Your listening is always appreciated,
Music is, without a doubt, our biggest achievement as a species.
standing on the moon was nice too
Andrew Suzuki Except that never happened.
Organ transplant is quit an achievement as well.
Then on the other end of the scale from the "enlightened" ones in Hollywood is Reality TV
I would agree -- music has the ability to move one's soul, to inspire revolutions, to invoke peace, to bring grown men to tears, to tear down nations, to build up kingdoms, to dive deep into oneself, or to pour oneself out for others to enjoy... There are very few people in the world who can honestly say that they've never been moved by a piece of music (just try watching an intense movie without the music, and see how much power it loses). I believe that there is nothing that has influenced mankind more than music, of one kind or another; it's woven throughout history, through myth and legend, and is found as an integral part of nearly every civilization (whether ancient, or modern).
Plus visual art and good cooking!
The worn fretboard shows how much work goes into being this good.
+Duane Ruth-Heffelbower
Thought the same Duane :-)
Yes, many years of practice.
Duane Ruth-Heffelbower Ha! That’s not wear, it’s dirt and grease. I’ve held that Stick and it’s wonderful. Bob travels and plays so much the instrument doesn’t get cleaned very often. He’s also the master teacher and I’ve learned a ton from him.
Not to burst your bubble, but that's accumulated dead skin cells, sweat and fat.

Any explanations?
His chapman stick Djently Sweeps.
Doesn't have the same ring to it, but I LOL'ed nevertheless.

