I always kept my commonplace books as an overarching compendium of knowledge tailored to what my interests are, with a subsection relevant to quotes. People don't realize just how much knowledge you gain from forums, messages and conversations, but can become quickly lost or muddled due to memory. I've done this multiple times as well as accompanying sketches when it came to fountain pens, Submarines, art, aeronautic and automotive mechanics. It's a beautiful piece of literature that I actually routinely check with as a refresher as well to teach myself again on what I forgot or have "frazzled"
I feel like for me the reflection mostly takes place in my actual journal. I use my commonplace to collect the knowledge, and then I go back to it when I want to reflect on it. I love seeing how different people have applied the concept of a commonplace book. The one thing I do differently is I don’t collect knowledge for improvement, it usually happens anyway, but just because I enjoy it. 😊
This is an awesome video. I really appreciate it. I read so much classical literature, and a whole range of genres and topics within non-fiction and, often times, i simply highlight and move on, knowing i want to elaborate how i think and feel about the information, but never imagining i should use a journal to do so. i usually flesh my ideas out in school papers i have to turn in
Totally eye-opening, thanks. I have been writing down reams of quotes for about 4 years, but will now alter and deepen my approach in this way starting now. I imagine, though, it might be some time before I can resist the temptation to first copy down the original quote exactly (we should be paraphrasing) before moving on to my own thoughts about it.
Your video is such a breath of fresh air! I always kept personal journals and notebooks for specific interests but now I am going to attempt to keep a Commonplace Notebook - being a writer and avid reader myself. I also love Oscar Wilde so this video grabbed my attention from start to finish - thank you for your research and sharing this!
What a delightful find you are. I have very much enjoyed this content. This is the best direction I've heard regarding Commonplace Books. I'm on board. I'm going to start trying these suggestions. Thank you!
Hi - Thank you for this video. I like the idea of writing down the quote and then exploring why it resonated with me - or as part of a critique. Thank you also for the link to Oscar Wilde's commonplace notebooks.
THAT'S IT! That is exactly it! You see, I've only from common place notebooks last year and I thought it was a wonderful thing to have. So I watched tutorials and I was very excited about making one. However, I wasn't excited anymore because if I wanted an encyclopedia, I would have bought one in the nearest bookshop. In other words. It was soulless. That's what was missing and I was waiting for someone to explain me exactly that and thank you, my dear Mr Wilde, wherever you may be for your enlightenment.
I love your channel. The website sounds fantastic. I recently went back through some of my notebooks and discovered I had been commonplacing for a long time without knowing it!
Thank you so much! Are there any tips of how you keep your own journal that you would like to share? I would love to hear the process. (I'm a nerd after all!)
I just can't get enough of your videos, thank you so much! I have learned a great deal and have put those ideas into action in my own journals and commonplace books.❤
@VashikArmenikus I was initially drawn to your videos on journalling and commonplace books, but I have since expanded that to include your videos on the Stoics and your favorite books/authors. My favorite video by far was on Oscar Wilde. You gave insight on him that was very unique and inspiring. I would love to see more of that type in the future. Thanks again for all that you do for us! ❤️
This was so helpful to me, thankyou. I've so many books of quotes and snippets that I've hoarded, and this has shown me how to move forward and use them, so thankyou!
Hello from Turkey! I really like your videos. I hope you can get even more views and popularity over time. The videos are really helpful and you seem like a very kind person! : )
@MyBookishHeart Thank you so much for your kind words! And once more congratulations on well-deserved 1000 subs! Your content is gold and I'm looking forward to congratulating you with your 10,000 subs soon!
I first came across your videos and newsletters a few months ago while looking for information about a new documentary on Umberto Eco. I have enjoyed all the videos and newsletter recommendations. I have already bought several and have more on my wait list. Please them coming. 👍
Thank you so much Jack! It's so inspiring to hear and see this community grow :) I wish there was a chat space where every book lover could join and talk :) I was thinking to use Substack for that. Are you by any chance registered there?
I did join Substack recently. I am trying to figure out how to navigate my way. There is just SO MUCH good stuff there. I check your posts each morning. Gets my day started with a high.

hello! I loved your video but I have questions. What is the difference between a Journal, Commonplace book and a diary And we need to write into 3 notebooks at the same time?
It's hard to answer it fully in a comment. Diary is focused on daily record of events, journal is focused not on dates but on thoughts/experiences, while commonplace book is where you gather thoughts from books. I answer this question in more detail on my patreon www.patreon.com/posts/1-what-is-diary-88554106
It is nice to understand how Oscar worked in his journals, however I don't believe we should add rules to our own journals/commonplace book. Some of these sound like tasks they make you do at school that feel laborious and so we lose the joy of writing for ourselves.

I think one SHOULD copy down the exact quote if only to be able to appreciate and study a pithy turn of phrase.
Also- referencing exact quotes essential in essays etc

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject, I learned something new today! ❤
Oscar Wildes Commonplace Notebook sold for 70k and Post Malone bought a Magic: The Gathering for 2 million… am I missing something?
People are willing to spend ludicrous amounts of money on things that have only sentimental value
@@anibal5845 true! I’m just surprised that Wildes commonplace didn’t hold more sentimental value?
