This is the guy to uplift. He summarizes the political economy of the last 75 years perfectly from the left perspective.
Politically, capital controls may be the way to refocus attention away from the movement of people across borders to the movement of capital across borders, and the effect the latter has on the former.
Here’s a policy corollary to his emphasis on capital controls being used to fight globalization: Tariffs on all non-union exports and imports. If goods aren’t certified as union-made by the port authority, a duty is charged. Revenue can fund a domestic apprenticeship program run by the unions.
You call that policy ‘Fair Trade’, sell it hard to workers, and that will be first inoculation against global capital’s Market Tyranny.

Super interesting subject. A 4th year level course in Comparative Economic Systems or History of Economic Thought will cover many of these topics. The big difference (in my experience taking courses in both economics and political science): Economists are very cautious in making claims. The basic approach is "We don't really know, but here is some possible fundamental tools that make be useful to analyze the problem, and possible build some models to measure it". Someone making sweeping statements covering a vast range of subjects that no single person could understand in a lifetime, is that academic dishonesty, or much needed creative thinking that is needed to break out of old thinking. It would be hard to understand how corporations actually make decisions, however, without at least a fairly advanced courses in Corporate Finance and Corporate Law

Great synopsis of the growth of capitalism, and neoliberalism, Steve. Thanks. I remember, a few years ago, I saw a video with David Harvey, where he used the term - "the working class has been defeated," and I think this video explains the "defeat" very well. As always, it is up to the working class to take up the mantle of class struggle.
