That would be equivalent of mixing Ramen, Cake, Chili Sauce just because they are individually awesome and will guarantee good mixing results for that reason. XD
Streetshark Valve used to be pretty user friendly, but the paid mods debacle was the last nail in the coffin that was trust in Valve. GOG Galaxy is coming brothers!
Streetshark This video still doesn't explain why they can't make HL3. It implies that they couldn't somehow maintain Steam and develop HL3 at the same time. Why? Because they don't have enough people? As the video shows, they're obviously making shittons of money. If they developed HL3 it WOULD make money. So long as profit is involved, why not? It's what a sizable amount of people are asking for. Personally I've lost my excitement for the game, but I would still buy it if it came out and didn't look like shit.

Also, if we're assuming Portal 3 would continue Chell's story line, anything that happens in HL3 would be spoiled in Portal 3, because Portal 3 would take place after the events of Half Life. In fact, as much as I love Portal 2, it kind of shouldn't have been made, a misstep in priorities in my opinion. Unless maybe the two plots converge in the next installment and they therefore had to bring the events of Portal up to speed with the rest of the universe before they could proceed. What if we ( Half-Life fans ) would come all together and make Half-Life 3! A game sequel made by Half-Life players For Half-Life players. It would be an epic dream! :)
i dont have a single problem with valve as a company. oh no, they dont make games anymore! steam is a great program that has no competition. free games, no ads, mod support/tools, community content, ingame internet browser, MASSIVE sales, integrated voice chat, unlimited downloads, multitasking... i'm fine with that.
True, but it all runs through Steam. And they can decide at any time that a subscription model might suit their "bottom-line"; there goes all free content, your library that you have fine-tuned over the last couple of years, your friend list, etc. Think Gamespy, but where a company can actually block anyone who wants to use free content on their site or system. Using proprietary systems always keeps the home advantage...well,at home. Would have been nice if Steam games and content could have an open-source alternative, preferrable off-line, that would allow me to save my games to, so I have access to them even if Steam ever becomes subscription based, or like many other companies (like GameSpy), actually go belly-up over time.
Marinus van Zyl They could, but they won't. After doing so much for the benefit of their customers, why throw it all away? And a move like that would anger customers and developers alike, they would destroy their entire userbase on both sides practically overnight. Also, Steam has an offline mode and you can play all games offline as long as they don't have a second, 3rd party method of DRM.
Arturo Espinoza But it almost feels that Valve is trying to be the fourth major choice for gaming (behind Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo). True, they are developing their own devices and software, but in my personal opinion it seems as if they are trying to position themselves as a fourth alternative gaming/entertainment company with proprietary architecture and unique devices and peripherals (and that would imply creating a profit-based ecosystem of interconnected devices - as seen with the Steam OS, the Steam Controller, etc.) - everyone running from a single virtual OS (the Steam OS). I could be wrong or reading too much into it, but no company is created to provide stuff for free to its user base. Sure, it can offer something for free, but that is usually subsidized by sales elsewhere. Valve could do more, but it will need to secure a massive source of permanent revenue streams, along the lines of Sony and Microsoft when they create hits. And experience has taught me that if one person controls the keys to the car, only he allows access and decides on who can drive and when that car can be used (for free). And while that person allows free use of the "car" and/or its accessories for now, that might not always be the case; especially if it runs contrary to the best interests of the company, the maintenance of current infrastructure or simply blocks the development of new products.
