      LOL, yes painfully slow but I was still smiling and laughing the whole time! It barely had enough guts to climb the big jump and that was on rechargeable nimh AA batteries! I can see why they were not beat up very much, they didn't go fast enough to get beat up!! Yes, I agree, when we were little kids these things were the coolest and fastest things we ever saw before so we were completely entertained and in love with them! It sure beats them ending up in a landfill like so many of them did. I know most of mine ended up in there. Either beaten up so bad the super glue couldn't hold it all together anymore or the electronics fried in them and I was too young to know a lot of that was easy to fix. It is also fun to clean them up and give them a run or two. They are little time capsules for me to remember back to a simpler time when a handful of AA batteries meant a couple hours of fun romping one around and then waiting a couple more weeks before mom would buy more for me! She hated these things, she called them battery eaters! To be fair in the end she probably pain as much in batteries for some of them as she did the car!!!

    I think the steering "servo" and motor being connected was the engineers solution to burning/stripping the weak servos out. It's easier to turn the wheels when its moving.

    This is so Awesome Addam! Yes, I remember those awesome toy grade RC’s with the non proportional steering and throttle. I had a Tyco turbo hopper and my friend had a Nikko Turbo aero and my gosh the steering while throttle did throw us off during Christmas morning when we whipped out our new RC’s, but got used it very quick🤣. Funny thing is a few months later my other neighborhood friend got a Sear Lobo II and he had steering without throttle which was so cool! Then again, his Lobo II was more advance than my Turbo hopper and my friends Turbo aero. His was a 1/14 scale buggy and it used a 7.2v Nicad pack and quite faster than our 1/16 scale turbo hopper and turbo aero. It was so awesome to see that his car took a rechargeable 7.2v nicad while my friend and I was still using 8AA batteries for our buggies😩. I now figured the Lobo I also took 8AA’s but was still a 1/14 buggy. The Lobo II was just awesome!😀. Man, those days were so awesome at the golden age of RC’s. A year and half I think later I know it was 88’ my dad surprised me with my very first hobby grade RC, the Tamiya Grasshopper. After that it just got so much better. Unfortunately, my turbo hopper was taken apart and my Grasshopper got all the attention. I do miss my Turbo Hopper😢. Thanks Addam for 80’s memory lane. Can’t wait to see more 80’s RC toy nostalgia!☺️ Keep up the great work!

      I had the Heads Up Turbo Hopper from Tyco back in the day and it finally got thrown away when the super glue just couldn't hold everything together any longer!!! The Lobo was a great car and was made by Nikko for Sears and was basically the same as the RadioShack Golden arrow, just with a different body shell. This was very common back then as Nikko an Tyco were making a ton of cars and offering them to other companies under their branding and body designs. They were some of the closest to hobby grade many could afford at the time too. My first was a Super Blackfoot and once I got that all other cars and trucks in the world were inferior to me! I loved that truck and pretty much drove it into pieces over a couple years of non-stop driving!

I thought something was wrong with the car or the controller but I just happened to turn the wheel and squeeze the throttle and it turned. Hey Addam, my dad brought his old 1998 RadioShack Flashtronic “High Speed Digital Proportional” RC car, and I’m trying to get it to work again. The front wheels respond and turn, but the rear wheels don’t receive any power. It’s not a problem with the battery, but I think with the receiver or transmission thing. I don’t really know what I’m doing, but I’ve been unscrewing various things to try and get to that electrical part, but the screws to the plastic cylinder thing (in the back, that the wires plug into) cannot be unscrewed for whatever reason. Do you have any suggestions or tips? Just found your channel and it’s super cool!! :)

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately these old ones are plagued with electrical gremlins. I'd say start with disassembling the remote and cleaning the contacts in there. Often they get corrosion built up. Some light sanding with 1000 grit sand paper or even just using a pencil eraser will clean them up. You can also test the power coming to the motor to make sure it is getting from the battery to the motor when the throttle is on. If the motor is getting power but not moving means fried brushes or something is stuck. If you don't get power to the motor then more than likely it was destroyed by the all too common mud puddle!!! Those circuit boards were not waterproof at all and could easily short out.
      Do some testing and get back to me. You can email me as well, email address is in my about section of the main channel page.

      @@AddamsPlayground yeh I'm contemplating whether I could strip and replace on this. They were great little cars but the 8 aa batteries is just too much wastage for me to handle now I'm not 9 years old lol 🤣

      @@_RandomPea Yeah, I know what you mean! I went through them like crazy as a kid but Now I hate using them as it feels so wasteful! I'd have to crack mine open again to see what would fit in there but I am sure it would not be too hard to strip it and install modern gear. My only concern may be the steering servo but I am pretty sure it is like the rest of them and a low profile with a Tamiya servo saver will drop right in. I will have to pull one apart again and check. Now I am curious!

      They put out a lot of neat cars and trucks back in the day. A lot of them can be upgraded to modern electronics with some tinkering but some are just too bespoke to fit modern gear without a ton of re-engineering! You can still find deals on them from time to time on eBay.

      Yeah this steering is the weirdest thing ever! I have never had a car that the steering stops when you let off the throttle. I guess it is a good thing it is not faster than it is or it would be a real handful to drive!! I can live with the click clack, non-proportional steering but loosing it all together when not on the throttle is kind of sketchy!!

    I can sympathize with the Porsche…there is a significant clunk in my rear end too. On the buggy, it looks like there is a nut captured in the wheel? Is there a ‘hubcap’ that spins off to remove the wheels? Did you try stern language and shaking your fist to get the wheels off??? Just doing my part of being an armchair mechanic! 👍

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground 2 роки тому +1

      I was baffedl by it as it looks like a nut but it is captured in the wheel. I did not want to break anything so I chose to leave it be. Thad commented below that in his video of the frame buggy he shows how to get them off so I have go back and watch that and see about popping them off. I think I may take the time and try and speed up one of them but that will be a little ways down the road, I have a ton of other stuff coming up! More RadioShack stuff, more Tamiya stuff, more crawler stuff, I also have some Amazon RCs coming up too so a little bit of everything!!!
