Then it shouldn’t have been made, people need to stop saying film is dead because people didn’t want to see a sequel to a movie that most people didn’t want to see the first one.
**BLADE RUNNER: 2049** is likely the best and most expensive art film of 2017. I saw the movie on the opening day showing at the largest theatre is downtown Vancouver... the theater was about 70% full... and once the film started not a whisper was heard... just the occasional wrinkle of a bag of popcorn... it was clear that those who showed up were fully engaged by the movie. Personally, I'm convinced that this movie won't have a problem recovering it's total costs as a 'slow burn' in the longer term... but that may not save the studio.
I think it's a bad comparison between Blade Runner and Star Wars. If people were given a blockbuster friendly movie, it would be forgotten by people who care about the original.
I doubt it. If they added some simple action and shorten the run time, this film would have replay value. It's too long. Nothing but talking heads. And the plot isn't something to relate too... which is why now I understand most blockbusters are about the forcedw indoctrination in to war.
Ricardo Rios Its definitely different, and giving it the blockbuster treatment betrays the tone of Blade Runner 1982. And I bet if they commercialized the sequel, people might actually reject it as misrepresenting the original.
Blade Runner 2049 made good numbers for a 3 hour sci-fi movie, but I still don't understand how they gave them 150+ million dollars. It's baffling to be honest, it had box office fail written all over it
I think the two biggest problems with Blade Runner are that it doesn't have a built in audience and that the trailers didn't give ANYTHING away. You gotta hook em with *something* , but those trailers pretty much only catered to people who were *already* excited for the movie
actually i thought the trailers just weren't that good. Im actually okay if trailers give away no story actually,...i think that is a good thing...but the way the trailers were put together...the music even was just not that good. They needed a GOOD musical score, and they needed to choose way better shots and editing if they wanted to make decent trailers to hook people who've never seen the first movie.
I've said it before, I'll say it again: cyberpunk is not a money-making genre. The only time a cyberpunk film has actually managed to be remotely successful has been The Matrix, which presents its ideas in a very accessible package. You can tune out the dialogue and still have fun with that movie, and its filled with spectacle-style action, not so for Blade Runner, GITS, or BR2049. I don't know why people thought that this film would break the trend.
+OddTillTheEnd You're right, cyberpunk is limited in its appeal, so you better make it on a tight budget. Blade Runner 2049 was made for a ridiculous $150-185 million. Guess how much The Matrix was made for? $63 million.
Wow, that's stunning. And the original Blade Runner was made for 28 million. Maybe if they'd gone a more noir route with this new film and done everything in shadows, small, intimate, reused, practical sets and lots of fog, it could've been a little profitable.
Did she really say many people didn't enjoy La La Land, one of the most critically acclaimed movies of last year and a literal Oscar winner.... What is she even talking about..
Erik Nilsson ehh. I would say it's mostly just diehard fans of the original trilogy that disliked TFA. the general public and critics alike loved it even with its flaws.
You can't say Ridley is destroying his property with Blade Runner 2049. This movie will be appreciated by the same kind of people that liked the first one. Blade Runner was never a movie that intended to be liked by everyone, and changing that would be the true offense to Ridley's legacy.

1:50 that’s such bullshit you do realize that you not liking la la land doesn’t equal to the minority right? The reason that it made so much money was because everyone loved it
Wow, I just don't get people though I admit I was part of that 86% who watched Blade Runner 2049 this weekend (male over 35). I can't stop thinking about the movie. It was spellbinding for me.
I love Bladerunner 2049. But when I hear 150 million budget WTF!!!!! They didn't need to spend that much. I wish I could experience a third movie but I have a feeling its never gonna see the day of light
It is odd how ALCON avoided reaching out to the small but dedicated fan base that has been waiting 35 years for anything. This group could have been used by ALCON to generate NEW fans. The original is mainly a male demographic due to when it came out and the cine-file and film making community raising BLADE RUNNER to genius status in film making with IN camera SFX. The film making community that likes to GEEK OUT on Blade Runner has been mostly male till recent years, thus not appealing to a non tech female audience.
The Mountain Between Us was a very weak film and I'm a sucker for those types of films. Terrible and predictable ending, and there was no climax to the film.
