Great video. I saw Benny Greb simply flip an unused head over and place it on top of a snare drum head to achieve instant fat, low snare sounds. You don't even need to touch a tuning lug, and when you want to return to the original tuning, just lift the snare head back off and it's back to normal. Great for drummers who need a fat snare for a few songs, but not the entire set.

Another great vid! You are dead balls on!!! I would like to note that while i was doing these experiments even before i saw these vids, I noticed that one top head lug being well off actually gave an incredible sound! I guess it caused a "wallet/rag/ damping effect. This deep tuning vid is excellent. I LOVE a snare that has tom power and not just a snap/pop sound.
Great Video...I finally found somebody else who likes low fat tuning on steel/brass snare drums. I came up with my own dampening product and it really helps with overtone control...but keeps it open and fat!
The only tip I would add onto your advice is to use two drum keys at once and tune the opposing lugs together. Like you said with your guitar string analogy, it keeps the change in tension even across the "string" if you loosen or tighten both ends equally and at the same time

A cool effect that I like is to take that same towel / handkerchief and flatten it out and lay it over the batter head. It gives a super muffled vintage-y sound. More of an effect, but still pretty cool sometimes!

Yep, I'd have to agree. Low/broad snare sounds like this definitely don't throw the sound in a large club the way something with more midrange bite would. The combination of a large club and no mics on the kit really limits things :) Cheers!
Thanks. I'm not a drummer, but this explains why I can't get the snare sound I like from my virtual drum software. Changing the pitch of a virtual snare is not the same thing as what you demonstrated in this video.
For a great snare sound in an orchesta setting back in High School, some of the people in percussion used wallets. Wallets can even be good for a tight funky track if you like that sound.
tmaddrummer Hey there! Honestly I think it’s debatable but I haven’t noticed a discernible difference at all. The weight of mounting hardware and toms could stifle some resonance but it’s not something I really worry about. I have however put tape or cloth in the mounting hole to stifle air escaping from it when the toms aren’t mounted and I’m using a full front head to maximize the tone. Hope that helps!!

Man, I realy whant to say I've been learning a lot with your videos. I play drums for more then 20 years now. For most of these time I've been playing a verry tight snare sound. I got bored of it. I was looking so mush for a diferent sound, this vintage electronic sound and at the time so actual, coming from bands like Jungle. I have to say I manage to get the sound from my piccolo just before I found your video. Gheting the right low point of tension is not that easy, imagine in a piccolo :). But yes, its there, its so good and confortable and smooth. Now, the strugle is: thecnicians! They seam not to understant what we are poiting to in terms of sound tibre. And eaven other drummers. Man, just one of this days a guy came to play a couple of songs and ruined a week of work to tune my snare where I needed... baaaa. Any way, just to say a Big Thanks here from Portugal. Obrigado!!

The head itself can make a difference - an Evans EC Reverse dot or a Remo CS White Dot would help with fatness …of course, the control ring in this video has a similar effect

Absolutely. The degree of tension can effect how much/how long the wires sing after the initial strike as well as effecting how bright or dark the wires sound to the listener. In my experience, low snare-side head=dark, trashy wire sound and then as you increase tension the wires will find a nice equilibrium with the drum and start to speak more smoothly. As you go higher and higher, the wires will sound brighter and brighter until the snare-side head chokes out. If I have the option, I will also sometimes choose wires based on what kind of tuning scheme i'm going for, be it 42-strand for a low pillowy sound, or maybe 16-strand or cable-snares for a super high-tuned scenario where articulation is the primary concern. Hope that helps!
I refer anyone who has a 10 lug snare drum to Udo Mashoff. He has the ultimate snare tuning trick that doesn't suck like this kind of tuning. Udo Mashoff, 'the best snare tuning trick ever'. You are seriously missing out if you don't watch it. I can replicate it in minutes, no wank factor.
You definitely need to double check when buying snares which type! I only buy “funny” snares when I’m doing comedy shows, I personally prefer a serious snare for flexibility..... then people know you mean business!! I like the sound you created above, I would use that mostly for studio work, but for live gigs my arms would get soo tired 😓 after an hour of playing, especially when I eventually do a drum solo, hence tighter skin less inertia = more speed - less energy expended 🤔👍🇬🇧
At around 6 mins you lower the reso to help control the top head ringing so much, any idea whats going on physics wise between the heads before and after this step ?
Tricky to say definitively, but my theory is that a higher snare-side head will behave like a trampoline and feed more vibration into the batter head, resulting in a more prolonged ring. I find it primarily an issue in situations like this where the batter head is tuned low. Same as with a tom (or floor tom especially), the resonant or snare-side head really does behave like a kind of tone-control for the batter head and the overall sound of the drum, especially where length-of-note is concerned.
if two sources are tuned close to each other or in harmonic ratios, ie fifth, third, te waves from the two sources will interact with each other. If the peaks of the waves are close to matching the volume increases or if the peaks of one wave match with the valeys of the other, the volume decreases. So the two heads of the drum interact with each other

Can’t say that we’ve listened to the new 5FDP album but do keep in mind that, when listening to and working to emulate fully engineered drum sounds in an acoustic only environment, you’re listening to close-mix’d, EQ’d, compressed sounds that may be supported with samples or even samples themselves. You can tune for a pitch and sustain similar to what you’re hearing but it’s borderline impossible to accurately reproduce a produced drum sound in a fully analog environment.