Marinus van Zyl I'm sorry but you seem to got something wrong. The Steam OS is for free, you can download it. Valve declared they won't be making consoles at all, you can either buy them or build your own as well. And even, those consoles you buy, they've been designed with modules for easy upgrades, pretty much they are making PC's easier to upgrade and run. The controller is needed since most gaming controllers are limited to a certain speed for camera movement, that if you make a connection between a console and PC in a FPS, you will see PC gamers will always win. Plus, if you are not aware most PC games that were ported to Consoles had been made extra easier cause the mechanics make it extremely hard for a console player to play that game. To me, as Gabe said, they are busy right now making the future for gaming. It seems only one thing: They want absolute control over PC Gaming, no, gaming. Right now STEAM got the best sales for video games. Which company allows you to get video game collection worth over $900 just for under $90. And if you weren't aware, Steam sometimes gives codes for free, and other times they just tell you that you need to download a game and you get it for free. I've gotten at least 20 free games from Steam through their steam. I got Portal for free, got Metro 2033 for free also, and can't remember what others, I didn't get unknown games for free. So if they want to conquer the market and have insane sales and give games for free, without a subscription, allow you to download their OS for free which you can install in any machine, well, that seems way more flexible than any other one. Unless you can tell me wrong.
It seems like everyone in this comment section all wants Valve to release miracle games every six months. But when Treyarch does that with COD everyone complains, maybe we as the selfish fans could actually appreciate the fact that a fully blown corporation with all the money it would ever need to keep existing forever actually takes the time to stay devoted to their fans. The fact that Valve delays its games means that the game is not yet perfect and they want to make sure that their fans are given what they "deserve." Do you think it's easy for Valve to delay those games when all anyone will do is yell at them for making sure that their product is all it can be? When a company like Valve with the smartest, most talented, devoted, and passionate people in the world and only about 300 employees trying their best to be original and make miracle video games in this wasteland of creativity called the "Gaming Industry" they deserve to be commended for trying their best to give us what we all want. You WILL get what you want eventually, but until you get it let the developers at Valve do what they do best and make miracles, because it takes time.
For anyone wondering how Valve is run and why your games aren't coming out right now, their employee handbook would probably shed some light on it and I urge you all to read it, it's very interesting to hear how they work. media.steampowered.com/apps/valve/Valve_NewEmployeeHandbook.pdf
Team Gamerfood You literally have no idea what you're talking about. You're basing all of your opinions on your lack of real information on the subject. You probably didn't even read anything that I said.
Half Life 2 was released in 2004. That was 10 years ago. Your telling me that for the last 10 years and counting they were perfecting Half Life 3? What about Left 4 Dead? They made the Left 4 Dead 2 5 years ago and no sign of 3 anywhere. And then there's Portal, also no third installment in sight. If they don't start making more of these games people are going to move on and forget about them. Then when Valve finally decides to make them no one is going to care because they were to late.
I honestly believe part of the reason they haven't and probably wont make HL3 is because there are so many people who want it, that Valve couldn't possibly make a game to their expectations.
A lot of people want the new Zelda. I guess Nintendo shouldn't make the new Zelda then. Stop with these lame ass excuses. You can't sit there with a straight fact and say that openly.
Why didn't I watch this sooner? That last catchline had me on the floor. xD Valve: The only company that can go from making innovative games and software, to making an entire stock market based around hyperlinked .png images what's only function is increasing an arbitrary number on users profiles, while still having their customers kiss the ground they walk on. :V
