They are not arguing against what the government are doing because they are rich and trying to avoid paying even more tax. The changes to systems and the £40m tax grab is affecting ordinary people's lives and livelihoods, and the government isn't listening - that is what people are up in arms about. Have you not been following the news...? Signing a petition is not undemocratic, it is a way to try to get something changed, to have your voice heard. While Andrew Marr is right that all governments go through periods of unpopularity, and petitions shouldn't be used to get rid of them - but this is a first, which goes to show how deeply people feel about what they are doing, and that they are not being listened to. Democracy - government of the people by the people, but not this government...
Hyperbole and lies. If it's 'nothing' why is Marr so freaked out and clutching at his pearls with such squealing hysteria? Me thinks the lady doth protest too much. He knows this government stinks, and "We let them get on with it" - spoken like a true sucker, and like someone who wishes to silence opposition. I am sure he was so even-keeled about Trump, right?
I don't think it matters how many people sign the petition it will not alter the result or mean another election or deter the govt from doing what they think. is right.
We have a parliamentary system but what is the purpose of manifestos and the ministerial code if they can be ignored and nothing holds MPs to account. That does sound like tyranny to me.
I'm not a huge fan of Elon Musk or Donald Trump but it seems to me, just from the people I speak to, that many people feel completely let down by this new government. To move the focus to Farage, Musk and Trump and how outrageous it is seems to me to miss the point that the level of discontent with this government is especially high and yet again we have msm creating A narrative rather than THE narrative.
Petitions are meaningless about disapproval of govts. We could have had a petition every month for the last 100 years if that was the case. Still it keeps people off the streets. I may start a petition to ban petitions.
Funnily you have always been allowed to dissent the government without being locked up. The people arrested over the summer were due to statements made to incite violence. Freedom of speech requires some modecum of decency and truthfulness
The proposed 2nd EU referendum was completely undemocratic and was only suggested by MP's who didn't like the way that the people had voted. < 12 seconds in and he's already telling lies about Farage 🙄
The Guardianistas are completely obsessed with him.
Wrong, Nigel Farage did not initiate this petition
Pity
Andrew Marr is out of date and place. This bent labour man needs to listen to people.
It does count to vote for on this petition, total number of votes Labour got was 9,660,000, i the petition get more then it is proof we need a referendum on Proportional Representation. Go Sign!
No it isn't, PR is not even on this petition, and signing a petition is not a vote. You're advocating for chaos and encouraging people not to take their vote seriously. Do proper research before you vote in an election because your vote does have consequences.
Andrew please get your facts right the petition was not put up by Nigel Farage
A brexit petition got more signatures. So anyone who thinks this petition means another election, then you must support another vote on brexit. Or you're such a hypocrite.
We want our rights back
So 2 million of the 6.8 million who voted Tory want to rerun the election? Well 9.7 million voted Labour. A much larger difference than the Brexit vote. So let’s have a vote on rejoining the EU first.
@@chris5706 isn't it funny any call to have a 2nd referendum was undemocratic. But when it suits them, they call for the 2nd vote to get the result they want 🤣🤣
You would cry about the result again you are the minority here
@@petelawless811 Lol really? Over 68% of the country polled want to rejoin. You're the minority, it's basic maths. Let me guess, you voted For the UK mAGA reform company plc business not political party??
Can't fault that logic, I'm game!
If 6 million can sign a petition and it be dismissed, then so can this.
Unfortunately, like with the lib Dems in 2010, we're stuck with this parliament.
It's still better than the last 14 years to me.
There's much to be said in favour of your final remark. I am convinced that someone is putting rohypnol in the water because the complainants of today have either very short or no memories at all of the 14 years of self-serving, snouts in the trough tories who were only interested in themselves. They brought the country to it's knees but on the plus side, Boris got a new kitchen. So there's that.
@@grahammatthews5835Blair and brown actually brought this country to its knees. These two imbeciles in all but name bankrupted us and that's the fundamental reason the Tory/lib dem coalition had to implement austerity measures. If we hadn't done so world bodies such as the IMF would have downgraded the UK's finances which would have made it harder and more expensive to borrow money to fund infrastructure projects etc.
Totally agree and regardless of who took over, they would have had the same problems of clearing up the Tory mess. There is a lot of 💩🥄 going on right now by a certain person, because his buddy in the us somehow won an election, which is totally baffling!
@@grahammatthews5835 How far does your memory go back, take a look beyond the Tories, not such a pretty picture, the UK left so close to bankruptcy and labour laughing about it (we are still paying for it) then the chinese covid period (we are still paying for it) A selective memory can be useful but it only tell half the truth, and the truth is that both political parties are in for themselves (and their mates) neither seem to give a s,,, for the people of this country.
Year 2008 was fantastic 😅
We had 6 million votes to remain in the EU. The 2 million petition is what we got to fill in the potholes in Doncaster
6 million remoaners.
6m in 6 months, 2m in 2 days, hmmm.
@ fin. It doesn't matter how many sign it. It's a pointless exercise just to embarrass a govt which isn't even doing that. 67%of people didn't vote for this govt. That's what happens when you have fpp. This petition should be about P R not moaning about 4 month old govt.
The EU petition ran for 6 months. This has been 2 days. Have a little patience......
@stuc. Irrelevant.