Wesley W can you (with a spoiler warning) tell me what it ends with. The movie won’t be coming out in my country and I really wanna know what happens to them 🙂
Thomas Mann Good! I'm not a mainstream film goer either except for a few films that I am actually in to. Justice League is the only mainstream film left out of only 3 this year for me. BR2049 was awesome!!!
I am going to watch Star Wars, Thor, Justice League... these movies are nice for the 2 hours but thats it. But I really really appreciate movies that take their time to develope a character, real and good dialogues and I do not mind slow camera moves with great light and shadow. A movie that may not give you all the answers and ends after the credits and is not the begining of a decade of spin-offs, sequels etc... :D
Well.. in a world were people just have enough brain capacity to enjoy viral meme compilations and Logan Paul can be on Jimmy Kimmel.. I'm not surprised at all that they walked out. Denis makes art.. but some people prefer trash.
Sedah Senrot Exactly, " How come a movie less good than the original masterpiece could be one." It's all opinion. It's not as if 2049 is bad. Everyone can agree it is either better or as good as the original but not worst. If it is as good then it also can be a masterpiece.
Let's hope the international box office saves Blade Runner 2049, though 400M$ worldwide seems unlikely at this point. I wonder how much rebuys of the original can make it break even for the studios.
That was based on very few markets. No UK, Germany, France, Spain, Japan or China in those figures. goto Box office mojo and you can see the actual breakdown.
I love Blade Runner 2049, but I think this analysis is spot-on, especially in regards to the lack of diversity in the film. I hope Denis Villeneuve continues to make these fantastic sci-fi movies though, Arrival is still one of my favorite movies.
Film art Interview With the Vampire: A story about the supernatural being the way to separate movement from hierarchy Nocturnal Animals: A story about death and beauty being the same Alien Covenant: A story about evolution meaning to link movement and skill to regression Batman & Robin: A story about nothing experiencing pain because everything is subject to the same experience Flatliners (1990): A story about self-awareness having the right to detach itself from its own history It (2017): A story about the link between movement and alienation being an obstacle to balance being a peaceful force
Elba would not change the ethnicity of bond. Craig and Elba share the same ethnicity. Elba would change the RACE of the character. People need to learn about the difference between Ethnicity and Race.
Though visually stunning you could have cut at least 30 minutes of the movie and still leave every scene in the final cut that's how long some of the shots were. It's a movie made for enthusiasts of the medium not the casual Super-Hero-Cinema-Goers...
Jay Kelley wtf? No it wouldn't. We have certifiable proof that Green lantern isn't a draw. I could really see a green lantern and flash movie with Idris Elba and Ezra Miller though. Idris would be the perfect straightman to Ezra.
So youre saying that Hulk is going to doom the Thor movie? Hulk was a flop. Changed the actor and now everyone loves him. This is either true or its not.
Unless they figure out a way to make Green Lantern's powers not look too cartoonish, it might turn into a complete reflection of the Ryan Reynolds incarnation.
Blade Runner has a fanbase. A tiny, obnoxious, loud fanbase that just repeat the word masterpiece over and over when you point out the MANY flaws present.
It's difficult because I feel art has value. For example RKO were offered double the budget of Citizen Kane to burn the negative by William Randolph Hearst. The studio could've caved in and we would have lost one of the biggest influences on cinema. That being said I do agree that total creative freedom is potentially very dangerous as we've seen with the Wachowskis, M Night Shamyalan etc. As with anything in life balance can be achieved and I think the key is to know when to take the risk and when to play it safe.
You know what really grinds my gears-that Blade Runner 2049(a scifi masterpiece) will perform poorly at the box office, while that overrated sci-fi crap called Star Wars:The Last Jedi will come out December and make close to 2 billion worldwide 😒
Well you are comparing a cult classic not so well known film (1982s Blade Runner) to a overwhelmingly popular franchise that spans decades. Sadly Star Wars is just more popular and well known. You can't really expect people to go see a movie that had a 35 year gap in between both film even if the film is totally amazing.
