In case you haven't noticed, Joel is already subconsciously considering Ellie as family. At the campfire, he told her to dream of sheep on the moon. At this point, he already connects their dreams. And in Jackson at dinner, he wants Maria to go, because the conversation is only for family. But Ellie is allowed to stay seated.

They never mention the name of the large monster infected in the remainder of the series, They're called Bloaters.
6:25 Considering most of the food to the Islands is imported. I would say there is a very good chance they were largely infected. Any few survivors left are most likely experiencing a Tom Hanks scenario of Castaway plus any cultural skills they were able to retain with the addition of the infected.
Ok, the stages of infection are:
1. Runner: this is an infected for more than 12 hours to a few days, still look 100% human (mad, crazy, cannibal human).
2. Stalker: still human face, but the fungus is growin around his head/body.
3. Clicker: Infected for several weeks/months, no face, no eyes.
4. Bloater: Infected for year(s), the fungus had grow in several layers around the boyd, making them bullet resistant.
The song at the end of this one is a cover of the Depeche Mode (80s) song we hear on the radio at the end of episode one. The singer is actually the daughter of one of the guys in the band.
Oh and if I remember correctly, the old couple in the beginning weren't in the game at all. I love their inclusion here. Really good comic relief lol

Probably late but here is how the infection scale (easiest to worst):
1. Runners
2. Stalkers
3. Clickers (the ones from episode 2)
4. Bloaters (the one from episode 5)
5. ??? (this one actually would be a spoiler from Game 2 so I won't list that one)
Also the native american couple are *not* from the game and they are a fun addition! The whole town actually is from Game 2 not 1 but I guess if you have to build the set anyway why not use it for both seasons was very pleasantly surprised to see it so early (in the game they just go to the dam and it is less cool)!
Not exactly a spoiler unless you've actually played Part II.

Another great reaction Lex. This one is notable for the assertion you make early on about why Joel is psychologically hurting, just being with Ellie... not to mention continuing to develop feelings for her. Your assertion better explains the "Your right, you're not my daughter... and I'm not your dad." line. Though everyone likes the scene when Joel finally sees Tommy again, YOU seemed to appreciate it quite a bit more... than most of us... ;-) And your overwhelm with death... yeah, we all feel that too. Great react.
Big guy is called a Bloater. They have been infected for years and years. The fungus keeps growing over itself so it acts as an armor and makes them bigger and bigger.

This is the first time you will learn this from me... The whole controlling idea of both the game and the series is based on one of the ideas of the book by F.M.Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" (Miller brothers). And at the end of the series and the game, one of the dialogues of the book is filmed: "Even the happiness of the whole world is not worth one tear... (further spoiler)".
Anyone who has played the game knows that a balalaika melody is playing before the final credits... it was the authors of the game who bowed to the author of the idea - a Russian writer.

If you enjoyed that opening scene with the older indigenous couple, I think you'd like series "Reservation Dogs" (Not Reservoir Dogs). Executive produced by Taika Waititi. It is almost all indigenous cast, writers, crew.
On your island and Hawaii comment. I wonder if some more remote islands in the pacific around New Guinea, Polynesia, that would get shipments of flour possibly later than the main continents, might not have any infected. Because Joel's timeline from ep 3, which seems fairly realistic, has it hitting the shelves and everything collapsing over the weekend. So those remote island might not have even received any tainted items yet.
Joel's loose reins tie is actually how it is done normally. A loose wrap lets the horse feel it and know it should stay, but also lets it get away if it has to. You only hard tie if you know the horse is in a safe place.

@tellanpairama9245 - thanks for appreciating this most personally emotionally connecting episode for Joel and Ellie. I like it too. But we are decidedly in the extreme minority, as episodes like 8, the finale, 5, and of course long, long time, are considered true epics of television history
Haha yes, personally ep 4, 6, and 9 my top 3... does my head in thinking about the masterpiece writing behind tlou, also great acting fuses the package together, I find it hard to imagine any other cast
