I loved the books as a child, so when I had children & audio books was a option I made them listen to them rather than watch TV. My oldest is now in her late 20s ,😂
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is such a great story. I’ve listened to this story countless times but I can never get enough of it. Eric Idol is such a wonderful narrator. The way he reads the story is simply sublime. Keep them coming because we all absolutely appreciate it. Thank you.
What a totally quirky and endearing story - with excellent narration. I was researching rich industrialists and capitalism in the 20th century and this video was recommended to me. I am 21 years old and listened to the whole thing. My life and research are the better for it! Haha
When I was a youngster myself, I had a really hard time learning to read… I believe I “started” the book with the problems… I remember sitting at my desk at school trying to read a reading assignment pamphlet… and just putting into me, voicing a desire to be able to read… I still remember that particular moment, with the assignment (just not what was written as that was a long time ago), and that moment, it seems clarity entered me. I just knew how to read, and from that moment on, I got really good at reading, and I simply reopened this book’s ok, and read it cover to cover../ my first full read book.
I still have my hard cover copy from the 70’s when I was little. I would read it to my son at bedtime at Christmas time. I can’t wait to read from that same book to my grandkids. Take good care of and hang on to your books!!! ❤
OK I’m glad I found this because I love Eric Idol. He’s an amazing narrator. I’ve never heard this version before and I love the music at the end especially the twinkles. I love it.
Even though the Johnny Depp version is more faithful to the book I still think the 1971 version is more fun. Admittedly Charlie is far better played by Freddie Highmore.
i used to listen to this audiobook every night when i was like 10 otherwise i would be unable to fall asleep - those twinkles at the start are the most nostalgic sound in the world
When you really think about it it is quite a coincidence that Charlie was the only good kid to find a Golden Ticket while the other four we're all selfish greedy and mean
Though, to be fair, the 1970s version made Charlie win because he asked for a Wonka bar to give to his grandfather, which is a selfless act, and is rightfully deserved. In a way, Grandpa Joe singing that it’s his ticket kinda makes sense, since Charlie bought the bar for his grandfather, and it just so happens to have a golden ticket.
Thank you so much for the memories.🙂 I consider myself a book purist, so the change of the movie from the book should have upset me. However, the movie was/is really good & I love the original with Mr. Gene Wilder, therefore, I didn't mind Hollywood's rendition. What still gets me is when Mr. Wonka mentions that one day he'll be dead and he needed someone to take over his factory. 😞 This was so much fun listening. 💯💐
What I don't understand is, the og movie was set in the 70s, so all four grandparents would have been entitled to a pension and disability benefits, the mother would be entitled to unemployment benefits, the whole family would be entitled to housing benefit and free beds on the welfare fund plus charlie would be entitled to a free school lunch every day during term time and during the holidays due to coming from a low income family Of course the og book was set in England. I've never heard this version before
@@sagev.5818 my disability benefits for one are over a thousand pounds a month so with four bedridden pensioners, Charlie's family should be rolling in it
The original film was supposed to be set in England but was actually filmed in Munich, Germany. Well technically West Germany if you want to be exact. I think it was much cheaper to film there. Apparently Roald Dahl was very disappointed with the final film because of the script not sticking to the original book. That's why the follow up The Great Glass Elevator was shelved and not made into a film. To my knowledge I still think this book has yet to be filmed. It might be true about Dahl being less than happy with the film but it seems strange because Roald Dahl was the screen writer. All seems like a made up anecdote to me.
2:52:19 What if this happened?: Mr. Teavee: Here, give him to me. (Takes Mike Teavee and puts him in his coat pocket and stuffs and handkerchief on top) Charlie Bucket: (To Mr. Teavee) Excuse me, Mr. Teavee, but I don't think he could breath in your pocket.

Is this the original or corrected version? I would definitely prefer the original version i have never heard it. I don't care if it might offend these sensitive people today or not
I prefer Veruca getting attacked by the squirrels. I know they did it for the Johnny Depp. Tim Burton fiasco. But I would have liked it in the 1971 version.
The fiasco didn't suck because of Tim Burton though. Tim didn't write it. Why do people credit directors for everything? The only direct. Screenwriters are much important. They re the ones that dictate story and are the reason suck ass movies suck and the reason why great movies are great! Directors are Over rated! Yu can't polish a turd!

Eric idle is the best choice for reading the book to us all.... old and young.
He's absolutely perfect. Love his enthusiasm.
I couldn't agree more!
Never too old to listen to this childhood story 😄
Thank u for helping me to get to sleep 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊💤💤💤💤💤💤
I love Eric Idle and Mr Dahls writing style.
Thank you for helping me sleep.
The shop keeper is probably in the top 10 wholesome characters in the story
Agreed
I think this is the best audiobook narrator I’ve ever listened to!
I love the ending "Anything to eat? You just wait and see!"
I expected nothing less from one of the members of Monty Python. This recording is quite rare.
I had the CD set growing still wish I had it in all honesty

I love it. On renting an audio recording of this, I'd only find an abridged recording that the author did himself from my local library.

Stories like this make me happy and sad.
I adore Eric Idle and Roald Dahl's "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" was a delight to listen to, thank you.
Also John Cleese narrated a Roald Dahl book once
Thinking about it Augustus Gloop and his parents remind me of the Dursleys from Harry Potter.
Eric Idle would make a fantastic Willie Wonka.
I simply love this. Eric Idol really knows how to narrate and read a book.
Why does Mrs. Gloop's "Help! Murder! Police!" line remind me that I've been blocked on Wikipedia by some stupid administrators?
Eric Idle would have made an excellent Willy Wonka.
Agree
Agreed. [after Violet is turned into a blueberry.] Idol as Wanka: Now you see the importance of extensive testing.
He actually wanted to play Wonka in the 1971 film, so did all the other members of Monty Python.
Cool. My top three members of that group are John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Erich Idle.
I don’t think anyone could play wonka better then wilder but I think Eric should get a shot to play wonka in a sequel or something
What a hoot!
I love how Eric Idle makes the Salts American in this version. My own nationality 😂
Noooo I want an oompah loompah now in the English accent is the cake with the cheery on top

Now THIS is the reading everyone should hear.
So this is the real version I’d warrant!

I wonder if Eric idle reads Charlie and the great glass elevator
I still find it funny that Veruca Salt is named Veruca because a veruca is literally the name of a type of fungal foot wart
That's literally the joke
😂
Incorrect, it is the hair on a Wart, and it isn't limited to the foot. It can appear anywhere.

Well, dark chocolate actually does have a lot of health benefits. So you're technically right.

Lol
thank you for this upload. i'm grateful for it.
And yet so many are against the Burton movie version, despite its most accurate to the book
Because Johnny Depp was a fruitcake in it and it sucks. It's more accurate but it takes more than being accurate to make a good movie.
So nice 🎉