The reason why Blade Runner 2049 is tanking is because it is a slow pondering piece of shit that focuses on existential thoughts and ideas about what defines us as humans and Star Wars: The Last Jedi will make a shitload of money is because it is a fast packed sci-fi action popcorn movie that people will want to see for there is not much thinking involved.
I really enjoy your reviews Grace. They are always so thoughtful, smart, enthusiastic, and on-point. I really liked the new Blade Runner movie, it was full of jaw-dropping beautiful and poignant moments, but like you said it wasn't a smart business decision. The amount of money that was invested was baffling to imagine when considering the risks of destroying an entire company and tanking such investors contributions. I'm still thrilled to see how well "It" has been doing too. I really hope they don't screw up the sequel. Anyways, you're awesome Grace. Keep up the great work!
ok so Wikipedia gives the movie's budget as 150 million to *185 million*, damn they gave that much money to a sequel for a film that hardly anyone watched when it came out... I feel bad for them to a degree but the fact no one told them to revise what they were doing reminds of the Star Wars Prequels, except that those did make money
It may have flopped. But I wouldn't change a thing. The movie is one of the best I have seen in years. Audiences are the problem. Not Blade Runner 2049
joseph robinson it does have a fan base it's just not the size of Star Wars or marvel she should have specified she meant it didn't have a large enough fan base
I don't see how people weren't entertained by Blade Runner 2049. I watched it on 3 hours of sleep in 48 hrs and didn't bat an eye. Great film but has it flaws please go check it out guys I need more films with this ambition.
people dont want to think when they go to watch a movie, they see movies simply as entertainment and thats it, just something you sit back to and enjoy some explosions and mindless action, this is whats wrong with the majority of movie goers
SQUEAK SQUEAK SQEAK SENORA GRACE! - Hi grace, since arguably the hottest men in hollywood aren't box office draws. What does it take to be a box office draw today besides being a major franchise/disney princess??!!!! Thanks so much for answering. I love your channel!
My predictions for the weekend: 1. Happy Death Day ($20 million) 2. The Foreigner ($15 million) 3. Blade Runner 2049 ($14 million) 4. IT ($4 million) 5. Marshall ($3 million)
Roman Natale Justice League hasn't had any social media reactions yet. There was no press screening for the film yet, so you're wrong. Don't know why you had to make this about DC
Your insight on the subject of money and art is the best out there. I can't believe you haven't hit the 1mil subscribers mark, yet. You will, but considering how informative and interesting all your videos are, why aren't you there already!
It hurts that you call them “mistakes”, Grace. Not a mass audience movie? Fine. But not a mistake. I love that we got to see this film happen the way it is. I’m still confident it will be benefitial in the long run. You are sending filmmakers the wrong message. You should instead educate and encourage the mainstream to give such movies a chance.
From what I understand, the stories usually have to be simpler (accommodating for cultural differences) to be easily translated as most of them are subbed, not dubbed - so that people can still watch what is going on while reading. In addition, the Asian market doesn't have the sort of money Hollywood does to make the amount of spectacle type movies (true of most international markets) hence, spectacle performing so well overseas...
Too slow and long....or as I like to say, "Immersive world building." I'm thankful studios occasionally take chances on movies like this. Otherwise, we'd never get anything as wonderful as 2049.
If only Blade Runner had a female lead filled with platitudes, 90 minutes long, a funny black guy and a bunch of robots transforming to trucks and exotic cars, they could have killed it in the box office! But NOOOooooo! They Just had to make a good thought provoking artistic movie, idiots.
Mezmerized4Life Jay Great example of that is It: no really well known actors in it (I only knew Finn Wolfhard) and even really, people behind the scenes aren't hugely well known, so it is hugely dependant on the strength of the Stephen King name!
I love how: "art in film is not dead" is said in the same video where you utter the words: "those were important dollars" in humble deference to how commercial your experience with the original film should be. Irony may not be dead, but film art sure is.
To be honest the Las Vegas tragedy(and other terror attacks) have people angry and afraid to go out. This added to the lack of movie going to drop. This trend may continue to decline as Netflix, Amazon and HBO deliver directly to our homes making the experience more accommodating.
I think you are over analyzing. Very few people think bad things can happen to them. So a mass shooting or other terror attack will not stop folks from going out.