Don't we all sir. I just detected a little animosity about it. Gota learn to control your inner communist and learn to be happy for the success of others.
It will be called The Steam Box. You'll see the new Half-Life and the new Left 4 Dead (and why not, maybe a new Portal [or even a new IP, who knows?] ) bundled in their machines, but they won't make it exclusively for their machines, of course.
+Mlg Aleks Also, we made a half-@$$ed attempt to apologize but we know, if we were really sorry, we could have removed micro-transactions in the first place and gave refunds. But hey, we're not Bethesda that messed up with Skyrim paid mods. We think they lost a good business practice when they were both sorry and gave refunds.
This nailed it on the fucking head. Been playing Valve games since 2000...Ever since 08 I've been growing more and more concern of Valve's priorities. It really does feel like they threw away their old dedicated pre-2007 fanbase for a large more naive fanbase that are so fanatical to defend Valve on every bad decision they make.
completely, I played HL1 on release back when I was 9, and I was playing CS back on WAN, so I used to love valve but now I can't stand them, and this is 100% why: they sold out harder than anyone ever sold out, they just like to pretend they didn't, and have legions of idiots willing to defend that because they like to buy virtual hats
The truth is that Half Life 1 and 2 are genre defining games, that ran on an in house engine (well Source was 100% in house) and have both lasted decades, and are both still in use. Valve does not just want to release the next big AAA title that people will have forgot about in 6 months time. More is expected from a title like Half-Life. We will probably not see Half-Life 3 on the Source engine, or any of its upgraded variations. Most likely it will be on Valves next engine. Just like they did with HL1 and HL2, HL3 will be developed on a new in house engine, and future Valve games will be developed on that as well, and obviously a gazillion user mods also. I am not basing this off of rumors or inside knowledge. It just makes sense from a business standpoint, and from the fact that First Person Shooter genre, is quite frankly played out at this point in time. At least modern shooters. They need to come up with some big innovations for it to be anything special. Just having good gun play and a nifty physics engine is no longer enough to be a genre defining title.
Wait a second... Half life release date 1998 Half life 2 release date 2004 that is a 6 year difference there are 2 games 6 divided by 2=3 HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED
a company as smart as valve would recognize that they don't have to stop the steam workshop to make A game. if valve was 100% honest with us, they would do what the are doing and keep doing it.
Now suddenly Valve is "evil"?. Fucking Valve saved PC gaming and made games more accesible to everyone, not to mention cheap with a great gaming and online platform. And yeah fuck Valve because they make money by selling other studio's games, ¿isn't exaclty what Microsoft, Sony, EA, Activision and sometimes Nintendo does? and about Half-Life 3 just get over it, Valve never cared about it before Steam and certainly doesn't cares now, even if HL3 sees the light of day, ¿Do you honestly think it will live to the involuntary hype Half-Life fans created?
CommentSection Barbarian GoG is MUUUUUUUUUUCH smaller than Steam, and Humble Bundle pretty much just gives keys for steam and some other services. (Though, mostly Steam)
We'll never see Half-Life 3 because it will never live up to the hype leading to some unhealthy backlash towards Steam People will be like, "HL3 sucks! I've had it with Steam! I'm leaving"
Valve is a privately owned business and I trust them more than I trust a publicly traded company and yes, they do make money, but they provide a good service.
If you did that then almost everyone would evacuate and you may shoot the HL Team or worse...the TF team. I am still waiting for the damn comic to come.
this is exactly why I wish they would just sell off the rights to the franchises. let them just be the steam company and we can still see the games come out someday.
whoever buys them would make bad(or just different-but to many people there's no difference so...) versions, and then people would somehow blame Valve for that

