Mr. Belafonte stands his ground! That shouldn't surprise anyone. He has always been more than what you see on the surface. To begin with, his social commitments and political activism were never self-serving. Conversely, however, Jay Z , Beyonce, et al seem to me to be the antithesis of someone like Belafonte. He sacrificed a lot ... he could have been a mega movie star if he had been a laid-back, part-time political activist. Today's punk moguls will never be his equals.
    God bless Belafonte!

I agree with HB 1000%. There are tons of athletes and entertainers today who care more about white patronage than they do the liberation of their people and that's sad. On that note I want to give mad props to John Carlos and Tommy Smith. To me they are real Black heroes!!

Jay Z is just about the money he is a commercial artist.. Think about this he sold drugs to his people before he became a rapper so why do you think that mentality would change. Let the rappers be the rappers and the real Men need to step up.

Thank you, Harry! There is not an ounce of malice, hated or disrespect in his accounting, nor, in his critique of today's "artists". If anyone can look at the grandstanding, and selfish, materialistic behavior of these young people and say that they show and honor their responsibility to those, like Harry, who paved the way for them to do "as they please", then we are doomed. I refuse to believe that it is hopeless. We are at a very crucial time of transition. There is always hope.

I respect his position because no one can truly give argument to this man and the struggle his witnessed, with great blatancy. Jay-Z and Beyonce are people who were blessed with a talent, but grew up in a society that isn't necessarily asking for progression of Black people but what sells and what appeals to an audience. I am that neither one of these artists had children out of wed lock. I believe in the struggle but society has reduced it to making lots of money.

It's so sad, we tend to prescribe traits such as intelligence, wit and eloquence to people that are financially well off. If you look at the rich history of African-Americans who entertain professionally like Miles or Bird or Sassy or Lady Day, Jay Z and Beyonce are rather marginal at best.

You made some great points. I'm straddling the fence on what Mr. Belafonte said. Just to add on comment, a conversation should have been held between the two, think about it, Jay Z is at a level that no other MC has met. Some type of mentoring should be involved; with that mentoring Jay can go in the direction he see's fit. Now the other side, a relationship has been fractured because of a lack of communication. I hope they can pull it together.

I dont believe the hip hop culture, as a whole, is mature enough to appreciate what Harry is talking about. Black artists and athletes today, whether they recognize this or not, are benefiting wildly from the struggle and angst of our predecessors. Most don't acknowledge a stuggle until tragedy hits...but tragedy within our community happens daily. Today, our prominent role models are comfortable with lots of cash; the status that comes with being a prominent figure, but have forgotten their voices, their mettle, and extinguished their inspired flame in the name of comfort...affluence...excess...

Mr. Belafonte is correct. Our celebrities are not using their talent to illuminate or reveal the struggle of our people. Now do J&B fall into the category... in a way yes they do. Do we make our icons responsible for the messages they send out into the world that directly effect how our women are perceived and our men are treated my law enforcement. Our celebrities are role models for our children who are shaped by their music, movies and influence on our culture. I applaud J&B for changing.

He's not taking anything personally. In Harry's time, Black entertainers were outspoken about Black causes and issues. Early Hip hop was full of stories about the struggle in the Black community. Jay Z (along with Beyonce) can very much be outspoken about these issues in his music if he's not comfortable with public speaking or being the head cheerleader of a Black cause. James Brown had a song called "(Say It Loud) Black and Proud".

The responsibility falls not only on the shoulders of famous artists, but unknown artists as well. I am a character designer and I incorporate African Americans as well as whites into my designs. Are they pimps, hustlers and gangsters? No. They are heroes of all types, just like the white counterparts. Art is our voice. How we are represent ourselves "speak" volumes about how we are.

I Love Nas and ultimately he was probably doing a good thing by showing us that two rappers with a conflict can peacefully end their conflict. But I wish he had broken Jay-z's back when he had the chance. There was a brief moment when Jay-Z was exposed as the 2nd class artist that he really is. Nas wanted to be altruistic. Unfortunately the rest of us have to keep living with Jay-Z's presence.

So, the issue here, is that instead of speaking directly to, Jay-Z and BeyonCE (lol), he chose the media, which was Jay's "problem" with how it went down.
Jay Z, instead of checking original context of the comment, spoke on how he felt, about the comments in which he responded "you don't know all the shit I do for the homies"...which is true. You cannot expect today's black celebs, to have the same heart for activism, as you. different time, less blatant bigotry. Instead, GO TO JAY Z and TEACH

My criticism with Mr. Belafonte is not his statement on the present day lack of activism through the arts but his lack of commitment to the black family. With all due respect I find it quite revealing he did not marry a black woman. He talk liberation and being so committed but yet he could not commit to a black woman and marry one. Furthermore, his latest documentary, Sing a Song was directed by a white woman. Yes, his biracial daughter was the executive producer but you mean to tell me he could not find not one black filmmaker to direct his documentary? A lot of black men during his time married white women. Many blacks talked behind closed doors about it. However, I want to be clear, I can careless who he marries. but just wondering why go so hard for liberation but not hard enough to keep the black family together.

In his interview he says Jayz and Beyoncé ( HLN) today's generation does not think that owe the community. They are out for self... My own opinion. As for the white women, BLACK women has had black men's back and have carried them for such a long time( some seem to forget) for them to smack us in our faces to have a white women on their arms is just an insult. Not all black women are the same just like white. We are involved with the community and take care of our bodies, give back all those things. Some not all just as white women. I've seen it first hand in college just about all my girlfriends beat the dirt with a black guy to help him (them) get to where they needed to be and they left them for a white chick. I'm just saying, this is my opinion so don't get mad at me getting your boxers in a bunch.

      GREAT POST

so because he married a white woman all his contributions, his works and his sacrifices should all be for naught and the brothers who married their sisters, who couldn't give a shit about their communities, gets a free pass. Explain, because to me that is bullshit.
Black people need to get over themselves over this nonsense about who you should get married to and be in a relationship with. If I'm involved with a woman who possess the positive qualities I admire in a woman and she happens to be white I'm stick with her. She and any other woman of any other race that is beautiful both inside and out I will stick it out with

IN the post he seems to articulate that he did not single out Jay-z and Beyonce. So what was so harsh about his general commentary about the social activism or lack there of involving black celebrities?

why all the hate , Harry was raised by his WHITE Grandmother in Jamaica, he have done more for the Afro-american cause than any celebrities living or dead, he can marry anyone he chooses. Somebody built the ladder that Jay-Z uses to get where he is, therefor he should Not tear it Down or pull it up. Try that one on for size !!

So Jay-Z has to put his career on the line & take a stance on politics because an older guy who is interested in politics wants him too? Eloquence is fine, but lack of logic is clear here.

@Jordan Sharpe the funny thing is that he mentioned the lack of black struggle in music, when you can argue that these rappers rapping about Street life are in a way talking about black liberation struggle in America.

So, the issue here, is that instead of speaking directly to, Jay-Z and BeyonCE (lol), he chose the media, which was Jay's problem with how it went down.

It's funny how Belefonte, a black, intellectual. ARTIST is a crab in the barrel and "bitter old scab" because he speaks the truth. The real crabs in the barrel are the performers(not to be confused with artists) who sell perverse music about drugs, violence and reckless sex to a broken community that is full to the brim with fatherless boys and girls. Said performers(not to be confused with artists) then go on to make millions, with which they do nothing except brag about the cars and mansions they can purchase. THOSE are the real crabs in a barrel.
