Horizontal migration worm bin

- I've been wanting to do make one of these for a few months, last week the right confluence of events allowed me to do just that. A horizontal migration worm bin works along the same principle as a stacking system but instead of adding trays of feedstock and the worms migrating up, I add food to a side chamber and the worms migrate to the side. It allows more surface area because the weight is no longer an issue, which allows me to process more materiel faster. Also being made of wood allows it to breathe so I'll have less moisture problems than I would with a plastic system.
I do the very same thing with a Rubbermaid bin. I feed one side for X number of weeks. Then stop feeding till they finish things off. Then start feeding the other side and harvest the other side after they all move over. You will always have some in the castings no matter what. Gives me the opportunity to get out the eggs for a private nursery also.
Very nice horizontal migration worm bin!
OneYardRevolution Thanks Patrick!
Nice bin, two sections is the way to go. I thought 3 would be better but it is more of a pain.
You need a lot more bedding. You would be amazed at how much it breaks down. I had 6 inches on top and in 2 months it was gone. I would add 6-8x more paper to the bottom.
Very interesting. I look forward to your update.
I subscribed. i raise new zealands and composting red wigglers
Did the same. My cedar chest is a lane with the plug in the bottom. Are you having moisture problems as well? The cedar chest seems to be soaking up any moisture and as a result is warping and coming apart at the corner edges. Bedding is not soaking wet just enough to keep bedding from a dry state.
Katrina Tate I cant say that I am. I actually haven't put the bin into use yet, it got bedding and food and a handful of worms but I haven't moved it inside yet so the worms died off in the cold. However its been rained and snowed on a few times in the past 3 months and is none the worse for wear. If the corners are a problem get some inexpensive ratchet straps and use them to hold the box together, I had to do that a few years ago with a fish tank i was using in a small aquaponics set up and it worked for months till I could afford to replace the tank.
Did the worms ever make it in? :)
specialk22tt unfortunately not yet, haven't finished the insulation in the rabbitry so haven't been able to take it inside.
update please
