I just wanted to say that I admire all of you for what you are doing on this channel. It takes great courage and conviction to speak out against such awful tyranny. You have my utmost respect.
I love this channel for their hard work to reveal the real situation in north Korea. I hope with all my hearth that ALL Koreans can see the joy of this world and the happiness of life. Until i found this channel I knew nothing! We never learned anything about Korea, except the Korean war, and it makes me sad. We should teach children the hardships of other countries right now, not the history. Although history is a great teacher, doesn't mean it can help the people living in the present.

Sadly, there are so many who want the U.S. to be just like North Korea. They have no idea what they do want. If they would simply talk to people from North Korea or lived behind the Iron Curtain or came from Cuba or escaped from Mainland China they may rethink what they want. @@SoldierPoet Acctually it's not weird for people living in better conditions to be that way. They never saw real war, real hardships and the horror of a one-sided dictatorship. They are living in a four wall covered fantasy, which in my opinion is worse, that protects them from all outside turmoil. It's sad some people never expand their knowlage and culture outside of their walls.

Every individual has the choice to do as they wish with their lives. Agreed. My family legally migrated to America in the early 80s. Parents worked 2 jobs each to provide for their sons. When the time came to be citizens, they didn’t think twice. Parents have passed away but I will never stop to appreciate what America offered a poor family from the Philippines. A better life thru hard work. We never expected to be given anything. Just the opportunity to work for our family dreams.

True. No place is perfect and it's not always a place for others but it still may be better for others too. This goes all around the world. Some places are just better fit for other people for them to move forward and sometimes they will prefer things differently.

My father-in-law was a veteran of the Korean War and at his funeral a group from the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) attended. They all saluted him for his service.
My grandpa was a veteran of the Korean War and they also did a full military service for him. My great uncle just died at the age of 98 and he was on the shores of Normandy on D-Day. Wild.
My father was in WW2, Korea and Vietnam.. 26 years in the military. Me? Vietnam and Desert Storm. I had a draft number of 23. They were sending all draftees to Nam. So I joined USAF.
I'd like to hear about this supposed "pension" of children of Korean Wars because when my dad died in 1991 (yes, he was in Korea) I was told "no, we stopped that last year!". So 4 years of Nursing School at a private Christian university all paid for by my 3-4 jobs I managed to scrounge up!
I like this channel, hope the North Korean People will be free soon.
My husband of 33 years passed away last November, he was given military honors, it was the hardest thing in my life to see, it’s hard not having him around anymore..😔

The death of the GOP has caused more problems than i ever imagined. I definitely took a thriving 2 party system for granted. Now we have 1 functional party essentially and the other is a circus act.

The benefits the PD is listing, $1400 monthly pension, military academy admissions, free travel on military flights., is only for Medal of Honor recipients.
They REALLY need to do better research, they tend to only do cursory research. An MoH recipient is extremely rare.
I enjoy watching these interviews, but between the poor research and sloppy translations it is difficult.
actually all retirees can get Space Available (MAC or Military Airlift Command) flights to military destinations. for the longest time it was free for all veterans. I think they now have a small fee for it. But the thing is if there is a VIP or someone with higher priority the Veteran can be bumped from the flight and have to wait for the next available plane. When i was on active duty it was risky for active mid to lower ranked enlisted or mid or low rank officers to rely on it if they were going on or returning from leave. But for a retiree; usually the risk of being bumped of a particular was worth it because they often have no strict time line for when they have to return home or even get some where away from home. you cannot beat flying halfway around the world (to anywhere near a MAC terminal) for free or at least for cheap fees. :)

Just so you know. As a Veteran, most states have cemeteries where veterans can be buried with honor for FREE.
As veterans we now have additional benefits from the states. As an example we get into state parks for free. Most states have license tags that show veteran status, medals received, Branch of Service etc
Yes, my Dad served in Korea and Vietnam. He’s getting both a Catholic and military funeral. (He’s not well. Age 93, US Navy, CPO.)

I'm not a fan of how Kim treats his soldiers. We would treat you better as a prisoner of war than he treats you in the streets of your own country, and that's not an exaggeration. Idc what country you're from. A soldier deserves a certian level of respect for being willing to die for their people.

