For those of you saying “I wish I had a 30k roll”. Truth is, you can build a roll this big within 1-2 years if you work super hard. And yes, you are going to have to grind , maybe 40-60 hrs per week. But if you want to get there, you have to put in a lot of work just like anything else in life.
While it’s true everyone was a fish back then, Alec had the same amount of information as everyone else. So it doesn’t make it any easier for him or any of us.
Btw, a 30k roll is very attainable to build in the 1-2 and 2-5. And if you can’t beat those games consistently, then you need to fix your game

At the time you made a run a pro their were thousands of mediocre players with a 50k bankroll on pokerstars and full tilt. Some of the younger players say born from 1989 and on were young when the real crap hit the fan. In 47 and playing as a 34 year old on full tilt I literally built a 78k bankroll. It started as a 50$ deposit. Won a 2$ wsop for 2800 and I played like an idiot but managed to win a 215$ for a cool 42k then a Sunday million 7th for 68k and there it was. 20k cash out then managed to felt it off in a cocaine induced bender. Damn that was fun!

Also, do you enjoy the 25/50 at LTB more than Poker America? Even though, there were no professionals the money were huge, kinda like PAD back in the days.

I never inherited any money. And all of it was built at poker. I'm not saying that's what everyone should do, no. In fact I would honest NOT recommend people do that. But for the few people that DO want to build their bankroll through poker, I help them do it in a fiscally responsible, profitable and effective way.

You didn't comprehend my question. In today's poker environment, building a bankroll up to 1m plus is much more difficult than back in 2006. It has nothing to do with luck.

Hey man! Love your videos! Where did you live/play in Aus? Do you think if you had to start from 10k all over again in the current poker conditions you could grind your roll up to seven figures again? Where would you start if so? I was very interested in trying to play professionally and trying to grind my way up stakes until I watched some interviews with Dan Colman and Igor who seem to think that NLHE will be 'solved' soon. As in it will just be GTO play vs other GTO play. In your opinion, does this just create more of an incentive to get better at game selection and perhaps live poker or is it an inevitable dooms day? Good question. I think I could but it would be a lot harder, obviously. I do think it may be more difficult to play soon, but the truth is all you need is a game with a few fish and I think they will always love to play because it still involves chance, luck and gambling. One thing comstant with advice. 1) bankroll. Bankroll bankroll.. 2) cash games,aint heard anyone yet say or advise a living off tournaments(but play both not just cash). So with that being said all across the board from every poker pro, its a place to start.

I'm 18, love playing poker. Find myself to be pretty good at it. Win all the home games in my town with my buddy, wether it's tourney or cash.
Started playing home games at cousins house who is 25 and has been playing for 10+ years. Him and his buddies all have been playing. We go there and still make good $.
I have 800$ to my name. Alot of it comes from poker winnings. Only started tracking it all last week.
My question is, how much $ should I be buying into cash games for ? 1/2$ is 60$-500$ buy in. I'm 3-2 at the casino buying in as a 60$ short stack.
I buy in for 60$ and once I get around 120$ I start playing regularly.

HI, 1st off, I would play any live freerolls available and online for that matter as every little score helps when your BR is low.(any pro'mo's also). 2nd play very tight to try and lower variance-create a non player based opening range for every position at the table (this changes when you get to know the players). 3rd when you are building comfortably keep 25 buy ins for live games-online around 60 should do depending on how many tables you play. 4th your only 18 so just try to learn as much as possible, plenty free info out there. I'm not the best player but still learning everyday. only losing year was 2011 and that's when I learnt to play. GL buddy wish you all the best.

Luke braga Luke, keep playing in your local home games, and keep crushing the games you have been beating for awhile. Work your bankroll to 2000. Then if you start trying the casino, buy in for 200$, and only play that much per trip. 100$ is a decent win, and 3-4x your buy in, is phenomenal. Book winners, and know when to quit. If you start running bad, stick to the home games for awhile. Save your bankroll for poker. Without your bankroll you do not have an income. Don't spend it.