It was weird hearing about how people reacted to the original and how people walked out of theaters for 2049. I watched the final cut for my first blade runner viewing about a week ago and when it ended, I was all for the sequel. I was so invested in 2049 that by the end, I was surprised 2.75 hours had passed. I find it sad that nobody saw 2049.
You are positively giddy 'bout 2049 underperforming, or it just seems this way? Why? This was, of course, predictable if the movie turned out as good as it did: - Good movies / smart movies target audience that is "above average", which is by default a minority - the smarter the movie, the smaller the minority is! In the real world, and unlike the lake woebegone - everyone being above average in terms of smarts is a mathematical impossibility... There are the average ones, then there is the above average elite, and the below average obtuse. To get as much audience as possible, any movie got to include the average ones. If it is too smart for them - then it is indeed in trouble. What ultimately saves smart movies is time - all of the "above average" elites from different years accrue to make enough of a mass to make financial sense. The movie will sell DVD's and downloads for years to come - which will ultimately help its finances... Same as with the original one. So, it will get its 400mil - just it may take a year or two to get there.
wtf Blade Runner was a masterpiece, 2049 was crap, don't blame the first for the latter... regarding "Kathleen Kennedy coming out on top"... good to see that didn't last and her rep is so bad she had to sneak on stage at the last SW convention to hid from getting booed by fans
As much as I want to contradict her, she's right. That is and has always being the rule. BR 2049 is a masterpiece in my opinion but it was to slow paced. And if you consider you need a studio to develop and support your movie, it is logical there has to be a revenue.
i thought blade runner 2049 is better than the original but i think its a wake up call to hollywood studios the modern day audiences dont want to see sequels 30 years ago, blade runner, aliens, hollywood want to do a coming to america sequel will it work......i dont know
not sequels yes, but reimaginations of those properties is what i AM interested in. but they think connecting everything is gonna make us jizz our pants. yes it works for marvel, because marvel invented our modern day urge to see everything being connected, but they created their own start in 2008 and are currently laying grounds for a finale in 2019... they have thought this out thorougly!
Instead we're going to be getting MCU, DCEU, and fucking Star Wars films for the next 30 years. Dear God, it's a bleak time for films that have any artistic merit at all. And by "artistic" I don't mean "creative", b/c certainly there is creativity in many of the blockbusters, but not a single one of those films challenges the audience, or asks important questions, or fundamentally changes the course of film making. I'm certain that 30 years from now when the next generation of directors are hitting their stride they'll cite 2049 as hugely influential in how they approach directing.
In Hong Kong , the only thing I heard after blade runner 2049 was talking about how boring or slow it is, but I think it is still a great movie, which makes it a good movie that destroy the studio
Grace, as a cinephile and as a religious watcher of your channel, I must say that first, I couldn't agree more with what you've presented here. Secondly, I finished the original blade runner at 7 am this Tuesday morning (discount day at the movie theaters) and I watched 2049 at noon. I appreciated the genre equally in the first one as much as the second one. With that said, as I slightly powered through the first one, I was able without a doubt to truly enjoy it for what it was; it had been a whole new script/concept back then !! I did expect a lot more from 2049; action as well as a more "WOAH!" Scene aside from the fantastic threesome. At the same token, somehow I accepted the decision to sort of follow the same sort of storyline across both films.
Film art is not dead as long as i keep buying tickets
Master Knight Of Yeshua Lol, how many times have you watched it?
Blade Runner was a cult classic, and people shouldn't expect follow ups to those movies to be box office successes.
Exactly.
Exactly, there is a 35 year gap in between the two films. Its to be expected it won't perform that well at the box office.
Then it shouldn’t have been made, people need to stop saying film is dead because people didn’t want to see a sequel to a movie that most people didn’t want to see the first one.
Agreed. People's expectations were way high and they didn't even look at the signs.
Regardless I thought the movie was a masterpiece so I couldnt care less how much mainstream audiences dig it lol.All that matters is if I enjoy it.
Streets of Vancouver Fully engaged or fully asleep? Lol
My thoughts exactly, total snooze fest.
