The free space inside the 16 inch laptops is because most companies use the exact same motherboards and other compontents for the 14 inch and 16 inch versions. Unfortunately the task was not to design a great 16inch laptop and take advantage of the extra space but to fit the 14inch motherboard they already have with minimal modifications to the bigger chassis
It's easy to explain why the coil is missing. In the first few seconds of the video, you clearly mentioned and showed that the laptop had been opened before-likely for cleaning purposes. If they used a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, it’s quite easy for components to get accidentally pulled off the board. I’ll soon publish a video about a graphic card repair where a customer used a vacuum cleaner and sucked two capacitors right off the board. After that, someone without experience tried to fix it, but instead caused even more damage. I'm not sure if I'll be able to repair it, but if I do, I’ll share it on UA-cam so people can learn not to use vacuum cleaners on electronics. Well good job, thank you .
Good job sorin 🎉 Thank you for video. Their aim is to sell people new computers when their computers break down after the warranty expires. In the past, a computer could work for 4-5 years without breaking down. Nowadays, almost no computer can make it past 3 years
Yeah luckily most things can be done on older laptops that are given away on Facebook. In Oz I struggled to sell a 16gb 256sd apple mac.laptop for 70 pounds. And even then customer haggled. No demand for laptops has driven prices way down.
I have a Dell XPS 17 Laptop, with upgrades and maintenace, it is now operating perfectly still after 12 years. Go figure. I am typing on it now. Hate the new laptops the way they feel, namely HP Models.
13:30 If you would see the atrocities I´ve seen from cheaper brands here in Argentina... Not so long ago I fixed an EXO or Bangho, I´m not sure... It had a small cooler and a simple square heatsink (not even copper), and they where not connected by anything. I think that blowing air from my own lungs would´ve been a more efficient cooling solution than that thing. I´m not even sure how many pennies can they save by not making at least a plastic channel between the fan and the heatsink so the air can actually travel properly. I love your videos. Greetings.
Had a coil half on once. Customer said not taking power. Pushed down and working ha, looked like solder cracked/wasn’t ever soldered properly. Easy pizza.
Great! It would be a good idea to at least check the switching output with an oscilloscope to make sure there isn't too much residual ripple on the 5V. In that case replace the inductor with an higher value impedance and the ripple is reduced.
You have not repaired some iPads which are well known for coils falling off the motherboard. Sometimes one will find multiple coils inside an iPad. That air chamber is like some of the newer Macbooks which supposedly use the bottom of the case to direct the exhaust out of the case
New Lenovo laptops are using low-melt solder (SnBi alloy) and it is more brittle and weaker than ordinary lead-free or leaded. (which is why coil is probably missing). Also it can ruin your day since if you mix it with leaded solder it becomes even more brittle. So yeah. Before soldering anything its a good idea to check what kind of solder did they use by poking iron at some really low temp like 180C and see if it melts solder or not.
Seriously, those guys who make the Lenovo laptops are cutting costs in the cooler. A week ago I had to fix a device which was not responding to the power button. The problem was oil leaking to the power switch/lid switch module connector from a thermal pad. The cooler was thin, the thermal pad big. Laptop was a Lenovo i5 V14 G2 if I remember correctly
I would measure the ripple, just in case, the regulator will change the chopp frequency anyway. In developing mode we have to check the resonance, heat ....
I had similar case with 43" Sony TV. It stopped working, and i found a loose coil. I soled it back, and after 2h of work it fell off again. I replace it with different one and it works fine now. No idea why the old one fell.
The heatsink is small probably because they use the same cooling in the smaller version. This is 16 inch with full keyboard. An airduct is an easy solution.
Hi Sorin, thank for the video, Crazy component falling down alone or with a Little crash, maybe i'm old like you and even me i don't understand this kind of design based only in $ good... but u know they need to sell a new One ASAP... I'm 52 old and you? Can u tell US age of your magic experience 😄 bye Francesco Timpano from Florence Italy
that is crazy Sorin where did the coil go then ? some one take it off what you do about the water damage ? do you do anything about that ok you think that is what happen then somebody opened it !!!
I guess that coil wound up in strange places… Also am I the only one now wondering when Sorin ends up building a whole calibrated power supply from calibrated wire?😉
I need help! I have a Asus Ryzen3 M515DA When I plug in a charger I get a solid white light only no fan spin and I can hear the hard drive spinning I have the main power rail and can not locate any short. I have 3.3 and 5v I have bought a CH341 programmer but I can not even connect my clip to the chip. I injected current on the 19v rail and then I got the orange charge light but sill no fan spin and no power on. can you give me advice I have some pictures if you like.
Bigger heatsink? Probably add an extra £10 to the cost of the machine. Nothing. You can buy full desktop 9cmx6cm heatsinks with fans for under £15. Any metal is better than no metal.
I had a Lenova and it was a piece of Junk. Sent it back to the factory and it was still junk when they returned it. I had many computers and laptops and that was the worst.
Ah, liquid damage mentioned. Guess that's why such a new laptop is being repaired by Sorin, instead of getting the motherboard replaced by Lenovo. Would still have the whole warranty remaining according to Lenovo's warranty check, but of course not with liquid damage.
They cut corners whenever and wherever they can.Prices ofc stay the same or go up...Nowdays the only well made laptops are the high end gaming ones, and the dell latitudes
If it isn't floating around in there I'd suggest someone's taken it off - surely if it was physical it would rip the pads and there's plenty of solder on the pads. Sometimes customers aren't truthful I guess - especially if they think it will jeopardise you taking on the job in the first place.
A coils a pretty big component with a fairly large surface area soldered to the board - it's not a tiny filter cap. If it was soldered properly I'd expect the pads or the solder to show some signs if it was physically removed and still leaves the question of where is it? I guess it could be wedged under the board somewhere but again, they are pretty big. And if the owner opened it and found the loose coil why wouldn't they say? They didn't mention water damage either and if you watch the channel regularly you'll know that the most likely way to get the job refused is to say someone else tried to fix it.
i notice on x1 carbon laptops i get from my customers the usb charging ports are push in wow , is all i can lenovo has poor parts installed this day 's lol
I will say the issue 😊 This is third world countries common issue. But unexpected in the first world 😊 Customer early went the shop. That technician got the issue . He told high price to solve the problem ... But customer said no need to repair give it back... you are not only master of repair , you are very good detective !!!
We have picture!
That’s Crazy!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 800-dominoes
Părfect 😂❤
LOL
Han Han
thats crazy!!
LOL, Any coil, no cap, just coil! just gets cooler! Congrats on 400K Sorin! Thank you!

