We need a season 2 of these series. So many hard games waiting to be played by Ryukahr! I can hear them screaming his name. Especially Dragon’s Lair on NES!
I seem to rememeber the controls were shit, too. Slow to respond and imprecise. Made for a rather unenjoyable game, I think I finally beat it and never touched it again. Same with all the Ninja Gaiden games which I enjoyed. By contrast, MegaMan and SMB2 had such beautiful control.
remember when you had to swim PERFECTLY through the electric seaweed shit underwater maze :) that was the part i had trouble with as a little kid about 10yo. but i was the only one who could do it and i beat that game while my older brother couldnt
So glad that you cleared up how hard Contra III is on hard mode. That's my personal greatest achievement in gaming, being able to beat Contra III starting with only 3 lives. Still, I'm not even close to as well rounded as you, Ryu. Keep up the amazing work. Loved this video.
You must make a season 2, the season 1 was so awsome. The game that comes to mind that made AVGN really angry was Street Fighter 2010. Also that was one of his best episodes in my mind. We are going to hadoken up uranus.
I owned SF2010 as a kid, before I'd ever heard of Street Fighter, and it was one of my favorites! Talk about a game that gets a bad rap for reasons that have nothing to do with its actual gameplay... I mean, it is super hard and kinda bullcrap in sections, but that was pretty par for the course back in those days. Definitely a hidden gem... or maybe an unfairly maligned gem?
Nik Danger yeah, it had some really interesting sections like one with waterfall of somesort, and maging how to hit boss. Frustrating at first. One secret how to beat this game, dont die or lose powerups. :)
I do not find the game that hard. Even when I die and am left with a very short range fire. It's not like I speedrun the game but I usually don't get stuck for too long and can beat it in under an hour. The final stage I once saw as unreasonable as a kid but through a few simple techniques can beat it with regularity now and it doesn't scare me. It is a very fun and, unlike it's title, original game. It's hard but I think it's just the right level of hard for its era.
Is that the one who AVGN actually beat? If so, then I would say it's not _that_ hard, as he's frankly a pretty lousy gamer. I reckon that Silver Surfer made him more angry. SF2010 was infuriating because it clearly was beatable, but had some BS details pretty common at the day that made it hard, at least the end. I've watched him since his breakthrough in 2006.
A hidden gem in NES, that is hard, but fair: Street Fighter 2010. I highly recomend it. (I think of myself a good-great NES player. Beaten D&D3 without taking a hit, beaten Battletoads with 5 deathts, Punch out (tyson without a hit taken).. This StreetFighter 2010 gave me trouble at first. But cotrols are great, charracter does excatly what you input, so every mistake one makes, can be solved by looking in the mirror. =) -Sinsorrow_EU
I was like 8 years old and I'll never forget the spike area near the end of the game in TMNT, never got passed that part. Also, Super Contra was hard as hell.
The spike area was a nightmare. The trick was go slowish or you would shoot over the gap. I would always use Michaelangelo because he was the worst turtle. If I lost him it wasn't a big deal and could rescue him in the next stage.
Season 2 considerations. - Friday the 13th (NES) - Actraiser II (SNES) - Kid Chameleon (GEN) - Contra Hard Corps (GEN) Personally, I'd add NES 'classic' Legacy of the Wizard, but it's kinda long and obtuse. Dunno how well it'd make for a video.
Desdinova Eternal light It is a very hard game. Well, not at the start, but the game is long and some stages can suck up a lot of lives as you try to figure out how to get through them. It's not quite Battletoads level, but it is hard enough to be listed among any 'hardest SNES/Genesis era platformer' list.
They physics were a bit awkward i remember, and some parts were hard. But i was a crazy kid though, challenging myself to finish games without taking a hit and the like. I was much better back then. Either way id watch ryu play it definitely! Whats wrong with sonic 2 for gamegear? I played the SMS version
Contra III is hard when you play alone. Stage 5 boss is tough because the room keeps spinning crazy. On two play mode the don't thing the spins is the boss
Silver Surfer is "not that bad".....WOW, you're a legend then cause I would put it at top 3, and I've beaten most of these, I wouldn't put Battletoads at 1 either but I see why many would. Hat's off man.