Phantom Thread or Radegund, maybe Roma will be the best art film of the year with a fraction of BR 2049's budget
Im thankful the movie was made its a shame not alot of people came
If you fell asleep during 2049 you simply don't enjoy cinema.
Denis Villeneuve doesn't need to be told how to pace his movies... The audience needs to be told what good cinema actually is.
Preach!
Blade Runner was soooo good though!!!
I was entertained start to finish, I legitimately don't understand why so many are bored by it...
Same. But looking at the trending list in UA-cam, who is considered an "idol" in today's society... I am not really surprised.
2049 is great. New generations just aren't patient enough to have a great slow paced art house film no matter the budget it gets.
It's a case where you can't please everyone. If it was faster paced, younger audiences may have been happy, but older audiences may have been pissed.
every time a movie bombs, the overexplaining about the flopping is its own story at this point
You have to understand that most people haven't seen the first film so they probably got lost watching it.
Did Grace just drop a 16 minute "I told you so" video? Savage move, Grace.
I guess Rotten Tomatoes score doesn't save a movie after all
Or the general audience has terrible taste.
It doesn't kill one either ;-)
Akhil Djokovic A good score doesn't save it as much as a bad score ruins it.
I think you're right. I'm still convinced that bad scores burn the box office
No duh! How many Oscar nominated movies make barely any money, if that didn't give away over last decade
Movie is too deep for your average person to go see.
+The_White_Void Not too deep, but too long. The original Blade Runner was under two hours.
It isn't that deep lmao. It's a complex idea, but not a deep one. Slavery with robots. Not hard to understand, but not everyone is interested.
@@psalm_11 its crearly too deep for u, since u didnt understand.
its not art that is dead in Hollywood, its appreciation of art and artistic intellect which is slowly but surely dying in society.
I think it's a bad comparison between Blade Runner and Star Wars. If people were given a blockbuster friendly movie, it would be forgotten by people who care about the original.

Ricardo Rios Its definitely different, and giving it the blockbuster treatment betrays the tone of Blade Runner 1982. And I bet if they commercialized the sequel, people might actually reject it as misrepresenting the original.
So either way, this movie would have low box office results
You are right, but there was no excuse for there not being more straightforward conflict.
your right because star wars is shit and blade runner is godlike
Blade Runner 2049 made good numbers for a 3 hour sci-fi movie, but I still don't understand how they gave them 150+ million dollars. It's baffling to be honest, it had box office fail written all over it
Matt Red probably to show moviegoers that not all sequels of good movies aren't just Hollywood cashgrabbing trashfests.
+Matt Red It's baffling, but not as baffling as the same idiots, Alcon Entertainment, spending $100 million to do a remake of Point Break.
The first Bladerunner was a flop , what made them think this one would do better?
+Alan Brown I think that they confused influence with box office returns.
I think the two biggest problems with Blade Runner are that it doesn't have a built in audience and that the trailers didn't give ANYTHING away. You gotta hook em with *something* , but those trailers pretty much only catered to people who were *already* excited for the movie

I personally feel Blade Runner should have been pushed in Oscar season it could have made crazy money if it had Oscar buzz.
Vinnie J Not much of a push.
We kinda are in Oscar season though
I doubt it. Oscar buzz doesn't always translate to increased box office profits. Most of the Oscar nominees aren't mainstream movies.
Yeah, but Mad Max Fury Road got a ton of noms and wins. Though the Oscar buzz came after the movie came out.
Hopefully the DP gets a nomination and wins. Absolutely beautiful.
Did she really say many people didn't enjoy La La Land, one of the most critically acclaimed movies of last year and a literal Oscar winner.... What is she even talking about..
Many people didn't enjoy the latest Star Wars either, what's your point? And a lot of mediocre films have gotten Oscars.
Erik Nilsson ehh. I would say it's mostly just diehard fans of the original trilogy that disliked TFA. the general public and critics alike loved it even with its flaws.
She hates it and is very biased.
A lot of people loved it but the film was a bit of a downer narratively.
valerie that film managed to make two of my favourite actors extremely unlikeable and that saddened me. Congrats Damien Chazelle (slow clap)
You can't say Ridley is destroying his property with Blade Runner 2049. This movie will be appreciated by the same kind of people that liked the first one.
