Who are the people who come here to check the camera after watching the 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day 3D 1991 ? IIt was used in making this blockbustor movie...
In this film you can see a 122 m cassette (400 feet) with 4:26 minutes running time. There are also 304 m (1000 feet) cassettes available with 11:26 minutes running time for the Arriflex 35 BL cine camera.
Danke für diese kürze Einsicht. Hat 'Der Himmel über Berlin' oder 'Wings of Desire' angeguckt und gesehen das Wim Wenders mit diesem typ Kamera gedreht hatte. Sehr schöne Bilder...
Beautiful, thanks! This is not that important, but if your closeup angle at 1:24 was from your POV side, it wouldn't be confusing, because of the rotation direction. The only way to find out is by comparing where the emulsion side is, so we can make sense of where it's rotating towards. If you follow camera angle techniques for continuity, then that issue is resolved. I know we also need to see from the other side, but that angle may need a connecting angle between both shots.
@@Episodio-UM The film loading should be done in complete darkness. Any light will ruin the film. Of course for demonstration purposes they use an already ruined roll so there's no loss.
@@valurautakattila Loading the magazine was done with a changing bag. First you remove the sticky tape from around the film can then put the film in the bag. You zip up the bag, insert your two hands in the armholes. And then only by feeling with your hands you load the film into the magazine which you had beforehand placed in the bag. I used the BL 2.
I was wondering if you knew how to create the visual style of the 1992 film 'Bad Lieutenant' it has a very rich colour (well for me) and would really love to know where one get this visual style. Many thanks, Dom
I suppose that this entire process has to be done by touch alone in a pitch black darkroom or Paterson changing bag to prevent exposing and ruining the entire film reel? What is the diameter in centimetres of a film magazine that can fit a 1000 foot 35 mm film reel?
Yes Michael, you are right. The unexposed site should be loaded in total darkness. The loop and the take up roll can be treated in a lighted environment. The removal, however, happens again in the darkness. The diameter of a 400 foot reel is exactly 19 cm the 1000 foot is almost 30 cm, I can't say more precisely.
The Arriflex 35BL was built between 1972 and 1975, it has a 180° rotating mirror shutter that means 1/48 sec shutter speed at 24fps. The highest frame rate is 100 fps (1/200 sec) The Camera has Arri steel bayonet lens mount and external blimps for certain lenses, like the Zeiss Super Speed Primes.
This is a 122 meter (400 ft) magazine you can see here for ca. 4,5 minutes running time. There are also 300 meter (1000 ft) magazines available for the Arriflex 35 BL with 11 min. running time.
thanks for your reply. so realistically, a feature film would take maybe 11 of those 1000fts, and splice them end on end? (ignoring any cuts to the material within)
The fundamental problem of the cine camera was the noise of the mechanic were soon solved with new camera casings, known as "blimps". The Arriflex BL is the first self blimped camera, designed with its own low noise body. BL stands for the abbreviation of Blimp.
I shouldn't, you said it. The Arriflex 35 BL is a professional film camera, it exposes light-sensitive material. When someone picks up such a device, they have to be familiar with a complicated manufacturing process. In this case it goes without saying that the material must be handled in complete darkness.
This was Roger Deakins' camera of choice for many years.
This is the camera behind most of your favourite 80s ans early 90s films
Yup
Thanks for posting this. I'm taking a course on the ARRI 35mm and this was really helpful.
I would choose this over Red camera and any modern camera.
Nice. I came here because of Sven Nykvist and John Alcott, among others. :-)
Don't forget Michael Chapman (Taxi Driver)

谢谢.终于了解了这个问题.三十多年了在心中
James Cameron also use this camera in the Terminator, The Abyss, T2 and True Lies.
I actually like this type of film magazine over the Arricam ones. You just have to worry about one side at a time and seems more compact.

Welche Stromversorgung braucht die BL denn? 24 V? 12 V?
Drehstrom dreiphasig, abgesichert auf 32A
How is the sound level on this camera? Does it run silent/near silent when everything is closed up? Is it like the Arri SR2?
Do some videos about panavision cameras to
this era is where you bring the camera and people will call you 'cinematographer".

Maybe this is a dumb question coming from a film stills point of view but how is the film loaded without it being fully exposed when opening?
It was just a demonstration by an expired film roll. The loading should be taken in total darkness.
wow that rules - i want a BL now !
Great demo!
Hideaki anno filmed the live action portions of the end of evangelion with this camera
Da wird so manche Alexa eifersüchtig.
thanks for making this video!

0:27 rip all the film (i know this is probably a dummy but still)

I look with pleasure
They shot Conan the Barbarian with this camera.
hoping that film was already exposed or at least "dead film" because it would be such a waste especially loading it in the light.
Yes this roll was expired, unsuitable for cinematographic work.
How many fps, shutter speed and lens options does it have? Also what year was it made?

I love this camera however is 4perf and it consumes too much film about 4 min per 400’ ft. I prefer a 2perf lest film more time less money
Sir Explain Old Cinematography???
Yes I do ;-)
Amazing piece of engineering, whats the maximum length of tape a spool can have on this camera ?
Craig Mitchell i think they might have 1000 footer mags somehwhere might be one of the first to introduce that soze i think
400 feet, 122 meter
0:27 Did anyone else wince here?
does this have tone done in the dark?
is this the bl 1
Yes it is.
the only bad of film is the high price
There still more affordable film formats like 16mm and 8mm film.

You should tell your audience not to open a can of film if not in a dark room or dark back.

alte Technik im film
you're exposing all the footage its gonna be worthless
This was already unusable for cinematographic purposes before it was shot.
bit of a wast of film, but apart from that cool vid...
Nice camera & clip.