You played a lot of great games. Here are some more that I remember: SNES- Hagane, R Type 3, Earthworm Jim 2 NES- Master Blaster, Rygar (VERY HARD), The Adventure of Bayou Billy, Top Gun (1 or 2), The Karate Kid, The Simpsons, Yo!Noid If you want to dip into SEGA- Comix Zone, Super Turrican (1 or 2), Sonic Spinball Seeing you play SEGA would be fun! Loved this series, can't wait for Season 2!!!
I beat Battletoads a year after it came out. Was really one of the best marketed games on TV, so instant hype. Seriously, took almost a year of trial and error to complete it. A couple years ago, I tried playing through it again and I was like, "F this." I forgot how much pain tolerance and concentration I used to have. Old man.
Dude Ryu- this is the only gaming channel I'll ever watch. That was an adventure watching you clobber these titles, and this video is an excellent summary. Nice work!
My dude, you got me shook with this. You are my dog, these games are "harder than fossilized triceratops testicles" and massive props for beating all of them. You are the real mvp. Do more, I suggest Dark Castle on sega Genesis or Superman 64
When I was 7 years old and loved the ninja turtles that under water level was really hard. I never beat the game. Also the jurassic park game id leave the console on over night because there was no saving your spot. I’d play for a couple days and get close to the end and wake up one day and find my mom/ sister turned the counsel off. I eventually beat it after the hole family could feel my pain. One of my favorite early games was dragons crest. It was fun and rewarding with Power ups.
Man, what a great video! The editing is flawless and the text is on point. I was expecting the AVGN references and was not disappointed. Congratulations on the GREAT job, not only playing and beating the games, but in wrapping it up in such a fantastic way!
Beating them on livestreams is fine by me, just upload them (either in part, taking only the successful runs of each stage and marking how many attempts it took to get to it or something, or in whole) to UA-cam afterwards; unlisted or on a second channel that is strictly for livestream archives. Twitch doesn't save VODs forever, after all.
Maybe Double Dragon 3 was made with just coop in mind. I was really surprised to see it on this list because thats the first game I ever beat and I was 4 years old and my brother was 7.
I remember renting Double Dragon 3 as a kid and feeling like I just got slapped in the face. For a recommendation in the next season, try out Rocket Knight Adventures or its sequel Sparkster. Both are pretty tough and really fun.
I remember beating Super Ghouls and Ghosts when I was 10. I recently went back and beat it again, it holy crap... I forgot how hard it was. How was I so persistent as a kid?!?!
Here are some extraordinarily hard sega genesis game suggestions: Shadow of the Beast 2 Ecco the Dolphin (or Ecco the tides of time is hard as well) The Adventures of Batman and Robin Eternal Champions
You are a madman for making this into a multiple season sort of series; RIP your sanity. That being said, I honestly can't wait for the next season and to see you play through the yet-to-be-released Battletoads :)
The jetpack hallway in TMNT had an exploit. If you slowly walked forward and a Jetpack guy appeared then quickly go back a few steps and they disappear off screen. I managed to figure this out when I was a kid. Thank god because those laser beams were a pain in the arse!
Some recommendations: Street Fighter 2010, Milon's Secret Castle, Castlevania 3, Altered Beast, Columns 3, and Gaiares on Sega Genesis. Thank you and good luck.
I remember that star wars game, after 1st level I felt like I was playing the best game ever released to date. Then I struggled through 2nd level for a couple days till beat it. Next few weeks I tried my best to pass level 3. I could not, and sold the game.
Super ghouls and ghosts on the SNES is an absolute nightmare, I first got it when it was first released and could never beat it, fast forward 29 years and I’m playing it on the SNES classic and it still owns me!
Only if he's a Twitch Partner, and only within the first 30 days, as recorded by the Twitch VOD service. After that, Ryu can do whatever he wants with the footage.
