My dad was career military and was paid once a month, and they shopped in a commissary on base when he got paid. We ate fresh produce pretty much the first week or so, canned after that, and dried food by the end of the month. My mom froze bread and milk. In fact, I thought everyone shook the milk when they got it out of the 'fridge! I grew up on dried beans and cornbread, as well as her amazing, dried fruit pies. When I lived 20 miles out of town, 8 miles down a dirt road, I shopped in much the same way although I also raised chickens for eggs, a hog once a year, and milked two cows all year. My son could drink his weight in fresh milk. We gardened, and I canned food, too. I live in town now and no longer raise farm animals, but I still shop about once a month and cook like my mom.
That takes incredible planning to shop monthly. Impressive!
Well, maybe, but, to me, it means you move from fresh to canned to dried food. It also means adjusting our thinking to some degree and using our pantry as the general store. I do also shop for pantry goods at discount stores, so there's that.
It’s a workable longer term plan.
We have to drive about 30 minutes for discount stores. I always combine grocery shopping with other errands/appointments. I park in a central location & walk to each store, since they're close together. We only stick to basic food; no conveniences.
My recent score was a 5 lb. bag of mangoes, marked down to 99cents!
Got them at the ethnic market.
We ate a couple & put the rest in the freezer. 😊
@@mjrdedhed Wow, great deal! Mangoes are over $1 right now
Great deal!
I have drastically changed the way I shop for groceries since I stopped working and had more time to focus on the trends. I found that I have been able to adapt as the store and products have changed the way they are doing things. for example, this week sausages, chicken burgers, buns, cheese, corn, cabbage, apples and watermelon are on sale so I will be buying those but I will be stocking up on sausages. I will also check my cash back apps to see if they have an offer on the sausages. (Greater Vancouver, Canada)
💚💙
I'm a grocery holic. I go at least 2 times a week and totally over buy. I am going to try and only go once a week and buy minimal as I have a huge supply at home. Probably for more than a year.
I wish you the best on this journey.
❤️💜
The sales papers in my area haven't been good lately. I know my prices, and they have been higher than normal, and the deals have been terrible. I enjoyed watching your grocery haul. Please do more of those. Have a great day!
Same here. Sales have not been sales.
Yes, sales definitely aren't worth being called a sale. I'm here in Maryland.
My son lives there.
I am going to try to do evey 2 weeks . I’m heading back to work. The last thing I want to do is spend my time at the grocery store.
Me too. It is not my favorite thing to do for sure.
For sure shopping is getting trickier, you really need to be on your toes
Yes indeed
@@PenniestoDollars 👍
So true ; why over buy when it’s so few people. I just buy what I need & I no longer go weekly or even by weekly. Thank you for sharing & blessings to you 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Blessings to you to my friend!
We keep some larder stocking money available for when we stumble across a great price then buy in volume. Also, for planned larder purchases at acceptable through great prices. Thursday a week ago we stopped at the bread outlet store on the way home from another mandatory trip outside our area; we plan our grocery, other shopping, and errands around our other mamdatory trips and in particular those our of our immediate area where there are savings but not enough to destination shop. We ended up with 21 bread products for $20 of which two were speciality items at $2/ ea ($4 total). We can't meet that price on local clearance bread racks so only buy freezer stock up amounts at the outlet store; we skip bread when we run out. Weve found better deals on Thursdays so aim for Thursday and in $10 increments because the outlet store has a punch card and punches for every $10 spent. Our bread buying has changed drastically.
Those outlet bread stores are great. Seem to be much less of those type of stores around here anymore.
@@PenniestoDollars Very few in our area anymore too. The number of commercial bakeries have decreased over the past 20 of years too.
I try to only buy meat on sale or marked down. We also try to stay out of the store as much as possible. If we are out of something we will go to the local convenience store or gas station instead of driving 15 miles to a large grocery store. We may pay a bit more but we don’t grab unnecessary purchases since they are way more expensive.
👍👍
I buy what I need, and maybe an extra for the pantry. I only buy extra if it’s a stock up price.
Great plan, Joyce.❤️
I just came from the grocery store, there's a snack that we like to have that has some cheese nuts and cranberries in it. I usually buy the package that's the store brand because it's cheaper and we like it okay. Today I noticed the brand that's more expensive for the same thing was actually cheaper. Normally I wouldn't even look at the more expensive brand I would just grab the store brand. Now I learned to look closer...
That’s a tricky move. Yeah we have to not be in a rush or we might miss those things. Good eye!
Great deal on mayonnaise❤
Thank you. We love Duke’s.
@@PenniestoDollars us too. I'd have to say that we recently got a store brand actually two jars, I'm not really a fan of the taste butt we bought them and we're going to use them. But I'm considering going back to dukes.
My budget supercedes my need to make it worth my while. But if I find a steal of a deal, I'll definately buy it for my food storage either pantry or freezer.
