  • Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
    Season 3 Episode 13
    "The Lost Bomb"
    First aired 11 December, 1966
    An unfriendly government shoots down a cargo plane carrying a new top secret bomb. The race is on to retrieve the bomb and avoid detection from the enemy before the bomb can be accidentally exploded.
    (Apparently, naming the enemy sub "Vulcan" didn't register in Irwin Allen's mind as a plug for a competing TV series on another network.)
    This episode is a recording from a recent broadcast of an HDTV-transferred and restored film. Additional audio and video augmentation by TooleMan TV, 2023.

    As a young boy growing up in the 1960's at the height of the cold war, space race, & computer technology in it's infancy, anything & everything seemed possible. However under water laser weapons are apparently impossible today just as they were in the 1960's. A Texas Instruments calculator was far more advanced & sophisticated in the 1980's than the onboard computers used in the Apollo & Space Shuttle programs. Fiction writers have the luxury of their imaginations but sadly not real world science. We have come along way & perhaps there are now laser weapons systems that are in production but still secret. Time will tell. I had the toys from the the shows, they inspired our dreams of a future that is still to come.

    • @spvillano
      @spvillano 9 місяців тому

      Well, a Commodore 64 was a lot more advanced than the Space Shuttle computer and had more RAM. But, it wasn't radiation hardened, nor was it avionics rated and well, rightfully so.
      But, lasers were cool and new back then, hence, magical. Star Trek started out with lasers and after the pilot switched to phasers, since lasers were becoming a bit better known. Lasers only coming into existence around 1960 for optical lasers (the microwave laser, aka maser first being developed in 1953). At that time, ruby rod lasers were state of the art, with the He-Ne laser being the first gas laser in 1962.
      And well, the first nude hologram coming out in the early 1970's.

      According to lore, Terry Becker added that accessory upon being hired on for Voyage. This was for the series' "bold new season 2" that promised more "romantic" surface stories; Becker said that Irwin promised some more femme action for the cast principals. All that went overboard of course when ratings indicated that "surface stories" weren't making it...from then on, underwater and no "romance".

      The Voyage comic books and the Man from Atlantis comic books have some fascinating illustrated concepts for "actual deep driving suits". On a handwavium stage, these could work. Undoubtedly expenses and production pace would prevent setting up 'special suits in the wardrobe lab '. Newsweek's quick review of the show (based on pilot/first episode) in 1964 fussed over "skin diving at 1000 feet".

    Appreciate the high def but the motion smoothing and high frame rate has made this great shot on film series from the 60s have a shot on video “ soap opera effect” Also MeTV seems to have changed the aspect ratio. It’s a bit wider than the 4 x3 it should be. It would be great if Fox rescanned the negatives and really put this out in true (not simulated )HD / 4K

    • @TooleManTV
      @TooleManTV  5 місяців тому +2

      It is real HD, make no mistake about it. But I agree that Voyage deserves a remastered Blu-Ray treatment. Fox cropped the image a little to better fill today's 16x9 screen. It's a common practice of distributors with older series now. At least we are getting HD scans of the 60-year-old films.

    When I was a kid, this show seemed fascinating. When I look back at it now, all I see is a large collection of plot irregularities & technically impossible occurrences. They bring aboard a specialist to disarm the bomb, then he turns out to be a traitor, so they do it without him (and his skills). A torpedo going off nearby and destroying a large sub doesn't harm the scuba divers in the water. The list goes on.