I know you've had probably at least 50 people commenting this but I have to echo it just to further drive the point home. Your video title implies you are going to tell people how you built up your bankroll but then you start off the video saying, "I had about 20 or 30 thousand" dollars to start with. Most people coming to this video want to know how you built up that 20 to 30 thousand bucks in the first place! That's like having a video called, "How I built my house" and starting the video off with, "I've got this house and then I did this landscaping and decorated the interior like this..." The bottom line is that if you were going to tell people how you took your $20k bankroll and grew it into a $100k bankroll you should have called the video, "How I grew $20,000 into $100,000 playing poker."
$20-$30k is rather reasonable starting point, playing microstakes is an obvious waste of time. He was 18 or 19 so it probably came from his parents, but for anyone 25+ collecting 30k is rather easy. Most ppl make at least 50k, just bunker down and live as if you only made 20k that year. Now you have your bankroll.

cash games have not been less volatile in my experience, but my god I wish they were for me. I do not understand cash games at all, and it frustrates me.
In cash games, basically raise out when you want to play.

Hello, Alec. Quick question, is there any way to play poker online in the US for real money? Every time I've tried, the sites say I cannot play for real money from where I am. I'm sure there's a way, I just haven't dug into it yet. Any tips?
I've searched here and there, but I cannot tell what sites are legit. So many of them just look like scams to me, like I'd just be playing against a bunch of russian hackers who can see my cards or a site that will river my opponent the nuts every time I go all in. That is a huge argument for making online poker legal in the US, so we can know it's regulated and legit. Anyway, if anyone knows of a site that offers a good, fair game and will work in the US, I'd appreciate it.
You can play on 888 Poker but only in certain states. Otherwise, the rest seem like a grey zone. I don't play personally but I know many who do. I just don't want to get involved really to be honest.

Seeing this comment a lot. If you're still at home and not working, you're an idiot. Best chance to save a roll to get started in life. Go wait tables and hustle, deliver great service, your tip income should be enough in a year or so to bankroll 1/2 NL easy. Problem is not many want to work anymore.

Alec and UA-cam guys, I wanna know what about the ideia to build like 15K USD Bankroll (Im brazilian and a reasonable salary per month here is like 500USD), and invest huge in something safe to give you every month this reasonable money per month and you play safe with the variance. Or should I risk the bankroll (with the management obviously) and pick the variance (I play online tournaments). Sorry my bad english. Did I get my thought throw? Thanks!

In short, I'd recommend to be aggressive when you have a very small BR, and slowly be more conservative as it grows (since money has diminishing marginal return).

Honestly Alec it sounds like what I'm doing. Grinding cash and taking shots in torunaments. Problem is its been years and I havent binked any tournaments for serious money like you have. It sounds to me like thats how a lot of pros got their bankroll to play 25-50 cash games plus. I dont think you can really do it grinding 2-5 or 5-10 cash.
Hey Dan, you totally can. 5/10 is plenty to make a good living, and in fact I know many pros and some of my students are making $50-$125 per hour at those stakes. That's plenty to live a good life, especially when you combine it with the flexibility poker allows. Sure a tournament score helps, but it only expedites your growth, it's not your foundation. Hang in there man, keep grinding. Patience. It'll come...

Yeah you can make a living but I'm saying to be able to play high stakes you really need to bink a tournament to really get a big bankroll like you did which is needed for high stakes. What i kidna think anyways. Its pretty damn hard saving up a million dollars or even half that grinding 2-5 or 5-10.

Best way is to satillite for a big one..or play tournaments..play tournaments that pays maybe 1-2 k first prize..even if you finish 3rd for 500. use that to enter a 500 tourny..if you lose..start over...its the only way man..ive done it and took me a while..working on the hpt as we speak..feel free to facebook me..clinton bordelon

Probably this thing known as a JOB. I knew a guy that waited tables at Red Lobster during his summers while in college, he'd saved up 75K by the time he graduated. Work, you should try it.

