5:56 Store bedding in the room where it'll be used. Bottom dresser drawer, in a tote under the bed or on a shelf in the closet. Less steps to retrieve when time to change the bedding.

I should have watched this before deciding to organize EVERY room in the house all at once. Do I need to tell you how overwhelmed I am now and Oh! Forgot to tell you that I’m also moving furniture around just to make things more complicated and back breaking!!! What was I thinking????? Thanks Norrine, you gave me so many ideas to get back on track.

You always make sense in all your advice, I'm trying to do one step at a time. Kitchen was first, living room was next now I'm doing my bedroom. I went through all my bagged, and packed clothes recently. Half didn't fit, 1/4th was for winter, the last 1/4th was what I do wear. I donated 3 black trash bags full, put my winter clothes in storage. It was easy, and the result was awesome. Thank you for helping this hoarder get organized. lol

Take another hint from the grocery store. In our area we have sections dedicated to TexMex or International, etc. One store groups sale items as meal suggestions. When spaghetti sauce is on sale, they set up an Italian night display with pastas, sauces, cheeses, salad dressings and salad toppers, even prepared pizza crusts. Sometimes there's a mini freezer with frozen garlic breads and gelato.
Our kids had favorite styles of meals. When I organized our pantry I based it on those things which made it easier to find as a meal. As they grew, it was easier for the kids to make meals on their own. We moved in 18 years ago and that system still works even as the kids moved out.

I love your new filming space you've created with your new desk set up. It's airier, larger, the lighting is better and you're no longer 'looking up' as you were in your old set up. I wanted to offer a small hint for those looking for more affordable storage boxes, especially for drawers. Ask the deli staff at your favorite store to save the boxes that the bricks of American cheese comes in for you. The bottoms are corrugated cardboard and can be cut down and fit in telescope style as needed. They'd fit folded socks perfectly, tubes of lipstick, all those hair ties, etc. In the kitchen they'll hold kool-aid packs or gravy/seasonal packets. I've got some that are nearly 20 years old in my drawers and if I want to change them out for new, all I have to do is ask (or just get them myself...I work at the store I get them from!)

At the age of 72 I have already acquired everything I need or want, so shopping trips have been rare in my old age. But I gained 10 pounds while convalescing from a nasty bout of COVID, so I now need clothes that will cover my newly-expanded backside until I can slim down. I ONLY shop at a local upscale thrift store -- no returns, so purchases must indeed be donated if I find that I'm unable to use them. After laundering clothes, I place them on the left side of the closet or drawer. When I thoroughly clean my bedroom every spring, the rarely used clothing on the right is very easy to recognize and remove for donation.

I recently went through my bedroom closet and got rid of a lot of stuff. Some things were too small, or i didn't like anymore, hadn't worn in a year or more. Also, went through my shoes and got rid of a lot of shoes I love, but can't wear anymore for whatever reason. I took all the stuff to a thrift shop that uses the money they make to help support homeless veterans. I served in the Navy for 3 years, and I know that in this area there are many homeless vets. It felt so good to declutter I am now going through the rest of my clothing to see what else I can release to a good cause. I'll get around to the bathroom eventually. I organized my kitchen with bins, over two years ago. It has stayed organized since then. Occasionally, I may do a quick look through to put things in the proper bin. (Husband is not good at putting things back where they belong 😁). It has made my life so much easier and I know where everything is. Bins are my best friend. I am going to start putting my books in bins in the bookcase. I have whole collections of my favorite authors and they are getting mixed up with other authors. So I am going to put them in bins, with the spines setting upwards, so I can just pull out a bin and look for a favorite book to read.

I used to be very guilty of retail therapy. Though I'm still far from being organized, I taught myself to buy only if I know where it is going to live in my space and what I'm going to use it for. Else, I appreciate it in the store and put it back on the shelf there.
I love having my crafting supplies around me which, I admit, is a lot. I do knitting, crocheting, beading, embroidery, paper crafts, drawing. Guess what's currently in the best state, yes, my crafting supplies. Everything else I consider maintaining life.
Emptying my dishwasher the other day I realized how many coffee mugs I have. They've been there for years. Just a few of them make me really happy and I use them regularly, the rest is just keeping company to my faves.
Oh yes and I have a happy story to tell: K., the daughter of my crafty friend C. has a crafty daughter of her own, L., to whom I donated two pounds (!) of beads about two years ago. The family has set up a jacuzzi in their back yard under a car port. It has two accesses. L. used up all of the donated beads to create two beaded curtains. Gorgeous!

