DIY Custom Cast Alumilite Screwdriver Handle With Magnetic Interchangeable Bits

  • Simple, Quick & Easy!! For this project, I used silicone rubber to mold a screwdriver handle so I can resin cast my own custom handles using Alumilite. Because it uses a magnetic bit tip holder, you can swap out bits for any type of fastener. Plus the magnetic bit holder makes it easy to use!

      Thanks! This one pretty simple, but blown away by the results. I need to do some more silicone mold casting like that, it's really a lot of fun!

    Nice work, but can you not just cast the driver directly into the handle when you pour the resin into the mould?

    You should try your hand at making a drop spindle. They are used to turn fiber into yarn. Seeing your blanks I think they would make an awesome looking spindle.

      I'll have to check them out and see if I can make one. I always love trying out new projects out, especially when I can make it with custom blanks! Thanks for the idea :-)

    I could see this technique being used by people that want or need to re-handle their existing screwdriver shanks. I'd think that in that case, you'll want to wax the shank at the 'wrench' section, and actually insert it into the resin (Alumilite) before it hardens. Cutting the sprue resin off would be trickier, of course. (I guess at that point you'd just cut the mold down to be flush with the end of the handle, underfill a bit, and insert the shank, so you didn't have to trim anything)

      Thanks David! Yeah, I am hoping to do some more playing around with it. Have some fun project Ideas that I want to use it for, so I've been trying to get some practice. It's pretty easy to spot things that would be fun to make a mold of. Next step is to test my 2-part mold making skills out! Need to come up with a good project for that!

      Yeah, learned that trick from Punished Props! I have to give them a lot of credit, their mold making videos are really what gave me the confidence to really dive in and try mold making again. I tried a couple times before, but really had no clue what I was doing. Still barely know what I'm doing, but I think I have the basics down now!! It's super fun too!

    Wow that's cool .
    Is it possible to carve a channel to store extra bits in the handle ?
    To keep the extra bits in there maybe place a magnet in the channel or a cap of some sort.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      That's a great idea! Yeah it shouldn't be too hard to do, the sky's the limit with these things, you could customize it any way you like. You could either build those types of features into the master or do some extra work to it after you cast the piece

    Was the hole you drilled exactly the same size at the screwdriver bit? Or did you make the hole slightly bigger? I am making screwdriver where the end that goes into the handle is completely smooth. If I drill the hole the exact same size as the bit, will it go in nicely or will the hole be too tight to put it in by hand?

      Heck yeah, I'm pretty stoked about it. Go grab some silicone and make a mold. It's a pretty easy process, and once you have the mold you can make as many as you want in any color!!

  • @MichaelLawing

    Cool process. The alumilite is way nicer than the mass produced handles.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      Yeah, it sure does look better than that standard handle, and it's just as durable too! The best part is once you've made the mold, you can make just about any color you want with it! Score!!

    Great project! Would love to learn just how you adapted the pressure pot for degassing.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому +1

      I didn't even think to mention that. I just bought a lid from Best Value vacs for it (www.bestvaluevacs.com/universallids.html). I still think the TurnTex chambers are the way to go for wood stabilizing because you can see what's happening in the chamber, but it's pretty tough to fit a cup of silicone in my 4" TurnTex chamber. Having the wider pot is much better for things like this. I think it cost about $100 and it came with everything you need. It just sets on the pot and works great.

    • @timbroderickjr
      @timbroderickjr 8 років тому

      +Zac Higgins Just looked at the BVV site...very interesting...a lid & a vacuum pump and I'd be ready to build molds! Is it theoretically possible to stabilize in the pot with that rig?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      Yeah, it's totally possible. I just generally recommend people use a clear sided chamber for wood stabilizing so you can really see what's happening in there, but aside from the visibility using this setup is the same.

    you said they made a resin mix that doesnt need to de gass? i want to make handles for allen wrenches to turn them into T handles but wondering if it's too expensive

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому +1

      Resins that have a very long working time typically don't require pressure since they have enough open time for the air bubbles to free themselves from the resin on their own. Amazing Clear Cast from Alumilite has a long open time, most epoxies do, and Polyester Resin too

      Thanks Glen! The red was a mixture of dye and Pearl Ex powder, and the silver was a metallic powder from Alumilite

    Neat project. If you want a handle that is a little more customized, why not turn the original before making the mold . . . and presto ! a unique handle for your new tool.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      I thought about it, but my focus was getting more experience with silicone mold making and didn't want to take the time to mess with turning a handle. You could definitely turn your own though if you need more customization

    hello, i know that this has nothing to do with this video, but i was wondering if you would make a video about casting spruce pine cones in resin? i have tried and tried and they keep warping and cracking. i dont know if im using the wrong resin or what, im using amazing clear cast from alumilite. please help. oh, im using the casting for knife scales, dont know if that makes a difference. thank you.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      Hey Joseph, sorry to hear you're having problems with your castings. I can add a pine cone casting video to the list, but it would be a while before I could get to it. Lots of videos in the cue already. I'm thinking your problems are due to the resin you are using. I would switch to Alumilite Clear rather than the Amazing Clear Cast stuff, most people have problems with it. Also, make sure you buy your resin direct from the manufacturer, you never know how long it has sat on the shelf at the hobby stores or from other online stores. Here's a link to the Clear resin on Alumilite's website: www.alumilite.com/store/p/933-Alumilite-Clear.aspx
      The other big thing is you need to make sure the pine cones are fully dried out before casting them. I bake them overnight in an oven at 225 degrees to make sure there is no moisture in it. I think if you do those two things, you'll get much better results. You can also stabilize the pine cones, but it's not necessary to get a decent casting, just makes them less brittle when turning.

    Cool project!!! Makes me want to start casting. How did the drilled hole turn out, in terms of being centered?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 років тому

      Casting is really fun, the possibilities are almost endless!! The hole is pretty well centered. I set up that jig after marking the center on the handle. I don't think it would be very noticeable if it were off a slight bit though

  • @marklengal9990

    Zac. Do we use a release agent when making the mold. You saw Nick do this a few weeks ago with a light saber

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому

      I didn't use a release with mine, but you can. It will help with demolding and extend the life of the mold too. I haven't seen Nick's video yet, it's in my "to watch" list though =D
