For the last 4yrs I have been loosing hives due to low population, but this last fall I treated them with oxalic acid, they seem extremely happy a couple weeks afterwards, the populations seem good, I'm hoping this is the first winter in a while where I don't lose a hive.
Just read a thorough completed study today that says you need about 50,000 bees to overwinter in cold climates. But I have overwintered nucs too, and certainly single deeps.
On the oil I think it just disappears mine are empty as well and I have not moved mine but also I did not put a hole lot in them either. the beetle blasters work great
Why would it be better to place a Honey Bee Kind on the bottom box when you consolidate them instead of replacing empty or partially empty frames with full honey frames from the top box.
This was great😀
Wow! First time viewer. Great info! I can tell you know your beesness!

Please keep us updated on this hive and the excessive protein experiment. Love the videos keep them coming! You're a great asset to us!
Did the oil pour out when you set the top super on its side?
That must have been what happened.
I’ve done that more than once. Oops 😊
I like that you did something like this. Don’t get to see stuff like this. More experiments are welcomed.
❤
Thank you for updating us with valuable informations
Thank you and learning a lot!
I meant Thank you lol. I have a hive in Northern VT so hope it makes it. I do have it wrapped but winters can be brutal here to!
Well Sir..I pulled my old, ripped blue jean from the trash and cut them to pieces while watching the rest of this video. Good idea!
Plenty of folks overwintering nucleus colonies farther north than you. Sure they bunch them up but its doable for sure

Should you wrap the hive , Would that help?
Is there any chance the top super would contain honey produce from feeding them
If you fed them a liquid sugar maybe. Just let them use it in the winter and spring and refill it with nectar.
U r worried about 40s, mine will fly there. Only 16 today, supposed to be 1 tonight and has been below zero already

Not a bad idea. But Mostly the winter cluster moves upward not always so much side to side.
Sorry I spoke before I finished the video.