You know you have to include a Touhou game in a season 2, on Lunatic difficulty. There's a lot of them, though Touhou 11 and 15 are considered the hardest.. Touhou 15 is on Steam, untranslated, but I assume the story is a non-factor. 東方天空璋 ~ Hidden Star in Four Seasons Otherwise, all can be found at a "cheaper" price elsewhere. Rabi-Ribi (also on Steam) is another difficult game once you unlock the last difficulty, but yes, unlock. You have to play through the game twice to unlock the hardest difficulty, though there's of course ways around this, like downloading a save file for it. Or if you're a madman, play one of the unused difficulties, which are not meant to be possible to finish.
I'd say 12 is much harder than 11, even though it's one of my least favorite in the series because the resource system is ass. That's probably perfect for a series like this, though.
Funny story: the Dark Queen can still kill you after she's beaten, when she rises through center screen for the credits setup. I lost my last life once that way and got the Game Over screen instead of the winning credits, just for standing in the wrong place :/
Maybe, some The Battletoads fan? As for me, I don't think that it can be on the 1st place. There were REALLY difficult games unbeatable for me and friends for years when I was a kid, but it was possible to pass Battletoads.
If you watched the live streams you knew 100% it was going to be number 1. It probably took 3-4 times longer to beat Battletoads than any other game on the list for Ryu :D
Ikaruga was recently ported to the Switch. It's a top down shooter, but it has a super unique and fun gameplay mechanic that makes it a joy to play even though it's hard as hell. You haven't done any games beyond the SNES era, so this one would be a great addition to the next season. It's a classic for a reason. Play it!
No shout out to you ryu. Your doing retro and making them work that's not easy. I was one that finally downloaded twitch to watch the videos of you beating them. So I'm good on ryu content for the next like week. If I had one complaint about you it's that you could literally release 40 more videos a week and I'd totally fucking watch them all. Comes from a good place man. You rock
silentshadow 83 you're also right. It just threw me off that they had it in the playlist on Twitch lol. It's kinda confusing that he has the link to the EHG playlist on that video too. I've noticed he only links related playlists on his videos (as in Mario Maker videos link to a Mario Maker playlist, etc.)
You should try Chakan: The Forever Man for Genesis. We had Battletoads and rented Ninja Turtles, but we always considered Chakan the hardest game we had ever played.
Wow, I definitely had a radically different impression of Super Star Wars ESB than most of y'all. I think my friend and I actually beat it at one point. If not, we got pretty far. I would say the graphics are gorgeous, IMO prettier than any of the other games on this list. I also didn't think it was janky at all. It felt really smooth and solid to me, and I loved all the secrets and crazy awesome powerups stashed everywhere.
People don't complain about Battletoads' turbo tunnel stage because it is the hardest one but because many people (like me for example) barely ever made it past that stage. Note, however, that I played this game on SNES, not NES where the stages are different (some just a tiny bit, some a lot).
Great video Ryu. Been following the series, and this was a fantastic way to conclude Season 1 of it. Also I must say I felt a little point of pride when the hardest game on your list was the one I got furthest in. I got to the last level of Battletoads... just one time. Never beat it.
EVERY UA-cam video that I have seen with the title “hardest” Has 90% of the games that my friends and I played. No wonder they seemed impossible and we only beat a couple at best!
Great video. Metal Storm for NES on expert was especially brutal and difficult to figure out what the fuck to even do at points. Gun.Smoke for arcade is one of the most insane 2D games Ive played, and would be great to see on the channel too.
In Battletoads As far as I remember there was no limit to 1ups you could get. In stage two you can juggle birds off the wall and get dozens of extra lives.
Would you be receptive to me making an EHG from scratch? I promise you NES style graphics, sub-optimal controls, ambiguous objectives, and unfair deaths.
While Super Ghouls N Ghosts is a pain in the ass, it's significantly easier to play than most of the other games on this list, thanks to it's precision control (once you get used to it) and superior visuals. Even when you're dying, you look good doing it.
