If anyone is interested in the data collected for this video, please find below a link to a Google Drive folder where you can find two CSV files, one for countries and another for Canadian/U.S. regions. All of the sources for numbers quoted directly in the video are listed in the description but not for those in the CSV files so please note the following: where possible, official government estimates or authoritative sources (IUCN, WWF etc…) were used and if not available, a consensus from multiple other sources. I have avoided using figures from others who aggregated this data as I couldn’t determine where those numbers came from. Also, the numbers in the country CSV for U.S. and Canadian black/brown bear populations are the totals from the regional CSV not a source found online. Countries/regions with a confirmed but unknown bear population show a “?” rather than a blank cell. I hope you find this as fascinating as I did :)

You don't know anything about bears
I have to be honest, half the time I wasn't even listening and was just looking at all those cute bears. They are so fluffy and cuddly and would probably tear me to shreds if I get into their way but I still love them.
I'm happy to see that so many bears are prevalent worldwide. It's also crazy that they were even more widespread until recently: Grizzly bears ranged as far south as the mountains of Mexico, European brown bears lived across the British Isles, Syrian brown bears were found deep into the Levant, and many brown bears lived in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa
Especially here in North America it's a shame to hear that Grizzlies were wiped out from California and Mexico but it's good to know that they are doing relatively well in the far north in Canada and Alaska
Yeah, I once looked at the historic ranges for some of the largest predators. In North America Grizzlys and Pumas used to be present just about anywhere between the East and West- coasts.
Over in Eurasia Lions were present everywhere along the Mediterranean coast, the Balkan, along the Black Sea and many parts of the Middle East up to most of India.
Tiger were also present in most places between the Black Sea and eastern edge of the Eurasian mainland. Being notably absent from terrain at high altitude, probably due to a lack of forests.
So lions, tigers and even leopards once shared a significant part of their habitat.
I was lucky to grow up in the Northwest Territories in one of the few places where Grizzly, Polar and Black Bear habitats overlapped. 😊🇨🇦

As someone who owns a trailer in north central ontario i can confirm there are tons of bears here. We had a mother with cubs come through our trailers/cottages at stoney lake this year.

Me too! I lived in a small town where the train track runs right along the main road and the Rocky Mountaineer train used to pass through there, I can only imagine how breathtaking that journey would be!

Bears in Ontario I suspect are higher than people realise. We have seen bears get into the fringes of the GTA. It isn't really bear country and yet they have adapted to farm land and hiding in the ravines and woodlots
Fun fact. In Churchill Manitoba Canada it is illegal to lock your vehicle when parked in public areas, as polar bear encounters are so prevalent that people on foot my need to take safe shelter in them.
small update the map of brown bear ranges, one was recently seen in northeastern montana! its the furthest east a brown bear has been seen in more than than a century as they used to inhabit the prairies here but obviously due to much of those grasslanda being used for agriculture they got pushed further and further west. very exciting bear news though!

North Carolina has a black bear population of at least 20K bears, I saw no mention of this population. Many other states have large populations of black bears, they are very good at living close to agricultural areas

There’s a wildlife refuge around 5hrs from where I live that u could see Black Bears in the wild year round 😊 I even encountered a mother and 2 cubs on a tree on my last visit!

Living in BC, this tracks honestly. Black bears are so common here they're viewed more like overgrown raccoons.
This is fun. As a Canadian, it's fun to take my guesses about whether we or the US have more overall bears. My logic was simply, "Canada has more land and fewer people in that land -- More empty space therefore more bears." In the end, I'm right, but it's striking how the US manages to equal Canada in black bears, which I'd expect to be the most common bear in both countries. Maybe that speaks to the adaptability of those bears. Maybe they manage to live closer to people in the US without overmuch damage to their population numbers. I feel like there's an interesting research story there, since you'd expect antagonism with the human world to even out population, if that were the case. But no, it seems not, which makes me wonder if there are a lot of mostly unseen happy wild black bears living peaceably proximate to people in the US, possibly becoming more flexible to enjoy less antagonistic cold weather, or lured by some other advantage of those areas not available in Canada. Am I theorizing smart here? Is this how others would think about it?
Simple. Grizzly bears were hunted to extinction in the lower 48 states, but black bears were left alone. Brown bears are pretty adaptable, their only weakness is bullets.
@@TaylorUmongusHasBlack bears were not left alone. They were eliminated from much of the eastern US, but were left alone in the west for the most part. Black bear populations are rising in the US, so it will surpass Canada eventually. Black bears can live close to humans without much issue, unlike brown bears which do not do well in close contact to humans.

It's likely many of the nominal subspecies aren't valid, particularly of the NA black bear. A lot of them are based on irrelevant color variations, such as the cinnamon bear, which can be born in the same litter with normal black specimens.