Blade Runner was never a movie that intended to be liked by everyone, and changing that would be the true offense to Ridley's legacy.
Blade Runner boring ? People are dumb !
GNslashR82 it's called different opinions
It was pretty, beautiful even. Just aimed at a pretty narrow audience. Also, not great for everyone not a white guy.
splits second Marvel has nothing do with this...

You know who is dumb? Grace is.

Final Cut > Directors Cut > Theatrical Cut
It's opposite. Final cut is way too violent. Theatrical cut is the most engaging.
This is probably a stupid question, but if I want to rent Blade Runner, will I get the theatrical or final cut?? :/
Thanks! I really need to watch the original some time. lol
Wow, I just don't get people though I admit I was part of that 86% who watched Blade Runner 2049 this weekend (male over 35). I can't stop thinking about the movie. It was spellbinding for me.

People didn’t walk out of ur theater during “Mother!”? I call bs Grace !!
My only question when we first learned a good deal about this movie was, "Why Ryan Gosling?". Smdh
+LazloSon Who would you have cast instead though?
Lucky me that I am not a mainstream moviegoer and I am sooo excited to see Blade Runner 2049 tomorrow!!! :P

I am watching it tonight... in 10h 15min ! :)
Thomas Mann schedule a second viewing. 👍
Well.. in a world were people just have enough brain capacity to enjoy viral meme compilations and Logan Paul can be on Jimmy Kimmel.. I'm not surprised at all that they walked out. Denis makes art.. but some people prefer trash.
Salmonero I went to see it yesterday and i was surprised to see only about 15 people im the theather and 1 hr before it ended 3 people walked out .
Angel last name Yeah it's not for everyone.. Almost 3 hours can be too long for some.. I'd watch it even if it was 5 hours :) Did you enjoy it?
Salmonero yeah it was pretty good
2049 will be influencing sci-fi films and directors for generations to come regardless of it's box office receipts, so as a work of ART, job done.
I walked out of Blade Runner 2049, 2 hours in. I did not regret my decision 😂
David Janssen-Cahill not enough action for ur millenial dumbass generation of urs huh
It's not a question of action, It's a question of good characters and good story which this movie doesn't have opposed to the original one.
I walked out after the end credit scenes.
There wasnt any.
It's not boring. It requires patience, which people don't have anymore. 2049 is a masterpiece.
How come a movie less good than the original masterpiece could be one ?
Sedah Senrot lol a lot of people are actually in the other camp. The movie is a masterpiece.
how does " lot of people are actually in the other camp" make any change ? People can be wrong. I CAN'T !
Sedah Senrot Exactly, " How come a movie less good than the original masterpiece could be one."
It's all opinion.
It only made 50 mil outside the US this weekend, it's looking unlikely
That was based on very few markets. No UK, Germany, France, Spain, Japan or China in those figures. goto Box office mojo and you can see the actual breakdown.
+Kadayi actually it included all those Europe markets u listed
I love Blade Runner 2049, but I think this analysis is spot-on, especially in regards to the lack of diversity in the film. I hope Denis Villeneuve continues to make these fantastic sci-fi movies though, Arrival is still one of my favorite movies.

Elba would not change the ethnicity of bond. Craig and Elba share the same ethnicity. Elba would change the RACE of the character. People need to learn about the difference between Ethnicity and Race.
I want the Denis Villenueve Dune NOW!
serban capraru YES!!!!
DUNE, Escape from New York, and Mad Max back when it was really gritty.
We’re getting it in 6 days!!!
Though visually stunning you could have cut at least 30 minutes of the movie and still leave every scene in the final cut that's how long some of the shots were. It's a movie made for enthusiasts of the medium not the casual Super-Hero-Cinema-Goers...
Green Lantern would save Idris in the box office. The guy obviously is one of the most talented actors in the business.
I didn't walk out of the theater but I did fall to sleep twice.
