  • I reckon there will always be some kind of market for Digital SLRs, but mirrorless cameras are undoubtedly the future: so, I'm very excited to be testing out my first Canon RF camera lens, for their new EOS R full-frame mirrorless cameras: an update of their perennial favourite 24-105mm f/4 model. Let's see how well it works.

This lens will /not/ work on digital SLR cameras, or Canon EOS M cameras - only Canon EOS R system cameras.

I am using my "old" EF glas with the EF-2-RF mount adapter with the control ring. So I have this feature also to my "old" EF and EF-S lenses. They are working pretty well on my EOS RP and R7. And my EF L lenses are performing very good on the R mirrorless system with the adapter. Thank you for your work for testing all this (for me Canon) lenses!!!

I bought one of these for my wife. She uses it on her EOS RP. The focus speed on this lens is amazing. I have an EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II that we used on her RP via the adapter and the focus speed on that lens isn't nearly as fast as this lens. Its also lightweight.
We bought it pre-owned. We buy most of our Canon products either pre-owned or Canon refurbished. We save tons of $$$$$.

I got one of the old EF 24-105/4 kit'd with my 5D mk2 back when that camera was launched. It's the only lens I've ever abused. I once managed to drop it by not having closed my camera bag and standing up, it fell out and landed on the sidewalk. It still works 100% but the filter screw thread got FUBAR bent. I've always been really impressed with my little 24-105 that it's still alive and kicking and I've since (knock on wood) never done something that stupid to my gear.

I'm currently waiting on a 28-70 to be delivered to replace my 24-105 and am watching this to assure myself it's worth the trade up. 😅 The fact that the RF version of this lens is almost indistinguishable from the EF version on sharpness etc reminds me of the "nifty fifty" which is clearly simply an EF version with a built in adapter and no noticeable optical improvements.

The RF has one aspherical element.

The RF has a completely different optic scheme (basically reversed to the EF) and an aspherical element; in the middle/far centre the performance is very much better then the EF, see Gordon Laing review, which compares the two.

Can you hear the auto focusing noise? I do for my new 24-105 F4. Is this normal or not. Look forward to your reply. Thanks.

I Do love your reviews. I have the old 24-105 f4 and I've been using it for years, maaaaany years.
At the end of the day, in my landscape photography is the one I use the most.
Everybody is telling you how good was your review. However, nobody asks why you did find almost NO difference when comparing sharpness in RF vs EF.
Even Dustin Abbott found a clear winner. To be honest your review confused me a little bit regarding potential improvements in this new RF version. Any thoughts?
    Thanks for the review!!

I was thinking the exact same thing. All other reviews I've seen on the RF 24-105 says it's amazingly sharp. I personally have never been fan of the EF version specifically because it wasn't that sharp. I was excited to hear the new version was superb, but this review does not concur...

I highly appreciate your reviews, Many thanks for suppoting my buying decisions. I got my copy together with the R5 last weekend and found in my converted files (from RAW to DNG) significant chromatic aberration, very pronounced at 105mm. Did you notice this effect too or do you basically use the in camera aberration correction?

      I just use corrections

You should get your copy checked as the RF 24-105mm is supposed to have minimal chromatic aberrations especially when compared to its predecessor.
