This one is all about the groove. Which is a weird thing to say about a Phil Lesh bass part, but '74 and '76 Scarlet had more of a funky, in the pocket groove, where '77 is that loose, reggaeish vibe, especially with those ridiculous slides like Cornell. Great lesson on a great bass part on one of the Dead's very best songs.
Jeff, could you please post a video showing how to play bass for Tennessee Jed? I could not find any good tutorials, and this one is very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks guitar 30 years just bought a bass and love the dead you have a great way of teaching folks man hope your page grows and grows if I’m looking for a song and I see you I click on it!💥thanks for the lesson
Thank you , I subscribed, I play in a band that does some Dead tunes, I played mostly reggae and rock before. We do Fire so we should definitely give the crowd Scarlett too. So thank you
Awesome lesson! I feel it's so rare to see a lesson that incorporates theory so we know why we're playing what we're playing. Great job, man!
Thanks Joe, glad it's helpful!
Came here to learn this for Phil, RIP legend!
I just heard the news. So sad.
Super helpful. Perfect way to teach a Phil bass line.
Glad it was helpful James!
Very much appreciate this! will subscribe

Plus I have been to many Grateful Dead shows, and most modern incarnations and JGB before and after . It's really fun to play it now
Mix it up, Sugaree> Fire On the Mountain works really well, too.
Perfect timing - we were just talking about doing this! thanks man
Any time!

Helpful, Thanks man!
Glad it helped!
Your Jazz Bass sounds absolutely fantastic. Would you please describe how you get your tone?
Thanks Bob. I'm recording direct in a US Apollo and using a Ampeg B15N modeled.
Cool dude thx
Any time
I dont think Phil Lesh even has a 'bass line' for this song beyond jamming mixollydian on the root notes of the specific spot. Which isnt a bad thing!
Is that white snoop dogg?
