Australian homelessness soars amid national housing insecurity

- Sky News host Paul Murray says Australia has a higher homeless population now due to housing insecurity than at the census which back then was the “biggest number” the country “ever had”.
“70 per cent of people say they have experienced a rent increase that is up by seven per cent compared to this time last year, 19 per cent said their lease had been terminated or not renewed,” Mr Murray said.
“Australia has more homeless people today than it did at the census and at the census it was the biggest number we had ever had.”

I’m American living in Australia for 2 decades. I’m working in bank for the past 18 years up to now. I can confirm, majority of Australians are big spenders, borrows a lot and have little to none of savings or emergency funds. I always think on how Aussies will survive if economy went bad. Now that it’s happening, I’m not surprised at all. I know this day will come. I hope this difficult time will be a great learning lesson to everyone that it’s not about the money, it’s the mindset and discipline on managing your own finances
This is true. I used to know an Aussie who lost her white collar job and she was stressing out that her and her boyfriend could "only" have a $20 lunch budget daily and would not be able to buy extra snacks and drinks. "We'll be eating mince every night" she cried. They both made over $80K a year, I made $30K and I ate better because I cook everything from scratch. And she did not even leave her mothers home until she was 36 to boot. I know Aussies with no kids who eat out 3 tims a day, smoke, go drinking every weekend, buy $800 concert tickets, take overseas trips but claim they cannot afford a second-hand car. No, they just put priorities on luxuries vs necessities.
You think it’s normal to pay a third of your wage to just having a roof?

