  • Toy hot air (stirling cycle) fans were playful imitations of larger table and room fans from the same era. Toy versions were made by several German toy companies including Bing, Marklin, and Carette. Larger working fans were made by Jost (German), Lake Breeze (US), and Kyko (UK) among others.

What is the purpose of all the complicated connection between the piston rod and the shaft of the fan?

That's crucial to its operation This is a beta type Stirling engine which means the power piston and displacer piston are in the same cylinder with the power piston moving above the displacer. Air is heated in a closed cylinder and this expanding air pushes the power piston outward. As this is happening the loose-fitting displacer moves down to the bottom of the cylinder and pushes (displaces) the heated air past itself to the top of the cylinder where it cools. The power piston then responds to the cooled internal air and is pushed back in by atmospheric pressure. For all this to happen the displacer must move 90 degrees in advance of the power piston on the crankshaft so the power piston can respond to its action. That complicated looking linkage makes this possible--crank for the displacer is 90 degrees ahead of the crank for the power piston. The wishbone yoke is the connecting rod to the power piston which gives room for the displacer rod to pass through the center of the power piston. If this is not clear just google "Stirling cycle".
