ok so why can't felons in prison have guns? Isn't that infringing on their rights? You are oversimplifying Chris. I am a gun owner and I am the first to admit that the way the 2nd is written, its a bit vague and people see what they want to see. People either think the 2nd means that gun ownership is unlimited and unrestricted or that its only related to being in a militia. It can't be both yet the 2nd can be interpreted both ways unless one considers what the founders might have intended. But the concept of an "ad-hoc" militia composed of riflemen grabbing rifles off mantles and running to oppose soldiers with the exact same weapons (was the case in 1776) is no longer valid because today's militaries have firepower that will wipe out a group of civilian soldiers in a heartbeat. So the original militia purpose of the 2nd is no longer useful from a military perspective if a hostile power took over. People have been watching too many fantastic and absurd movies like Red Dawn which in real life, won't happen. Even in WW2, the french partisans who were supplied by the allies, did very little damage to the german occupiers and mainly provided intelligence. So the idea that us gun owners will save the republic from the invaders after our military has failed, is nonsense.

Second, the only reason this country isn't completely taken over by the fascist Left is because the citizens are so well armed. That is why they are trying so hard to take every gun away from every citizen, because they know they can't do whatever they want until they do. @@minerran I disagree somewhat about the civilian military not being capable of defending its rights. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and other wars where the States were opposed by people who had little more than small arms. One of them we pulled out of and we're pulling out of another one now. It would be a war of attrition that the trained military may have trouble beating. If the military could take on the many millions of gun owners I'd be slightly surprised. Even if the government could win (which isnt entirely unlikely), the guns citizens have may be just enough to not be worth the trouble of a war.

I love this hearing. It's not just true but fact as well. Gun or no gun if someone attacks me in my own home I'm defending myself and any guest in my home.
The Second Amendment's purpose is to give citizens a way to defend themselves, not only from potential tyrants but also from threats (such as violent criminals) that the government leaves unchecked. Part of the modern problem of interpretation comes from the fact that military weapons are now much more sophisticated than personal firearms.

I have witnessed a lot of floor 2nd amendment hearings but I have never seen them talk so seriously about that this is actually might happen. It is scary thinking of our nations founding fathers rights they PERMANENTLY gave us (too not be infringed) could quite possibly be ripped away from us as Americans.
Were you not paying attention? Our Rights are not "given" to us, or "bestowed" on us, by the Government, the Constitution, or the Founding Fathers. Our Rights are inherent, from birth, and no government has the authority to restrict, limit or deny the free, lawful exercise of those Rights, period.

The republicans were only granted 32 minutes to speak. As it was, the limited number of speakers had to talk fast and keep their comments brief. Just because a representative wasn't there doesn't mean that they aren't working on your behalf to protect your rights.

I choked up listening to these defenders of freedom, go to bat for the constitution. As a former service member, I swore an oath to the people of this country to defend the constitution. I STILL HOLD THAT OATH IN MY HEART TODAY. I’m proud of my representative from South Carolina, and all of the other states that stood up for what this country was founded on. My God I love this land.
I just wish there were more people present during these times. It is insulting that our representatives have to talk to a near empty room and the public don't even know these speeches are happening. These messages deserve to be heard by the whole house, not just the ones speaking and the few who are there because they have to be. Guess it is not worth the time to the democrats to actually participate in the job they are supposed to be doing. I weep for our great Nation and the loss if our rights day by day.

How does this prevent crime? Violent criminals are predators and defenseless people are food. Why aren't we addressing mental health and why the prison system is obviously not working. Maybe if the prison system wasn't such a revolving door we wouldn't have so many criminals in the 1st place.

We should be filing to repeal the National Firearms Act and the machine gun ban, and put measures in place to prevent such laws from ever being passed again on a state or national level, not pleading for the government to "please don't make me register my guns so you can confiscate them at a moment's notice."