George just quietly without much fanfare wrote the best Beatle songs.
I can't imagine the amount of concentration it must take to perform an arrangement like this. Astounding.
+aarongtr180 It's an amazing performance, but perhaps no more concentration required than to play the piano: each of 10 fingers striking notes...
ur underestimating how precise u gotta be to pull hat off. a piano has way larger buttons than the width of these stings. hes a fucking legend and this is if anything comparable to a harp but not even that.
@@GreenAsJade You're forgetting about pull offs, bends, and other expressions that must be coordinated with the rythmm section of the song which is no small task
@@Ben-yy7io I do agree with this and the earlier reply that the finesse required to articulate these notes is way higher than that of notes on a piano.
Just know ur instrument and know the song lol
I had the pleasure of doing sound for him at a festival, and it was beyond the realm. It was so beautiful. His studio albums were really great, but live? The audience around me was mesmerized, as was myself. Best show EVER! ❤
Thank you for the very kind words. I agree for most musicians not just myself video or records just don't fully capture live. I hope local venues begin to have more live music events again. Just curious what event were we at?
@@bobculbertson do you have a schedule of when and where you will be performing?
if a piano wanted to be a guitar for a day ...
Absolutely.
funny though cause it uses strings too
Exactly
Coming back after three years, I still don’t like you being right
Xstatic96 i thought of this instrument as i was playing piano and was sad theyre so much xD
I think the popularity of this instrument has been held back by its name: everyone wants to play guitar, no one wants to play on Chapman's Stick
I thought being a drummer and having to move 4 limbs independently was sometimes tough. This guy is doing it with 10! Like each finger and thumb is it's own little "person", working together in a band of sorts. Stunning piece of work, Mr. Culbertson....absolutely stunning!
You should see an organ: ten fingers plus two feet!
Players of the pedal steel guitar have it the hardest.. Both feet, both hands, and knee.
@@haweater1555 this is more challenging than pedal steel.
@@AlphaTribeBand
I'd call it a draw. Not being a fretted instrument with a PS you have to be exact with one's intonation. Frets gives one little latitude.
@@MeneerHerculePoirot the level of polyphony on a pedal steel is no where near this.
Words can not describe how good this really is... so I won't even try. I will just watch it again. You are a true virtuouso.
ikr
That is simply freaking amazing....... I have been a musician for over 20 years and have never heard anything like that ,I've read about the Chapman Stick but never actually seen one played and I am flabbergasted at how beautiful it sounds and how incredibly talented this player is
I'm about four months into the stick - after becoming entranced with this song. You notice first how easy the chords are, how satisfying it is to play simple bass for yourself - in the exact timing you want, and then how much of a reach you have to play lead... and how pretty the melody lines become with the expressiveness of touch.
Anyone interested should get the new Railboard. It's not even expensive. I got a bamboo 10-string and I swear the instument seems to be molding a tiny bit to the shape of what you play on it. But the string set-up is more reliable on the new anodized aluminum - so you will be able to play the entire range of the instrument - which is incredibly deep to incredibly high and clear.
What you can't see and hear from this wonderful Culbertson arrangement is the amazing stereo effect of having your left hand bass notes coming in one ear and your right hand melody and chords coming into the other ear. The brain loves it. It's just a fascinating cross-callosum both lobes of the brain experience.
Ran into a busker using one. My mind melted immediately. I’m saving up for one now
Who else wasn't expecting this to be so good...
This has to be one of the most amazing virtuoso fingerstyle performances I've ever watched! (and it's definitely the most beautiful music I've ever heard on a Chapman Stick.) Thanks Robert Culbertson
Namastê Sean _ My First Time To Hear Or See A Chapman Stick .........A Great Experience .......Thank You _ Something New..........
***** I agree, so calm and generally pleasant to listen to.
I would love to see a cover of Jim Croche "Time in a Bottle"
Amazing. I'm 65 and have just seen a Chapman Stick for the first time. And in the hands of a master. Brilliant!
I can’t think of another instrument that produces such unbelievably beautiful sound. It is so soothing and calming. You guys are amazing and so very talented.
Absolutely amazing
OUTSTANDING on all levels in all ways possible
to the point of unreal
Bob's Culbertson's talent takes us WAY beyond this world to some place else-some very blissful place else ! And his rendition of Eleanor Rigby is mind blowing. Crazy talented musician.
I'm not completely sure why, but this is one of the most beautiful versions of this song I've ever heard. Absolutely majestic. Almost hypnotic. Have listened to it probably over a hundred times and it still gets to me. George would be proud that Bob has touched so many people with this version of his song. Hauntingly sad, but at the same time, melodically beautiful. Simply not enough adjectives to describe it. Genius!
Incredible !*
I think you hit it on the head with “majestic “ - that one word sums it up for me, , , perfectly pure.
for real.
I was going to make a comment about how you can delay those sort of marks for quite by cleaning and re-oiling the fretboard every so often, but I think this man has just practiced for just *that* long
I totally agree. So mesmerizing. Wonderful.
I like the version with prince shredding on it
Culbertson's Stick's fingerboard looks like it has carried and played a LOT of great memories...
He'd have to answer for himself - but i think his technique, with the thin melody strings, has worn into the fretboard. To me it is beautiful to see. I have a laminate bamboo stick and the fretboard has two truss rods - so there is a little feeling of give along the fretboard. Emmet has been scooping the middle of the rails so the bass string can sit a little lower. Greg Howard, Emmet, and Bob all describe coming in at different angles to touch and vibrate the strings. Who's to blame if the legs of a hawk touch the water when grasping and flying off with a fish?
Lionhearted2000 Heh, that's gunk and dirt from his fingers from playing outside at art fairs for 12 hours at a time. He's often asked why he doesn't clean it. "That's where the funk is.", is his reply.
This is the most beautiful cover ever! I wish I could play like this.
I can't understand why 57 people dislike this superb version ???
THUMBS UP from me

However, there are still more than 12 000 thumbs up ;-). It is really awesome.
I remember when the Stick first came out. I was amazed then and I am still amazed now.
Chapman Stick just boggles my mind. What an incredible instrument and player.
oh wow......just wow.....brought me to tears ,,seriously , just a true master of the c stick ..wow
I like the tapping part :)
The sweetest strings ever ....Bravo..
This thing should be used more often in scoring movies. It’s such a weird combination of being so paired-down, yet full and melodic sounding. You’re awesome dude. Yes.
I wonder if it's actually the _best_ instrument?
Most aren't capable of more than one note at once. The violin family can a bit, but awkwardly and in a limited manner. Pianos can do a lot, but not with a particularly large amount of expression. Clavichords can do the expression, but without much oomph. This one clearly outranks guitars in several ways.