💜
We do live 7 miles to the nearest grocery store and 12 to 15 miles to one of two areas with a variety of shopping opportunities. Time to get there depends upon the time of day, school bus schedules, and traffic; that's a whole different equation. One of our big June '22's resets was to buy fewer skus but more quantity to create a basic larder (fridge, freezer, and pantry shelves of both food and other essentials). We prefer good to excellent comparative prices at the time of purchase but have ventured into acceptable prices for some items. An example was the quantity of Baby Ray's Original BBQ sauce which works for our diabetes issues. We bought 12, one per month, at the cheapest price in town; by over $1 ea cheaper. When we finished it up, we were running about $.50 - $.80/ ea cheaper at the place we bought and $1.50-ish cheaper than the the store with the next price up (Walmart). We did the same for regular yellow mustard and some other mustards; not too much after we bought the prices started to go up. Likewise, we are still brewing $4.99 a can coffee grounds from the discount grocery chain; it was the best price in town at the time with the lowest sales prices elsewhere considered. That same coffee is available with a new label, a few fewer ounces, and an increased price of $5.99. In Sept we will be buying additional coffee at $5.99/ ea to augment what we have on the shelf "to last a year". We enjoy a lot of coffee and by purchasing for the larder this way, we can continue to do so without having to change our coffee drinking habits due to cost.
Great planning on prices and purchase stock up 👍
June '22, we drastically changed our, especially grocery store, buying and larder stocking habits. In particular, we started shopping on the way home from every thing that takes us out elsewise; especially trips outside our local area. - June 1st '22 we thought we were clever and had an itenierary to do all the things on the way home from a morning thing and arrived home 12 hours after we started on our way home; never again. We now plan around a month's worth of trips away from home. - This had led us to stop in places where we have lived in times past, assorted ethnic stores, very small local stores, a couple of locations of a resaurant supply chain (each is a little different), different locations of a discount grocery chain (each is a little different), the bread outlet store, and more which would not be cost effective to destination shop from home; unless buying in adequate quantity to make up for the gas to get there.
Love the ethnic stores. I’ve found some good deals. Wow, yeah, a 12 hour day would be rough!
@@PenniestoDollars They are good for some things but, my gosh stay away from the regular American food. Not EVERY where but most places, the American good is pretty expensive. The sauces and spices are almost always cheaper than in a regular grocery store. Sometimes you can find general American foods with labels in foreign languages, sometimes foreign brands too, that are cheaper than the American brands in a regular grocery store though.
We have been buying our ground pork there for over a dollar less a pound!
@@PenniestoDollars we had only one store/ chain in town that sold ground pork and it was wonderful. Then thier ground pork went to 50% to 60% fat and sold as sausage meat (no seasonings) supposedly at customer demand/ request. Even the very lean (ie minimum 90% lean, molten leaner in practice) ground pork doesn't have the hard, b-b like texture of ground beef. Ground pork also infuses itself with what ever flavorings its cooked better than ground beef whether its from a sauce or bullion, spices and herbs, or veggies. I really like it. It was cheaper than ground beefcand every so often they would have it on mark down for 50%:off; as needed, I would put off buying fill-in groceries to be able fill the freezer when i stumbled upon it at 50% off.
@terryhenderson424 We really like it.
Great burger prices 😊

I have to say the grocery store that I normally shop at really didn't have any good sales at all. But another one that I will occasionally stop at where they do have some good deals I was able to get two packages of Ballpark Franks for $4 total. So that was a good deal. Also they had some day old Bakery products as the particular grocery store is known for their exceptional bakery. And I was actually able to buy something for the holidays. For Thanksgiving and Christmas I was able to buy four trays of dinner rolls their homemade dinner rolls that came in metal trays disposable metal trays. And normally they are $5 a package and I got each of them for 2.50. So that was exceptional I brought them home and put them right away to the freezer and we will pull them out for Thanksgiving dinner and also for Christmas dinner.
Yum!!
@@PenniestoDollars 😋
They do that with BOGO alot..people think its a deal but they jack up the price of the first item
Yep!
Yes, exactly, or the item is out of stock until the sale is over.
You got some great deals. I am realizing my area does not have very good deals, and I follow all the sales ads. But we have an Aldi's and a Walmart within a mile of the house. Aldi is the overall lowest in my area. Walmart is high priced in our area.......I only get odds and ends there. Because we have stores so close to us I don't have that mindset that I would have if I lived far from town. I don't buy $500 at a time. I will go to a store that has a good deal on meat and buy extra......but I find someone else has usually cleared it off the shelf before I get there. Occasionally I will get a good deal on a couple packages of chicken breasts or pork chops. I do find good deals on laundry detergent in my area.......not sure why that is always on sale.
Aldi is our go to for most things, too.
When you wintered in Texas I bet you remember HEB. They are THE go to grocery store down here. While I love the atmosphere of the store and they do have some good products, it's really not a good deal, at least for my small family. For instance: Buy 25$ of frozen vegetables and get $3.00 off your cart, or something like buying several pounds of prepared fajita meat so you can get one can of refried beans. It just doesn't add up. Also, we never see rain checks anymore down here. I follow a couple in New York that have some of the most amazing loss leaders and their stores issue rain checks. All we get is "while supply lasts," which is usually one day, during the week, while I'm at work. Anyway, I really do try to stock up on meat when it's on sale, but other than that, it's pretty much a crap shoot on everything else. LOL! They really keep us on our toes, don't they!