I adapted your cookie sheet method to just a small tray on my desk. If I have a project I need to finish I can’t put it away or I totally forget about it. The tray keeps it corralled so all the supplies I need are sat on the tray ready for when I pick it up again. I have been doing this for my pencil drawings as I can’t sit for 5 hours and complete things as I have pain in my hands. This method has allowed me to complete my first final piece in a very long time! I don’t have shelves in my room but I do have a deep drawer, I got 2 A4 clear boxes and put my longer term/planned projects in there. Honestly tho, I haven’t touched those in 6 months so I think I will clear that drawer out and just use the tray from now on 😊

I keep all the meds in the kitchen, not the bathroom, and do the weekly pill containers for myself and my husband. I don't like anything on the kitchen or bathroom counters. Just a few decorative pieces, and the microwave in the kitchen. I have two closets or spring/summer and fall/winter clothes. There again I'm always sorting through and donating. Same with kitchen items. I will not donate anything that is dirty, stained or broken.

So nice to see you Norrine, I always all your tips and ideas, but this old house is a joke (and not a funny one). Linen closet, what's that - this place never had one. The original built in closet for my bedroom can't be used for clothes, it's too small but mostly because it has the breaker box for the entire house wiring right in the middle back wall closet and hanging rod for clothes goes right in front of breaker box. There is nothing that could really help this place, except to tear it all down and rebuild it normal, LoL. But, for me, the best part is knowing I have you for my cheerleader. Your the best. I have the majority (not all, but..) of your videos saved in a playlist on my own called "The Crafty Organizer". Thank you for being my cheerleader. Take care and God bless you and yours.

I'm new to your channel and absolutely love your organizational tips and style. I wish you lived nearer to provide an inperson evaluation. I'm presently trying to reorganize my craft room/office. I'm packing up the room to empty it before reorganizing. My plan is to build an "L" shaped desk for all the craft machines supported by three 30inch bookcases. I have a good number of containers which I hope will aid in storage. I saw your video on storing craft paper, however, I have much more paper than that. I bought magazine boxes and hope they will suffice. Gosh, the task seems so overwhelming and I get a bit anxious but I'm determined to complete the project before the holidays. Fingers crossed. I'm viewing your videos a few a day to hopefully gain insight into better organization.

It's weird how many of the things you mentioned, are things that I have already started to try, or was already thinking about. I already have some "in progress" storage boxes. I plan on incorporating most of these throughout my house. First is to donate the clothes that I know that I will not be wearing again. The only issue I have is that my anxiety doesn't make any of this easy. But the video was very inspiring.
I'm so happy that I found your channel a few months ago. 💜🙂

I am so happy you are here too!!!! I don't want you feeling anxious! So, take it super slow. Maybe let go of 2-3 items of clothing at a time. Or pull out what you don't think you will want and move it to another area of your home for how. This will allow you to enjoy the new open space - without the stress of letting those items go.

Still working on kitchen remodel so I’ll post pictures soon. I have baskets I can easily see what’s I them, no lower cabinets only drawers this so amazing no lost areas. Also sheets for guest room are always a different color than master bedroom so I know exactly what is fir what room. Love the pillowcase idea. Thank you again for all the wonderful ideas.

That helped. My post-hurricane kitchen is a disaster and the problem is the combination of daily use items with enough supplies for lengthy power outages and no trips to the store. I stared at the full back wall of shelves and I’m going to put the food supplies on the narrow outer shelves that currently house cookbooks and put cookbooks, appliances and medical gear in the wide middle shelves. It’s Louisiana. We cook a lot.

@@TheCraftyOrganizer I Just thought of a problem that I have in the area of 'categorizing'. "What Did I Call It?" Like for filing for example, did I call it car, vehicle or automobile? And I may not realize that I filled it under two or three categories until much later. Creating an index is helpful if the task is filing, but that was just an easy example of my categories challenge. What if it wasn't filing? Another challenge under the same concept is "where did I put it" when I 'put it away'?

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  3 роки тому +1

OH!!! I used to do that too! LOL Simplify and make your categories more general - and keep a master list of your categories - so they remain consistent. I'd have cars under travel.... so they'd also be with planes, trains, boats, etc. I'd keep the likes together UNDER travel still... and alphabetized so I could find them quickly. Does that make sense?