Gabriel Mendoza idiot
You know what really grinds my gears-that Blade Runner 2049(a scifi masterpiece) will perform poorly at the box office, while that overrated sci-fi crap called Star Wars:The Last Jedi will come out December and make close to 2 billion worldwide 😒
I would argue that Star Wars is fantasy, but I completely agree. I really loved the new blade runner
Science fantasy.......and you can't call it crap until you've seen it. I have faith in Rian Johnson, who did the excellent sci-fi noir, Looper
The reason why Blade Runner 2049 is tanking is because it is a slow pondering piece of shit that focuses on existential thoughts and ideas about what defines us as humans and Star Wars: The Last Jedi will make a shitload of money is because it is a fast packed sci-fi action popcorn movie that people will want to see for there is not much thinking involved.
alan bray "for there is not much thinking involved" And people wonder why this generation is filled with boneheads.
So you watched Victoria and Abdul, what did you think about it?
I'm convinced no one truly loves Blade Runner, they simply admire it deeply & constantly confuse the two.
Grace couldn't wait to tell us all "I told you so" .
I did my part, I took my daughter to the double feature RPX opening for $50+. I loved it! Great experience!
I hit all four quadrants on my own! 😂
The first 2/3 of the movie kept me captivated, but by the end I was literally falling asleep.
I respect the filmmakers for dying in their feet.
Money will come and go but art is immortal.
ok so Wikipedia gives the movie's budget as 150 million to *185 million*, damn
they gave that much money to a sequel for a film that hardly anyone watched when it came out... I feel bad for them to a degree but the fact no one told them to revise what they were doing reminds of the Star Wars Prequels, except that those did make money
It’s probably upwards of 250 million with marketing and back ends deals. That budget is ridiculous for that movie.
joseph robinson It was used very well though and I really enjoyed it! I know it's a cult classic but boy was it worth it!
At least we got 2049 released and is now forever available to us. Can’t be taken away.
It may have flopped. But I wouldn't change a thing. The movie is one of the best I have seen in years. Audiences are the problem. Not Blade Runner 2049
When I went to see Blade Runner opening night, the theater that I was in was less than half full.
No "FAN BASE" ok girl
Carlun o yeah no fan base
It doesn’t have a fan base obviously or else it wouldn’t flop this hard.
Carlun o Right?! I saw it and loved it!!!
joseph robinson it does have a fan base it's just not the size of Star Wars or marvel she should have specified she meant it didn't have a large enough fan base
solid snake 323 that's what she said
I don't see how people weren't entertained by Blade Runner 2049. I watched it on 3 hours of sleep in 48 hrs and didn't bat an eye. Great film but has it flaws please go check it out guys I need more films with this ambition.
i also agree this was not a female friendly movie.
people dont want to think when they go to watch a movie, they see movies simply as entertainment and thats it, just something you sit back to and enjoy some explosions and mindless action, this is whats wrong with the majority of movie goers
Overseas it made more money! Also, Yes I blame the mainstream people and people who just say they will wait for it on DVD!
Blade Runner 2049 deserves way better numbers... WAY better!
Gal Gadot in a miniskirt....
People walked out of my viewing. My SECOND viewing in one weekend :)
I was ready to get on the defense about art film, but you made very good points and made it clear that it is not dead. I love your videos!!
My predictions for the weekend:
1. Happy Death Day ($20 million)
2. The Foreigner ($15 million)
3. Blade Runner 2049 ($14 million)
4. IT ($4 million)
5. Marshall ($3 million)
Early Thor: Ragnarok Twitter reactions are overwhelmingly positive!
TastyDash so has Justice League...
so glad that I bought ticket for Thor and wont see Justice League!shame that I am actually a bigger dc fanboy than marvel!zack killed it for me!
It's just another recycled Marvel movie, move on.
Roman Natale Justice League hasn't had any social media reactions yet. There was no press screening for the film yet, so you're wrong. Don't know why you had to make this about DC
bernhardtsen74 to bad I'll see it for you
Your insight on the subject of money and art is the best out there.
+Saud Al-Mutawa "But not a mistake."
Blade Runner 2049's budget vs. box office suggest otherwise.