Can we have a petition to go back into the EU? Can we have a petition to send Farage to Rwanda? And finally, can we have a petition to send the 2 million people who have signed that petition to Russia?
Ha ha ha ha ......aaaaaaaah ha ha ha. YES ! Go ahead and have all those petitions . A tiny , almost zero % British people will sign them .
Can we have a petition to get rid of every illegal immigrant and stop anyone putting us back in the EU
No.
Let's just wait until the whole bloc turns to the right. Then we can rejoin.
It's not tyranny, but you want to depart millions who disagree with you. The left have lost the plot, monstrous.
LBC lie, Michael Westwood started petition.
Yes it can be ignored. The Tories ignored a petition three times larger to cancel brexit.
You could ignore the fridge but clearly you don’t
And you're still crying about that?
@@martinwyke The Soviets knew exactly what life was like under a centralised system of government that operated under mostly fake and distant democracy.
It suprises me just how many people would like to live in such a system. Luckily, the majority of the UK rejected it.
Sadly, Starmer's government want an even bigger system of centralised government, with a heavy socialist bent, in the form of the UN.
Well they need to be held accountable, they work for us not other way round, and being told to shut up when the country is falling to sh* t
Let suggest a petition for a re-run of the presidential election.
Bet even those who voted for this shower have deep regrets.
Lets keep the pressure on
The petition was started by an ordinary British man . Niether Elon Musk nor Nigel Farage had anything to do with it until they saw how quickly millions have signed it and like many people they are now commenting on it . If anyone ( including you Mr Marr ) has proof either was involved please post it up quickly for us all to see . Thank you .

Populist politics shouldn't overide a democratic system, tough decisions shouldn't be pertitioned away to suit the rich and powerful tax avouding minority.
Which part of the ruling party having 62% MPs, on only 35% of the vote, in an election that had a turnout shy of 60% is democratic?

Populism is democracy. You're anti democracy by that statement and i wouldn't expect any less from principlessless lefties who only seek power.

Comrade Starmer rules with an iron fist with a quarter of the vote.
Incredible Andrew you don’t even know the facts reference who started the petition
Musk would go ballistic if we the British had the timerity to suggest such a petition to remove Trump and Himself.
Just hope it doesn't go above 10 million. Then there's problems. The People know the petition does nothing.
That doesn't make sense.
@DLTapped please tell me why.
I don't think it matters how many people sign the petition it will not alter the result or mean another election or deter the govt from doing what they think. is right.
Get yr facts right, Marr. It wasnt got up by farage.
Its 2.5 million and rising, see what it amounts to this time next week, Marr!
I used to watch Marr on Sundays. But after his stoke, apart from his physical condition it also affected his brain
Unpopular is different from being hated as Starmer is.
I most definitely would vote for a party that would take us back to the EU, I would want little to do with President Musk and his VP Trump,

Vladimir Putin probably doesn't even know who Keir Starmer is.
We have a parliamentary system but what is the purpose of manifestos and the ministerial code if they can be ignored and nothing holds MPs to account. That does sound like tyranny to me.
They're not being ignored.

I wonder how many people who signed this petition said we shouldn't have a 2nd EU referendum?...
The proposed 2nd EU referendum was completely undemocratic and was only suggested by MP's who didn't like the way that the people had voted.
The reason that this is not comparable is because the whole Labour election manifesto has proven to be a lie and Stammer has Done drastic things that nobody was expecting. Not even his muppet voters

It would be extremely easy to have everyone voting on the Internet, acting as politicians, shaping the country
Except that wouldn't be democracy, but the tyranny of the majority (or plularity). Democracy is supposed to take account of the minority viewpoint
Farage the man who said that the Brexit referendum was not best out of three. Pathetic. Musk stay out of our nations business.
A similar petition in previous years would have had similar results! Obviously people are unhappy they’re party didn’t win but that’s democracy so it doesn’t matter what number the petition reaches Labour are in for 4 years - voted in by the majority - get over it!