True very true because Gabe Newell is about to die so some one is going to lead valve to grateness.
Actually have you Heard of "The Kane: Chronicles"? It was a PS2 game that left a major cliffhanger and to this day the company refuses to make a last game.
I googled Gabe to make sure I wasn't looking at Gabe
Paid mods, never been so accurate.
I think valve will make a huge fortune with half life 3 with so many people waiting for it
They'll never make one. No matter what they do, the hype will be so great that a large percentage of customers will be disappointed.
@@ted_b so what did you think of half life alyx?
no mention of hats?
What if we ( Half-Life fans ) would come all together and make Half-Life 3! A game sequel made by Half-Life players For Half-Life players. It would be an epic dream! :)

Devi dude it took six years
i dont have a single problem with valve as a company.
oh no, they dont make games anymore!
steam is a great program that has no competition.
free games, no ads, mod support/tools, community content, ingame internet browser, MASSIVE sales, integrated voice chat, unlimited downloads, multitasking...
i'm fine with that.
Finally a voice of reason.
I'd love to see you guys do Double Fine next...if you dare.
The only Double Fine game I enjoyed was Costume Quest, I wish they would go back to games like that.
I couldn't agree more dude.Valve is my fav video game company!:3
Half Life 2 was released in 2004. That was 10 years ago. Your telling me that for the last 10 years and counting they were perfecting Half Life 3? What about Left 4 Dead? They made the Left 4 Dead 2 5 years ago and no sign of 3 anywhere. And then there's Portal, also no third installment in sight. If they don't start making more of these games people are going to move on and forget about them. Then when Valve finally decides to make them no one is going to care because they were to late.
SnakeStampedeGaming Confirmed expert in the business side of the video game industry!!
I would give everything to see GabeN's reaction to this video.
This December this video will be three years old. With every year it becomes more and more true.
Very nicely done.
it's almost Half-life 2's 10 year anniversary
I come here once a year. I miss the old days...
I uhhhh this isn't working bye bye episode 3
I honestly believe part of the reason they haven't and probably wont make HL3 is because there are so many people who want it, that Valve couldn't possibly make a game to their expectations.
NotTheFeesh especially after Fallout 4. So many ungrateful spoiled brats hyped that game to death and slammed it with all kinds of BS insults
+Joshua Willis Even though Fallout 4 was almost a direct downgrade from New Vegas.
nils4545 wow
I really hope this happens
A lot of people want the new Zelda. I guess Nintendo shouldn't make the new Zelda then. Stop with these lame ass excuses. You can't sit there with a straight fact and say that openly.
Fuck it, i still support Valve.
it is just a fun video you know that right?

Why didn't I watch this sooner? That last catchline had me on the floor. xD
Valve: The only company that can go from making innovative games and software, to making an entire stock market based around hyperlinked .png images what's only function is increasing an arbitrary number on users profiles, while still having their customers kiss the ground they walk on. :V
Jealous much?
Steam OS doesn't count for idiots like you I guess.
MrGiffmoney I am. I wish I could make millions of dollars by doing that.
Don't we all sir. I just detected a little animosity about it. Gota learn to control your inner communist and learn to be happy for the success of others.
MrGiffmoney No. My success. xD
I know how to release all three games into one...call it The Orange Box 2.
We need to email this to the Gaben.
Scout Carnby
We need a god damned petition
Gage Fischer Agreed.
It will be called The Steam Box. You'll see the new Half-Life and the new Left 4 Dead (and why not, maybe a new Portal [or even a new IP, who knows?] ) bundled in their machines, but they won't make it exclusively for their machines, of course.
AdventureSANANDREAS Don't you mean conga fortress? xD
but your always updating tf2
and braking it.
SkullSkillsSkates Not as much as you broke english
1 mistake.... well valve made a bit more than 1 fuck ups in tf2.
SkullSkillsSkates Which they later fix.
For example now in TF2, the minisentries aren't gods while building anymore.
when they fix it they brake more again.
We at Valve don't know how to count to 3.
If Overkill were 100% honest with us
For the love of god

"Yes yes, Senpai almir is good, but we think our community is shit and we want to be CSGO and TF2.
It really does feel like they threw away their old dedicated pre-2007 fanbase for a large more naive fanbase that are so fanatical to defend Valve on every bad decision they make.
completely, I played HL1 on release back when I was 9, and I was playing CS back on WAN, so I used to love valve
but now I can't stand them, and this is 100% why: they sold out harder than anyone ever sold out, they just like to pretend they didn't, and have legions of idiots willing to defend that because they like to buy virtual hats
That isnt the Real Gabe in the Video.. or am i wrong?
***** damn you idiot ofc its not the real one

Ville Savolainen He's done the same thing in several other comments too, just ignore him, he'll go away...
If HL3 was released, the internet would break. Literally break.
This will age like wine
We used to make games.
Now we make gloves.
"Rich as balls"
Half Life 1--------1998
Half Life 2--------2004
Half Life 3--------3???
HL3....confirmed? :/
Nope. They might be working on the new Source Engine though.
1998?????
DozzerSkits Yes,1998.
well. shit
Half Life 3-------3000
The truth is that Half Life 1 and 2 are genre defining games, that ran on an in house engine (well Source was 100% in house) and have both lasted decades, and are both still in use.
"We will probably not see Half-Life 3 on the Source engine"
Source 2's in development, so why make another engine
mcun02 We will not see Half-Life 3 on the current Source engine. Feel better now?
Video in a nutshell:
Valve: We are afraid of the number 3
Wait a second...
Half life release date 1998
Half life 2 release date 2004
that is a 6 year difference
there are 2 games
6 divided by 2=3
HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED
Dude just give it up!
Joshua Willis
You can't stop the hype bro! Can't stop the hype!

