You might not see Kitana online too often, but don't let that deceive you, she's a very solid character in MK1, and very much worth learning. To help you do that, we have some very in-depth pointers from Faysal, who has been gathering info about the character even well before release.

Kitana mains, report in! How you are doing in this game so far, and what made you pick her up?
I’m still looking for the right cameo i’m cycling between the Cryrax, Scorpion, Jax, Sonya, And Goro Cameo. I also heard Motaro was good for Kitana. I love that Kitana has versatile moves and specials, she also has really good air combat. I wish kitana had A overheard or at least better frames on her Back 3, She has A good down 1 as well. with the right cameos like Cyrax or Jax, you can have great set ups with Kitana’s Wind bomb. Hopefully with future updates she may get A buff because I think people still consider her kinda Mid but i’m not sure cuz Dragon plays A good Kitana

I just thought she looked awesome love the fan effects. People underestimate the chip damage you can get from zoning especially with sub zero kameo. That's what I do it's pretty good 😅
@@earlstevens4099 if you use jax she gets crazy setups with the windbomb in the corner, sub can do it with her to but it’s way less damage
nobody really mentioned this, (or maybe i just didn't watch the video carefully enough). In order to hit the second j1, u gonna have to hit the first one at the exact moment ur character start dropping

U can get a full combo after 112 if u use Sonya kameo, u dash up after she hits and then back 24 into imagination. Phenomenal guide keep up the fantastic work

Ok, about to nerd out a bit in this comment. I really tried to assess what her strengths and weaknesses are, what sets the top 5 characters apart from everyone else, and how to cover some of those weaknesses and amplify those strengths by addressing the root cause of the problems, rather than just treat symptoms. I based my thoughts on what seems to be a deliberate choice by the combat design team for Kitana, and for all the characters (i.e. everyone has an armored move, and every armored move should work). I think she could use 2 changes:
1. Square Wave close-up block frame buff: on block, it should speed up from -17 to -15. Square Wave has a pushback on block that almost resets neutral even in the corner, and is a great go-to for a lot of matchups to end the 2,4 / 2,4,1,2 fakeout. That 2 frame difference makes Kitana slightly more aggressive, especially against characters like Raiden, Ashrah, and Kenshi, who can close that gap while Kitana is still recovering (I chose a 2 frame reduction instead of 1 because of input buffer).
2. This is the big one: Princess Pirouette. My first instinct was "the second hit could be an overhead" but that's a bandaid, and the devs clearly want to keep that sort of tool out of Kitana's kit. Instead, I think the gap between the first and second hit should be 32 frames instead of 23 (compare: the gap between the second and third hit of her 2,4,1,2 string is 34 frames), but the first hit should special cancel into air specials. The increased gap gives Kitana more air time to actually input a special move, and allows a similar fakeout as the 2,4,1,2 string. Now if we're getting nasty, the second hit could also have a little pushback on block.
If Kitana's place is in staying out of throw range of most of the roster, then I think these changes^ would give her some breathing room to actually get there. The idea behind these changes wasn't to actually alter how Kitana plays, or add tools, but to make it easier to reach for those tools, as I actually believe her best strengths is how she can jail with ending strings with projectile cancels (especially metered fan toss and fancy flick, they can even make you armor safe in a lot of situations).
It would be fascinating to see how these changes might affect Kitana's matchups and her standing in the roster. Keep nerding out - it's through such detailed dissections that the finest aspects of game design are often refined.
What made me main Kitana right away is how so cool her combos look, and how many they are (including the "far away combos") . Also, her back 2 is so important and it gives her a very high chance to open opponents.
They nailed it with Kitana this time (unlike MK 11 in my view).
How can she not be interesting?!

I've been a huge Kitana fan since MK2. I used her in MK9 up to 11. I was abit intimated with her in this game at first but after much practice she's one of my mains. I do have issues with matchups like Cage and Baraka cause of the bully pressure. Otherwise ima stick with her
I find it too difficult to square up with a Johnny, so I mainly take any zoning advantage I can get to build up a life deficit, and try to Whig punish as much as possible. A lot of Johnny, even good one love to try and steal turns, and you can catch them with a back 2.
Baraka is an impossible matchup frankly. He has better range, and better frames, along with just as good whiff punishes. Your usuals Kitana game plan just doesn’t work against him. He can also blow up your armor. Zoning is off the table cause Baraka can full screen punish you with a slide if you to the mid projectile. I do use a Sonya kameo so maybe a different kameo will make the matchup more favorable.
With cage what I do is:
- take cyrax
- interrupt his huge blockstrings with a mb df2 into cyrax spin. If he blocks it you are just safe and at mid distance, if he gets it you can do a jump 112 for a total of 23% on wakeup, which is great.
-zone him out
-and most importantly, he has no tools of getting in besides that mb dash kick which is insanely neg on block, punish it with a full combo, with cyrax you can even try a restand. After that keep him guessing and keep him mid distance.
If that doesn't work, try and see if he trips up the matchup, Kitana is quite rare so ppl dont really know how to counter her.
- they always forget you can fan toss in the air, so jump and wait a little and then fan toss, usually works for the first hit of the match
- take jax and just summon the ground pound, they will be STRESSING and you can get j3 air fanlift combos
-B4, B4, B4
and with baraka just let him think he has a chance at zoning you and then just mb db3 violently to full combos

This season I'm learning kitana.. imma pick up a character each season 😊
After maining meleena, scorpion, and sub I can say that her combos start up so slow I just can’t compete against a Johnny or li may who can put pressure constantly if they get me in a spot with no space and I find a lot of her moves being super punishable. Just compared to Meleena I have a way better move set and higher damage. I mean if Kitana did some more damage I think it would make up for her lack of mixups. She is such a fun character but compared to other characters she doesn’t compete and if you play against a really good Johnny or top characters, or characters that can outzone her your going to have a really hard time.
U just gotta used the kitana flow chart. Standing 2 on block backdash into b2. 11 on block back dash into b2. You would be surprised on how often thats works cuz people dont like to wait and start mashing.
I play many different characters and kitana is best with the most creativity and mix ups, she never gets boring. There is just so much variety with her its insane and i feel like she could be top 5 if played right. The fan throws are no joke and will catch your opponent off guard if done randomly.

I dont ise the wind bomb because it always just gets blocked. I like scorpion because she can get 34% off of get up attack with acorpion. I am also thinking she may have a long combo while in air with j11df2 scorpion* db3EX j112

I don’t understand man. I hate kitana on this game, and I hate myself because she’s my favorite character, but I hate how they built her, like wtf, her mids are terrible, almost all punishable, and literally not a SINGLE overhead….. dude. It breaks my heart, and back2 NEVER lands for me, and even if it does I never B24 because it’ll just get block, and you guess it! It’s NOT SAFE. I hate it so much, I hate her so much, I hate this game. I hate neutral play.
But I just need to get good. I know it… I just hate that I have to change my entire mentality and play style to use my favorite character. People probably don’t agree with me, but I think she needs a major buff. Honestly she needs a 50/50, she just gets punished too easily,