Hello Cody, my name is Michael. First let me thank you for your great YT channel, I´ve discovered you 2 days ago, watching Ep.16 right now. Great and serious content, big thumbs up! I am quite into gear, tunning, giging and stuff and few days ago I´ve purchased old Dennis Chambers signature snare 14x6,5 5mm maple shell with rings and an idea came across my mind. I tried to tune it medium low, but the shell didn´t respond for the "fat" frequencies as well as my other wooden snare drums, which are thicker in their shells. Even that DC signature is quite high-end drum and it should cover the whole tunning range, it feels the best quite cranked up - as usual as Dennis used it the most. Do you think, that less material means higher frequency respond (like bass X guitar). In the oposite in the case of cymbals less material in the same size means lower fundamental tone. With regards to your question, thinner shells will typically have a lower fundamental frequency that is present with less force needing to be applied due to the lesser mass. This video! I fell into the trap of using a big fat snare drum. Don't get me wrong, they have their place, but they don't and should not replace a very well tuned, fat snare for a couple reasons: 1) its easy to just slap one on and let it do the tuning for you. I've seen so many people solve bad tuning with bfsd or e-rings and you don't get the best sound you can get! 2) The big fat snare drum product may drop the pitch of the whole snare, but I found myself disappointed that it also took away a lot of the body of the snare sound and decreased the volume dramatically. This doesn't fly when you need that powerful, throaty back beat. Use these products wisely guys!!
I watch a lot of these videos, but I really do wish there was more playing of what ever drum(s) you're demonstrating. I get what you're trying to do, but I guarantee the bulk of your subscribers would appreciate a more realistic play-through. It would give us a more contextual glimpse into the tone that you've achieved, and would also be much more entertaining. I hope this comment comes across as constructive, as I do enjoy the channel.
@@seanmichel3401 Death Punch has a pretty heavily mixed drum sound. Their first album has dry drums, everything after that had lots of compression + some gated reverb to beef up the snare. Listen to The Way Of The Fist and compare the drum sounds. First album is more true-to-life, despite the triggers.

I was doing that when I was 12. I didn't need anyone to show me either. There's really nothing remarkable about it. It's just called using your brain.

Try the mastenoff or some German type name method for tuning. Sorry can't remember the name. It's similar to what you mentioned.

12:30 is like the perfect metal snare sound for me. Percussive and short but with a nice snare sizzle to back up the low concussive thud.
I find It awful, I crank mine super high. I guess it's personal preference

A tension key makes this so easy. Set them top heads to a 1 and the bottom to 2 and that is it. 😉

Can’t say that we’ve listened to the new 5FDP album but do keep in mind that, when listening to and working to emulate fully engineered drum sounds in an acoustic only environment, you’re listening to close-mix’d, EQ’d, compressed sounds that may be supported with samples or even samples themselves. You can tune for a pitch and sustain similar to what you’re hearing but it’s borderline impossible to accurately reproduce a produced drum sound in a fully analog environment.

Hello Cody, my name is Michael. First let me thank you for your great YT channel, I´ve discovered you 2 days ago, watching Ep.16 right now. Great and serious content, big thumbs up!
I am quite into gear, tunning, giging and stuff and few days ago I´ve purchased old Dennis Chambers signature snare 14x6,5 5mm maple shell with rings and an idea came across my mind. I tried to tune it medium low, but the shell didn´t respond for the "fat" frequencies as well as my other wooden snare drums, which are thicker in their shells. Even that DC signature is quite high-end drum and it should cover the whole tunning range, it feels the best quite cranked up - as usual as Dennis used it the most. Do you think, that less material means higher frequency respond (like bass X guitar). In the oposite in the case of cymbals less material in the same size means lower fundamental tone. Whats your thoughts about it?

With regards to your question, thinner shells will typically have a lower fundamental frequency that is present with less force needing to be applied due to the lesser mass. What was the pitches of the two heads in the end?
This video! I fell into the trap of using a big fat snare drum. Don't get me wrong, they have their place, but they don't and should not replace a very well tuned, fat snare for a couple reasons:
1) its easy to just slap one on and let it do the tuning for you. I've seen so many people solve bad tuning with bfsd or e-rings and you don't get the best sound you can get!
2) The big fat snare drum product may drop the pitch of the whole snare, but I found myself disappointed that it also took away a lot of the body of the snare sound and decreased the volume dramatically. This doesn't fly when you need that powerful, throaty back beat.
Use these products wisely guys!!
And an O ring to mute the ringing of sustain.

I get what you're trying to do, but I guarantee the bulk of your subscribers would appreciate a more realistic play-through. It would give us a more contextual glimpse into the tone that you've achieved, and would also be much more entertaining. I hope this comment comes across as constructive, as I do enjoy the channel.

@@seanmichel3401 Death Punch has a pretty heavily mixed drum sound. Their first album has dry drums, everything after that had lots of compression + some gated reverb to beef up the snare. Listen to The Way Of The Fist and compare the drum sounds. First album is more true-to-life, despite the triggers.