The free space is for extra/different heatsink They use the same casing for every cpu/gpu variant...

Sadly this is true. :(
Yeah luckily most things can be done on older laptops that are given away on Facebook. In Oz I struggled to sell a 16gb 256sd apple mac.laptop for 70 pounds. And even then customer haggled. No demand for laptops has driven prices way down.

My HP Compaq nx6325 is still going strong in 2024... 😎😁✌
My hp probook 4540s is still the king since 13 years
Coil has gone on its holidays 🤣🤣
10:49 best moment every vid Sorin. ☺☺
Nice one, Sorin!!
Next time, I expect to see a wire rolled up like a coil. Nothing would say "dodgy" more than that!! 🤣
They could get Sorin arrested for that 😂
Hello!
I'm from Brazil.
You are a master indeed!

I love your videos. Greetings.
If anyone asked you "who is the best teacher" mention SORIN
this COIL video it is unique on youtubube !!! i never seen enywhere . thank you again . very interesting .
the large majority of people on youtube teaching how to fix laptop , tells that you have to check for faulty capacitors and mosfets
Had a coil half on once. Customer said not taking power. Pushed down and working ha, looked like solder cracked/wasn’t ever soldered properly. Easy pizza.
Well explained I enjoy your videos
good catch !!!!
Thanks Sorin nice job
Thank you for video
No coil no problem for sorin. But most importantly We have Picture. =)
Sorin!
Thank you

Thinkpads used to be very solid mchines. It iseems the new generations are not like that.
I had similar case with 43" Sony TV. It stopped working, and i found a loose coil. I soled it back, and after 2h of work it fell off again. I replace it with different one and it works fine now. No idea why the old one fell.
definitely this laptop bumped hard while it was in hard case bag.
The heatsink is small probably because they use the same cooling in the smaller version. This is 16 inch with full keyboard. An airduct is an easy solution.

