  • The 1930s Canterbury cottage underwent a transformation by Inbetween Architecture, addressing a dysfunctional kitchen and disconnection from the backyard. Overcoming heritage restrictions, a split-level addition was designed, creating multifunctional spaces and a new way to engage with the garden.
    Timber and bricks were used in the reimagined material palette, bringing contemporary versatility to the historical elements. A bluestone slab on site was reused in the garden as a bench seat.
    The design's success lies in its balance of heritage and innovation, impacting both functionality and inspiring the owners, one of which is an artist.

    I would have liked to see more of the interior of the home and a floor plan would have been great. Interesting concept with the lowered kitchens.

    Such a pretty house, very sunny, cozy, breathing with the connection to the nature. I understand the idea of the kitchen being lowered to get a mezzanine...but it is a very high step to take down/up. But all together it is a beautiful concept!

      There are proper steps towards the front of the home. But I was speaking with the owners on the day of the shoot and they told me they just do the big step more often than not. Can be a handy height for step-ups and other exercises!

    I love this space. The different levels remind me of Japanese interiors, which I love.

    Love the outside. Not sure about the interior though...for me not a really practical floor plan and a bit boring regarding colours/ materials (but of course everyone is different in this). Definitely perfect handcraft and all in all a lovely video. And thanks a lot for sharing the floor plan and the additional photos! Greetings from the other side of the world, Hamburg, Germany. ,-).

      Hello Hamburg! It is a very subdue interior, which I personally lean more to (although I try to share a range of interior styles on the channel), but if it's not for you, that is perfectly okay and welcome you to voice that.
      Hope you're enjoying the videos, and the website with more photos and floor plans.

      Family home, two parents and a teenage son. However, visiting family got stuck for a few months due to COVID, so the house was able to handle 7-8 people living there.

    I was wondering that this one and the last uploaded videos were mostly focused on the interior and the renovation of it, and it got me thinking how much people actually care about the exterior of there houses if they are not living it like the interior. I have commented that the last examples of the interiors were really good designed and well thought out and it seemed that the people loved being there so thats why it brought my question if the exterior does it even matter? is that a thing we should be conserned? Does this involve only architects or peoples aesthetic as well?

    • @SimpleDwelling
      @SimpleDwelling  3 роки тому +3

      That is an interesting thought, I will say that the importance of the "exterior" in terms of visual appeal isn't as high as getting the interior spaces right. However, that's not to say we should forget or neglect the exterior. In a lot of well designed homes, the exterior appearance is a direct result of the interior, such as this home. The shape from the rear garden responds to the mezzanine, which responded to the sloping site but also the heritage control. For other homes, that exterior might be working to protect the interior from the sun, or bring in light, or connect to the garden.

    I don’t really understand the two kitchens. There were not enough shots of each to understand the concept of the design.

    • @SimpleDwelling
      @SimpleDwelling  3 роки тому +1

      Two kitchens are getting more common, with one being the working kitchen at the back, and a more “prep”/less intensive kitchen that faces the living areas. The owners told us while she is cooking in the back kitchen, he is prepping in the front kitchen, and they use the pass through to send ingredients between each other.

    • @laurenbradynutrition
      @laurenbradynutrition 3 роки тому +1

      @@SimpleDwelling In the US, a prep kitchen is typically high intensity, speaking from years of experience in the restaurant industry. The prep kitchen is where veggies and proteins will be cleaned, broken down, and properly stored. A lot of mess happens in the process. The terminology doesn't seem to translate from commercial to private home settings. I've seen two kitchens in celebrity home tours, but in this home it seems more of a creative use of the space rather than for utility of hosting parties/guests so I would have appreciated more shots of each kitchen to understand the design challenges that were overcome. I enjoy your work and I'm just sharing constructive feedback so you understand the viewers learning curve and experience.

      Great answer, but as Asian, - not in all seriousness :)) - I would say it's also a common "asian thing". There are 'dirty/wet' and 'clean/dry' kitchen. Dry kitchen is really inside the house, and - jokingly said - more to impress our guests. The real tasty food comes from the wet kitchen.

    • @naysunhuang
      @naysunhuang 3 роки тому

      I would also go out on a limb and say the owner is asian. It's common for asian households to have 2 kitchens. The second kitchen in this video is equipped with a wok burner and what is referred to as an outside/wet kitchen. :)

    So many of these "historic" homes in Australia really aren't historic or well designed. They were affordable builder-homes when they were built and had few 'good bones'. Don't know why they preserve their street facades when they don't deserve it.