Well, Technically, the stick is the best instrument.
Woah !! 12 years ago and I'm just hearing this now ? Stunning !!
My guitar gently weeps because its place has been taken over by the Chapman stick.
A wonderful song made even more heavenly!
@1objection Vsauce posting my video means a lot to me. I work hard at my craft and to have this kind of support is really really appreciated. Thank You V!

WOW...what a truly GOD given talent.....amazing!
Who could possibly give this a "thumbs down"?!?!?!
Not who, but what...lol

Brilliant work! Such a pleasure to make this discovery here today!
[Have a great year in 2023]
All the people going gaga over the kids doing two hand tapping on a guitar need to watch this.
beautiful to wake up to on this Sunday morning
Looking foward to your duet with gurney halleck.
Beautiful, brings tears to a glass eye.
Incredible---Beautiful----George must be smiling. I need to hear more of this!
Just gorgeous. George would have loved it!
This is just so good I keep on coming back to hear it again... that Bass line is magic...what a great player !!
I'm simply stunned! Just... woah!
Thank you for listening. 🎵
Watched this mad times by now and the amount of goosebumbs this performance causes is off the charts. Such a great feeling. That's the key to music; to be able to repeatedly manipulate that in your listeners is the definition of musical mastery and why I continue to play. Well done!
Everytime I watch this I cry. One day I'll sell all my guitars, basses, recording equipment, move to France for a quieter life and learn how to do this - extraordinary! Thank you Robert ( and George ).
Soul movingly beautiful! Thank you Robert!
Three days ago, Emmett Chapman passed away. Rest in peace, master.

A master musician and a heck of a nice guy! We met Robert at the Carefree AZ Art Festival on 1-19-20 and could have listened to him all day.
As my mind gently melts watching you play......
It is poetry...Thank you very much, it is really beautiful. :)

String Theory Symphony
He strums the note apon the strings
Creating subatomic things
Vibrating elements into being
So many notes so many strings
These notes align there frequencies
The physics flows in harmonies And chemistries are melodies
In his universal symphony
And everything is sung to be
He sings the song and strums the strings
Such glory in every note he brings
In this song he wrote of everything
George would have the biggest smile on his face !!!!!!
Awesome sound ! I discovered this instrument a few days ago and it's breathtaking !
I kid you not, I just listened to this 4 times in a row, back-to-back. This is beautiful. I love the tone of the Chapman Stick. Excellent performance!
Mesmerizing 😳

A truly gifted artist performing on an incredible instrument. Hats off to the soul you put into playing!
wow this is impressive, flawless, sounds great
What a rich sound performing a wonderful tune. Thanks
Isn't metal at all, but damn!! all the world should hear this, definitly worth it
I'm glad I got to see him play the few times I have.
chillls all over my skin and tears pushing to come out ...
So Beautiful. TY for playing it for us.
Looks impossibly difficult to learn to play. I saw Tony Levin playing one in Denmark Street 20 years ago. Blew my mind away. Great playing by this man here.
Belew* your mind

That is just amazing! A lot of previous work and wear of that fretboard.. beautiful.