Production Budget: $150 million, Worldwide Gross: $195,847,770
Asia won't save blade runner, their audiences want spectacle dumb action, not film noir mystery.
rurutu M it's so true wonder why
From what I understand, the stories usually have to be simpler (accommodating for cultural differences) to be easily translated as most of them are subbed, not dubbed - so that people can still watch what is going on while reading. In addition, the Asian market doesn't have the sort of money Hollywood does to make the amount of spectacle type movies (true of most international markets) hence, spectacle performing so well overseas...
Its sad that Blade Runner didnt do as well as we hoped, but internationally lets hope the movie makes its money back
Wonder Woman isn’t going to get near any Oscar
Maybe costumes. But that's all..
True that.
Well I am watching Bladerunner 2049 again this thursday. Loved the original, and loved the sequel. Guess I'm a weird one!
I completely agree Grace, it is the property/franchise that is the draw and not so much the actors anymore. Great video as always 😊
Mezmerized4Life Jay Great example of that is It: no really well known actors in it (I only knew Finn Wolfhard) and even really, people behind the scenes aren't hugely well known, so it is hugely dependant on the strength of the Stephen King name!
Mark Carver IT went on to be a smash hit. I wish I could see the movie but I don't have a lot of money.
What's more bland actors like Ryan Gosling leading such a movie? Isn't there more qualified ones around?
off-kilter LOL yeah 😂
Blade Runner should have been a Netflix series, with lots of character development.
Grace pls stop calling WW an awards contender
I doubt Grace is talking about best movie contender. Have a diaper ready just in case.
I just hope Villeneuve delivers Dune with the same quality as Blade Runner 2049, Box Office be damned
hopefully blade runner can become the next Titanic
I love how: "art in film is not dead" is said in the same video where you utter the words: "those were important dollars" in humble deference to how commercial your experience with the original film should be. Irony may not be dead, but film art sure is.
This is sad this film was a masterpiece
I wouldn't say MLP never recovered from Lauren Faust's exit. I'd argue that it got better.
To be honest the Las Vegas tragedy(and other terror attacks) have people angry and afraid to go out. This added to the lack of movie going to drop. This trend may continue to decline as Netflix, Amazon and HBO deliver directly to our homes making the experience more accommodating.
Themadbomber187 IT made a ton money last month. This is a moot point.
I think you are over analyzing. Very few people think bad things can happen to them. So a mass shooting or other terror attack will not stop folks from going out.
kbros9698 IT came out weeks before the Vegas shooting. By that time, IT was already a hit
Themadbomber187 no
The reason for MLP is more because people watched it online rather than in theaters
Themadbomber187 That wasn't a terror attack. That was a licensed gun owner.
Blade runner is great, but avg people just want explosions and superheros.
You can't blame people if they spend there money on what they want..
As much as I want to contradict her, she's right. That is and has always being the rule. BR 2049 is a masterpiece in my opinion but it was to slow paced. And if you consider you need a studio to develop and support your movie, it is logical there has to be a revenue.
So sad about blade runner
Marvel should reboot the Blade franchise, with Idris Elba as Blade.
i thought blade runner 2049 is better than the original
but i think its a wake up call to hollywood studios
the modern day audiences dont want to see sequels 30 years ago, blade runner, aliens, hollywood want to do a coming to america sequel will it work......i dont know
not sequels yes, but reimaginations of those properties is what i AM interested in. but they think connecting everything is gonna make us jizz our pants. yes it works for marvel, because marvel invented our modern day urge to see everything being connected, but they created their own start in 2008 and are currently laying grounds for a finale in 2019... they have thought this out thorougly!
I'm certain that 30 years from now when the next generation of directors are hitting their stride they'll cite 2049 as hugely influential in how they approach directing.
simplyrecommended good point
In Hong Kong , the only thing I heard after blade runner 2049 was talking about how boring or slow it is, but I think it is still a great movie, which makes it a good movie that destroy the studio
Idris Elba is a good actor and I belive he would be a good James Bond
your scepticism was right Grace , u were the first to predict Blade runner wouldn't be upto expectations
No Gerald's Game review????
Plz React to 'Padmavati' trailer and u will not regret for it.
I'm happy for IT making a ton of money it's not every day you see a modern horror movie being successful right now * cries tears of joy * ❤️.
