Kia ora...I thought i would hop on here, just to be nosey, and saw a few people asking a few questions about the song 'Rua kenana'. The song was written by my younger brother Dave, who some may remember, was the lead singer a pioneer maori reggae band called 'Dread Beat & Blood'...The band Survival is made up of 3 brothers and a whole bunch of talented cuzzies....Dave (Vocals/Guitar), Herb (Vocals/Drums), and John (Bones) Grace (Vocals/Guitar)...All the cuzzies are Nathan Warren (Bass), Nathan Rei (Keyboards), Simon Grace (Vocals/Guitar), Johnny Tipuna (Vocals).....Dave wrote many songs in Survival, about many injustices not just at home but around the world, from the American Indian at wounded knee to the injustices of the israelis on palestinians....After the disbanding, myself and Dave form a new group that continues today called 'Dave Grace & Injustice'...You'll probably be able to hear a lot of the older songs from all the bands dave played with, if you go see Dave and the band....Peace ppl
Wow thank you for the history on the song!!! I love the song for many reasons, but my main reason is its just a good song with a message behind the words!!! I can feel the passion within every beat yesss i love it!!!! 😇🤗😍💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
It’s amazing how many indigenous peoples around the world resonate with this song and film. Kia kaha, stand strong. Keep fighting and protecting the rights our ancestors died for, and teaching our children our actual history. We’ve come this far, we will not let our government change anything! ✊🏽🫶🏽🙏🏾❤
i played this song for my brothers on the shennecock indian reservation in long island new york and they listened..they said if all indigenous people would have sided with each other instead of the yangheez( english) then the kings subjects would have tucked their redcoat tails up their asses and pissed off back to england..let them fight their own war then the brown brothers would have eradicated the winners...this song is universal to all indigeneous people.

The Tohunga Suppression Act 1907 was an Act of the New Zealand Parliament aimed at replacing tohunga (herbal doctor)as traditional Māori healers with western medicine. It was was repealed in 1962. Phuq dat. Use of native plant life is a topic of major concern for Aotearoa New Zealand, a nation of significant biodiversity and environmental culture. While certain native plants have been used or commercialized in western medicine, much of the medicinal use of native New Zealand plants has historically and continues to be practiced by Maori in the form of rongoa Maori, traditional Maori healing. Rongoa Maori is a complex, holistic approach to healing. There is a focus on physical, mental, and spiritual components to health. Western medicine often ignores spiritual and, to a certain extent, mental intricacies of health that can be vital to certain groups of people. Finding a working ground between western and indigenous knowledge bases regarding human health is vital to create culturally and financially accessible healthcare for all citizens in Aotearoa. In addition, cooperation of the two sectors has potential to deepen the general understanding of human health. Indigenous knowledge and western science regarding medicinal plant use can be used collaboratively to create a more holistic knowledge base and capacity for healing when allowed to occupy the same spaces.