Hehehe I see what you did there
So. Fucking. Accurate.
Youre that one nasty commenter from TGWTG .. Small world
i agree

this video ages more well everyday
a company as smart as valve would recognize that they don't have to stop the steam workshop to make A game. if valve was 100% honest with us, they would do what the are doing and keep doing it.
1:28 your theroy is invalid, because the more people you give that older book the more people want the sequel
But at the same time, they're getting other people to make and sell other books while they get about half of the cash.
Theroy Jenkins?
I never thought I'd say this... but this video fits for what's happening now.
the sad part... is this video was posted 10 years ago... 😞
And for the most part it’s still relevant
@@fortynights1513 Is it?
Dude its just a joke. They didn't 'save' PC gaming, they just monopolised it so now everyone hates everything that isn't Steam.
They never said Valve is evil. They just said that they're more interested in working on Steam full-time than doing games.
K Smith "monopolized"
I guess GoG and humble bundle make no money.
CommentSection Barbarian
GoG is MUUUUUUUUUUCH smaller than Steam, and Humble Bundle pretty much just gives keys for steam and some other services. (Though, mostly Steam)
***** Then you know some massive pricks. Its for charity.
praise lord gaben!
We'll never see Half-Life 3 because it will never live up to the hype leading to some unhealthy backlash towards Steam
People will be like, "HL3 sucks! I've had it with Steam! I'm leaving"
But IF it did live up to the hype, it would be the biggest game of the century, and profit millions.
SupaMajestic Still minuscule compared to their potential profit if they just put their resources on Steam instead
+Geodetic20 If only they would put some of that in their Customer Support.
+Geodetic20 Prime example would be Duke Nukem Forever. OOOOOHHH YEAH, BABY!!!
Pretty sure hl3 was already finished they haven't released due to hype and are saving it as a last resort if the company goes down
Oh boy does this shine true 4 years later.
Artifact.
Yep, valve's dead... on the inside.
"Can you put that sentence in the form of a chart?"
This came out a decade ago
Here we are, two years and one month later.
Valve is a privately owned business and I trust them more than I trust a publicly traded company and yes, they do make money, but they provide a good service.
Thank you for having a brain.
Hi Gabe how is steam going and all that other stuff?
Trinnity Marsters Perfect, as always. What kind of answer were you expecting?
Hyperawsome plz nerf void and kick chinese teams out of dota
If HL3 isnt coming out im going to VAlVe headquarters and just make a massive shootout and yell "WHEN IS HL3 COMING OUT MODAFUCKAS?!??!?!?!?!"
lol NSA
Two Canadians actually did that....they then had a picture with Gabe Newell after being politely asked to leave....I wish I was making this up.
If you did that then almost everyone would evacuate and you may shoot the HL Team or worse...the TF team. I am still waiting for the damn comic to come.

Albiuxas 3 likes? Half-Life 3 confirmed ;)

Left 4 Dead 3 is actually been said it was in development since about October-December of 2013

@@joshuawillis602 Making games isn't that easy especially if you don't want to ruin its story(3-6 years is the average time of making a normal game).
I love Doug's gestures and intonations. Great work, Doug.
I fucking lost it at " We used to make games, now we make money" :D
This was hilarious video.
this is exactly why I wish they would just sell off the rights to the franchises. let them just be the steam company and we can still see the games come out someday.
whoever buys them would make bad(or just different-but to many people there's no difference so...) versions, and then people would somehow blame Valve for that
Zaptechz there really is no knowing that until the games come out.
typically sellouts dont go well for the product or it's fans. it would need to be exceptionally well managed to be better than before.
only valve know how to make half life right, an example is what EA done with star wars battlefront, FUCKED IT.
gabriel rodrigues I disagree. When was the last time valve released a game?
and here we are. 6 years later and valve finaly confirmed half life alyx
