- I got this from a "Sesame Street Special" that aired during PBS pledge drives.
Watch and enjoy as Ernie gets some help from Hoots the owl and his band (with assists from some famous names from that era) on whether he should hold onto his beloved Rubber Duckie while playing his saxophone.
Copyright 1987 Sesame Workshop.
I'm 20 and I loved this when I was younger. The Muppets have always been cool to me. And the celebrities they have sung with have been awesome. I loved the African choir that sang they were awesome.
One of my all-time favorites! Thanks for sharing!
oh yeah!!! good times! i'm a Sesame Street graduate and seeing clips like this from the old days just makes my day!
I love this song, one of my favs for Sesame Street, I loved this song growing up!!
I first saw this on a "Great Performances" episode honoring Jim Henson, and I had it stuck in my head for DAYS. :)
I remember this one even though it is one of those sketches on Sesame Street that most people forgot later on in life. It is really catchy and got me interested in all kinds of music in some odd but interesting way. I remeber because it is when a short lived character named Hoots the Owl was on for only a few seasons. He is gone and long forgotten but hopefully sombody out there in You Tube Land remebers him and his very few contributions he made to Sesame Street.
aaaaaaaahh.........the memories, luv sesame st sense of humor, no kid show can ever top it. jim henson ur a genuis!
This has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. Thanks for the post.
Brings back memories, I love that song.
Yeah, Jeremy Irons singing and dancing... Now that is a sight to see!
I lost the VHS..i loved this one!!!
Pee-wee Herman sent me here! God this brings back memories!
ooooooold Schoool ;D loved watchin this show growin up.
this is indeed a classic. Thanks for the upload!!
Absolutely fantastic!
One of my favorite videos of all time. And I'm 58!
I saw another version of this song about 5 years ago with different celebs including Little Richard & Phil Donahue.
I love the "Pop-Up Video" style that was used on this classic clip.
In Case Anyone Forgot.....(clears throat).....Sesame Street Is Brought To You This Evening By The Letter E (for lifetime achievement Emmy) and the number 40, Happy 40 Years Sesame Street, and Many More To Come.
Nice. First heard the version on the album of the same name. Cool how Hoots has a Louie Armstrong voice.
omg, memories rofl. Peewee and the chair, I loved that chair when i was a kid!
Madeline Kahn. I remember her too. She was on a show on CBS called Cosby. She died in 1999 during their 3rd season. I remember they talked about how great she was in the first episode following her death. She was very funny and very talented. I miss her.
man I watched this when I was a kid and I'd just wait to pee wee came up and I got all excited. I had no clue who everyone else was
I loved this as a kid!
Haven't seen this since I was about 7 years old. I used to have this on tape an I would watch over and over again. The only person I knew was Pee-Wee Herman.
Long live Pee-Wee Herman.
I also do remember the LadySmith Black Mazambo because it was the most "out there".
Wow, all these big name stars sure do love Sesame Street.
This musical sketch introduced me to many experts of their chosen field, especially those who weren't as mainstream. I became familiar with great artists I would have never known (Celia Cruz, Itzhak Perlman, Pete Seeger, ). I don't know if this was CTW's plan, but they did a good job of exposing children to notable people (as well as regular celebrities).
"The guy with the deep voice" is Joe Williams ! :)
Check out any of his work, esp. with the Basie band, and the session "Nothin' But the Blues" (1983)
I love this! It's so hilarious to see those tough football players singing about a rubber duckie!!
wow that's awesome... I used to love this clip, and it looks like your video is about the same quality as ours was
Holy cow. . . Jeremy Irons as a child.
yes i love this vid DEFINITELY A THROWBACK
Squee I remember this I always liked the songs where celebrities appeared
The greatest song. ever.
Straight up classic.
Ladysmith Mambazo have got to be among the coolest guys on the face of the earth to have been involved with Sesame Street the way they were, in this and a few other productions. :)
yup sure is spanish this was my favorite just because she appeared calia cruz! a very big artist!
i have this on video cassette
I didn't learn until much later that this is the second version of Put Down the Duckie with celebritiy verses added in. Originally it was just Ernie and Hoots.
I use to love the sketch that came right after this were Kermit was asking Oscar what he liked about Public Television leading into the local station pledge drive.
In Case Anyone Forgot.....(Clears Throat)....Sesame Street Is Brought To You Today By The Letter E (for lifetime achievemeant emmy) and the number 40. Happy 40 Years Sesame Street and Many More To Come.
most memorable skit of all time
Still listening to this at 18.
I remember this put down the duckie
Wyntom Marsalles, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Paul Simon. Top fucking Notch. (Guess this was filmed at the same time Graceland was being made. )
this is available on the retro collection of sesame st dvds btw. we bought it for our kid (and ourselves of course) :) Great vid. Has James Taylors Jellyman Kelly etc on there too.
davidvanwell: Hoots and most of Kevin Clash's other characters were removed once Elmo rose to superstardom and Kevin himself was promoted to directing much of the show.
I love the bits with Paul Simon and Ladysmith Blcak Mambazo - must have been around the time of Graceland
this song was the reason i started playing saxophone
Best Sesame Street Ever!