Ryu, you asked for some feedback, so I want to give three thoughts I have: 1. I loved this series as you did it and think the format should remain fairly similar (as a blind "let's play" more than a researched and practiced playthrough). However, if you really enjoy some of the games you play, I'd enjoy watching more than just one episode for that game. 2. NES and SNES games are so fun and nostalgic to watch (and probably tend to fit this format well due to having more arcade-style gameplay than full stories). That said, it'd be great to see games from other systems, such as I Wanna Be the Boshy, I Wanna Run the Marathon, or Vectorman--maybe even games like Jet Grind Radio (a.k.a. Jet Set Radio) in a separate category. 3. It would be really cool to involve people from the speedrun community in some of your vids if the game you're showcasing has good speedrunners who still play. It would be a way to expand people's interactions with these games and broaden your appeal. Thanks for these first 10 episodes! They were fun to watch, and I can't wait for more :)
I recommend the puzzle game Baba Is You. No peeking at solutions. I've been puzzling over level Meta-15 ("The Box") for months. Ryu hates puzzles. It'd just be him staring at the screen asking "what is this" for hours on end. :D
Damn. Can't believe you beat all these in 10 weeks. Amazing. It took me 10 weeks just for ghosts and goblins. I've beat 6 of the 10. Ghosts and goblins by far gave me the most trouble. TMNT and double dragon 3 were relatively easy.
Love this series but there’s not enough love for the Genesis!! Here’s a few suggestions: Alien Soldier(Hard Mode) Comix Zone Chakan The Forever Man X-Men Contra Hard Corps
I never beat Battletoads. I got to the tower once on my last continue with one life and died instantly. That demoralized me enough to stop trying. I absolutely HATED the stage where you had to race the rat to the bomb and the stage immediately after where you’re chased by a goddamn peppermint candy! Those two and the ducts stage before always took all my lives even if I hardly died any before reaching them. The hardest thing about the ducts is that unlike in previous stages, even the between-race sections are difficult. All the water enemies either one shot kill you or knock you into the spikes. I think I was 14 the last time I played this. Its so weird how well I remember it.
I had Megaman Anniversary Collection for PS2 and GameCube. They say Megaman 1 was hard but I did not have a problem with it. I finished Megaman 1 and Megaman 3 on the collection. The rest was just soooo hard!
I loved Battletoads! My brother and I would farm extra lives by juggling the birds in the second level tunnel. It was the only way we could beat the game! Also... we never found those warps... had to beat the game the long way!
You did great work with these series and while I'm not usually able to catch your live streams due to time difference in Eastern Europe, watching these videos is always real fun and knowing you beat each on them on hardest difficulty is quite mind boggling. Take your time and return stronger than ever with a new batch of games for season 2, maybe you could emphasize more SNES library in future, but its up to you. :)
ordering these games was harder than beating them
ryukahr Surprised you're up this early after that marathon yesterday!
ryukahr The beards looking great my man
Can u reupload the Bob Ross Mario? It looks awesome but* it won't load =(
ryukahr ryu I was above u... idk I think I deserve a pin XD
Where did you even find them? Some of them I just found for horrible prices... o.o
"Fuck. Shit. Balls. Dammit."
You reading those off a script was one of the best parts in this video
We need a season 2 of these series. So many hard games waiting to be played by Ryukahr! I can hear them screaming his name. Especially Dragon’s Lair on NES!
YES! Dragon’s Lair is an utter nightmare, I think it's the most difficult I ever played
Dragon's Liar is more unfair
Season 2 of EHG has me even more excited than season 9 of Game of Thrones...that's saying something
season 9? i feel like i'm missing a joke here?
DGR hi dad
There is no season 9
DGR = Waifu
Dude, trying to play that TMNT NES game at 6 years old was an anxiety ridden NIGHTMARE. How could this be. I loved TMNT SO MUCH!!!

Damn, this guy is my hero. I had Ghosts and Goblin for the NES growing up, and I couldn't even get past the first minute.
*We have been blessed. Thank you for this video Ryu.*
Season 2 considerations.
- Friday the 13th (NES)
- Actraiser II (SNES)
- Kid Chameleon (GEN)
- Contra Hard Corps (GEN)
Personally, I'd add NES 'classic' Legacy of the Wizard, but it's kinda long and obtuse. Dunno how well it'd make for a video.
Kid chameleon wasnt that hard right? Really fun game though
DEL - Are you kidding about Kid Chameleon? it's the hardest platform game ever made on a console
Actraiser 2 is up there with the hardest games of all time.
This is the premium content we need, but don't deserve. Thank you, Ryu.