My advice is don't leave and quit paying citing unlivabke conditions. Apply for your bond back yourself online and let it go to dispute. Stick your heels in and save as much as you can in the time it takes them to throw u out. It will take them months. Don't go until the sheriff drags u out snd don't answer the door to anyone. If he changes the locks, that's illegal. Break in as it's your house and u can stay there indefinitely by law
Thousands and thousands of of people commenting on how bad this government is and yet we can’t get rid of them The average intelligent Aussie knows we are in very deep trouble Our future and our children’s future being destroyed with all this.wrong migration pouring into our country Aussies suffering
Just have to work hard to get them out coming next election. LNP does not have the union's millions...the rotten green preferences both allowing a woeful corrupt Labor party in. LNP needs lots of donations and our Aussie Elon Musk 🥴
Where are they supposed to go? Imagine having a rental market that actually existed let alone affordable!
You call it national homeless insecurities are you kidding me
it is reptilian humor.
hope they raise rates even higher sick of all these speculators buying all the property
That’s because all the rentals, were turned into Airbnb’s there’s no smaller housing for sale everything is ridiculously overpriced and the inflation on living expenses has gone through the roof.
Its like this here in the US everywhere! 😢
And they keep bringing in people from overseas....
Will add.
A house behind me is up for sale.
In 2010 it cost $209,000.
Now it's starting price is $1.3 million. It's rundown and an old government commission house. There's no parking on property. It's crazy.
No wonder we’re all so depressed
Australians celebrate Gallipoli. "We shall not forget".
What a joke.
Now they let the people they faught against into their country, give them free handouts and let their own people live on the streets. What an absolute plonker of a system. Those people died for nothing. Lets not forget this joke.
I have recently travelled from Townsville down South. The amount of tent cities I saw was very disturbing. Lots of free camp areas had permanent tents and caravans set up. Caravan Parks had permanent residents. What has happened to our country is heartbreaking
ALL governments have been kicking this can down the road for decades.
Agree
I would have thought people would go out and protest about things like this. Not go out and protest for Palestine that has nothing to do with Australia. Shows me something not normal about some people in Australia.
Albo is a narc and he does not give 2 hoots
368 billion for submarines
That would be a lot of houses, better spent on new technology instead of cold war technology 🤦
430million for a yes vote
I pay 70% of my income to rent!! As a single mother it is not a pleasant existence - and that is all it is, an existence. I am certainly not living!
I feel for u. The sad reality is the majority of renters out there paying off their landlords investment property mortgages are poor single mothers with kids
Two weeks to flatten the curve... 4 years later.....
Sell your house but then pay the same as your mortgage in rent.
Housing is a right
Very embarrassing for Australians. One of the richest countries and cannot provide housing for everyone. The Saudi or brunei royal family takes much better care of its citizens.
“Dipping into their savings “.
What savings??????
Disgraceful. The RBA suggesting to people sell your home.
Trump is our only hope in the U.S….again.
👍 yes
Well, if he loses the election in the US he said that he will leave US. We can bring him here to this paradise in the Pacific, to actually run the place like a real business. Yes, I bet he will froth at the mouth like an agonal nursing home patient waiting to pass to the other side, with that proposition !!
@@sergiozammel8261oh serious? He said he’d leave?
@@sergiozammel8261 I’ll come and bring my production company/build the economy, mate? Where are you located?
@@Daniel-ld7xs Yep, he said it. And he's right ,as they will hound him into the ground.
Sell your home to newly arrived Indian economic migrants, i dont think so.
So over this government. They have absolutely no idea how hard people are doing it.
Be prepared for a crash
When one lives beyond his means ....
Yeah a great opportunity to buy up more assets
Anarchy seems very appealing atm..
Just look at corporate profits. There's your source for inflation
Imagine if houses depreciated like cars as they wore out.
@@axle.australian.patriotthey do, if the land value doesn't change
@@christopherpekel6096 lol, yet to see that trend.
@@axle.australian.patriot did you know that land in certain suburbs is often worth less when it has an older house on it as opposed to no house at all?
The house is depreciating, people want to knock them down and build new
Its only the land going up, the physical house depreciates
@@christopherpekel6096 Seriously! Land just goes up by 300% in one year? Wake up!
And they say the “great replacement” is just a conspiracy
Politicians get pay rises, Albo got $200,000 pay rise since he was PM could have helped this crisis, his overspending is whats causing the inflation/cost of living
Governments could reduce energy costs easily by getting the domestic reservation policy in order. But they won’t! They’re too concerned with preserving their future mining industry careers than being statesman like for their voters!
Our forefathers and Anzacs would be asking how we let this happen.
So a home even if you work full time is a privilege not a right.
Both sides of government have failed us.
Too late to sell it now. Should have seen this coming 12 months ago at least. These poor people are now stuck and they will almost die to pay them off all to have them taken in the end anyway.
hong kong and singapore never had a problem in housing for tiny country. Australia is to large and yet housing is a problem for years. the answer is infront of them they just dont want to fix it cuase hosuing agents are getting more money.
I 100% bet you have no understanding of the geography or the social structures of China and also Singapore .. it’s a lot different to Australia .. and you would be 100% wrong if you believe they have figured it out
Don't blame housing agents solely as this would not be accurate.
A large portion of the economy in Australia is tied up in housing related activities. Some of this is to bring in money from other countries, either to "wash" it or as a vehicle for already rich people to invest part of their money. It'd be tied further into Australia's national interest to keep this going -- i.e. if you were elected to change it you'd be briefed on why this would cause disaster in some way and change your mind.
You make a good observation that there is huge land and it makes no sense at all compared to other countries in the region. It should be very easy to build enough housing for everyone and then some at low cost. BTW, Japan is another similar first world country that also doesn't have this problem as they build more housing on their tiny land, 70% of which is unsuitable for housing. In Australia, virtually all land near cities is habitable without going to any great length for reclaiming land from the sea and such.
Scrap negative gearing at the very least it will scare off the Real Estate speculators!
I’m sorry but if your mortgage eats up half of your wage, and your interest is 6-7%, you shouldn’t have bought the house. Interest rates are still very low. 1.99% mortgages are not normal and it’s how we got into this mess.
It’s not just the rates bud , it’s also the cost of living crisis, usually if you are making payments, you can get by in a decent economy, but everything has gone up from last year , electricity, gas , rent , land rates by 35% in Victoria, car rego , fuel’s been up for some years now , food , medical prescriptions, and everything thing else you can think of.
Add to that , the dick head prime minister is bringing in more people from overseas , when we don’t have the housing or the infrastructure for the people that are already here .
Hospitals are over worked and under resourced, as are our ambulances, and police , even our defences are under staffed.
If government has one single thing to do , it is to be a caretaker for the people and the country.
And Labor has made a right royal cock up of it .
urgh...another..."rates arent that high, we had 18% 20 years ago" comment. All ego with no actual knowledge of the situation and difference between now and then.
1.99% mortgages are not normal and it’s how we got into this mess.
Agree but a house is not a jetski, people buy them because they need a place to live. It's not exorbitant spending when you can't afford the mortgage repayments to your tiny, dilapidated house.
@@JohnSmith-pn1vv I’m not talking about the people who bought a modest home…im talking about the people that maxed out their borrowing capacity when rates were low to keep up with the Jones’. I know many people who earn less than 75k who were borrowing beyond their means. The government is not going to save you this time. They’ve all had to sell.
@@Deano00777 I earn less than $75k and I attempted a few years ago to get a home loan. The max they'd lend me was $300k. When I went looking suddenly all the prices were out of my range. And if I had borrowed $300k I would've been maxing out my mortgage payments. Now I'm stuck renting and paying almost half my income on rent. So I don't win either way. This country is now designed for the wealthy.