That was before the rice distribution network collapsed. After that, she just got the 5 cents.
Imagine being a father trying to support a family on that pension, and you'll understand why some of the parade marchers she trained with didn't want their families notified that they were dying of malnutrition. They didn't want their family to feel guilty for not sending some of their rice.
NK is such a shitshow that it's literally incredible.

Aside from the accounts of the Defectors, one of the more Striking things, when it comes to North Korea and the Conditions there, are the Satellite photos at Nighttime. with the exception of a VERY few Cities, the Country is dark, while everything around it is lit.

The mental and physical strength you displayed in your decision and execution of your defection from the north is commendable. To leave your life and family for the unknown, on the belief that life is better no matter what somewhere else! I only wish that some of my fellow countryman could understand what Freedom means to those people that have never experienced liberty and freedom. We may be good at honoring our fallen soldiers, but we could use some improving on how we treat the ones who make it home. We need more benefits, assistance and resources for our veterans. It's so easy for us to forget about them once they've removed the uniform.
Indeed. We still have homeless vets we don't care about, but when they die, we suddenly care about them.
The best thing about this channel is that they subtitle with summaries as opposed to trying to translate exactly. I speak Korean and English, and I can see how a direct translation would actually make it harder to understand her intent.

I have a lot of respect for this wonderful lady. It would be an honor as a American combat veteran to buy her a drink and learn from each other next time I can come back to South Korea
The only thing I don’t like about the topic of the US military is it tends to get romanticized as a great thing with help for everyone. That isn’t always the case. A lot of the US is Rural and it’s very hard for veterans to find doctors. Long waiting lists. They promise this money for college and other pay outs, but it can take years to authorize. The administration and distribution of medical care and funds to veterans is shaky. They also have huge histories of hiding their own war crimes and sexual assaults via having their own police. I have a friend who after waiting 1 whole year for hearing aids (he hit an ied and it blew his eardrum) he started college. They are supposed to give money for books and supplies amd it just “wasn’t ready” for the first two semesters of university. So he just didn’t have books. It’s not all perfect, but on the surface it may look that way.
I always felt weird watching these videos because in a sense they are watching propaganda videos but from the American POV...it's like they never get to be free from propaganda no mater where they go, it's sad.
Being a veteran who went to college after my service I can say that simply isn't true.

Sadly, more and more American despise these acts of appreciation and respect for America’s citizen-soldiers. It takes someone like this brave lady to appreciate these acts of kindness.
I would like to recommend a special program for those people who unhappy to be an American: We offer a one way ticket to certain countries, so they can go somewhere they want to be, on the condition they give up their citizenship and won't return. We don't have such a program here in the States now, but I think we should create one.

Many people have been doing that for years. My father was a WW2 vett, I was his caretaker for his last 9 years. My brother was a Viet Nam vet, he's still alive thank you and the family cares for him (as he does them). He has 5 kids,10 grand kids and at least 3 great grand kids plus my other brother, his wife and son. I am very into caring for our vets - we have had a lot of them in our family. It's going on every day in so many households. We have a non government program for this - but help is still needed. Homeless vets need help, and many of our vets don't have family or the family is unable to help. A program for that would be excellent.
If NK embraced Democracy they should do fantastic.

In the USA, I often see policemen and sometimes firemen who eat at the same cafe where I eat, sometimes I see an American veteran wearing a cap that shows the service he was in. When I see these people, I always tell them "Thank you for your service." For it is service to our country, whether nationally, or locally, military or in the state or just local city. They put their lives on the line to protect us. That deserves respect! It is simply my way of giving the respect that they earned.

I have a lot of medals including the Purple Heart. I don't know anything about a pension for having medals here in the U.S.

I have a meritorious commendation Ribbon and 4 Medals, two for serving off North Korea in 1968, and I don't expect anything because of them. I went out, I came back, they gave me stuff.

I have always thought the medals were more like a formal "thank you" from the military, and for recognition of their best services. Something a civilian can see and know without knowing anything more will understand this person made a special contribution, for which the whole country should be grateful.