Great video. Just one note, sun bears were recently spotted in southern China, although the population is likely less than 10 so it wouldn’t make to much of a difference

When you did your survey of Canadian Grizzly Bears you didn’t include the province of Alberta which has a significant Grizzly population. I suggest you do your calculations again and include Alberta in Canada’s numbers. I would be willing to bet Canada will then exceed the US in numbers.
If you look at his heat map and listen to the numbers he is quoting for each nation it is fairly clear that he is counting the roughly 1k Grizzly bears in alberta. I'm not sure why he doesn't show the counts on the map for them or the non-alaskan states but I do believe they are counted.
When I was 4 years old, me & my family went to visit other family in Sweden (were from New York City but all out family is Swedish with the majority living in Sweden, & we spoke swedish at home), one of my family members had a cabin in the north/central part of the country, only forests around.
Anyway, when we were there, me & my sister (age 7) were playing alone by a lake. An adult grizzly bear came by us, & with us growing up in the city with no knowledge about wildlife, I went right up to the bear to pet it. I touched it’s head but it walked away.
My sister took a picture with one of those disposable camera with my hand about to pet the bears head, otherwise no one would ever believe this story lol. I’ll post my instagram name since I have that pic on there if anyone wants proof lol.
Even though I easily could’ve died, I still remember that moment & it was special & a fantastic memory.
As a montana resident there are significantly more grizzlies here than any of the estimates state. I know muitiple people who have gotten grizzlies on trail camera's nowhere near where they are supposed to be. That, along with the incredibly dense and vast wester side of the state, make estimates pointless.
I know what you mean. Last estimation for Alberta grizzly bear population was in the 800 range. There is an Albertan who has a Tiktok channel showing trail cam photos of grizzly bears in the Grande Prairie area yet the experts say that they don't have a population there and that it is random "visits". Someone isn't being honest.
I lived in the Sierra Nevada mountains for several years, where Black Bears and abundant. They’re both totally cool and kind of scary simultaneously. I had to set up “noise traps” to keep them out of the chicken coop and trash cans.
I am really proud to be romanian due to the fact that I really appreciate the fact that Romania has the largest and highest populations and densities of brown bears than any other european country out there, as they are founded primarely in Carpathian mountainous areas near the dark wilderness of Transylvania !❤🇷🇴🐻

Canada obviously has more bears than the USA. 90% of Canada is uninhabited. Which means more wilderness for bears.

Canada would have a larger population of black bears, but sadly we have been sending black bear pelts to the Uk for over 200 years now. The pelts are used to make the bearskin hats for 5 regiments of soldiers.

It beats all those nature documentaries on TV, and streaming sites, that have footage from inside of 'wild' animal dens. Like somehow it would have hurt their ratings to have the narrator admit that this bit was filmed in a zoo/animal sanctuary.
Surprisingly you can't get a huge (image in the 80s), professional, running camera, a into a den full of wolf cubs, without the pack attacking, and abandoning it if they can't fight you off.

India has 4 subspecies in which Himalayan brown bear is among one of the world's biggest and sloth bear is only found in India. Sun bears are found in India but they are mostly found in South east asia.
In the past Sun Bears used to be a widespread Bear along with Sloth Bears in India now they are only found in the North-East region

There are 4 types of bear species ranked in terms of diet and what they eat:
Carnivorous: Polar bear and grizzly bear
Omnivorous: American black bear, Asian black bear, brown bear, spectacled bear & sun bear
Insectivorous: Sloth bear
Herbivorous: Giant panda
Nope Brown Bears are Omnivorous there is no term as "Insectivorous" there are two herbivorous Bears which are Pandas and Spectacled Bears the rest 5 Bears are Omnivorous while Polar is the only Carnivorous Bear in the world

They have no clue how many bears are in Canada... it's a well educated guess. It's such a difficult country to navigate within 4 hours drive of civilization...and in many cases even if there were highways up there, you would find bears after driving 35 hours north...

I worked in the bush of Northern British Columbia for decades. I've encountered bears 1000's of times, mostly black bears and only felt threatened once.

Like coyotes, American black bears are found in pretty much all 49 US continental states. (Except, in the case of the bears, perhaps not in a few midwestern states.)

Your maps not 100% accurate there are plenty of Bears in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba and northern Washington and Idaho and without watching your video I can safely say CANADA 🇨🇦 has way way more Bears and other Predators than the US , we don’t allow people to carry guns in our national parks it kinda goes against the whole idea of a Park being a safe space for wildlife unlike the Americans who constantly chirp about never going into the wild woods unarmed lol think about if you banned guns in parks you’d have a lot more animals and a lot less city slickers who think there bushmen