He is like 48 I think
that is crazy Sorin where did the coil go then ? some one take it off what you do about the water damage ? do you do anything about that ok you think that is what happen then somebody opened it !!!
12:57 Thats dust collection area ™
I guess that coil wound up in strange places… Also am I the only one now wondering when Sorin ends up building a whole calibrated power supply from calibrated wire?😉
Unbelievable 😅 how did you spot it so easily.
Companies are not focused on making good laptops Sorin, they focus on make good profit and planned obsolescence so you go and buy another one soon.
I want to have a T-shirt saying We have picture!
or Today, we have a nice laptop.
coils are barely discussed about when it comes to laptop repair , everybody rush to find shorted caps and dead mosfet
13:51 True
Lenovo: But we only want it to survive as long it is on warranty 😝
Perfect 🎉
I need help! Sorin for my OCD can you solder the coil straight 😄😄😄
Bigger heatsink? Probably add an extra £10 to the cost of the machine. Nothing. You can buy full desktop 9cmx6cm heatsinks with fans for under £15. Any metal is better than no metal.
Looks like that coil wasn't soldered to the board well. It probably fell out when the previous repair attempt was made and they didn't notice.
Very Nice! 😎
Where can i find your biginners electronics course lessons?
That coil went to the 9th dimension. Oh wait, wrong UA-cam channel.
I had a Lenova and it was a piece of Junk. Sent it back to the factory and it was still junk when they returned it. I had many computers and laptops and that was the worst.
every cent shaved on production costs will make a dollar without changing end users' price.
My guess is that an alien took that coil to experiment with it.
Ah, liquid damage mentioned. Guess that's why such a new laptop is being repaired by Sorin, instead of getting the motherboard replaced by Lenovo. Would still have the whole warranty remaining according to Lenovo's warranty check, but of course not with liquid damage.
Easy pizza? :))
6:20 it can desolder itself if enough stress given
That's crazy!
O pița casei meritată!
That spaces is problem for fan sound buffer
Do you repair pc motherboards???
A broken Thinkpad ? This is a Ai video ! Thinkpads never die ❤😂
Kind of makes one wonder if the owner removed it!
Lenovo magical nonsolder glue has hit thinkpads now?
They cut corners whenever and wherever they can.Prices ofc stay the same or go up...Nowdays the only well made laptops are the high end gaming ones, and the dell latitudes
Was that a brand new coil? Looked like. 😁
If it isn't floating around in there I'd suggest someone's taken it off - surely if it was physical it would rip the pads and there's plenty of solder on the pads. Sometimes customers aren't truthful I guess - especially if they think it will jeopardise you taking on the job in the first place.
No it was dropped or probably ripped while removing the back cover as sorin said, nobody worked on the laptop since there isnt any obvious faults
A coils a pretty big component with a fairly large surface area soldered to the board - it's not a tiny filter cap. If it was soldered properly I'd expect the pads or the solder to show some signs if it was physically removed and still leaves the question of where is it? I wonder why they don't make the meter screen flip when plugged the opposite way. 🤔
You can manually flip it with a button. I guess an angle sensor might behave a bit erratically.
Yes you can move the screen in four different sides and show different stats too. Just the press of a button on the side of the unit.
i notice on x1 carbon laptops i get from my customers the usb charging ports are push in wow , is all i can lenovo has poor parts installed this day 's lol
The question is, where is the coil now did they not see it ? 😂
The customer used the coil for pizza topping. Easy pizza.
concept of temporary components with lenovo :-) at least cpu is present ))
how the heck big coil got missing
👌👌👍👍
Brand new laptop, why lenovo refused to fix it?
coil kidnapped
Easy 🍕 🍕 😂
dismount motherboard? bruh its very hard work! soldering components on a turned-on motherboard? no problem! sorin u r so lucky...
Laptop doesn't go to sleep?
Another IKEA laptop that you have to build yourself before working!
Do you ever get a laptop to repair that is not nice?
Free Pizza!
Told you, pizza today.
Wie kann man Widerstand messen, obwohl die Batterie angeschlossen ist? Das ist doch total falsch. Unter Umständen wird man falsche Werte bekommen.
Someone opened the laptop with the wrong tools or wrong technique. Poked in to far and knocked off the coil. Maybe for a upgrade that didn't get done.
PD controller sounds like P. Diddy. Controller 😂😅😊
God $
I will say the issue 😊
This is third world countries common issue. But unexpected in the first world 😊
Customer early went the shop. That technician got the issue . He told high price to solve the problem ...
But customer said no need to repair give it back...
Then the technician removed the coil and give it back....
😅😂😂😂
Problem is simple but the solution is hard 😅😅
Hello🤝👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👋👋👋
no cze mordo ;d
What you talk about bigger heatsinks? You dont want to repair stuff? :D
Really strange
We have picture 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩 indonesia
we have pizza!
Common fault with cheap lenovo
Easy pizza!
🍕
"nice motherboard" 😅
easy pizza
