My father was an explosives engineer working for Hercules power company for thirty years He specialized in open pit mines in the south west states of the USA. Open pit Copper mines in Arizona were a big part of his explosive skills. Occasionally he did jobs for various south west states that wanted to build a new highway or correct mistakes made when the road was first dug. Such as blasting away over hanging rock faces or reducing the face angle to prevent loose rock from rolling down slope and out onto the highway with out warning. He blasted a road that ran from Los Angeles California to Las Vegas Nevada a distance of 297 miles. His blasting efforts took about two years to complete. That highway is now one of the busiest roads in California and Nevada. This was in the late fifties early sixties. He took me along on one of the sections he was blasting which went up through some hills out in the middle of the Mohave desert. We used an old fashioned plunger detonator which used a magneto to generate enough juice to fire the blasting caps. He gave me the job of being the guy on the detonator. It was about one half mile long and climes through some of the hills. A loud siren was sounded so everyone would take cover. He would loudly call out, FIRE IN THE HOLE!!! That was my signal to push the plunger as hard as I could. Which I did. The hills lifted up off the ground and fell back in pieces. I was twenty and it was a big thrill to see all that rock and dust and noise. We were in a bunker about 1500 yards from the blast and yet some very small pieces of rock landed just in front of us. The shot was loaded with 80% gelamite high explosive.
Sounds like you had a great time Tim, bit of a worry though if there were bits coming down near you 1500 yards from the blast!!!!! I would get hung out to dry for that these days.
Packing a lunch box, load up the pickup and literally having a blast at work. 👌 Relaxing day, having not to think much about complex patterns and property protection. Thanks for another great video.
Those are dream shots. Wide open space, no cover, beautiful day, and let the good times roll. I will probably wear this video out watching it a couple of dozen times. Really great camera work, and one of the best videos so far. Thanks Dave. Cheers.
Hey Dave, that was awesome 👏. Great to see uncovered shots flying everywhere. Thank you for taking us along to enjoy the big bang of those marbles.😀😀👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Hi Dave, You out-did yourself this time! Absolutely awesome!! Seeing those 300 to 400 kilo chunks fly and do cartwheels was amazing! This really made my morning! Stay safe. Jim
Had to watch this one twice!! :) ... Great video! .. The real satisfaction is the time and annoyance being saved by the farmer after this, with reduced detours ,,, and increased plant-able land area :)
You must just love your job some days. That was very spectacular and some of those pieces of rock were quite large being hoisted well into the air. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely top job Dave, the devils marbles is a great description for this lot. Looks like you might be back later for more given how many there were at the start.
Oh so many questions ;) 5:40 No delay. 3 holes at once. Going for a lifting shot? This and the forest road. It's similar rock isn't it? What is the density per foot (30 cm) of explosives? 1.5 inch holes (3.5 cm(?)) What is the explosive? Watergel? Anfo. Looked like sausages going in but I never saw you tamp them. Stem yes but not tamp. I think you top primed them. Non-el or primacord delays? I learned in the 70's underground and then lobbed watergel at snow in 1kg over-wapped shots on double primed safety fuses with pull- wire igniters. Not exactly similar experiences. I recognize the drilling though and the lubricator. I had bad experiences because of a lubricator. You have brave cameras.
So many questions! some of these were connected with det cord and all holes fired at the same time, some of using nonel dets and delay clips. the explosive used was 32mm packaged emulsion and ANFO in 38mm (1.5 inch) holes. The rock was fine grained Granite.
there is just something so damn satisfying about an uncovered shot where you don't have to be concerned about the fly!! and that last one is what i call an example of the perfect shot!!! although the hat with the respirator and coveralls does have a sci-fi movie feel to this one!!
Always a pleasure to just stand back and let 'er rip. I understand why soil coverings are needed, but I really enjoy your vids where you don't have to worry.
I was watching this while 'she who must be obeyed ' was watching some c--p on TV, so I was listening through head phones; that sure shifted my ear wax. I did worry that your drone might not survive a couple of those, too. I loved that !!
The force with which even the small fragments impact is sobering. And to see the bigger ones flying like leaves in a windstorm... wow, just wow. Many thanks, Dave. Stay well.
Another great day with demo Dave. Looks like hard work drilling the holes. But the satisfaction of blowing shit up must be so good at the end of a day. Looks like way more fun no cover.
Love the self extracting/ uncovered blasting of the devil's testicles. lol Great content Dave! I'm sure the farmer was grateful, but I wonder what he's going to hit with his plow that is just under the top soil. You may be back for an encore at that site. I like that track of music when you play it. It sounds like "Hold on Loosely" by 38 Special. One of my favorite bands.
My dad just purchased a couple vintage blasting machines / plungers like in your thumbnail. They are really neat and something different to add to his collection of random things. They both work to!
Good morning Dave, or evening in your case. There's nothing better to watch with a fresh brewed coffee on a Saturday morning than some unconstrained blasting.
These uncovered explosions are by far the most satisfying! The Devil's "Marbles"?? I could think of a much better name but it wouldn't be suitable for UA-cam! 😂
Good morning Demolition Dave! thanks for another interesting video, your job seems like a real fun one and you're definitely good at what you do. So cool seeing this! Have a wonderful day bud. Wish you the best, excited for the next video!
Watching things go bang is always great, I'm not sure if its good that I find them more exciting when they are near someone, (else's), house or a large diameter sewage line. Human nature I guess. I add that it was Guy Fawkes night here in UK this weekend when blowing stuff up is the order of the day.
Wonderful stuff Dave - buckets of satisfaction. So good seeing the fly rock for a change and some of the big a$$ chunks going skywards - whole 'nother level of enjoyment :) Apart from the effort of drilling I'd say that all counts as a real 'fun day' ! Great footage. Still always intrigued just how these things get there in the first place - often very random in distribution.
Dang Dave, That looked like If I may say, A Fun Day of Blasting Rock. I would of love to have been there to see that. And you didn't have to cover anything. Thanks Dave, Enjoyed this video.

Right into a blackberry patch. When I asked to blow it was handed hand drills and a dogwood branch for wedges. I will never tire of this. can't tell you how many times I went to that field to water the holes.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Yea, dogwood wedges are a poor man's expando. When done, like my first tree falling, pop said" well see you worried it to death.".

Yeah, I would generally load free standers at about half the rate as in ground ones. I have done numerous experiments with a few brands of 1.4's (and black powder) and feel that I don't get as much bang for my buck, and there is no local supply here in Melbourne.

The angelic sound of devils marbles being blown up. Marvelous