Yeah, HEB rarely had good sales. I was glad I brought a lot of food with me. I ended up falling back on Walmart for some things in TX.
Yes the stores have ramped up new and various marketing techniques. A new one here in Central Oregon is 4 for $20. That's four pacakages of meat or chicken, etc for $20. So the packages look like a pound of food but are only 3/4 of a pound. Not that great of a deal. They also post a loss leader at a great price and something very similar at an outrageous price. You have to really pay attention and grab the correct loss leader. Like you said to slow down a little. Judy
@@Judith-b3t Thanks for the info! I haven’t seen that one here yet.
Grocery shopping can be exhausting for me
I agree.
@@PenniestoDollars ❤
Of course, we filled our freezer with bread and while basically local, we stopped at one of our more regular grocery stores for a 6 day fill-in shop on the way home from another mandatory, in-person event; 6 days because Wed we will again be out for a mandatory thing. While there, we stumbled across a Manager's Special on 1lb tubes of 90% lean Jennie-o ground turkey for $1.98/ ea. Ground turkey is often more expensive than ground beef on a comparative fat/ lean percentage in our area and @$2/ pound is a great price ground meat price despite the fat percentage here. - We've eaten very little ground meat of any type since @Mar '22 because of the comparative cost of grams of protiem to other meats. - We used our last of August's stock up money to buy 12 tubes. We would have dipped a little more into other money because among other things at $1.98/ lb these tubes met our target maximum of $2/ pound for meat. It is possible but it is getting harder and as a result we are buying in quantity for the freezer when we come across
Great stock up price!
The grocery store that I shop at is the same way where they do a buy one get one free bacon but the cost of the bacon is actually more expensive than what it used to be. I have been doing a lot of my shopping now at Aldi and very little at the grocery store that I have to drive about 20 minutes to.
💜💜
@@PenniestoDollars I literally have two Aldi's the one about 3 minutes from my house and another about 10 minutes away. So when I go and drive to the 20-minute grocery store on my way back I can hit both Aldi if I need to and get what I need. I drive that far to a Whole foods. But it's also an outing for my son , we get lunch out together, he looks forward to it, so that's why I also make a trip out so it kind of kills two birds with one stone
@nancysaffield5337 Two Aldi’s! That’s great!
@@PenniestoDollars 👍
I don't know if you have the option where you shop but the Hormel brand Black label bacon is very tasty and doesn't shrink that much and I find is much less fatty than Oscar Mayer and it is American made!
Hormel just hasn’t been on sale at all. I would rather have a less fatty one but most bacon is $9.
Kroger is really bad at raising the prices of something stupidly high, then the next week have them buy one get one free. You think your getting a deal but you are not. Walmart has been messing up with overcharging on their meat and mis tagging the meat. It isn't really Walmart doing it it is the manufacturer that Walmart buys from. We used to only do meat on price per pound there is a certain point when you are broke you can no longer do that. If you only have 30.00 to feed your family it doesn't matter what the price per pound is. You have to look at the price per package and figure out how many meals you can get out of that package. The meat could be cheaper per pound but only feeds you for one meal at the same price as another price per pound that is more expensive but, can feed you more meals. We are at that point, I only have 20.00 per week to buy groceries, since I have a full pantry I don't need to buy a lot at one trip. Sometimes, I go for a week or two and not buy anything. I have a surplus in grocery money to make a bigger buy when something we use a lot of goes on sale. Look at the rolls of breakfast sausage instead of buying your ground pork that way. If you buy the kroger brand it has less of that breakfast sausage taste and is cheaper.
We actually buy both, breakfast sausage roll and ground pork for cooking. Great points.
Oh, and pretty sure I am going to start making my own mayonnaise. I won't buy the brands that are made with seed oils.....they cause inflammation for me. So the brand I like is almost $12 a container.....made with avocado oil. Not doing that anymore.
It has gotten crazy high.
Good video! I like to see grocery videos to see what prices are in other areas of the US.
Sales are pathetic here in Northeast Ohio. At this time I am just going to Aldi (staying clear of the Aldi find fun area) and then a couple of times a month I will go to the Amish bent and dent store for miscellaneous to vacuum seal in jars, freeze or Mylar. My goal has been to keep it as close to under $150 a month. I quit Walmart because it was out of hand on price or they just didn’t have products.
Happy Labor Day weekend!
Agreed. I rarely go to Walmart for that reason.
I usually try to get what we need and shop the sales. But if I or my husband sees something reduced that is shelf stable, we will pick it up to use later. My husband found white gravy powder mix in containers for .50 each and water chesnuts for stirfry for .50 each and reduced bananas for apprx. .50 a bunch for banana nut bread. It saves us $ later and we find a way to use it.
Yes for sure. Great finds!