Watching you play Ghosts and Goblins for the first time ever was very cathartic for me. Much appreciated.
I challenge you to beat Contra: Hard Corps for Mega Drive/Genesis. All I can say is; good luck.
Real1Gaming that game is not so hard.. end that game without dying ...
Real1Gaming it’d be fun to watch him play it!
@@Vic-Vega Now I'm curious. I've passed battletoads, so I wonder if I could beat these.
Hard Corps is no cakewalk, but Contra III is a bit tougher.
Contra III is hard when you play alone. Stage 5 boss is tough because the room keeps spinning crazy. On two play mode the don't thing the spins is the boss
One of my greatest memories was watching my cousin beat Battletoads as an adult after we struggled through it together to no avail as kids years ago.
Silver Surfer is "not that bad".....WOW, you're a legend then cause I would put it at top 3, and I've beaten most of these, I wouldn't put Battletoads at 1 either but I see why many would. Hat's off man.
I love the battle toads pause track when counting down to the next number.
This tune alone makes you pause the game instead of turning it off xD
You played a lot of great games. Here are some more that I remember:
SNES- Hagane, R Type 3, Earthworm Jim 2
NES- Master Blaster, Rygar (VERY HARD), The Adventure of Bayou Billy, Top Gun (1 or 2), The Karate Kid, The Simpsons, Yo!Noid
If you want to dip into SEGA- Comix Zone, Super Turrican (1 or 2), Sonic Spinball
Seeing you play SEGA would be fun!
Loved this series, can't wait for Season 2!!!
Bayou Billy wow nice name drop!
Honestly, my favorite series. Thanks for putting up with these games. Also, after you recover, gimme moar, please!
Season 2 when?
Hard games are like spicy food. They're a pleasure up to a point
I would love to watch you play Amagon for NES.
Old man.
Ryu you should play Battletoads Double Dragon. It was the hardest game from my childhood, I never got past stage 3.
oooooooh yeah, i back you on this one! It would be awesome to see him play it
All the games here: 0:30,1:10,2:37,3:54,4:41,5:35,7:16,8:56,11:00,13:14 (some extra 2:39)Nice job! Nice games! Nice list! Nice video. Thnx!

Ryu and his wife. :D
Dude Ryu- this is the only gaming channel I'll ever watch. That was an adventure watching you clobber these titles, and this video is an excellent summary. Nice work!
I'm surprised the Cuphead tutorial isn't here
or the Driver Tutorial :D

Bayou Billy
Another hard-ass "gem" that most people don't know about. Ugh!
I remember beating Super Ghouls and Ghosts when I was 10. I recently went back and beat it again, it holy crap... I forgot how hard it was. How was I so persistent as a kid?!?!
Congrats! On a job well done however there are still more games to conquer!
I have every system since Atari and have all these games but haven’t beaten any of them lmao. I’m living my childhood through you
Here are some extraordinarily hard sega genesis game suggestions:
Shadow of the Beast 2
Ecco the Dolphin (or Ecco the tides of time is hard as well)
The Adventures of Batman and Robin
Eternal Champions
They had like 30 tremendously unbeatable games.
The nostalgia from looking at those old video game boxes blew me away!
Let that beard grow wild brother. Looking good.
You are a madman for making this into a multiple season sort of series; RIP your sanity. That being said, I honestly can't wait for the next season and to see you play through the yet-to-be-released Battletoads :)
Act Raiser 2 for SNES

pretty sure you can't, and or, are not allowed to upload Twitch archival streams to UA-cam.......
chris meulen oh, ok. Thanks for the explanation

Great job beating these hard games. I'm still convinced that Bayou Billy for the NES is the hardest game.
Never had a problem with Empire Strikes Back as a kid , finished it on hard......double dragon 3 kicked my ass tho
I beat double Dragon III by myself on hard.
I remember having a hard time as a kid. The Vader fight in particular I remember took me forever.
I laughed so hard when I saw Battle Toads. The whole debacle with its creation is hilarious.
Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde!