Thank you for this moment in time 🙏
amazing sound ..Love it!!
One of my favourite videos since 2015. It sounds like a 17th century lute instrument.
Totally Brilliant.....
Good God! I've listened to this like 7 times in a row! Wow, doesn't seem to suffice.
The guitar is weeping because it's not a chapman stick.
Had the pleasure of meeting him and hearing him play on Pier 39 in San Francisco. I had never heard of a Chapman stick at that point. Blown away by the beauty of the music.
that is one hell of a dirty fingerboard
AlexzanderVL that baby has seen some action
AlexzanderVL was totally thinking the same thing lol
AlexzanderVL Worn perhaps by many hours of playing.
AlexzanderVL Don't think its dirty, looks more like worn off finish to me.
AlexzanderVL That's like complaining about a dusty frame on a Rembrandt.
Bob is a Bona Fide Chapman Stick Legend, We were so lucky to meet him when he came to Australia some years back.
Wow. Quite expressive.
one of the coolest things ive ever seen... and heard
And when you're done playing, just put your feet on the leg rests and hop home on your Chapman Pogo Stick!
After hearing the sound of a Chapman stick on the street for the first time, it has become my favourite instrument. The only way I can describe the sound is that it's like an acoustic guitar but the sound is just "deeper". Deeper as in it just penetrates deeper into your soul. I love this instrument so much
+Robert Culbertson, could you do a tutorial video on how to play this please?
It will take you about 10 years jesus. A few videos wont help much
Thumbs up cause you're Jesus.
This Jesus has a chapman stick, and it's about as difficult to play as a piano with the keys and hammers removed. I can't get my head around the shapes and tuning of the thing.
No teachers in the area? You really need some one-on-one [rather than video tutorial] for awhile. However, I understand your metaphor; for most of the stick models one hand is the keys while the other is the hammer. For other models each hand has to do both. I'm assuming your background is either classical double bass or an electric bass? - that's how most people end up with a C-stick in the first place. I know you posted this a year ago; in the meantime have you checked out Bob's website [www.stickmusic.com/] or Emmett's [stick.com]. The latter has DVDs and lesson books along with other resources.
@@JesusisJesus he has a bunch of instructional videos
There is nothing to dislike about this. George Harrison did a great job when he composed it and this guy playing does one hell of a bang up job with it. What's not to like?!
Chapman Stick---- While My Guitar Gently Weeps----
I'm a fan for Beatles stuff for sure and it's many forms.
I just had a toe-curling eargasm. I can’t even begin to figure how that thing works. But holy moley, I don’t care. Play on!!!
It’s like a stringed piano. Love it.
Who thumbs this down?
Those who are terrified by the sight of so many strings.
Chaif15Let
it's easier to play than the harp.... and you can play just one string two full octaves if you want... and modulate each note.
those people are made of jelly >:(
Just......wow! Absolutely outstanding.
Guitar is boring now..I need to have one of these!
Right....
Try a Sitar. Remember Ravi Shankar? His son L used to play with John McLaughlin. His daughter is a master Sitar player.
Mike383HK
Did you know that Ravi Shankar is the father of Nora Jones? I guess it runs in the family...
Marty M. Had no idea!!! Never heard that!!
Marty M. Wow!! Geetali Norah Jones Shankar!!! That's her full name!!
Is this possibly the best instrument ever invented? It sure ought to rank up there alongside the piano in terms of richness of sound, and this guy is just superb.
you can see by the wear on it the parts of the stick he doesn't ever play.
+rey waifu wtf are YOU on about?
Hey I have the same kind~!
...I mean the jacket
:(
If it makes you smile (and it did), you know it's good!
So how does this work? He presses the fretboard and the notes appear, without the strings being plucked?
+Sara Chapman
I have a visual demonstration of how the instrument works here at this link.
ua-cam.com/video/2GS0nKIebCc/v-deo.html
Thank you for your interest.
+Sara Chapman In short, he just uses hammering
+Sara Chapman Somewhat similar to how a piano works. but instead of having many strings of varying lengths he brings the fingers down behind certain frets to shorten them and at the same time cause the note to be played like the hammer inside of a piano. That's about as well as I can explain it without Robert's video (which explains it better than I can)
+Sara Chapman So Sara Chapman dont know how the Chapman Stick works?...
+Sara Chapman if you know how piano and guitar works.. its the same concept. you press like a piano and run through the frets like a guitar to get the keys right. and this is electric so the sound is amplified. if this isn't connected to an electricity or something to amplify the sound you wouldn't hear it unless there's complete silence
Perfect blending of beautiful sound! Luscious!
Can you imagine this magnificent instrument in the hands of Jimi Hendrix???
I surrender ... So beautiful!
Yikes. Maybe Clapton isn't God after all! This guy's incredible. Look at how worn his fretboard is. This is no part-time guitarist.
"When a keyboard and a fretboard love each other VERY much...."

wow.. just wow.. George would be smiling down upon you..
