In PLA it works with DCM.
Two words of advice:
1. Very low backlash, agreed. But nobody will tell you the input is not linear to the output! If you plot a chart with the angles measured at the input and at the output, instead of a nice diagonal straight line, you'll get a wobbly diagonal, like a a sinusoidal turned loose on that line! Of course, the effect is tiny, but it's there, inherent in the math of the thing. And if you get the dual stage model, where you have a 1 : 10 coupled to a 1 : 9, for instance, you get the ripple of two asynchronous sinusoidal waves violating that diagonal line...
2. Even using two discs, you never completely mitigate the vibratory effect: you just lower it, by offsetting the direction of the vibration from a perpendicular to the rotational axis to a direction at an angle from it...

Yee Sen Chai I would imagine it would just divide the vibration points (nodes?) Into thirds. Basically you can always cut something in half but you can never get rid of if.

All cycloidal transmission devices have a torque ripple. This is caused by the near zero speed motion when the tooth of the rotor is in the pocket of the stator. The angluar motion switches from about the center of the rotor orbit to the center of the lobe. If you've ever used a spirograph you have felt this (it is uncomfortable when the rolling radius nears zero)

We have replaced cyclos that I remembered weighing a little less that 4 tons. 6000 series 2 stage 600ish to 1 reduction with 15HP motor.
I would have to check the nameplate, but that location sounds familiar.

I use these everyday as part of a bigger gear train assembly. Taken apart they are pretty mesmerizing to watch. Think of ones the size you can't even put your arms around, yea they are a pain to put back together. Unless you know to flip it upside down so output shaft is pointing up then pins go in last. Noway you are putting the pins in before the discs.

I learned more about how cycloidal gearsets work just now than I did in 10 years working in the bearing store.
Wailing on the sub-assembly with the ball-bearings pressed in place and/or hammering the ball-bearings in place causes the balls to peen the races that will eventually lead to premature failure.
This is why bearings (ball and roller) should always be pressed on, never hammered.
Tell that to the idiots who install U-joints with a hammer instead of a vise!!! 😖

8:42 Two contra-phase cycloidals, "minimize" (do not eliminate) vibration. The centrifuguals are neutralized, but since the cycloidals are separated along the main shaft, there is an oscillating torque applied to the angular momentum vector, which exerts a nutating pulse.
this ^^^. It'll wobble back and forth, like a 4 cylinder opposed engine. Even though two cylinders are always going the same direction, they're offset so there's a moment (rotational force) developed.

Except you don't actually learn any engineering, you learn the very basics of how certain tools function. Nowhere near enough math and physics here to learn anything remotely related to engineering. It's like saying you're learning science by watching discovery documentaries. :P
Most of us here already know engineering and have 30-40 years experience so we are actually quite happy to just have the funny bits ;)
If you want that type of "education" there's school and other ways - but they lack the spirit, humour and the di*k in the vise! :P

That may be the coolest thing I've seen in like ten years.
Rockwell Automation actually innovated based on this, they placed the lunar wane shafts in such a way that side fumbling was completely eliminated. This was used in their highly successful Turbo Encabulator.
7:50 it looks like a caterpillar running around.
The 2 rotor cyclo gearbox still has some vibration. It wants to turn with an axis perpendicular to the input and output. Because the rotors are hopping up and down 180° phase difference you get torque.
You need 4 to balance completely (unless i've missed something). Set them up as a straight 4 engine.
Likely overkill, but if you want insane high speed on that (i don't judge) you should cancel rotating oscillations aswell
You can just use three with the center one being twice the mass and offset from the outers, if we're picking at details.

That design will balance the free forces of even order but not the forces of uneven order. Regarding free torque it will depend completelly on the fixation point of the gearbox.
TBH this idea came because it reminded me of an engine and as far as i know inline 4 doesn't have weighted rods to cancel torque (no engineering qualification whatsoever)

It's the process of forgetting that's the best part.
The cycloidal drive is not going to be a good way to multiply torque, but I think you came to that conclusion already. I have tried to use it a couple times in my job, but since I really am trying to multiply torque instead of reduce speed, it just doesn't work. One of the main problems is that the pins that drive the output shaft are only partially engaged. It is kind of hard to explain, but if you look closely at your 3D printed parts and the contact between the pins and the 6 holes in the gear, you'll see that 1 or 2 are at a tangential point and another 1 or 2 just aren't at a good angle to drive which leaves you with just 1 or 2 pins to do the actual driving. As a speed reducer the cycloidal is amazing, but it just isn't a good idea for high load situations.

I use one in on a large shot blasting machine in a foundry. The table drive has one it, no idea the reduction, but it puts out enough torque from a 2hp motor to turn a 2000# stainless steel table with 4000lbs of castings on it. Works fantastic.

what would the efficiency be of this gearbox compared to a standard spur gearbox ?
Friction is most definitely higher, lots of sliding surfaces. There is also going to be a lot of pressure on the offset (Cycloidal?) bearing in the middle as it is pushing the gear around. I'm no expert but thats what it looks like to me.

in a cheap design that i had seen a bike chain was used for the outside pins. as the lobe plates would move the roller on the bike chain would rotate reducing friction. the reducer was for a jack screw that would adjust a satalite dish. so operation was like 100 rpm for 2 minutes once a week ie low usage.

You gotta get those bearings off there somehow and it doesn't work to well radially

This is not the case. We use them in large lifters. I have personally released the motor brake to have the load go down, thus turning the motor.

I've rebuilt hundreds of those... (actually a larger version) Usually they tear up the bearing & input shaft, sometimes the output gets twisted off.... Very cool design..
I've heard these called "Grinder Gears", for their characteristic crunching. Last I heard about them there was no known/non-toy purpose. I had no idea they existed as an industrial product.
This things are great! Tough as shit, until you forget that the puddle of oil they are swimming in doesn't lubricate the innards.
Sort of reminds me of the internal workings of a Wankle/rotary engine.
I work in the largest aluminum can plant in the world. We have these gear boxes everywhere, mostly on conveyance. Some of them are easily pushing 30 years old in a can plant that is pushing 60 years old. Very reliable & indestructible - but AvE is correct, run it out of oil and the clipboard are bitching about downtime.
Michael-Michael Motorcycle I have seen one go several hours without oil. Not totally dry, but the oil leaked out through a blown output seal (vertical drive). They sure let you know about it, they howl!

I watch a lot of your videos! I wanted to chime in on your mention about recentering an off center punch. I used to build oilfield pump packages (Skids) gear drive and belt drive. I also rebuilt Industrial Gearboxes. I routinely drilled and tapped new holes for the covers on the Gearboxes including the shaft covers with just a drill and tap. Normally they would be sent to a machine shop for that but I told them it was not necessary and I did many of them without issue. Anyway, I used to just move my punch over but I found the best way to do it is to put your punch in the off center hole you made lean it over at an angle and point it in the direction that you want to move your punch hole in and hit the punch until you think it's where you want it then stand it up at a 90° angle and hit the punch harder. If it's still off center just do it again until you get it where your want it then once you have it centered hit your punch hard enough that it makes the hole bigger than the off center one where the point of your punch is or many times I would just end up overtaking the original hole with the larger diameter of the new one. Works every time. Well, At least if you are experienced and have a good eye it does!

I work as a millwirgt and took one of these apart a month ago, before watching this video. Was very impressed. I thought they were like a normal gearbox but it's nothing like a normal gearbox. High torque capabilities and very reliable in terms of their operation, very rare to have one break unless the bearings break, or key strips out