I did purge one of pantry’s and put 4 small bins with cookie cutters, muffin liners, piping bags and tips, and a misc baking related items up top on a short shelf and my stand mixer and ninja foodi on the bottom shelf. Wow! I love this video. Now I really want you to expand each area and go more in depth. I stopped buying my husband clothes years ago, because I would buy them and they would sit ON TOP of the dresser forever. One time I tried to return some pants he never wore and was so embarrassed to find out they had sitting around for three years! Now I let him buy his own clothes, or at the very least take him with me. I loved the idea of organizing the kitchen in zones of all baking, all pasta etc together. The only thing I disagreed with was not over buying. I have no problem buying cases of things I know we will eat eventually. This not only saves me money, but in times of financial difficulty ( my husband was unemployed for 14 months during Covid) it literally saves us from starvation. I did not need to buy pasta, rice, oatmeal, canned soups, canned tomatoes, paper towels, bath soap, flour, or olive oil the entire time, and I only had to buy toilet paper only once. I am a huge fan of having food storage. If I have enough for a year of basic items, I feel much more at peace.
I love the idea of getting rid of clothes and shoes I’m not wearing. When we moved into our new bedroom, got rid of our dresser. This gave me more space in my room, less horizontal space to set down and forget stuff 😳 and forced me to file fold our clothes the put them on our closet shelves. I mad custom boxes to fit perfectly onto our shelves. I used old diaper boxes from my granddaughter and covered them with faux leather I purchased super cheap from Walmart. They look so good!
I will be going through my linen closets soon! I have way too many towels. The only problem is, how many tea towels or kitchen towels should I keep? Also how many dish cloths and wash clothes do I need to keep. Finally, I need ideas on how many table cloths I need and how to store them. I would also love a video about organizing cleaning products. I just don’t seem to have enough space.
I will definitely go back and watch the video on paper solutions too. I have unique paper problems because of my varied interests. I love to do genealogy and family history and have yet to figure out a good filing system for all the papers that entails. I also am struggling with things like physical photos, heirloom pieces, etc.
I love your videos and look forward to many more to come. You have such great ideas.

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer

I'm so glad you had the surplus of items to cover those 14 months!!! And that you had the room for all those supplies - that's awesome!!!! Love your use of diaper boxes too! That is amazing and right up there with how I organize. For the towels and table cloths - Do you entertain often? If so, keep enough to cover the different types of themes you entertain for. Otherwise, maybe one for each new season should be sufficient. Towels for washing bodies and face... if your family likes a new one each day - then enough for a week. Otherwise, 2-3 per person should last until the next laundry date. Tea and kitchen towels really depend on the size of your family! As a family of 3, I change mine out every other day - so 4 is all I need for the week. But, if you have a larger family and need more than one to get through the day, you'd have to adjust up. Does that make sense? I really appreciate you watching! Feel free to keep questions and feedback coming - I love reading what others do and helping if I can.

I rejected the idea of storing sheets in one of the pillowcases many years ago, I use large ziplock bags and write the size on the bag. When you change the sheets the clean set just goes into the bag for that size, and no soiled pillow cases to spoil a fresh bed.

  • @MissChristastrophy

I've always been the "I can return it" type. My daughter once asked me "But why the extra work to return it 'IF' when there are 50 just like it here. If you can't stop thinking of it come back tomorrow to buy it..." I discovered that by bed time the item was out of my brain. So now, if it is on Clearance is the only time I allow the "I can return it if...." Purchases. Out side of that every other item and price will be available tomorrow, or online or at another store etc. When my kids and husband were harping on me that I "Don't need" x, y, z, It just made me want them more. I justified it with the "I'm a doggone adult" attitude. Now, I allow myself 1 clearance purchase each trip (I only go shopping on Fridays as I live 45 min from the nearest retailer) and it has to be at least 30% off regular price, and/or no more than 3 of the item available at that price point. I even check surrounding area store apps to make sure. I still find myself with the occasional "I forgot I bought that" Item(s) and when that happens and the item is still in the package, new, I move it to my "Gifts" Closet. There are many items I buy here and there that end up in the "Gift" closet, that I thought I had to Have. So I started to add "Will you happily gift/donate this if I find I don't open it." to my evaluation steps. It helps me to feel in control and not being chastised by family over those special purchases.

I am so guilty of much that you talked about which is why things are in the state they are. I've put a halt to all the nonsense and am finally getting it under control. Since I am no longer working, my days are my own and I can spend each day working on the mess. Craft supplies quickly became a disaster because I didn't have a storage plan in place before I started getting supplies. I am boxing things now by category such as ribbon, glassware, etc. and once done I can work on one box at a time and keep further mess to a minimum. I have 4 zones around the house chosen and will be storing by seasons and general supplies and everything will be out of view, finally. Shopping for supplies is stopped and once all the organizing is done, I will craft only from my stash. Then shopping will only take place for items that I have run out of. Paper is also a major problem but I now have a shredder next to my desk and shred as I go through mail and work through the paper piles. I have perfected a bookkeeping system that will stop further clutter. I have a lot for goodwill and the rest will go to my church garage sale in the spring. I never thought that I would end up in such a mess but am excited to think that I will finally be clutter free. As you said, it didn't get this way overnight and it won't get fixed overnight. Thanks Norinne. Your practical ideas and suggestions are what put me on this new path.

Everything in our home should have a specific purpose, whether it's for a practical purpose or decor. When shopping or decluttering, ask yourself "Do I really need this?". Use the 5 second rule. If it takes you longer than 5 seconds to answer that question, get rid of it.
Take whatever items you're weeding out and donate them or have a yard sale.