Sesame street consistently gets the most amazing people to cameo on the show. I don't know how they pull it off.
put down the duckie !!!!!!! lol, omg i remember this song, shit these are the classics, u don't see sesame street featuring stuff like this anymmore, im 18 now but shit, i could watch this all day and not get tired of it, it's a hell of a lot better then that elmo's world shit daz airing
My fav song, there are so many video versions.
OMG I remember this!
Ernie's pretty good for a beginner...
Ahh. Hoots the Owl. You don't see much of him anymore. He was a good character.
I love Ernie! lol
They all did it willingly. Every musical guest that went on the show, recorded a verse. Even some that didn't recorded one.
Oh god, this made me smile. I love Paul Simon and Pee-Wee. XDDD
Wear did you find this video? its so cool Jeremy Irons is in it. I LOVE him
Woah! That's a lot of celebrities for just this one song. I realize sesame street is awsome, but how did they slate all those guys to do those cameos. That's really cool!
Every time my ADD gets really bad, I tell myself to "put down the ducky" so I "put down" whatever is distracting me from what.... i'm..... shiny.....
BuddyBoy: Actually, Paul Ruebens was arrested. Pee-Wee Herman is just his character alias (from "Pee-Wee's Playhouse", which--ironically enough, considering the reasons for his arrest--was originally meant to be an adult show before being toned down into a kid's program...hence why it wound up on [adult swim] a few recent years ago).
This episode aired when I was 7 and in my full "PBS before dinner" swing. They don't make edutainment like this anymore (not even on Sesame Street).
Hellz yeah... old school baby.
Why is Jeremy Irons there? That's so random.
oh i remember, that dude at 2:04 in the blue chair used to freak me out, lol. i was freaked out by some really odd things as a kid
@loosenupx3 you're not the only one sweetie because I love it as well.
Yeah, Pee-wee was removed from the song after the... incident. But I'm glad he's retained. That version is the only version I remember. Superb.
real good
@RolloSmokes Hell, they had a lineup that was six years long for The Muppet Show.
"I sing like an actor and dance like a duck." -Jeremy Irons
@brcbrtn and he was Simon in "Die Hard With A Vengeance"
Hoots was THE MAN
joe williams was great on "Birdland Jump"!
i saw him sing Birdland jump a yr b4 he died!
was he great on that song everyone?!
I don't think anyone is going to post the other version where Pee-Wee Herman, The New York Mets, The New York Giants, and Pete Seeger is replaced by Robert MacNeil, Phil Donahue, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Barbara Walters.
Ahhh, wave of nostalgia. This was my favorite song of alllll time when I was a little kid. I love when ernie throws the duck and starts wailin' on that sax, haha
this was also on "sing yourself silly"
I wonder if all the famous actors and musicians appeared for free..I imagine some of them would stand in line to be part of Sesame St.
2:03, 4:30 R.I.P. Paul Reubens
Big Bird gave them all an offer they couldn't refuse, I guess. Remember, this was before Elmo became the BMOC (big Muppet on campus).
I remember this! This has run through my head a few times randomly over the years.
Craig Bartlett--who animated & produced for the Hensons to this day, wrote for Rugrats, created Hey Arnold (the football head debuted in clay form on Sesame Street in 1987), & is wed to Lisa Groening (think a real-life Millhouse & Lisa Simpson)--also did the Peny shorts for Pee-Wee's Playhouse. This, in turn, explains the cameo here by Ruebens as his manchild alter-ego, just like his family relationship with the Groening's is why The Simpsons were in the celeb version of "Monster in the Mirror".
bs'd
THIS IS THE VERSION WITH PEE WEE HERMAN et al :) Very few things get me to shut off Mark Levin, but when my 1 and 1/2 year old granddaughter says Duckie Song, I melt and put this and Cookie Starts withe C on straight away :)
Ya' Gotta put down the duckie, dude!
YES! It's John Candy aka GOD.
Nice to see Jane Curtin too
What part of Kansas are you from?
For anyone mean keep your opinan to yourself because some people like it! By the way it was excellent I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
is that john candy at 1:26...im almost certain it is....love that guy...well should say loved :(
Yes, Pee-Wee Herman was arrested in 1991. And CTW had to remove his appearence. And replace it with Phil Donahue and Gladys Knight and the Pips.
Don't forget Andrea Martin in leopard print! By the way, does anyone remember the name of the ensemble group from 02:09 - 02:30??
That was the late great, and I mean that, Joe Williams!!!
Yay! This and the Manah Manah song are my favorites!! Woohoo! (No. I'm not a 6-year-old...... I just like the songs..... GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?!)
I was just looking My X today
Who was that african american in the blue shirt on 1:58?
jw, b/c i seen him in some episodes
You're quite welcome.
Who wasz that african singin group, i want to know there name?
LAWL! I heard this at 6 flags today!
The trumpter is Wynton Marsalis.
Wow! Why dpesn't Wikipedia mention this?!
The message is quite simple: Put down the duckie & worship the Devil or be beaten mercilessly.
But you have to listen to it backwards to hear it.
Now you know how opposing players felt when Carl Banks (No. 58) zoned in on them...
By the god of all that's small, furry, and yellow. Paul Simon? Who is the genius in PR who pitched this to everyone? "Naw, you'll love it, it's called "Put Down the Duckie..."
Madeline Kahn is so funny. She, Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman did so many Funny movies in their time. Look them up.