Funny story: the Dark Queen can still kill you after she's beaten, when she rises through center screen for the credits setup. I lost my last life once that way and got the Game Over screen instead of the winning credits, just for standing in the wrong place :/
Who's the one person that disliked this? Honestly...
Bobby Caifano You know it was Thomandy. Lol
People that couldn't beat these games :^]
Disliked your comment.
Shout-out to thedragonfeeney
Nintender I need videos with Ryu and Feeney
Ikaruga was recently ported to the Switch. It's a top down shooter, but it has a super unique and fun gameplay mechanic that makes it a joy to play even though it's hard as hell. You haven't done any games beyond the SNES era, so this one would be a great addition to the next season. It's a classic for a reason. Play it!
play streets of rage 3 hardest setting and get good ending for season 2, that shit is tough
You rock
Where’s punch out?
ChainsGoldMask you're right, he forgot about it lol...
silentshadow 83 you're also right. It just threw me off that they had it in the playlist on Twitch lol. It's kinda confusing that he has the link to the EHG playlist on that video too. I've noticed he only links related playlists on his videos (as in Mario Maker videos link to a Mario Maker playlist, etc.)
silentshadow 83 you got me...it came out in between (and it’s not easy) , really should have been included.
You should try Chakan: The Forever Man for Genesis. We had Battletoads and rented Ninja Turtles, but we always considered Chakan the hardest game we had ever played.
Chakan is definitely harder than Battletoads. For sure.
Good work Ryu I'm glad I caught a few of your streams while I wasn't busy
Keep it up!
I think it might be time for a classic rpg series? The nostalgia with Ryu commentary would make for a super entertaining experience
It felt really smooth and solid to me, and I loved all the secrets and crazy awesome powerups stashed everywhere.
its horrible
People don't complain about Battletoads' turbo tunnel stage because it is the hardest one but because many people (like me for example) barely ever made it past that stage. Note, however, that I played this game on SNES, not NES where the stages are different (some just a tiny bit, some a lot).
Midnight resistance will make you cry. Also has pretty much the best game music ever.
My 10 year old self had no idea Battletoads had 12 levels. 3 was all could ever see
The Nightmare of Druaga for PS2 is the hardest game of all, but it will also make you hate life. Your call.
congrats and kudos for completing all these games WITHOUT save states, a lot of people can't do that.
Well Battletoads in first place, no surprise there. Great video btw!
In Battletoads As far as I remember there was no limit to 1ups you could get. In stage two you can juggle birds off the wall and get dozens of extra lives.
This video was awesome! I'd love to see more videos like this from you!
Would you be receptive to me making an EHG from scratch? I promise you NES style graphics, sub-optimal controls, ambiguous objectives, and unfair deaths.
This series was amazing. Season 2 needs that spiderman/xmen game from snes
Definitely like the format! You can definitely do another count down! Your jokes are funny and it's to the point. Beginning to end.
I only watched this to make sure super ghouls and ghosts was in here. well done, upvoted
Jeez, Fantasy Zone on the GameGear was tough. There was a boss that I never could kill.
While Super Ghouls N Ghosts is a pain in the ass, it's significantly easier to play than most of the other games on this list, thanks to it's precision control (once you get used to it) and superior visuals. Even when you're dying, you look good doing it.
Ryu, you asked for some feedback, so I want to give three thoughts I have:
Really cool video Ryu, nice top 10 !!!
love the first topic switch with the battletoads sounds going haha

When the good stuff is kickin' in... 😂
My thoughts exactly.
Super R Type, awesome game, only got past stage 3 a few times...
I don't know how hard it is, but legacy of the wizard was so cryptic I couldn't make any progress as a kid.
I recommend the puzzle game Baba Is You. No peeking at solutions. I've been puzzling over level Meta-15 ("The Box") for months.
Ryu hates puzzles. It'd just be him staring at the screen asking "what is this" for hours on end. :D
Crotch Fire, Spike Room, Turbo Tunnel - you're a god Ryu
The reason Turbo Tunnel is taken as the hardest is because most people never passed through it to see the later stages.
Here’s a few suggestions:
Alien Soldier(Hard Mode)
Comix Zone
Chakan The Forever Man
X-Men
Contra Hard Corps
LOVED IT. the whole series was great.