Good question. I didn't set this up until later in my career (big mistake), but it varies on so many factors. Too hard to say.

Please Simonas, I've made money at poker every year since 2003. I do enjoy making videos and yes, I am turning this into a business, but it's not because I can't win at poker anymore, it's because I've played for 12+ years and this is an evolution for me.
I do think people can and will make money at poker long term even in today's market. I coach many clients and have many users in my programs who do so themselves.
I'm not denying I benefit from these videos financially but the truth is I made way more in one year of poker than I have in my business and I still travel the world playing poker even today.
Autistic Sheep I pay my bills with money I take off of players from 1-2. It's not for everyone. Your average player can't fold strong holdings at low level. I'm at 58$ hour. I'm not sure, a lot would be circumstantial. I knew I would always find an esoteric path - working a 9-5 just never appealed to me, but I probably would have found a different way to play poker (staked, etc.) since that was a huge passion. I did have some downswings and low points, but always worked hard and bounced back. A little luck at the right time never hurt either :)

I won at online poker. Actually, when I was 18 I think my peak was closer to $100,000. By 19 I had made close to $1,000,000.
Sure Alec but to a lot of people 20k IS a bankroll. Don't forget that over 50% of the US population are categorically poor.
At the time he won that, the boom of poker...low level game were extremely easy. Today they are grinded to death by educated players. You have to chose your game or you are ruining your efforts for a 50/50 chance.
yes big thing is most of pro players come from money...other got lucky and one a big tournament..someone has to win...and when a big tourny is won..they get alot of sponsors...as far as a poor man,....slim odds...i got lucky..i play tournys only and have been blessed

Why doesn't this guy tell the TRUE story. He build his bankroll by running WAY above EV. Anyone who comes 1st for 250k in a FTOPS massive fucking field and is a pretty decent player, that is the MARK in being able to have a really good poker career for most and having the comfort to build and manage a bankroll, people don't realize that. Majority of players have such egos and think they are gods gift to poker but there are plenty and I'm talking plenty of players that are on there level or are even better but don't run as good and don't clip those 6 figure scores and that's why how much you won in poker doesn't define you as a player. I'm sick of people thinking there are beasts in poker. You're either good or you aren't and if you are good it matters how well you run in the right tourneys. Cash games (deep cash games) have a lot more skill involved but for the most part so many notable players that you see playing all the main events across the world are horrible. They god ran a couple tourneys got fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to take some shots and sometimes those that run good continues elsewhere. Good tourney players put in volume and manage well and have control and are always running deep in tourneys, just because you god run the right tourney and win a substantial amount of $ doesn't make you good. I think Alec is intelligent and a pretty good player but he's no better than you're next good player.
Alec, just some constructive criticism. It would help your videos a lot if you refrained from saying "uh" in between your sentences.

You will not build a bank roll on 100 unless you run into a luck unknown...I would tell you to get a bit more money and play a shit load of satillite tournaments that will give you an entry into a big tournament...do many and dont stop..i have been so lucky and blessed with tournys of 2016...feel free to contact me under my facebook..clinton bordelon or clint bordelon..i have two accounts..just remember many people have thousands and start poker and 95 percent will go back to work..we only here of the ones we see...
tehf00n slim chance, unless you have skill and patience, I once got 240 left, then down to 55, made back to 2500 in the same week, playing 40 hrs plus. Try buy in at 100-300 game, play ABC, when you get to 300-400, consider next level, 200-500 game. Adjust accordingly, each level plays differently. You can cycle between these two level and build up experience, confidence and bankroll. That was 3 weeks ago for me, now I'm at 4K. (Btw, I had 3 years of playing experience, but my game has ups and downs, plus the bill, and other distractions, why I'm still working on building a healthy bankroll. However, I think I can go for 2k/week with my current skill set, build it up, and plan bigger for the future)
that same fake ass story i heard about well known pros depositing $50 online and never looking back is a crock of shit. Started with Dwan and everyone else made up the same story. Only a dream will allow you to deposit $50 and net you millions playingpoker Just doesnt happen