6:30 I used to do Military Honors and did a service once to a soldier who served during the Korean War. (I've done multiple Korean War and Vietnam War services. Had a couple of WWII and present vets as well. Most of the present ones were from suicide though...) The only people who were at this specific Korean War vet's funeral were 3 Military Honor Guardsmen, 8 VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), Priest, and a Funeral Home Director. The priest ended up sending a letter to our NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge) telling him that even though no one else was present, we still held ourselves as if there were thousands of people watching us.
"On Behalf of the President of the United States of America, The United States Army, and a grateful national, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved ones honorable and faithful service." -Followed by saluting the Next of Kin
I come from something of a military family, with at least one member of each generation around the world serving in their country’s military, so I have a very high sense of respect for soldiers and the like, even if I don’t support war itself.
It'd be nice if you could replace the text translation box at the bottom, as it moves a little too fast, in favor of a spoken translator (muting down the speakers words). You can't watch the woman's facial expression (very important) and then try to read the text translation at the bottom. You can't read all the translation as it quickly disappears. However, for god's sake don't get some on the cheap voice box translator. Otherwise, these interviews are very interesting and informative.
I would like to c reaction of this lady on videos of simple people who became soldiers because thy homeland is attacked and over a night become fighters .. and win the war .. example Croatian war.. I was 3 years old and i remember all
I feel so bad for the North Korean people. They have so little and are treated so badly by their own country. They couldn't imagine how wonderful it is to be in the American military. We serve because we love our country and the freedoms it affords us. I hope one day that the North Korean government will collapse without war and the people will be embraced by South Korea. Then Korea can truly be one again and free. My prayers go out to you and all the people of North Korea. I know that many hate the U.S. but that is only because they have been lied to and deceived.

If i may, we do not hate a country(or people) but that the powers that be that threaten or attack and shackle others, we believe in equality and love for others no matter of where they come from, the religion they they worship, their physical or mental abilities or the wealth they possess, people should be able to choose what they want in career, life or religion and that women should be loved and praised,, even though not all Americans can agree on such subjects, because of only seeing the picute from 1 side, i believe and hope that 1 day we all will lean and understand what others are made to see and believe.. then start living in peace, love and understanding and spend less hating and separating. My Grandfather was a veteran of the Korean war and my Father was stationed on the boarder in the late 70's, and my mother lived there during part of his tour. I was conceived there. Korea is a part of my family history. I am happy you decided to go to SK and are learning about the US as I imagine most information allowed by NK is propaganda. I wish you peace and happiness 😊
I am so sorry your country is under the control of a Dictator, it makes me so angry that he holds himself so above his people😡. No one should go hungry while he lives a life of luxury! Many of us try to remember and thank the living Veterans for their Sacrifice and Service. It is because of them, that we have this country. It is not perfect, but for now, we are free. If that ever changes, many of us will make the sacrifice to eliminate those who would enslave us.
Check how Canada deals with the fallen and show them the hiway of heroes.

In Canada, when soldier dies in the line of duty, there is usually a procession from the airport to the funeral home. In the city I used to live in there was a special highway blocked off during the procession and people and forst responsders line up for miles along the route and is often broadcasted live.
Career military can make a lot of money in the Canadian forces. Soldiers can get even advanced degrees paid for. I have a few relatives who were career military. I used to work for someone who was making a six figure salary and still is. His pension is more than most people get. Of xourse military salary depends on your rank and job. He also has his own business that he was trained for while in the military now that he makes even more than he did in the military.

Ahh, I remember us coming to guard the DMZ line from Ft. Lewis, Wa in '96. Most of the UN aid food shipments were seized by the military, the rest left to rot spoil on the docks. We were waiting for a flood of starved civilians. All we got were a few defecting border guards. I guess it's tough to crawl thru the DMZ after a four year famine... Never heard of a civilian making it.

I believe that North Korean soldiers should be remembered and honored as well. Why? Because, even though they might simply be trying to get a better life for their families, or have been brainwashed by the hideous Kim family, they served their country as best as they could. Much like how those who fought for the Confederacy in America, or Nazi Germany, or the Soviet Union; right or wrong, they were willing to lay down their lives to serve and defend. That has to be worth something. I just wish it was for the right principles.
Freedom for N Korea. The US is far from perfect but looking at the broad spectrum, there is a lot we can do to help as well as improve ourselves. I hope the N Korean people can be free soon.

President Obama got onto a helicopter, realised he hadn’t saluted the solder. So he got off, walked to the soldier, standing right in front of him and saluted. He said something too, I’m sure it would have been an apology.
I can’t imagine the mango coloured squatter who was squatting in the White House would have done that. He has no respect, he once said at a funeral…solders (like the one who passed) were stupid for joining the armed forces/military 😤
