listening to the new Ben Folds album?
I love how this video has so many dislikes.
I interpreted Sober a lot differently, I saw it as a person in a one sided relationship who's stopped taking drugs and drinking and is starting to get withdrawal effects and it's making him angry
I know you don't normally do country reviews but you should consider reviewing the new Turnpike Troubadours project when it comes out September 18th
I like the album too but dont hate on the melon for his opinion man
Eh I really enjoyed this album.
Would you mind reviewing the all them witches album "Lightning at the door"?
Can you please review the new Panopticon when it's released?
Would you prefer these guys or cerebral ballzy?
I agree that maybe the album is a bit whiney but after reading some interviews I kinda sympathise
Can you review Repentless? I'm interested in your opinion (obviously).
Yo Vegeta's mixtape just came out not to long ago. Its called "Been a Saiyan". You should review it just for fun lol.
You should check out This band called Qeen Moo. They are from Hartford I think. They have this really cool sound I think you might dig.
la di da di is out, are you doing a review on it?
Where’s the Surviving The Dream review. It came out today man. Wya? Geeeez

This might change your mind on the lyrics and such: consequenceofsound.net/2015/08/fidlar-stupid-decisions/
+theneedledrop will you be reviewing 90059?
Yo Anthony! I'd like to see your opinion on Jay Rock's new album
